Co-promoted with The Freebutt, FatCat's third 'Furballs' event takes place at The Freebutt in Brighton on Friday February 12th with an adventurous line-up co-headlined by Astral Social Club and Alexander Tucker, with able support from up-and-coming Brighton trio Cold Pumas. Additionally, there will be screenings of many of Semiconductor's incredible, cutting-edge animated films of shifting landscapes and systems in chaos; the venue will again be redecorated by the FatCat scrap-art crew (including using thousands of feet of cassette and VHS tape); there will be film projections and FatCat DJs; and once again the first 50 people through the door will receive a free CDR, featuring tracks from all of the evening's acts. Where else would you get such value for money?

Astral Social Club is the project of Yorkshire-based Neil Campbell, a prolific and pivotal figure on the UK post-punk underground and founder member of the highly influential drone/psych rock outfit, Vibracathedral Orchestra. Having recently featured on one side of a FatCat Split Series 12", ASC is currently one of the UK's few genuinely pioneering artists, his output a dazzling coming-together of blissful drone ambience, pounding warehouse beats, and tripped-out free-improv noise.
"Imagine Kool Herc with a raft of electronics, percussion, some guitars and a laptop. It's chaos and atoms smashing, more about the jarring mood change and full-body immersion than stitched together beats... There's no theme to tie one end of a piece to another, no rhythmic grid to rest on, no climax because it is all climax; only an enormous, shimmering expanse of pitches, textures and pulses stretches out before you... one of the most significant 'mutant techno' outposts of the past three or four years..." (Dusted)

Having released three albums on the ATP label, Alexander Tucker's darkly atmospheric music is a unique meshing of compositional song structures, drones, stacked-up vocals and improvisations. Using cello, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and a bank of pedals, he creates looped and layered soundscapes which twist and bend through the old-fashioned disciplines of fingerpicked acoustic folk, to the experimentalism and dissonance of electronica and fuzzy-psych / metal drone.
"Tucker piles inland shanties atop field recordings, piano, jittery bows, noise squalls, and bone creaks. Throughout, his fingerpicking feels almost possessed." (Village Voice)
"Haunted by John Fahey's mystical guitar style, Tucker reinterprets and paints over any old influence with a dense and doomy mix of detuned guitars, looped drones and warped harmonies. It's the equivalent of dubstep for folk traditionalists." (Time Out)

Definitely a name to watch, Cold Pumas are a Brighton trio who have to date issued just one self-released 12" and a 7" shared with new Sub Pop-signings, Male Bonding. An energetic and intensely insistent live act, their treble-heavy, locked-groove-punk recalls the likes of Liars, Health, Women, ESG and Abe Vigoda.
"Cold Pumas write hymns of pounding repetition that lock into a groove, running rings around themselves... What more needs to be said? They're fucking tight." (Vice magazine)

Furballs is a bi-monthly event, curated by FatCat staff, which we aim to build into an exciting and changing series of events. Drawing on acts from both the FatCat roster and from other bands and other artists we are excited by, we aim to build Furballs into an exciting and changing series of events that are the locus for a chance to do something different rather than just any other gig. Based roughly upon the great success of our annual Open Circuit events in Hasselt, Belgium, we hope to also involve film-makers, visual artists and other creative types, to encourage the audience to get involved and to try to shake things up a little bit. If anyone out there wants to make suggestions / get involved, then please feel to get in touch at furballs[at]fat-cat.co.uk.
