I’m really getting into this post-rock stuff now. Since my previous entry praising This Will Destroy You (You can read the journal entry here) I’ve taken to downloading a whole raft of post-rock music and this is just one of the many great songs I’ve stumbled upon.

Cover art for God Is An Astronaut painted by Dave King.
“This is how I felt after letting go of 24 years of grief. If anybody is holding on to baggage from the past, let it go. Forgive and love yourself. Otherwise, it’s hard to love anybody. You will feel the world move while you move those around you.”

- Dave King comments on his cover art
Post Mortem is a greatly uplifting song. So bright and energetic you can almost feel it exude a comforting warm glow. Unusually for a post-rock song, rather than gradually build up to something load and spectacular, this gives you spectacular from the very beginning. It explodes into life with a scream of guitars and a burst of drums and though it later calms, the momentum of that first minute or so really carries through, echoing that brilliant riff. Yes, yes, yes, I love it.

I’ve now set it as my alarm tone and I’ll tell you, it’s a great way to wake up in the morning, no matter what might lie in the day ahead.

Note: My post-rock library has now expanded to also include Godspeed You! Black Emperor, If These Trees Could Talk and Russian Circles upon recommendation. But I’m still on the lookout for more so any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I play fantasy baseball. Every year around April I join a public Yahoo! League where you choose your fantasy team from all active players regardless of league. I am in competition with 14 other team owners. I pick a player for every position plus a few bench players, starting pitchers and relief pitchers A team’s final placement is determined by performance-based statistics over the season.

My strategy is to pick an All-Star Team roster of 20 players based on past performance. However, once the season starts anything can happen. There is always the chance the team’s performance will far exceeds my expectations or the players’ individual statistics.

What about a Blues Artist fantasy league? I have wondered about it. Team owners could pick a cadre of artists in competition against other teams. Could an elite group of blues artists come together just for one album and produce a masterpiece wildly exceeding all expectations? read more: Pinetop

The best rhythm and blues band of the 80s. Hands down. Oh sure there were R&B and soul bands masquerading about using all kinds of unnecessary synths and drum machines. But if you want a band that could rock a juke joint till the break of dawn, these were the guys you called.

3. The Dells - Nadine

The fun thing here is that the Dells actually got started as a doo wop act. This 1970 hit finds them reliving their early days to sweet love effect.

The fabulous (Detroit) Spinners had seen their string of 70s hits dry up by 1977 and used this reworking of the Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons classic to reclaim their own past glory. The song hit #2 pop and #6 R&B in 1980. Seems to have worked nicely.

Best known for the initially jazzy and then quite disco thumpin' hit Boogie Nights and the unstoppable, so-hot-it's-about-to-come-off-the-tracks hit The Groove Line, this American/British band could also make it quite mellow. Great horn chart to boot.

No existirán.

Saludos
