There’s something extremely formulaic about The Fray. This is said time and time again, generally in respect to sentimental “adult” contemporary artists such as Coldplay, John Mayer and Snow Patrol, to name a few. The most successful of these acts are those who get it right — they are able to create the same, or at least largely similar, sound on each album they release and are capable of moving as many copies of that album as its predecessor.

What’s the flaw to using the same approach on each record? I present an answer (somewhat): Each record is a mere sidestep as opposed to a step forward, making each record not particularly bad, but nothing to write home about. The Fray’s third release, “Scars & Stories” is definitely indicative of this.

Every one of the Fray’s huge singles, whether it be “How to Save a Life,” “You Found Me” or “Over My Head (Cable Car),” all utilize the same musical ploys: mellow piano, lead singer Isaac Slade’s oh-so-earnest voice of longing and tremendous, and hair-raising emotional build-ups. “Heartbeat” and “Run for Your Life” are clearly the results of The Fray’s finely-tuned, piano-rock tactics.

Singles aside, but still in the front of the mind, “Scars & Stories” operates just as similarly to the band’s previous records. The songs are mere offshoots of the singles. For example, take “The Fighter,” which follows “Heartbeat.” Its chorus chants, “Maybe we were meant to be lonely.” The yearning, love-hungry qualities are still thrown in your face. One can ideate rather quickly what the song’s meaning might entail.

Each song on “Scars & Stories” follows the same template: they’re all loud, accessible, sensitive and Fray-like in every way, shape and form.

The Fray’s plain style is not necessarily a bad thing. Music listeners more often than not have, at the very least, a miniature obsession with a Fray song. Its style is definitely luring, even if it seems more than spent after three albums. I do feel, however, that The Fray is a band that it’s good to take a break from, as eventually one’s definition of modern music will be completely warped.

Fonte originale by The Lantern

Scars and Stories è un CD nato “on the road”. How To Save a Life”.
The Fray "Scars & Stories"
Fonte : Indie eye
The FrayScars & Storiesthe frayindiealternative rock

Out now as an import, it streets here in the U.S. on January 10th. Instead of working on the album back in Ireland, they headed to Los Angeles & Malibu, CA for a totally different scenery, waking up each day to sunshine and warmth. With the exception of a few shows in Mexico with U2, they stayed off the road, off the stage and dedicated 18 months to the making of this record. A major change for this album was that Gary Lightbody did not go into the sessions with demos. As a matter of fact, maybe due to this, he did hit a writers block and started to panic. But soon enough, it all came together and they were off to making a super strong album. Watch three brand new songs done in our studio from Gary, Johnny McDaid and Nathan Connolly. Gary also sat down and chatted with us about the new album. Snow Patrol will be doing a live concert, part of the Live On Letterman series on Monday, January 9th.

Sun 5 Feb – A Day On The Green

The family-friendly wine/nostalgia-fest is back on the sun-dappled Sirromet grounds; as usual, the relaxed, semi-Bluesfest vibe hangs thick, with camping chairs and picnic blankets spreading as far as the eye can see.

Originally from Byron Bay, Glass Towers are a completely different act to the one that opened SITG 2009. Shorn of dreadlocks, the four-piece are a tight live unit – alas, their neo-post-punk stylings don’t appear to engage the predominantly 40-plus crowd.

‘80s stalwarts Icehouse have no such problems, generating massed cheers right from their opening number – “theme song” Icehouse. Tightly executed, staples We Can Get Together, Crazy and Hey Little Girl remain great Australian pop songs; touring band member Michael Paynter takes the soaring lead on Man Of Colours, with Iva Davies reprising the song’s distinctive oboe line. Power ballad Don’t Believe Anymore is given a crunchy rendition, but the biggest hit Electric Blue is a bit of a letdown as (a) Davies, albeit in fine voice, avoids the falsetto notes, and (b) co-writer John Oates doesn’t show up onstage. Nevertheless, the band have plenty of energy in them, rocking out on Walls and Can’t Help Myself and getting everyone up from their seats with the unofficial Australian anthem, Great Southern Land.

Philadelphia legends Hall & Oates similarly have no qualms about delivering a slick greatest-hits show – which they do and then some, dropping three of their most successful numbers – Maneater, Family Man and Out Of Touch – during the first 20 minutes. Looking fit at 65, Daryl Hall is still perhaps the greatest blue-eyed soul singer to walk the earth, while the ‘tache-less ‘second banana’ John Oates shines as the band’s musical director. Early hits She’s Gone and Sara Smile pack plenty of sweet Philly soul vocal harmonies, while calling card I Can’t Go For That morphs into an extended dance-a-thon – and there’s still room for #1s Rich Girl, Kiss On My List and Private Eyes. These dudes sure knew how to craft a killer hook – and sing it, too.

Rave magazine
