Esplanade Presents: Elbow on 18 Mar 2012

Location: Esplanade Concert Hall

“Their epic, orchestral rock is complex and ambitious but never smugly clever, personally expressive yet not morbidly self-obsessed, sweetly glum rather than oppressively gloomy.”—Uncut

“It also becomes clear that Elbow are still part of the crowd's real world, and not the world of rock worship – a real rarity on a stage of this size.”—The Observer

“Elbow continue down the narrow corridor they've established in recent years-- immaculately recorded and stripping away nearly every bit of ethereal studio magic.”—Pitchfork

Shakespeare may have coined the term for an arm bend, but synonymous to the word Elbow nowadays is a band that has enjoyed a meteoric rise from critic’s choice to household name. And just when 2009 ended spectacularly with sold out headline shows, two very prestigious Ivor Novello awards and not forgetting a Mercury Album of the Year for 2008, Elbow returned with a new critically acclaimed album that defied the rapturous ascent of catchy synth and folk pop fever sweeping across the indie scene.

Purveyors of a progressive sound that often focuses on life’s little intimacies, the motley crew of five has been hailed the “everyman kings” by NME for songs that “hit the heart of the matter with frightening resonance“. And they are not wrong. Frontman Guy Garvey’s voice is sweet yet, soulful and on stage, his lyrical wit and dark humour is refreshing and magnetic.

Their fourth studio album, The Seldom Seen Kid, propelled them out of obscurity and into rock stardom, featuring anthemic hits such as One Day Like This and Grounds for Divorce; the former appearing in soundtracks to the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 Olympics. While a record about romance and bereavements, their latest release, Build A Rocket Boys! recalls the universality of childhood and home where nostalgia operates close to the heart.

From the beautiful naivety and possibilities of youth to the more grounded yet developed drive of the mature adult, the album perpetuates their signature sound of cinematic flourishes and layered arrangements. Elbow continue their streak of brooding magnificence especially on Lippy Kids, Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl and Neat Little Rows.

A surprise at every turn, Elbow’s ambivalence towards trends and expectations is what makes them so popular.

Thu 24th Nov, 2011 in Local News

It has been 20 years since melancholic English gents Elbow first started impressing us with their air wobble, and to mark this occasion the band will return to our shores in March supported by Bombay Bicycle Club in their very first Australian appearance ever.

When last on our shores fro Splendour raved “Elbow are as close to perfect a live band any punter could hope for” and having just release their fifth studio album Build A Rocket Boys! it doesn’t look they are slowing down any time soon.

Bombay Bicycle Club, on the other hand, we have yet to see live so no doubt fans will be pretty darn excited to finally get up close with with the North London indie rockers

Elbow + Bombay Bicycle Club at The Tivoli, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane on 25 Mar 2012

Location: The Tivoli

Elbow are making a much anticipated and welcome return to Australia for some special shows. Fellow Brits and special guests, Bombay Bicycle Club, join Elbow on tour in what will be their first Australian shows.

Elbow's return visit follows quickly after four mesmerising performances last July, including sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney and a remarkable set at the Splendour in the Grass festival.

Elbow have consistently delivered impeccable, brilliant live shows. The band's graceful, lush orchestral sounds - a gently sublime mix of the intricately elegant, poignant, and elative, rousing crescendos - serve up stunning renditions from their five-album repertoire. Up front, Guy Garvey fills the room with his angelic vocals, undeniable stage presence and natural charisma; his generous between-song banter building a strong rapport between band and audience.

2011 Elbow's 20-year anniversary and the release of their fifth studio album, 'Build A Rocket Boys'. 'Build A Rocket Boys' follows debut album 'Asleep in the Back', 'Cast of Thousands', 'Leaders of the Free World' and their fourth album, the 2008 Mercury Music Prize winning 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.

North London's Bombay Bicycle Club, opening for Elbow on all shows, have released three albums in as many years. Winning a competition to perform at V Festival while still at school, the youthful band released their gold, debut album, 'I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose', in 2009. Wasting no time, a stripped-down, acoustic, second album 'Flaws', was released a year later making the UK top 10. 'A Different Kind of Fix' is Bombay Bicycle Club's latest offering, cited as their best record yet and a promise of more to come. The band have built a fiercely loyal UK fan-base to which they're about to add a whole lot more Australians.
