No video this week, we're catching this guy from the start.

Last.fm

Last week, I lost a dear old friend unexpectedly. He was only 38. I've not known what to think since I heard. At our age, our friends are supposed be around till we're all grey-haired and comparing walking sticks. It's not supposed to happen now.

It wasn't until I heard Listen that the tears finally came. So this week's reco is a very personal one.

The song begins with distant rumbling thunder and rain, all very atmospheric, which made me smile. As a device, it sets the scene but it isn't really necessary, all the power is in the words.

Reading around, I'm not surprised to learn Ocean Reid began writing poetry before moving on to songs. The lyrics are simple and, to my mind, on a par with other great songs about loss and bereavement. In delivery, Ocean allows his voice to crack. Another device but one I don't begrudge.

Thanks to my friend Charliff for the tip today. Isn't it funny how things come to you when you need them?

Hope my reco this week helps others. The rest of the album is as heartfelt and beautiful. You can buy it from Ocean's official site for £3.00! I just did. Even though it's on-demand and free in Last.fm. I just wanted to show my gratitude.

Another quick album review, I won't waste your time.

Oasis finally convert a Mancunian to listen to an album of theirs.

It's true. Even though they were practically my neighbours when we were all kids, only living a mile or so from ours, even though I try to support my fellow Mancs no matter what, I couldn't bring myself to listen to a whole album of theirs till now. What it is is the whine. It's the accent and the attitude. Everything I didn't like about south Manchester turned into an art form and emulated the world over. How it made me cringe.

I haven't looked at the reviews for the new album too closely yet; one of the shouts on their page in Last.fm says they're not favourable. I don't really care, I like to listen 'blind'. Listening today, I was impressed. The whine has finally been put to rest and what we have is more of The Beatles in their later years. I loved it on first listen.

Noel Gallagher - more of him, less of the other one

The whole thing is on their MySpace, prior to general release tomorrow. The first track to force me to go see was (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady. That's the track that has made me want the album. As in possess. This is a first.

There are no anthemic tracks on this album, the whole thing is a held back, understated affair, a slow-burner for some fans most probably. For me, it's the understatedness that I like so much. It's this that will have me put the album on. I don't know anyone who has the time to listen to albums like we used to: sat next to the record player, the door closed and no one allowed in. Now, we listen on our mobile devices anytime we want, or somewhere in the house whilst we get on with other things. We don't necessarily want demanding music that insists on full-on attention all the time, great as it is in small doses. If Dig Out Your Soul is being marked down by critics for not being full-on, I predict we the listeners will be the ones marking it up, chalking up regular plays in Last.fm. The album is pretty much 'easy-listening'. If that's damning in your eyes, go play with your Tonka toys, grown ups are talking.
It's absolutely years since I heard some good lovers rock. This track, from upcoming US artist Jazmine Sullivan, is singular in its mix of return to roots and contemporary soul. 'Killer' is the word other people have used. Yes, that's Missy Elliott in the video. No, I didn't recognise her straight away either.

The hype machine is only just beginning behind this girl in the UK. In the States, the single went to number one in the Billboard R&B charts in the summer.
A quick album review whilst I'm here: Fearless has a few highlights - Need U Bad, the sublime Lions, Tigers & Bears, One Night Stand and In Love With Another Man. Dream Big is rather decent electro. The hype will have you believe you're listening to the new Aretha Franklin. Listen to that and you'll be disappointed. Approach the album as I did, with an open mind, and let it play a few times. Behind the big tracks are songs which promise greater things to come. The strength in Fearless lies in its exquisite music and lightness of touch from the people behind the scenes - Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Cool & Dre as well as a number of less well known producers. With a good balance of strong and quiet tracks, the album makes for an exceedingly good listen. Vocally, comparisons have been made with Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Jill Scott amongst others. Fair comments but Jazmine Sullivan has something else in her voice far, far more powerful than any of these great ladies, in my opinion. Or maybe it's just me. She sang with Stevie Wonder when she was only 13, so I can't be far wrong.

One of my favourite tracks of the last decade is Leila's Won't You Be My Baby, Baby. I heard it on one of those free compilation CDs you get with music magazines. Most people would say they haven't heard of her, but more likely they just managed to miss the non-too successful hype. Even I managed to miss the release of her second album in 2000. Blood, Looms & Blooms is her third, released in July this year.

Time To Blow features our old chum Terry Hall, who I wrote about only a month ago. So good to see him again! The video was made by Michael England who did the album artwork and the special Warp newsletter on its release. For the video, he added animation to a live recording. His art has a magical-realism, Frida Kahlo feel about it. See his MySpace as well as Leila's for more. Leila's also has free downloads from time to time, one worth keeping an eye on.
Leila Arab, musician, producer, recording artist, moved to London after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. She started recording her own style of heavily IDM-influenced soul/ambient music for Richard D. James’ (aka Aphex Twin) Rephlex Records. She then met Björk and became a part of her live band, doing live remixing and playing keyboards. Leila has also recorded under the alias Grammatix (where she is credited as Aliel Bara) to record even more experimental and rare music, and Little Miss Specta, which is how she appears on Medulla (Discogs).

The Common Place in Leeds has had its club premises license withdrawn by the Council. Their aim is to create a place in the city centre in which together people can enjoy a sense of community, affordable entertainment and food; a non-commercial place to relax, talk, be creative, meet people and find information on political campaigns, issues and actions. It's a non-profit, inclusive, vital venue.

They are in the process of appealing against the decision, but in the meantime, the club is unable to hold licensed events (gigs, club-nights, films, plays) & they can't sell alcohol. As a result they have lost a significant proportion of their normal income and may face closure in the next few months. A fundraising CD has been put together to help fund the appeal and keep the club open in the interim. Details of how to order here
Common Place Fundraiser CD Review

A unique outfit run things at The Commonplace & this CD is testament to the diversity and artistry that emanates from the project. A collection of donated tracks from artists that not only support the cause but have also entertained audiences at the venue over the years. Highlights for me personally that stood out sonically when I got hold of this fundraising compilation were The Bacchae – Man A Nu-Rave, festival friendly track, grimey funked up bassline, catchy lead riff & luscious distortion on the hypnotic female vocal. The exclusive cut of Vessels – The Beast. An emotive piece that could be compared to tracks from Plaid/ Radiohead. Then you get Drei – In Floozie Pursuit a jazz/folk Georgian pimp trot if there was such a thing.

This album is worth a night in. Stocked with 23 tracks in total including Acoustic, Independent, Electronic and Experimental music. Its for a fantastic & very worthy cause. You would be hard pressed to find such a quality blend of new tunes and such a wide scope of genres from any mainstream release. So my advice is, hand in pocket, hand over a respectable amount of folding money. Run home, jump into dancing shoes stick on Track 19 (DJ Donna Summer – Oh Baby) with a large amount of volume. with a large amount of volume. & have it.
My Dad was a dude in the '50s. Sharp suits, drainpipe trousers, pointy shoes, turned up collars. Style. He always had great taste. He tended to lean towards intelligent, clever, cerebral things. He admired great literature and classic design. So it was an absolute joy for us to find this lone pop single in his stereogram.

Children - Keep Out! Dad's stereogram was a bit like this one, only he kept records in the glass cabinet, not booze.

Did he like it? Was it his favourite song? When did he buy it? We didn't dare ask because that would mean admitting we were handling his records, which we weren't allowed to do.

We'd wait till he was at work and Mum was busy, then we'd dive into the stereogram and start messing about. One of my favourite childhood memories is my brother playing 'A Teenager in Love' in superfast chipmunk speed, then at superslow Doctor Who monster speed.

I don't know if we still have the single in the house. The stereogram was replaced by a fancy hi-fi a long time ago; and of course we grew up and were busy with our own lives, never home to know what Dad did with his records. If we wrecked it, he never said.

'A Teenager in Love' is considered to be one of the greatest songs in Rock and Roll history. It was released in March 1959, going to #5 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #28 in the UK Singles Chart. A month earlier, Dion decided he couldn't afford the $36 cost of a flight to the next venue in the "Winter Dance Party" tour, with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. The plane crashed, but the tour continued, with Jimmy Clanton and Bobby Vee being added to the bill.

After my trip down memory lane with the latest My Morning Jacket album yesterday, I can't get this old song out of my head.

'Howzat' was one of the songs I loved hearing whenever it came on. I don't think many people remember it now. It features staggered harmonies, some blues and some disco in with the pop/rnb.

Look at the video! All those lovely blues and greens and shiny lights. Magic.

Through most of the 70s, Sherbet were the Kings of Pop in Australia, ruling the charts with a record-breaking sixteen consecutive Top 40 singles between 1971 and 1977. 'Howzat' was their big international hit in 1976, making them the first band to score an overseas hit with a song written, recorded and produced entirely in Australia. They were the first Australian band to reach $1M in record sales in Australia; the first Australian band to turn their merchandising into a huge industry; and they pioneered the concept of massive regional tours. In 1976, the book "Sherbet On Tour", by Christie Eliezer, sold 55,000 copies in its first week.

Ironically, their success came at a time when the press were predicting their demise and their founder member had quit the group.

Clive Shakespeare formed Sherbet in early 1969 with members drawn from three Sydney bands: Sam See from Clapham Junction, Laughlin from Sebastian Hardie Blues Band (the earlier blues/R&B incarnation of Mario Millo's progressive outfit Sebastian Hardie) and Shakespeare, Rae and Taylor from soul/funk outfit Downtown Roll Band, one of a number of Sydney bands who were performing Motown, Stax and James Brown material.

Between 1971 and 1978, Sherbet released 15 albums and 30 singles. In 1975, Sherbet's production was taken on by Richard Lush, ex Abbey Rd and engineer on many of The Beatles' later recordings, including the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band LP.

On the strength of 'Howzat', further overseas success might have been expected and was certainly worked towards, however a combination of factors conspired to prevent them. Later in the 70s, pop and disco had given way to punk and new wave. With pop falling out of fashion, and with its main appeal to a younger audience anyway, Sherbet didn't manage to gain a broader audience or break into the adult rock market. As happens with many a band, they were denied any record company support overseas, and back at home, the press were busy knocking them down.

Things started to look up in 1979. Whilst on their US tour, they found an ally in Andy Gibb who recommended them to his label, the Robert Stigwood Organisation, who signed them up. RSO, however, felt the name Sherbet didn't have the 'adult' image that was needed to promote them in the States, so the name was changed to Highway in 1979. Sadly, things didn't work out in America and the band broke up later that year.

I always liked the name Sherbet. Made me think of Sherbet Fountains. You were supposed to suck the sherbet up through the liquorice but I never managed it. Don't know what I was doing wrong.
Another quick album review. I won't waste your time.

What's it got? It's got the lot!

I came to this album with no expectations or any preconceived ideas. In fact, I was more focussed on other things and this was by-the-by. As the summer wore on, this has become one of the albums I most look forward to on my iPod.

YouTube - My Morning Jacket interviews, performances and 'making of' footage for 'Evil Urges' (6:38min)

It's not just the fun the guys are obviously having, it's how it makes me feel. For me, child of the 70s, the music takes me back to what I was hearing on my little transistor radio Dad gave me, enjoying my tunes when it was my turn on our Raleigh Chopper. It's all Charlie's Angels, Six Million Dollar Man and The Dukes of Hazzard. So it comes as a tiny little jolt to hear modern words in the lyrics, such as 'interweb' - Librarian. Pulls you out from your Life On Mars reveries somewhat.

"Simple little beauty"

I just had a quick look on the interweb for reviews and I'm quite disappointed to find no one really likes it. What a shame! I feel these people have done 'Evil Urges' a huge disservice. I hope I can set the record straight a little here.

Production is a little bit experimental. It's not what you'd expect. Over-produced here, unfinished there. For me, it all fits in with the 70s prog ethos. That and analogue radios and mono sound systems. We had it rough back then. All together, Evil Urges sounds like a 'real' record.

My top favourite track is Thank You Too! but I have to say, the whole album is a joy, beginning to end. Every track has something different to offer, someone else referenced and for me to try and identify. It keeps me busy when I'm stuck in traffic or waiting in a queue.

A few tracks can be heard on their MySpace
