Bonnie 'Prince' Billy at Jewel Cave, Margaret River on 25 Feb 2012

Location: Jewel Cave

Its no ordinary venue though, in keeping with the rest of the tour and the select venues chosen (Perth Festival Gardens, Sydney Opera House, The Spiegeltent, Eumundi et al), Bonnie Prince Billy has chosen Jewel Cave for his maiden South Western Australian appearance. With a capacity of just 40 persons and a completely acoustic show this is sure to be an opportunity anyone in the region would not want to miss. Tickets are on-sale Monday 30th January. Full details below.
Born Will Oldham in Kentucky USA some 40 years ago, Oldham christened the Bonnie mantle after the dissolution of his previous outfit(s), the hugely influential alt-country outfits Palace Brothers and Palace Music. Since then Bonnie 'Prince' Billy has amassed a catalogue of some twelve studio-albums, all weirdly inventive takes on the roots genre: country-western, bluegrass, Appalachian folk, and which has seen cover versions from the likes of Johnny Cash, Cat Power and Mark Lanegan while the list of renowned public admirers would fill a press release on its own.
Live one can never know what to expect from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy other than to hugely entertained.
Oldham is made for this kind of gig, looking as he does like a pastor from the American South; he waves his arms theatrically as he delivers his lyrics, at times bending double as if the emotional weight of the song is a heavy cross to bear. - The Fly.Co.UK
Safe to say those of us who have followed Oldham as he has toured shyly and quietly in support of his seven earlier BPB releases have never seen anything like the Oldham who was energetically bounding around the stage on Sunday like a little yoga Buddha-slash-monkeyman in blue leotard and bare feet. - heyreverb.com
Call it country, call it folk, call it what you Will... it's safe to say that there is nothing out there quite like Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.
Tickets for the Jewel Cave show will go on-sale Monday January 30th.

Caves Road (38km from Margaret River and 12km from Augusta). Venue Access is through the main building then down stairs (flat shoes are recommended).
7:30PM -10PM. For a detailed map see www.margaretriver.com

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy feat. The Cairo Gang on 5 Mar 2012

Location: Opera House

'Joyful, barefoot Americana at some unfixed intersection between folk and rock.' Pitchfork

One of America’s most beloved singer-songwriters, Will Oldham AKA Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy will come to Australia in 2012

This Australian tour – his first in six years - follows the release of his 16th studio album, 2011’s critically acclaimed, Wolfroy Goes To Town.

An enigmatic genius of many other musical guises (Palace Music, Palace Brothers) Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s gorgeous porch-strummin' ramshackle sound blends Americana, folk, roots, country and indie rock with literary lyrics that consistently endear audiences and critics alike. Selling-out concert tours worldwide (with Australia as no exception), his reflective, achingly melodic songs, resonate with a rare beauty and literary vision that is truly timeless.

For this very special Concert Hall performance, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is joined by the Cairo Gang (aka guitarist, Emmett Kelly) along with singer, Angel Olsen and drummer, Van Campbell, to perform songs that span his prolific 17 year career; a career that has not only inspired and shaped a generation of neo-folk artists like Iron and Wine's Sam Beam and M. Ward, but also seen his songs covered by likes of Johnny Cash (‘I See A Darkness’) , Bjork, PJ Harvey, and grunge pioneer Mark Lanegan.

Complimented by many multi-band member sing-a-longs, this beautiful and intimate concert experience is sure to leave the audience feeling, as the LA Weekly recently noted, ‘as if listening to a heavenly orchestra trying to sweep you off your feet’.

Trembling Bells with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy on 26 Apr 2012

Location: Picturedrome

Presenting the Trembling Bells playing, singing and duelling with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy performing a new collection of songs written by the Trembling Bells some of which appear on the forthcoming collaborative album 'The Marble Downs' on Honest Jon's. This will be the first time these songs are going to be performed live.

Trembling Bells lead vocalist Lavinia Blackwall will sing in duet with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Alex Neilson, the chief songwriter for the Trembling Bells, plays drums, while Simon Shaw on bass and Mike Hastings on guitar make up the pack. Originals, covers and traditionals will be featured in the sets.

With a limited Christmas 7” single already under their belts, Trembling Bells and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy kick off 2012 with a collaborative album of male/female vocal duets.

Alex Neilson has synthesized his love of seat-of-your-pants improv and raw folk into his songwriting with the Bells. While Bonnie has long since shed the Appalachian dirt of his earlier records to enter a fertile period of grace. Now these paths converge on ´The Marble Downs´.

Bonnie has a habit of seeking out commanding female voices and he doubtlessly viewed the pairing with Lavinia Blackwall as a gift. His Southern gent tones provide an intriguing contrast to her archetypal English Folk siren vocals. But the chemistry between them goes beyond the purely musical. Their vocal exchanges remind us that the classic male/female duet is, at its best, a sublimation of love, sex and treachery acted out in flirtatious, freewheeling duels. The songs are mostly Bells’ originals, with two inspired covers and a traditional.

Trembling Bells with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy on 2 May 2012

Location: The Acorn

http://theacornpenzance.com/

Performance 8pm. Bar from 7pm.

This is a standing event (but there is seating in the balcony).

Trembling Bells are Alex Neilson’s song-based group who seek to reanimate the psychic landscapes of Great Britain and relocate them to some vague, mythic land where basic human crises are encountered and conquered.

The band released their second album for Honest Jon’s in March 2010 called Abandoned Love. This is their most effective synthesis of Earlie Musik modes, Country music’s bathetic romanticism, British Folk’s edenic mystery and the priapic bombast of Classic Rock.

A change in core personnel has seen Mike Hastings replace Ben Reynolds on guitar. Mike has previously played with Lavinia Blackwall (vocals, keyboard, guitar) in Glasgow band The Pendulums.

An interesting article on this gig in The Cornishman (Jan 5th, 2012) - ‘The Acorn gets Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’.
