My Favorite Albums of 2010:
1. Royal Hunt - X
Mark Boals surprises me yet again. Towards the beginning of the album he uses growling low vocals rather than the constant high screaming we're used to, and it sounds great.
2. Rage - Strings To A Web
How can a nearly 30 year old band sound so full and epic?
3. Alesana - The Emptiness
I am a sucker for concept albums, and this seems to take their already good post-hardcore/screamo sound and take it even further.
4. Crematory - Infinity
Never listened to them before but they have a decidedly epic sound. They call themselves Gothic Rock/Metal on their myspace, but this sounds more like Melodic Death/Doom, which I love.


Honorable Mentions (Great):
Dark Tranquillity - We Are The Void
I like it, but it doesn't feel fresh and original like their previous album.
HIM - Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice
I like it, but the songs tend to bleed together as they all sound similar.
Sigh - Scenes From Hell
I like that they are trying to expand the genre of black metal, but most of the time it comes off cheesy, like trumpets... why?



Good:
Freedom Call - Legend of the Shadowking
Love them, but I have to be honest, this is their worst album to date, with only 2 or 3 standout tracks.
True - Still Life
I could tell from the intro this album was going to be different. It's death metal, but there was a melodic acoustic intro more like you'd hear in power metal. Then the first track started up, and it went into a real heavy death part almost like grindcore. Just when I was about to give up and go to the next track, this acoustic flamenco-sounding guitar came in and brought a smile to my face. This genre definitely needs originality and I've found some here. Also, neat album cover...



Decent:
Alkaline Trio - This Addiction
After hearing the great punk title track/single, I was really excited for this album. It turned out to be a boring letdown, with the exception of the title track and "Eating Me Alive".
Blaze Bayley - Promise And Terror
Music is pretty good but very generic, and I just don't understand how people think he is anything better than a decent vocalist.
Greeley Estates - No Rain, No Rainbow
Nice heavy sound, nice title, but where's the originality here? (Hint - It isn't here, lol)
Orden Ogan - Easton Hope
Nothing new here, but it's a very solid power metal album and worth checking out for fans of the genre. Nice riffs and the choruses have er... choruses (many vocalists), which is pretty cool. Favorite is probably "All These Dark Years".
Troll - Neo-Satanic Supremacy
I found this album was really hard to get into... at my first skim through I hated every song. It is just so evil-sounding, foreboding, and intimidating. But I did listen to all of track 9, and it creeped into my soul a bit, and now I find I am liking the other tracks as well. I feel the best albums, in fact, are hard to get into and really "feel" at first listen. A grower album, so to speak. I can only hope this is one of them and will move up my list through the year.


Um, No...:
Dead Channel - Destroyer
They are a completely unknown band (703 plays on here), and for once I'd say for good reason. They just sound like they are trying sooo hard to combine hardcore, electronic sounds, and nu-metal... and it just doesn't work. I think this combination had a lot of potential, but it just wasn't pulled off well. But if the combination sounds appealing to you, definitely check them out.
The Decaying - Binary Assault
I got this because I was wondering what "Experimental Industrial Metal" was. Now I know, and I don't like it. If you might be interested, definitely check them out because no legitimate band deserves as few listeners as 18!
Unholy Archangel - Obsessed By War
With a band name so awesome, I expected something amazing... I could not have been more wrong. After a fake sounding MIDI flute intro, you are treated to a guitar riff so raw it's hard to distinguish that it is a riff and not just someone sharpening a pencil or something. Then the drums come in, and they are so sloppy, changing tempos constantly, followed by what sounds like a cross between grindcore vocals and a bear attacking a moose. I'd only say check this out if you are on some kind of shrooms and desire a really bad trip.
Wolfsmond - III
Very generic Black Metal. Quickly going through, really don't hear anything worthwhile here. Уходящий 2009 год ознаменовался выходом на российском лейбле BadMoodMan Music (подразделение Solitude Productions) второго полноформатного CD-релиза от московской группы The Morningside под названием «Moving Crosscurrent of Time». Коллектив продолжил линию своей атмосферной меланхоличной прогрессивной и дарк думовой металлической музыки. Творчество этой группы однозначно заинтриговало меня еще с предыдущего альбома «The Wind, The Trees And The Shadows Of The Past» 2007 года, а затем вскоре ознакомился и с новинкой, которая еще больше пришлась по душе. Я всегда относился очень скептично по части коллективов пост-советского пространства в большинстве стилей, но именно The Morningside является важным образцом качественной, очень насыщенной и красивой музыки для будущей не шибко разнообразной и все реже интригующей мировой метал-сцены. Творчество этого коллектива вобрало в себя очень интересные характерные черты – отчетливый протяжной скриминг, всё богатство прогрессивных и мелодичных гитарных льющихся проигрышей и соляков, тягучесть риффов, разнообразие игры ударных (различные сбивки на альтах, томе, бас-бочке – показуют весь диапазон красивой игры на ударных от до /), в том числе ритмики исполнения. Данная комбинация факторов у The Morningside является скорее редкой и проявляется в том, что можно местами и с натяжкой называть – смесь американцев Agalloch, итальянцев Novembre, французов The Old Dead Three и, конечно же, шведов Katatonia. Альбом «Moving Crosscurrent of Time» состоит из 7 довольно длинных композиций, в том числе уже привычных для морнингсайдов Intro и Outro – которые являются наиболее атмосферными в плане клавишной подложки, эффектов, которые придают эмбиентность и «заряжают». Таким образом, материал равномерно распределен, последующие композиции плавно перетекают в друг друга, нету проходных или скучных вещей. Более того – уже после первых прослушиваний пластинки ощущается хитовость всего материала. Сам же материал насыщен различными и часто сменяющимися эмоциональными настроями – и некая легкая радость, и тоска, и ностальгия. Лично для себя отметил как раз последнюю композицию Outro – действительно шедеврального уровня вещь по красоте и влитому чистому вокалу, которая попала в мой личный TOP-20 лучших хитов 2009 года. Эта же композиция была раньше замечена также в русско-язычной версии, но в альбом, к моему сожалению, не вошла. «Moving Crosscurrent of Time» чудесно оформлен – обложка и буклет с текстами песен облачены в милые пейзажи российской природы в различные сезоны года, а сам диск с красивой гравировкой «The Morningside» на считывающей стороне. Новый альбом этой группы обязателен к ознакомлению всем поклонникам вышеупомянутых стилей. Личная оценка 10/10.

Po wczorajszym lekkim niedosycie, dzisiaj postawili wyrazistą kropę nad 'i'.
Miało być dużo mrozu i dużo szatana. Mróz dopisywał przed wejściem, ale dopisał też na scenie. Intro z mourning sun i straight to the light na początek. Brzmienie jakby lepsze niż wczoraj. Ludzi jakby mniej. Aura dalej ta sama. Powtórzyli cztery kawałki - penetration, które zabrzmiało z jeszcze większą mocą, from the fire, moonchilda i mojego ulubieńca watchmana. Dopiero po nich zaczęła się jazda. Najpierw hipnotyzujące requiem i wyśmienite, zagrane na maksymalnych obrotach shine - pięknie światła lśniły w trakcie. Do tego na koniec trzecia cześć zoona i kończący set mourning sun. Wydawałoby sie, ze mógł to być koniec, ale światła się nie zapalały, wiec musieli wyjść. Najpierw love under will i to co musiało nastąpić po - last exit for the lost. Dziesiątki rąk w powietrzu i głośny śpiew, przy którym nawet Carl ożywił się i zachęcał do wyciągnięcia tych, którzy ręce trzymali w kieszeni. Pierwszy raz też przemówił na zakończenie. Mimo, że brzmienie pod koniec trochę się skwasiło, a czasem wręcz dudniało przy luw, to i tak całościowo wyśmienicie. Głos Sz.P.McCoya na żywo chrypi jeszcze lepiej niż w studiu, niepojęte ile musiał wypić by dojść do takiego stadium ;-)

Szkoda, że nie było żadnych okolicznościowych koszulek, zostaną tylko fragmenty w pamięci, na długo.

Z tych dwóch wieczorów mimo wszystko obstawiam, że lepszy był drugi. Przykro, bo przedkoncertowo na stówkę byłem przekonany, że lepszy będzie pierwszy :)

Sendot Sklin - The Black Mausoleum (3" CDr)

First label release of this Dutch project. Formed from the ashes of Granuloma Inguinale, Dennis of Sendot Sklin has scraped all those ashes together, and the rubble and the junk and the scraps, and has been melting them all together to shape sounds as fresh as they are rotten to their very core. The Black Mausoleum is comprised of a single, nearly 25-minute track that starts out as a cold, eerie drone that steadily yet uncontrollably wraps round and round itself to start dipping into atonality, distortion, and onwards and onwards, and the eerie drone develops into a full-blown eerie stream of noise, and it's blissful and divine and haunting, ghostly, unstoppable. Quite simply, a fucking masterpiece.

Female Harakiri - Chainsaw Majini (3" CDr)

The first in a new subseries on Hoarse dedicated entirely to Resident Evil themed harsh noise walls. Japanese hnw-unit Female Harakiri has recently started gaining some attention and praise, its excellent label debut Glorious Death on No Hotel having been described as "not HNW [but] HARSH NOISE WALLS". Chainsaw Majini is just along those lines; ultra harsh, ultra brutal, crumbling, a vicious wall of unforgiving crackle, its atmosphere perfectly fitting and amazingly evoking the grimness of Resident Evil 5, a dried out, saturated, murderous darkness. As the track unfolds, you can almost feel the anonymous chainsaw-bearer jamming the screaming teeth of his blood-stained weapon into your throat. Violent, sinister, nightmarish. Great.
