Remembering Freddie and George

Anyone who knows anything about The Home Guard knows just how high Queen and The Beatles are up our influence list. In the last couple of weeks, we've seen the 20th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's death and the 10th of George Harrison's passing. So, what better time to commemorate two of our all-time musical heroes?

First, we recorded a cover of Nevermore, an obscure album track from 1974's Queen II. Our version can be found here if you'd like to add it to your library, or you could just watch the vid:

Then we released our version of I Want to Tell You, one of George's tracks on Revolver. Again, our cover can be found here, or more conveniently here:

As you can tell, we've taken a few liberties with the instrumentation of both, but hopefully you like them all the same.

New music by Danish trumpet player and vocalist HC Erbs

Hello friends and music lovers.

l just wanted to recommend this album here: Don't Wear It Out by HC Erbs.

HC Erbs played trumpet on the Menn Ársins (12 Steps to the Liquor Store & Allt að gerast.

Don't Wear It Out is a great sounding album with melodic jazzy pop songs. Good songs and very well produced.

"The origin of this song, 12 Steps to the Liquor Store, goes back to 2005 when bassist Sigurdór Guðmundsson was writing material for upcoming projects. At that time the song had a different melody and no lyrics (and was called "Calm Mouse", see also: Calm Mouse (live). That version of the song was for instance performed by the Icelandic/Danish group Amalgam in 2005.

Fast forward 2 years and we have Menn Ársins preparing material for an upcoming album. Sigurdór throws this song into the suggestion pool and it gets a makeover from Haraldur Vignir, their keyboard player. New melody is written by him as well as the lyrics. The horn arrangement (originally inspired by one of Chris Speed's songs) is kept.

The rest of the band was skeptical that the song was anything that fitted for them. Nevertheless the song was practiced briefly before the band went into Lundgaard Studios in Denmark (November 2007) to lay down the basic tracks for the album.

When in Denmark, Sigurdór contacts his band mate from Amalgam, trumpet player Hans Christian Erbs (HC). HC comes to the studio and plays the trumpet parts and solos while the track is recorded.

Icelandic lyrics where tried but didn't work well, so the English version was finished.

On the last evening of their recording period in Lundgaard Studios the band gets a visit from three young danish jazz musicians (members of the Suntan Trio) that had just arrived to record at the other studio at Lundgaard. They ask if they can listen to some tracks. And while enjoying some fresh tracks and some Icelandic liquor they are asked by Menn Ársins to help with some background vocals and general party vibes on the track.

When working on the overdubs, back home in Iceland, the band calls in tenor saxophonist Steinar Sigurðarson to play the rest of the horn arrangement and add some solos.

Available on last.fm in late May 2008.
Released for airplay in Iceland, late May / early June 2008.

We fully appreciate that we’re hardly qualified to even think about improving one of the most famous songs ever written, so instead we’ve focused on recording our own take on it, changing as much as we could in the process. We’ve added a finger-picked guitar, a flute, a Mellotron, some percussion and backing vocals, while gone are the piano and drums (but for the kick).

Something else we appreciate is that it’s become almost fashionable to criticise the song’s lyrics – singing about “no countries”, “no religion”, “no possessions”, “a brotherhood of man”, etc. Some of the allegations we’ve read of racism, sexism, heresy, and even of advocating Communism are frankly laughable – of course, we’re in no position to speak for John, but what we find baffling is that a song about “sharing all the world”, “living life in peace”, and there being “nothing to kill or die for” could be focused on for so many negative reasons!

(Personally, I’m of the opinion that when he sang of “no countries” and “no religion”, John was saying, “Imagine that these traditionally divisive matters are no longer an issue and perhaps the world will be a better place”. Being the great songwriter that he was, he’d have realised pretty early on that that wouldn’t scan particularly well.)

Anyway, we hope you enjoy this cover version and the video/slideshow we created to go with it. It started out as little more than an exercise in finger-picking and grew very quickly into what you hear above. If you like it, please feel free to share it far and wide!
