It may be the hottest rap debut this century. It comes not from a junior member of some famous rap crew, not from the gritty streets of some underloved American city, and not from the lab of some major label. No, Camp comes from the mind of actor & comedian Donald Glover. “Another actor-turned-rapper?” you might say, but trust us this one is for real. As Childish Gambino, Glover brings an indie rock sensibility to the rap game, reinventing the “brag tracK” (on “Bonfire”) and including everyone in one massive inside joke.

Read more & watch live: Donald Glover Is “Childish Gambino” – Watch Him Perform Songs From “Camp”

Vie 28 Oct – Kaiser Chiefs, Second, SuperSubmarina, Nipples!

Kaiser Chiefs. Aparecieron y ya fui feliz. Abrieron el concierto con Everyday I Love You Less and Less, empezaron fuertes.

¡Y no llovió!

Every city worth its chops as a center for the arts has its own music festival – Chicago has Lollapalooza and Pitchfork, Austin has Austin City Limits and SXSW, Los Angeles has Coachella and New York has CMJ. Each of these shows are reflective of the culture of the city, none more so than CMJ.

cmj is different from your standard music festival in that it’s not one big event in a single large area, but rather ton of small events that take place in venues all over the city. The experience is something distinctly “new york,” hopping from place to place seeing as many different shows as you can in a single night.

It can be exhausting, but the effort is well worth it because along the way you’re sure to see and experience many different parts of the city. New York is a city of exploration. With so many different types of people packed into a relatively small space, there is an infinite amount of places to discover. You never know what you’re going to find when travelling around the city, and so by checking out all these shows you’re bound to encounter interesting things – whether it’s the venue the band is playing at, the bar around the corner that you get a beer at afterward the show or maybe a store you stop at on the way there.

CMJ itself is reflective of this atmosphere of discovery. It is the premier event for seeing up and coming bands. Anyone who is trying to make it as a musician plays at CMJ. It is THE place to see bands before they blow up. Next year, many of the groups that you see playing in some packed tiny bar will be playing huge venues with thousands of people in attendance.

With hundreds of artists performing all over the city, it’s impossible to see everything. The best thing to do is take a look at the schedule and figure out a plan of attack.

To get you started we’ve got a track by rising Brooklyn pop star Class Actresswho played shows with the Carpark/Paw Tracks, Blue Flowers and Puma/SPIN showcases and one by Delicate Steve who played at the Stereogum/PopGun showcase and at DROM.

Grab a free song from Delicate Steve on MP3.com

Grab a free song from Class Actress from MP3.com

The entire week of CMJ MP3.com and Last.fm/discover were on the scene at tons of CMJ shows and posting tons of free music, photos, reviews & exclusive interviews. Dig deep and check out all of our coverage!

Read more: Spotlight: NYC’s CMJ Music Festival

There have been plenty of Batman-related songs from major artists like Prince, Method Man, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, The Offspring and plenty more through history. But now with the reigning success of the Batman Franchise across multiple mediums, it’s time for a new batch of young talent to sing the tale of the Dark Knight … and what better platform than the epic saga/sequel video game: Arkham City.

A video game so grandiose & so in-depth could only be justified with a soundtrack lineup featuring such a broad spectrum of musical styling. From pop to metal, it’s diversity is it’s strength as each song stands on it’s own while simultaneously building upon each other in order to blend all of the chaos together in the end. The sound alone sufficiently tells the story of the showdown between The Bat and his rogues gallery of villains, of course highlighting the notorious Joker.

Some highlights include tracks like Panic! At the Disco‘s “Mercenary” wherein a soundbyte (starring one of the video game’s primary antagonists, Hugo Strange), plants a creepy yet powerful sense of doubt in the listeners head… mostly because it’s presentation is so heavily reminiscent of Vincent Price’s voice-over cameo in Michael Jackson‘s Thriller. The song itself fleshes out this concept of ‘duty and consequence’ and further analyzes the [spoilers!] death of the Wayne family. This really sets the mood for the game and the stage for a majority of the main character’s potential development. The ultimate question at hand being: IS Batman responsible for the rise of Gotham’s super-villains after all?

Another highlight from the soundtrack would be “The Years” by (†††). This slow, atmospheric piece sweeps to a big epic industrial feature track putting a heavy emphasis the dark, menacing idyllic representation of the gothic timbre of Gotham City itself. The tune hearkens to the likes of heavier Smashing Pumpkins ballads and takes a particular perspective on the nearly symbiotic relationship shared by Batman and the Joker.

Taking it one step further, we find Coheed and Cambria, who composed a chilling, playful and pensive song called “Deranged.” We were able to sit down and talk with Claudio Sanchez at this year’s New York Comic-Con where he was able to fill us in on how Coheed’s participation in the soundtrack came to be.

Read more: Batman: Arkham City Soundtrack Review & Exclusive Interview

Watch now as Joe warms up the Street Date studios with his new song “Dear Joe” off his brand new album The Good The Bad The Sexy which is out now.

You may remember Joe from such super-smooth R&B ballads as “All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)” and “Thank God I Found You” (with Mariah Carey). Or if you’re more inclined towards hip hop, you may have first encountered Joe in 2000 when his song “Stutter” topped the charts, with rap verses supplied by Mystikal.
