After a month of tears and mayhem, I didn't want to write another journal full of sadness, I wanted to take a time out. However, today is the day of Michael Jackson's memorial. It will be an unprecedented global event, due to begin in about 90 minutes, as I write.

I have thought of little else all day, as I imagine has everyone else. Music doesn't sound right. I still need a time out yet I also need to mark the day somehow. The only track that comes close to being appropriate is this, the second movement from Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony.

Until 1992, Górecki was viewed as a remote and fiery figure known only to a few connoisseurs, primarily as one of a number of composers responsible for sparking a postwar renaissance in Polish music. In 1992, 15 years after it was composed, a recording of his Third Symphony, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs—recorded with soprano Dawn Upshaw and released to commemorate the memory of Poles lost during the Holocaust—became a worldwide commercial and critical success, selling more than a million copies and vastly exceeding the typical lifetime sales of a recording of symphonic music by a 20th-century composer. As surprised as anyone at its popularity, Górecki said, "Perhaps people find something they need in this piece of music […] somehow I hit the right note, something they were missing. Something somewhere had been lost to them. I feel that I instinctively knew what they needed." This popular success did not generate wide interest in Górecki's other works, and he has since pointedly resisted the temptation to repeat earlier success, or compose for commercial reward. Source
Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Polish: Symfonia pieśni żałosnych), is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style.

A solo soprano sings a different Polish text in each of the three movements. The first is a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, mother of Jesus, the second a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and the third a Silesian folk song of mother searching for son killed in the Silesian uprisings.[1] The first and third movements are written from the perspective of a parent who has lost a child, and the second movement from that of a child separated from a parent. The dominant themes of the symphony are motherhood and separation through war. Source

Henryk Górecki

I remember when this album suddenly became a hit in the early 1990s. It was everywhere, on every radio, from cafés and boutiques to corner shops where you grabbed your milk. It even made the charts, peaking at number 6 in the UK album charts and appearing on Top of The Pops. It was a surprise because there is so much sadness in the music, but overriding that is the incredible beauty.

For me, it works on many levels. The emotion tugs at my heart whilst the ideas and themes, the melodies and gorgeous voice of Dawn Upshaw are meditative and contemplative, inspiring my mind to wander or just be still.

Whilst I wait for the Michael Jackson's memorial to begin, it's the stillness that I crave.

On another level, I feel guilty for taking this time out to recharge my batteries and regroup whilst our friends overseas, especially in Iran, are deprived of the luxury. But I am no good to anyone if I am exhausted, and just because I'm tired, it doesn't mean I'm tired of being supportive.

Today is an unusual day. Today, the entire world will unite and remember one man. And thanks to social media, we will be able to communicate with each other in real-time as we attend his memorial together. We have had many historic days this decade but I think today's is the most incredible.

And now it's time...

June 2009 was a month that brought unimaginable loss on a global scale, from martyrs being created in Iran to a Charlie's Angel, ending with the sudden loss of the King of Pop himself. I don't think I have ever known so much sadness in so short a time. I think our month of angels deserves to be acknowledged, although if you can't handle it, fair enough, that's ok too.

Michael Jackson - oh my goodness! I wasn't expecting to be close to tears again! - This is the most surprising thing of Michael Jackson's passing last Thursday: how much he meant to us without us realising. Regardless of whether we were fans or not, and most likely the majority of us moved on back in the 80s, he was an intrinsic part of our culture and our lives. He was our Elvis.

Michael Jackson was fortunate enough to have made it big when the music industry had it's strongest hold and was at its most effective, making him an almighty superstar. It probably wouldn't happen today, with the music industry in tatters and everything scattered and hard to find.

He had a genius for breaking down barriers and genres in a gentle, sensitive way. My impression of his career was he was always ready to experiment, try new things and push boundaries, whilst keeping things interesting for us as well as satisfying his own curiosity. Whether I liked the results or not, I was always willing to check out his latest release. I can't say this for everybody.

He went from child star to global superstar with issues. We were as aware of his life as we were of his music.

Something similar can be said for Farrah Fawcett, who sadly passed on the same day as Michael Jackson. She went from being a beauty queen and a much loved character in 'Charlies Angels' to chronicling her experience with cancer to the end, raising awareness and bravely submitting herself to a new perception. We saw how her beauty faded and how the illness ravaged and destroyed her. It was heartbreaking to witness. When she passed, my first thought was: she's at peace now.

I don't know if Michael Jackson thought One Day in Your Life might be his goodbye song. I held it together all night when I heard the news. I saw how many people were listening to him here in Last.fm and was deeply moved. But what threw me over the edge and got the tears rolling was when this song came on. I'm not a lyrics person, it's the tone of the song that got to me. When I looked up the lyrics, I realised I wasn't far wrong.

When he originally sang this, he was just sixteen years old. The video I have chosen is a tribute, but there is a video of him from 1975 in YouTube which is worth a look, if you're interested. It's a sad thing to watch, knowing what we know of his life. I thought my parents were strict, but I was free to finish school and sit my exams, waste an entire evening perfecting a manicure if I wanted to, hang out with my friends if I felt like it. If I got into trouble, it was usually well-deserved. My 'strict' childhood was nothing compared to his. How hard did he have to work to sound this mature and confident? What did he have to suffer?

I know I have written two reco of the week journals on Iran already (here and here) but it's difficult for me to let go. It isn't about religion, it's about civil rights. People are dying fighting for their rights. When they leave their homes, they know they might not return. I am not sure I would be so brave. To the courageous people of Iran, I salute you. And to those who passed, I remember you. This article is worth reading, if you want to understand the situation better: Iran: Myths and Realities - What do the people want?

June seems to have been a weird month of major change, deep shifts and colossal loss. As the month closes, let's think of those who have moved on.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

«Люди считают меня угрюмым. Ну что ж, наверное, это потому, что я и правда написал кучу песен про смерть и прочее дерьмо… Мне нравится писать невеселые песни», - Nick Cave.
Мрачная поэтика, ветхозаветные мотивы, рок-н-ролл, как религия… Вечно угрюмый рок-н-ролльный пророк, плоть от плоти австралийского народа каторжников, Ник Кейв в рамках европейского тура устроит в Петербурге шоу света и тьмы, как может только этот величайший певец и поэт. Его любовь к жизни сквозь самые темные и грязные ее проявления, этакая суровая витальность, выраженная в балладах, притягивает и гипнотизирует миллионы поклонников уже много лет. Четырнадцатый по счету альбом «Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!» вышел в 2008. Его вместе со своими лучшими хитами Кейв и представит 17 июля на второй сессии «Стереолета» - «Стереозакат».
А вот сам Кейв в представлении не нуждается. Армия его поклонников в России только множится с каждым годом. Слава андеграундного рок-идола пришла к Кейву в 1980х, с образованием Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. С тех пор состав коллектива неоднократно претерпевал изменения, а в прошлом году Кейв с участниками «семян» создал проект Grinderman – изящный реверанс семидесятым и гаражному року. Все, что Кейв делает и делал, неважно с Birthday Party или с Bad Seeds, - гениально, и это не новость. Существует мнение, что творчество Кейва развивается по аналогии с Ветхим и Новым заветом: от яростных неистовых песен к лиричным балладам о слове Божьем в сердце, от крикливой гитары до меланхоличного фортепиано. Но свежий альбом Ника Кейва и The Bad Seeds «Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!» - это рок в первозданном виде, смешение нойза, блюза и панка, шум и хрипы гитар, нахрапистый вокал и по-спартански серьезные тексты. «Акустический индастриал» - так он охарактеризовал новый альбом. О, да! Ник Кейв отошел от своих камерных песен и баллад, так что меланхолии и покоя не ждите! Его творчество в 2000х – это честность музыки без тени коммерции, работа человека, достигшего музыкальных высот и не спешащего за рейтингами, а профессионально делающего то, что нравится. И то, что Кейв способен выдать такой обжигающий, сносящий голову, звук, обнадеживает – есть еще запал и энергия, а значит, рок-н-ролл жив!

Husky Rescue
Финны Husky Rescue играют воздушно-нежные песни с хрупкими мелодиями, музыку абсолютно не свойственную той, что сочиняет основная масса их, одетых в черное, коллег-соотечественников. «Мы всего лишь пытаемся по мере сил растапливать лед повседневности теплыми тонами», — говорит Марко Нюберг, лидер группы. Звучание финнов и вправду вызывает ассоциации с капельными кинозарисовками советских телевизионных фильмов.
В живом составе Husky Rescue пять человек, которые сводят с ума зрителей на каждом выступлении: от маленьких камерных площадок до огромных фестивалей. В 2004 году Husky Rescue были признаны лучшим финским проектом, играющим клубную музыку. В 2005 году группа отыграла на главном фестивале Британии Glastonbury и получила приглашение от группы Morcheeba поехать вместе с ними в большой концертный тур. «Хаски» успешно гастролируют по всей Европе. Симпатичны они и россиянам, но не только из соседской солидарности, а потому что Husky Rescue невозможно не полюбить.

АЛИНА ОРЛОВА
Фортепиано и рыжеволосая девушка, поющая тоненьким голосом. Нежная кафешантанная музыка, в которой есть и французское звучание аккордеона, и скрипичные трели, и звон ксилофона. Песни на литовском, иногда на английском, редко на русском. Чудные кавер-версии, чего стоят только изложения «Утомленного солнца» или «Летели облака» ДДТ. Музыка, такая хрупкая, что ее хочется слушать в полной тишине, чтобы вдруг не нарушить гармонии звуков. Вот слагаемые явления Алина Орлова, неожиданно возникшего на постсоветском пространстве.
То, что создает Алина, называют психофолком. То, как поет Алина, сравнивают с Тори Амос, Региной Спектор и Cocorosie. Но, будучи невероятно самобытной певицей, она совершенно не подвергается анализу, определениям, сравнениям. Орлова, усмехаясь, говорит в интервью Rolling Stone: «У нас не так уж много чего в музыке происходит - потому, наверное, меня и заметили». Так и есть. Настолько непохожая на все, что мы слышали, Орлова уже издала дебютный альбом «Дикая собака динго» - настоящую «повесть о первой любви»: пронзительные и печальные песни перемежаются с мелодиями по-детски радостными. Алина строго выдерживает границу между трогательным и сентиментальным - когда уже сердце щемит и комок появляется в горле, она непременно затягивает что-то бодрое и солнечное.

КАССИОПЕЯ
Фрики из столицы Белоруссии – города, в котором, похоже, никогда ничего не происходит – успешно доказывают, что музыка их страны не ограничивается унылым «Славянским Базаром». Удивительное музыкальное созвездие «Кассиопея» посылает Земле сигналы, зашифрованные в экспериментальной электронике, абсурдных текстах и выкриках то ли ребенка, то ли бьющегося в религиозном экстазе мужчины. Это дикий психомаскарад в духе Бартенева, который, кстати, является поклонником группы, только что музыкальный. Свой стиль они называют «спец-попом», и, действительно, на свежем альбоме есть несколько настоящих хитов. Собственно, такой и должна быть хорошая поп-музыка.

НЕГРУЗОВИКИ
НеГрузовики – сайд-проект солиста известной группы « … и друг мой грузовик» Антона Слепакова. Идея немного поменять свой творческий курс, наверное, приходит в голову многим музыкантам. Все началось с большого количества написанных Антоном текстов, которые никак не вмещались в рамки проекта. Тогда и появилась мысль сделать еще одну группу, играющую несколько иную музыку, чем это могли бы Грузовики. Минималистичное серьезное звучание, яркие поэтические образы и почти хип-хоп декламация с альбома «Не улыбаются» по звучанию ближе к лучшим записям лейблов Ninja Tune и Warp, чем к ДМГ. Музыка здесь — сухой, емкий и напряженный лаунж, сыгранный живьем; «Не улыбаются» – одна из лучших пластинок года, уже выложенная днепропетровскими виртуозами для бесплатного скачивания в сети, – слушайте.

188910
Проект 188910 родом из Приморска, маленького закрытого городка на берегу Финского залива, где в сосновых лесах пролегала линия Маннергейма. Собственно 188910 и есть индекс родного городка двух Александров, гитариста и барабанщика, репетировавших свои первые экспериментально-психоделические этюды в Лютеранской кирхе, превращенной в ДК.
Все шумы и эффекты выжимаются из старенького ревербератора, ручки которого крутит барабанщик, параллельно играя на установке. С 2009 года к 188910 присоединилась сексапильная басистка с мифической фамилией Гамаюн, а на клавишных играет Галя Чикис. Брутальное диско, так, смеясь, называют свою музыку 188910 – что ж, термин обаятелен, как и музыка этой молодой группы.

Postman of Nobel
Группа с родины мировой космонавтики, из Калуги, четыре года выступала на главном городском празднике 12 апреля у подножия корабля «Восток». А потом, решив, что пора покорять новые пространства (и бороздить новые просторы), двинулась в Москву. После первого же концерта в Б2 Postman of Nobel полюбились московской публике и прессе. И, надо заметить, вполне заслуженно, ведь живое шоу «почтальонов» - это настоящий перформанс с музыкальными импровизациями и визуальными инсталляциями. А еще, играя прогрессив-инди-рок, Postman of Nobel не забывают пропагандировать среди молодежи здоровый образ жизни.

Dasaev
Соул, панк, idm, электро, диско… чем больше стилей, тем лучше! «Фрики-интеллектуалы с наплечными синтезаторами и гитарами «стрела», поющие про Sega, Юрмалу образца 83го года и аэробику на модной волне ностальгии по СССР. Музыкантов из Краснодара почему-то зовут Артур Поло и Ханс Дайл. Последний, кстати, преподаватель математической логики. Не удивительно, что ребята с такими псевдонимами чаще появляются в Европе, чем в России: лейбл в Осло, прямые эфиры на национальном радио Норвегии, норвежские фестивали и клубы. Свою привязанность к Скандинавии Dasaev объясняют тем, что на родине слушать индитронику готовы только Москва и Питер, а вот стоит выехать из мегаполиса – сразу столкнешься с непониманием любителей гитарного рока и «колбасы». Ну, а на фестивале «Стереолето» редкая музыка проекта наверняка будет оценена по достоинству.

Nina Karlsson
NINA KARLSSON – особенная певица, что, конечно, всем петербуржцам давно известно. Она могла бы петь для поэтов серебряного века, эта красивая девушка, кстати, с консерваторским образованием, что является несомненным плюсом для современного музыканта. KARLSSON сама пишет музыку, тексты, поет, играет на клавишных и завоевывает все большую аудиторию: вслед за концертами в клубах А2 и «Грибоедов» у нее уже было выступление в БКЗ на открытии «Ночи пожирателей рекламы» и на «Музыка + Кино» в кинотеатре Родина.

Re`sequence
Для непривычного уха питерский проект Re`sequence звучит сложновато, но так, пожалуй, и должно быть с музыкой, которая скорее является художественным объектом, чем развлекательной мелодией. Дима Аникин пишет музыку для арт-проектов, участвующих в художественных выставках и показах, там же ее сам и играет, склонившись над ноутбуком. Этажи, D137, ГЦСИ, Винзавод, Московский театральный музей – в его послужном списке больше московских галерей. Знакомая виолончелистка наигрывает несколько музыкальных фраз для сэмплов, а он превращает их в отличную даун-темпо-композицию под названием «Шекспир».

Model Reign
Юные пижоны из петербургской команды Model Reign играют пост-панк, признают влияние Joy Division и The Сure, особо не оригинальничают и поют, конечно, же по-английски. На русский язык тексты лучше не переводить, дабы не разочароваться в молодом музыкальном андеграунде. Англофилы и модники Model Reign балансируют между андеграундом и гламуром: то играют в клубе Мод, то участвуют в фотосессии для журнала Собака.ру.

Mamanet
Еще одна группа, представляющая Украину на Стереолете, - Mamanet. Отлично зарекомендовавшая себя команда из Донецкой области уже выступала на Казантипе, фестивале Джаз Коктебель, где ребята играли перед Red Snapper, на фестивале Гоголь Fеst. Трип-хоп, драм-н-басс, эйсид-джаз – синтез различных стилей в живом исполнении Mamanet удостоился похвал журнала Rolling Stone, а киевский «журнал культурного сопротивления ШО» даже назвал их «украинскими Red Snapper», чем группа, конечно, очень гордится. Так ли это, Вы поймете на Стереолете. В любом случае, стоит послушать дебютный альбом Mamanet «KI-MONO».

ЛАРИК СУРАПОВ
Псковитянин Ларик Сурапов лидирует в интернет-голосовании развлекательного реалити-шоу “Фабрика звезд”, куда подался с вполне четкой целью – выразить протест современной штампованной поп-музыке. Музыкант и MC Сурапов пишет смешные хип-хоп-тексты и наговаривает их под псевдокосмические электронные звуки – тут и экспериментальная музыка, и русский рэп. «Будто расшалившегося ребенка поставили на стул, а он с выражением прочитал, допустим, Хлебникова», - описывает Афиша невиданный, немного наивный, способ его ломаной читки. Сам же Ларик называет свой стиль spaceage hip-hop и готовится представить плоды своего «будетлянского» творчества в Петербурге.

2deep
Квинтет 2deep играет отличную музыку для танцев и размеренного отдыха. Электроника под аккомпанемент гитары, клавишных и саксофонов не оставит равнодушным самого придирчивого эстета. Джаз, хаус и лаунж в правильных пропорциях хороши и для шумного бара, и для кухонных посиделок. Приятный петербургский стиль игры 2deep уже прижился в городских клубах и наверняка придется по душе всем отдыхающим на этом Стереолете.

RB MUSIC ACADEMY STAGE
Санкт Петербург - последний, четвертый город, которому выпала честь увидеть своми глазами, что представляет из себя один день из жизни Red bull Music Academy. Итак 17 июля кроме Главной сцены и Сцены Открытий на фестивале будет представлено третье музыкальное пространство - сцена музыкальной академии Red Bull:

Ommas Keith (USA)
Земляк LL Cool J из нью-йоркского района Холлис Квинс, один из трех участников проекта SA-RA Creative Partners, который совсем недавно выпустила свой новый альбом на лейбле Ubiquity Records. Ом’Мас внес свой индивидуальный стиль в модные ритмы гангста-электро-соул проектов с 50 Cent, Kanye West, Erykah Badu и
J Dilla.
Om'Mas играет на всех возможных инструментах, поет, крутит пластинки и на сегодняшний день знает музыкальный бизнес, как свои пять пальцев. Поэтому на Стереолете Om`Mas Keith проведет мастер-класс для студентов Red Bull Academy.
На лекцию, которая начнется в 19:00, смогут прийти все желающие. Om`mas расскажет, как развивалась хип-хоп индустрия и продемонстрирует принципы работы с популярным семплером Akai MPC. Подробности на сайте

Участник Red Bull Music Academy 2006 - Marc Freidli или Skymark увлекается соул-фанк музыкой с раннего детства – уже с 4х лет он начал играть на клавишных, с 10ти коллекционировать пластинки – сейчас его коллекция насчитывает около 15000 единиц, некоторые стоимостью по несколько сотен евро. The second series of Ashes To Ashes came to a brilliant end last night with a terrifying close and the hint of a possible third series. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but it was as unexpected as it was impressive.

One of the songs in last night's episode was The Associates - Club Country. I've wanted to reco The Associates for a long time, so I'm nabbing the opportunity.

For most of the 1990s, some of my friends complained there wasn't any good music in the 80s. It was probably to wind me up because my jaw would always drop and I'd start reeling off a list. Either that or all they knew was Dollar and Bucks Fizz and I really am the coolest person the planet has ever seen...

I'm good at my genre classifications but even after all these years, I still couldn't begin to place Party Fears Two or the masterpiece of an album it comes from, Sulk. It's a perfect example of genre-breaking originality.

The song is about the tail end of a party, when excitement is still in the air but the desperate signs that it's over are beginning to show. The music begins with glitzy, shiny synthpop, glittering with promise, belying the darkness underneath in the lyrics, "The alcohol loves you while turning you blue". Delivered with MacKenzie's multi-octave vocals, the whole is a track that once heard, is never forgotten.

Lead vocalist, Billy MacKenzie, who ranks alongside Scott Walker and David Bowie for his distinctive, unforgettable voice, also wrote the lyrics for Yello's The Rhythm Divine and sang backing vocals on the version which became a big hit in Europe sung by Shirley Bassey. You can hear his original version on Popera: The Singles Collection (1990).

It is impossible to talk about Billy MacKenzie without mentioning his tragic suicide in 1997 at the age of 39, soon after the death of his mother. From Wikipedia:
The Cure song "Cut Here" written by Robert Smith, a friend of MacKenzie, is about his suicide. Siouxsie Sioux wrote the song "Say" about his suicide, revealing in the lyrics that they were going to meet just before his suicide. The song was released as a single in 1999 and charted in the UK Top 75. For her Medúlla album, Björk considered singing a beyond the grave duet with MacKenzie using recordings given to her by his father, but eventually decided against it.

The song marks the peak of The Associates' career. Alan Rankine left the band in 1982 just before the Sulk Tour. There was a brief reunion in 1993 but by and large, MacKenzie and Rankine pursued solo careers, Rankine becoming a record producer, producing such artists as The Pale Fountains, Cocteau Twins and Paul Haig, then music lecturer at Stow College in Glasgow, where he worked with Belle & Sebastian on their debut album, Tigermilk.

They've done it again.

Hell and Billie Ray Martin have teamed up again to add the icing on the cake to the Japanese release of Hell's album Teufelswerk.
The cover version of Hawkwind's 'Silver Machine' has been praised by many as more than a worthy follow up of their 2003 collaboration on the Billie Ray Martin penned 'Je Regrette Everything'.

so brm rocked south america. here are some bits from the shows in sao paolo and buenos aires.

In fact, everyone is already used to defining music by the Kyiv group NimB as trip-hop. I
could hardly say that there are no grounds for this – but no more than for definitions like
acid beat or electronic fusion, dawn cartoon or smooth optionality. In the end, everything
boils down to that it is considerably more interesting to listen to this music than to name
it somehow. Atmospheric and inverted guitars, the pulse and melodiousness of the bass,
separate patterns of the "drawn" percussion against the background of the not always
unambiguous main rhythms – and the interwoven braids of the characteristic, emotional vocal
by Olena Sas, crystal-clean and warm at the same time. It might seem that everything is
simple – but this is sort of correct, saturated simplicity that makes it transparent and
soft inside. Because virtually in every melody there are windows that lead sometimes to
other houses, sometimes to other cities or countries, and sometimes even to other time
dimensions. Not only because it is possible to hear here, if you wish, various influences.
But also because this music, surprisingly, truly lives on a verge – as though still in a
night, but already literally a step before the morning. And that is why it offers freshness
and the presentiment of quiet light. And – the relaxed but so needed – joy.
