The Owls Are Not What They Seem

2011 was a busy year for me. I worked hard to get an artist visa to the US, preparing for a tour that might go on for as long as two years. At the same time I wrote and recorded a new album. Now that I’ve landed in my tour in the US it’s also time for my new album to land. "The Owls Are Not What They Seem" is a collection of 12 new songs.

Pre-orders are available here:
The Owls Are Not What They Seem

My musical journey started out in 2004 when I recorded Blue Moon and me and my musicians all gathered in a basement studio in Stockholm recording acoustically and almost all the instruments at the same time. After that I tried a more common way of recording in layers, adding instruments upon instruments. For my third album I hired a producer, Tobias Fröberg and for my fourth album Florida i experimented with a bigger soundscape with more drums than I had ever used before.

For "The Owls Are Not What They Seem" I went back to basics. After having done an acoustic solo tour for my album Florida Acoustic in 2010 I felt I was in my best element when I was playing and singing at the same time without the restrains of headphones and click-tracks. So I decided to make an ablum that was the essence of that me. Just something I could record in my bedroom without the pressure of a big production, time and opinions from others.

All the songs on "The Owls Are Not What They Seem" are recorded that way. Me - playing and singing at the same time, then sparsely adding other instruments to enhance and highlight where I thought it was needed. My goal was to keep it down and make an acoustic album with a live, organic feel to it. I had no interest in changing the world or inventing something new. I just wanted to make a beautiful acoustic album.

/Sofia Talvik
http://sofiatalvik.com
http://facebook.com/sofiatalvikmusic
http://twitter.com/sofiatalvik

More than the challenge of trying to see all the bands you want to see in any given night at the CMJ Music Marathon, we all went into tonight knowing we’d be dealing with the rain on this Wednesday night.

Starting out the night at The Bowery Ballroom to check out Motopony who were on the same early bill, where Viva Brother were headlining. These two bands are currently touring together as well. The Seattle, WA band put on a great set, highlighted by the intense stage presence of lead singer Daniel Blue. Their self-titled debut album is out now. Watch for them to hit the road with Company Of Thieves and any other shows by going to their website. This is a good time to plug Company Of Thieves if you’d like to check out their Last.fm Discover Summer Session right here. Motopony has also toured with the legend himself, Daniel Johnston! They’ve also done dates with another band who have done a session at our studio, Sam Roberts Band. See that session here. We realized if we were going to make it over to The Mercury Lounge to see the next show on our list, We’d have to leave soon. But first, a quick hello to the guys in Viva Brother, who also did a Discover session, and a chat with club manager Frank Bango. We walk out of the club, and luckily the rain is not too heavy. Off to The Mercury Lounge it is!

Read more: Night #2 At CMJ 2011: Motopony, We Were Promised Jetpacks & The Wombats Review & Photo Galleries HERE

Every city worth its chops as a center for the arts has its own music festival – Chicago has Lollapalooza and Pitchfork, Austin has Austin City Limits and SXSW, Los Angeles has Coachella and New York has CMJ. Each of these shows are reflective of the culture of the city, none more so than CMJ.

cmj is different from your standard music festival in that it’s not one big event in a single large area, but rather ton of small events that take place in venues all over the city. The experience is something distinctly “new york,” hopping from place to place seeing as many different shows as you can in a single night.

It can be exhausting, but the effort is well worth it because along the way you’re sure to see and experience many different parts of the city. New York is a city of exploration. With so many different types of people packed into a relatively small space, there is an infinite amount of places to discover. You never know what you’re going to find when travelling around the city, and so by checking out all these shows you’re bound to encounter interesting things – whether it’s the venue the band is playing at, the bar around the corner that you get a beer at afterward the show or maybe a store you stop at on the way there.

CMJ itself is reflective of this atmosphere of discovery. It is the premier event for seeing up and coming bands. Anyone who is trying to make it as a musician plays at CMJ. It is THE place to see bands before they blow up. Next year, many of the groups that you see playing in some packed tiny bar will be playing huge venues with thousands of people in attendance.

With hundreds of artists performing all over the city, it’s impossible to see everything. The best thing to do is take a look at the schedule and figure out a plan of attack.

To get you started we’ve got a track by rising Brooklyn pop star Class Actresswho played shows with the Carpark/Paw Tracks, Blue Flowers and Puma/SPIN showcases and one by Delicate Steve who played at the Stereogum/PopGun showcase and at DROM.

Grab a free song from Delicate Steve on MP3.com

Grab a free song from Class Actress from MP3.com

The entire week of CMJ MP3.com and Last.fm/discover were on the scene at tons of CMJ shows and posting tons of free music, photos, reviews & exclusive interviews. Dig deep and check out all of our coverage!

Read more: Spotlight: NYC’s CMJ Music Festival
