OK, so after the last Nightmare Before Christmas, which saw the ATP parasite transfer to a larger host (Butlins) and was rife with interminable queueing, I wasn't sure what to expect at ATP Vs. The Fans. Reports from friends who had been to see the Dirty Three-curated weekend a few weeks before were promising, but I was delighted to see for myself that the queueing issue which had threatened to overshadow Nightmare was pretty much sorted. In fact I barely queued at all, and instead had to make do with standing next to groups of friends I didn't know while tutting and checking my watch.

Sure, Butlins Minehead still lacks the atmosphere of Camber Sands, but I really can't complain after enjoying Battles, The Books, Isis, Daniel Johnston, Notwist, Les Savy Fav, Shellac (twice!), Slint, Subtitle, Subtle and Why? all in one weekend. And those are just my favourites.

Subtle, Why? and Les Savy Fav were particular highlights for me and you can read more about them over on superproduct - plus check out the video of Why? and Doseone performing a bit of cLOUDDEAD! They're definitely not afraid of pleasing an audience.

Review 7 of 10
July/August 2006

The Death of Frequent Flyer
Chicago is killing em! The latest to affirm this belief is female heavy spitter Psalm One; a mildly toned lyricist who hits from all angles with the combination of punch lines, wit, honesty and versatility. Rapping since 98, she isnt an overnight success, and with her Rhymesayers debut The Death of Frequent Flyer (huh?) all the pieces are in place to make a big impact in 2006. Blessed with exceptionally buttery production, Psalm makes the best of something good with 14 tracks of head-nodding and thought-stimulating hip-hop. With a strong emphasis on the lyrics, tracks like The Nine stand out thanks to her talent for autobiographical storytelling, while Let Me Hear hits on the subtle dark tip, and Sworn Habit showcases the rawness and originality that bubble within. Each track seemingly fits into place with no bullshit fillers, making it obvious that this is an album from the heart.
An infectious album full of warm melodies with nods to Opera, Synth-pop and Jazz all underpinned by inventive beats.

BURIAL - 'Burial' (Hyperdub) CD
Burial carves out a sound which sends the dormant slinky syncopations of UK garage, via radio interference, into a padded cell of cushioned, muffled bass, passing through clouds of Poles dense crackle dub en route.

LIKE A STUNTMAN - 'Stan Places' (Highpoint Lowlife) CD Single/10" Vinyl EP
Like A Stuntman are four people from in and around Hamburg. They are strange but friendly people who make some queer electronic indie-rock noises. They are rather good at what they do.

HUMCRUSH - 'Hornswoggle' (Rune Grammofon) CD
2nd album from duo Thomas Strønen and Ståle Storløkken, now naming themselves after the title of their 2004 debut. This is an altogether more developed, varied and subtle collection of tracks, going from downright funky to abstract grooves.
