An HD Odyssey on 22 Jun 2013

Location: Philharmonic Hall

John Adams Short Ride in a Fast Machine
R Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra
Holst The Planets

Lawrence Renes conductor
Huddersfield Choral Society
London Philharmonic Orchestra

The visiting London Philharmonic Orchestra presents a spectacular multimedia evening featuring Duncan Copp’s award-winning high definition films The Earth and The Planets. Breathtaking footage from NASA’s exploration of the solar system is projected on a giant screen and accompanied by evocative cosmically-inspired scores including The Planets by Holst and Strauss' epic tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra (the opening to 2001: A Space Odyssey). In this virtual trip into space music and science join forces for an audio-visual bombardment of the senses.

“The images in the movie, produced and directed by Duncan Copp, were often astonishing. Photographs from rovers and satellites, radar images and computer-generated graphics were combined to give the audience the impression of circling individual planets and sometimes flying over their awesomely barren landscapes”
The New York Times

Price: £15

Górecki Symphony No. 4 World Premiere on 12 Apr 2014

Location: Royal Festival Hall

Alexandre Tansman: Stèle in memoriam Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky: Violin Concerto in D
Henryk Górecki: Symphony No.4 (World premiere)

In 1940s Hollywood, the Polish composer Alexandre Tansman met and befriended Igor Stravinsky. It was a close, respectful relationship that Tansman captured in his musical memorial on Stravinsky’s death three decades later -- a touching elegy containing a rhythmic tour-de-force that would surely have made the Russian smile. Stravinsky paid homage to his own musical mentors Bach and Mozart in the poignant games and conflicts of his acrobatic Violin Concerto. Finally, this concert offers a true musical event -- the first performance of a symphony, again from a Polish composer, that the musical world has been anticipating for nearly 40 years: the Fourth from Henryk Górecki, who died in 2010.

Górecki's Symphony No. 4 is commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Southbank Centre London, with generous support from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Zaterdag Matinee Amsterdam.
