Prom 25: Frank Zappa - The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary on 31 Jul 2013

Location: Royal Albert Hall

Trend-mongers, philosophers and hunchmen. A car-chase, a love-in and a replica mahogany desk. A coughing mountain, a choir of stenographers and an exceptional swine-pig called Greggery.

Nicholas Collon and the Aurora Orchestra give the first Proms performance of Frank Zappa's high-energy counter-culture satire The Adventures of Greggery Peccary.

An arrangement of a zany Nancarrow study and the UK premiere of Philip Glass's 10th Symphony complete a far-out late-night happening from one of Britain's most vivacious young orchestras.

La Belle et la Bête on 10 Aug 2013

Location: Playhouse

Minimalist composer Philip Glass’s magical reimagining of Jean Cocteau’s 1946 La Belle et la Bête combines the classic black and white film with live performance in aŠsophisticated work that is at once a touching fairy tale and a meditation on creativity.
Removing the film’s original dialogue track and score by Georges Auric, Glass replaces them with his own scintillating music, played live by the Philip Glass Ensemble, the dialogue sung by vocalists synchonised live with the screen.

The result boldly harnesses movie technology to create a stunning synthesis of opera and film, as Cocteau’s bewitching storytelling is matched by some of Glass’s most evocative music in an unforgettable tale of love triumphing over greed.

The Poet Speaks on 13 Aug 2013

Location: Playhouse

Two of the pillars of contemporary music come together for an intimate evening of poetry, music and song in tribute to their friend, the great Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg.

Punk poet and provocateur Patti Smith performs both her own and Ginsberg’s poetry, with accompaniment and solo pieces for piano from founding father of minimalism Philip Glass.
Renowned as one of the originators of the Beat movement, Ginsberg tirelessly championed the work of his friends Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. His raw, visceral poems, including Howl, Kaddish and Wichita Vortex Sutra, range from forceful fury to profound spirituality.

As a backdrop to the evening’s event, Smith and Glass have curated a collage of images, paintings and photographs, projected live on stage, that reveals the richness of Ginsberg’s achievements.

Philip Glass Ensemble: Retrospektiivi on 21 Aug 2013

Location: Savoy-teatteri

Glassilla on taito juottaa sähköistä vahvistusta tarvitsevat soittimet saumattomasti kiinni klassisen musiikin akustiikkaan. Tunnusomaista on hypnoottinen toisto, jonka juuret löytyvät Intian ja Indonesian perinteistä.

Glassin kuulijaystävällinen kokeellisuus on innoittanut muusikoita monessa polvessa vanhemman kaartin Brian Enosta ja David Bowiesta nuorempiin Beckiin, Sufjan Stevensiin ja Sigur Rósiin. Myös konemusiikki on paljosta velkaa Glassin pulssiminimalismille.

Glass löi itsensä läpi vuonna 1976 radikaalin pelkistetyllä Einstein on the Beach –oopperalla ja kasvatti 1980-luvulla mainettaan amerikkalaisen, ilmavan minimalismin pioneerina. Sittemmin hän on laajentanut ilmaisuasteikkoaan lukuisiin eri suuntiin. Viime vuonna 75-vuotisjuhlaansa viettänyt taiteilija löytää tietoisen niukkojen aineksien takaa kokonaisen maailmankaikkeuden.

Philip Glass Ensemblen konsertti kertaa pitkän uran merkkipaaluja.
