Sat 30 Jan – BeatiFull Dawn Part IV

Iets later aangekomen voor deze 4de editie reeds van Beatfull Dawn en ik moet zeggen ze leren uit hun ''fouten'' want alles was blijkbaar op tijd begonnen een heel groot pluspunt , het valt dan ook niet te onderschatten zoiets organiseren en er voor zorgen dat alles in goede banen kan worden geleid want al bij al blijft het toch werk van vrijwilligers die hun vrije tijd hiervoor opofferen, chapeau hiervoor

Dit gezegd zijnde, over naar de optredens. Een niet zo talrijke opgekomen publiek maar toch ''redelijk goed'' gevuld jeugdhuis. De eerste act gemist doordat we iets later waren toegekomen en net op tijd om nog een paar nummers mee te pikken van Misery iets te weinig om een echt goed oordeel over te vellen maar wat ik hoorde en zag beviel me ten zeerste de combinatie van prachtige ''female voice'' met de donkere keyboards werkte gewoon perfect, voor herhaling vatbaar deze

Tweede band van de avond XMH (eigenlijk derde maar goed) brachten een mix van zware donkere beats met combinatie van de stem van Benjamin Samson afgewisseld met de 'girl power' van Charlot Wever zorgde voor een wel heel krachtige en intens optreden vooral de partijen waar Charlot de zang over nam kwamen het best over. Niet direct heel vernieuwend deze band maar een ''leuke aanwinst'' voor het EBM genre

En dan de meest verassende en wat mij betreft een van de beste acts op de 4 Beatfull Dawn fests tot nu toe Deviant UK. Heel donkere beats gecombineerd met de wel heel opvallende podium act van Jay Smith die een beetje deed denken aan Satan himself . Met wilde gebaren en zijn wel heel doordringende blik bracht hij het publiek volledig en geheel in vervoering en aan het dansen, want daar gaat het toch om dansen ? En dan hebben we het nog niet over de sound die de band voortbrengt , ge combinatie van keyboard met percussie geeft een wel heel speciaal sfeertje.. een van de betere bands die ik het genre al heb gezien en gehoord

Moeilijk voor de headliner van de avond om dit te evenaren , maar Implant deed meer dan hun best om daar in te slagen. Hun samenwerking met oa Ann Clark en Front242 zijn pluspunten om U tegen te zeggen, en ook al bleef ik met momenten beetje op mijn honger zitten er zaten heel sublieme momenten tussen, vooral dan als de voice van Ann Clark , ook al was ze daar jammer genoeg niet lijfelijk aanwezig, door de boxen klonk, een ander plus punt de soms naar Front242 gelinkte songs, de geweldige donkere voice van Len. Een geslaagd optreden? Zeker en vast, maar ik was persoonlijk beetje murwn geslagen door hun voorganger om er echt 100% van te genieten..

Fri 22 Jan – Nitzer Ebb + PNE + Ionic Vision

Het eerste concertje van het jaar , het was al geleden van 15 december, bracht ons naar Hof Ter Lo voor een EBM/Industrial avondje.

Ionic Vision mocht de avond openen voor een goed opgekomen publiek. Ze deden dit met het combineren van harde beats en beelden op het scherm. Niet slecht maar ook met momenten beetje naar de eentonige kant, hoewel de combinatie van drum en bass beats met de diepe grafstem me wel konden bekoren, een beetje meer variatie had leuk geweest

Die variatie was er wel met Plastic Noise Experience en hoe. Ook hier combinatie van strakke beats met beelden op het scherm. Een goede interactie met het publiek en leuke variaties die je aan het dansen zetten en blijven zetten. In zo ver dat ze zelfs mochten terug komen voor een bisronde. Een geweldig goed optreden van deze Plastic Noise Experience.

De hoofdact van de avond Nitzer Ebb spelen zaterdag in het voorprogramma van Depeche Mode, de fans mochten nu al eens komen genieten naar de voorstelling van hun nieuwste cd "Industrial Complex" ze brachten dan ook een combinatie van EBM met Industrial , die combinatie zorgde voor soms eerder ''ingetogen'' momenten gecombineerd met opzwepende harde momenten. Een goede 90min lang werd het publiek stevig in de greep gehouden door een wel heel bewegelijke zanger die het publiek aanmaande mee te dansen, wat het goed vol gelopen Hof Ter Lo dan ook ten volle deed. Ze mochten dan ook geheel terecht twee keer terug komen voor een bisronde. Een uiterst geslaagd optreden en veelbelovend voor deze avond in voorprogramma van Depeche Mode

The Belgium/US/Mexico collective Llips. with key-members Koen Lybaert, Jeff Mcillwain (better known as Lusine), Esther Santoyo Rio, Steven Lambrechts, Ivy Smits, Chantal Yzermans, Dave Vanderplas, have been creating an impressive catalogue in a very short period. (from 1999 to 2003) They've explored a range of musical forms, enjoyed making music for this project, and came with new ideas and experiments with each release always trying to bring something beautiful that could touch peoples senses.
On the 7th of December at the Observatori 2001 in Valencia, Llips. performed their last gig and placed a final point on their short but creative existence. After a short delay, their last and final work has been beautifuly released by the french label FBWL in february 2003.

Starfish Pool is the electronic project of Koen Lybaert that was active between 1993 and 2003. Starfish Pool was working in the experimental area of minimal, rhythmic, ambient, noise, in all its aspects. Since the very start it was the manipulation of loops that was the basic idea of the way tracks were created as Starfish Pool. This concept has nothing to do with the sound, but more with the way that tracks where practically made. In 10 years time starfish pool had more than 25 releases most of them are sold out but some of the last copies are still available on u-cover's mailorder

Ontayso is formed in the spring of 2002 by Esther Santoyo (Mexico) and Koen Lybaert (Belgium) and mainly focused on electronic ambient with traces of dub, techno and idm. Ontayso creates music, video and graphics and has over the year made several releases beside for U-cover (Koen Lybaerts own] on labels as Smallfish (2007), Silentes (2005) and Tantric Harmonies (2002).

In 2006/2007 they worked out the 24 hours Box-set with 25 CDr releases of 1 hour each and a two CD selection. Between november 2006 and october 2007 Ontayso has been working on this unique project. The title 'Project 24 hours' says it all: Ontayso presents 24 hours of music!

The music is created around a complete day of field recordings and worked out in exactly 24 times 1 hour. The music covers all styles Ontayso likes to create and explore, going from minimal ambient to idm to melodic lo-fi. This will be an intense journey through subtle melodies, dub-influenced moments, dark and mystic ambient. All field recordings and pictures are taken in the surroundings of Ontayso's new place at the awesome Belgian countryside.

The result of this one-year project was presented during 12 months. Two CDrs were released every month, each one containing 1 hour of music, packed in a beautiful transparent trimpack. All the CDrs are archived in a handy and minimalistic transparent box. Every release comes with an full colour picture. taken by Koen Lybaert. The first limited edition of 45 copies from this box is sold out. From the second limited edition of 35 copies there are still a few copies available at the u-cover mailorder (http://www.u-cover.com/mailorder/artists-one.php?ToOne=209&UID=20070326025245¤cy=eur&lang=).

Since 2009 they started to work on a 10 release serie around the abstract paintings of Koen Lybaert. Koen Lybaert is a Belgian artist active in different art fields. And with this abstract serie he combines his passions for painting with his love for abstract minimal music. Inspired by his series of abstract paintings he will created a 10 part serie of minimal neo-classical ambient music that confronts us with one the most spiritual aspects of his artistic work.

It’s not so long ago that I discovered Ontayso. I’m a frequent U-cover mailorder orderer and the output of the label resembles my intrests. (Tim Hecker, Taylor Deupree, Proem, Fennesz, …) So I agreed to receive the newsletter. It was the CD re-issue of Score Of An Imaginary Iceland that caught my attention, a Belgian ambient act, why not (I recently started the Belgian Ambient group and was out for some discoveries). So I played it in my car. And it became a week or two and I had difficulties putting on another record. I was an instant fan and I decided to buy more stuff. I went to the u-cover shop and looked up their discography. And freaked out. !!!47 releases!!! I didn’t know if I was ready to dive in an adventure this big. So I doubted it a bit.

A few weeks after I received another newsletter where Koen announced the release of the abstract series with the first issue. So I decided to start there. And boy I didn’t regret that a second. In my top 10 of 2009 albums the series up till now (1 to 5) are N°1. and recently abstract series N°6 joined the club. I never heard this perfect match of ambient, glitch, dub , scape before. So I ‘m a fan and yes one day I will have all those releases, but just give me some time I’m just a poor Social Worker… :D

SMph017: the mist toggles / Baron Knoxburry - Unconventional

I love how the mist toggles in Baron Knoxburry. Familiar techiques, but different equipment. This is low-fi like you've never heard it before, a lot of bass, intertwined with chiptuned beats, it even has recognizable structures and melodies, something we're not familiar with here. I probably would have said "No thank you" if it weren't so beautiful. Even if you're no fan of chiptune or the low-fi sounds, I'm betting this split album will change your mind. But don't panic, the Baron provides us with the noise we so crave. Still lo-fi/-bit, but less structural and more distortion. Limited to 30 copies.

Het Muzikale jaar 2009 volgens Gert

Okidoki Veel ambient en abstracte experimentalia in mijn collectie in 2009. 2 rockbommen die steevast een scheurkrater slaan. Veel Belgen die de helden naar huis spelen/releasen. De enigste musical waar ik op vrijwillige basis naar gaan kijken ben, met 2 vrienden die me uiterst verrast hebben (Anatevka, fiddler on the Roof, CC De Mol, Lier).

Verder 1 nieuw eigen muziekproject samen met Pieter Delafortrie (naam nog in onderhandeling) waarmee zelf al 1 (en tevens ook het enige op heel het jaar) optreden gedaan waarbij ik voor de eerste maal achter de knopjes stond, maar waarbij het duidelijk was dat er nog veel schaafwerk aan was. De release van het tweede Distant Fires Burning album “7 Sisters” Met zeer mooie commentaren van de Pers. Een kleine feature van mijn sounds in een geweldig toneelstuk geschreven door Roel Spoelders (De Wereld is om zeep, Joenktoneel, Bonheiden) En een sisyphuswerk van een zoektocht naar een zangeres/zanger !!

En O ja de single van 2009 was toch Envoi van Absynthe Minded!! Dit was muzikaal 2009 voor mij

1) Ontayso – Abstract Series N°01 – 05: Dé Ontdekking van 2009, Belgisch (Geel) en de perfecte mix tussen ambient,dub en electronica. Wat minder is, is dat Ontayso nog een immens arsenaal aan andere releases heeft die ik dan ook nog moet hebben!!
2) Deepspace – The Glittering Domain: Prachtig Debuut! Wie had ooit gedacht dat zulke ambient uit Australië zou komen
3) Pearl Jam – Backspacer: De rotsvaste brok compromisloze rock in mijn eindejaarslijstes. Niet uit weg te slaan (Scheurkrater 1)!!
4) Biosphere – Wireless – Live at The Arnolfini, Bristol: Een van de minder stunning releases van Biosphere, Een live registratie die buiten een paar experimenten weinig verschil geeft met de versies op de platen. MAAR het blijft gewoon BIOSPHERE
5) Oubys – Surrender: Belgisch, 2 tracks ambient-dub-glitch Techno maar een kleine bom uit Hasselt die ten huize Wezelstraat is binnengevallen
6) Tim Hecker – An Imaginary Country: Beklijvende gitaarstukjes met de gebruikelijke containers effecten
7) Bpolar – Pheromones: Belgisch en weerom de perfecte mix tussen ambient, Drone, Glitch en abstract contemporary, telkens weer een van de must haves
8) Jonas Ruchenhever – Somber: Belgisch en toch een van de donkerste releases die ik dit jaar gekocht heb en dit zonder de schoonheid ervan te verliezen.
9) Fever Ray – Fever Ray: Op de valreep wegens eindejaarscadeautje maar zeer goed bevallen dus
10) Harmonic 313 – When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence: Iets anders dan Global Communication maar als dubstep en grime beluisterde plaat zeker niet slecht.

During his career Ah Cama-Sotz has carved a niche for himself as one of the darkest industrial acts around. His music is steeped in a multitude of mythology, occultism and bloody history, which lend a context and significance to the individual works that is noticeably absent from a lot of contemporary industrial / noise music. The past 16 years have seen the Ah Cama-Sotz sound progress from cold, minimalist electronics through to dark ambient soundscapes and pounding techno floor-fillers.

Herman's boyhood infatuation of classical music has prominantly formed the foundation of his present musicality. Subsequently his fascination for "dance" led him into DJ'ing in clubs and local pirate radio stations, where he noticed the incessant evolution and metamorphosis of " dance " and experimental music. Yet, he didn't want to remain a passive onlooker and aspired to formulate his individual sound, by mean of acquiring synths and samplers. His objective was to combine his musical passion and esoteric ideology which resulted in an obscure and macabre but rhythmic and atmospherically sound. This project required an appropriate moniker, which could integrate and mirror all those constituents.

When wandering in Mexico he uncovered local mythology and found his alter ego: " Ah Cama-Sotz ", named after a giant bat which used his extremely elongated sharp claws to decapitate his victims. In the mid-eighties he recorded his first tracks, which were given airplay on a controversial local radio station, " radio centraal ". While on the air he attracted the attention of an electronic/ritual band called " Hybryds " which resulted into a ritual-ambient project/recording for the Antwerp zoo: " Soundtrack voor het aquarium " (project by Hybrids and Vidna Obmana). When listening to Ah Cama-Sotz' recordings you will ascertain his mephystological values interpolated with rhythmical-ritual ambience and accentuated with industrial vibes.

Ah Cama-Sotz will transport your subconscious in a mythical universe where his alter ego " Ah Cama-Sotz " haunts the night and proliferates anxiety amidst every living creature. Ah Cama-Sotz' music reflects the epitome of mankind's mis(t)ery and (in)humanity.
