Live Report: Vader/Gorgoroth/Valkyrja/The Sickening @ The Underworld, London – 14th November 2011

4th November 2011 was the day when the tank PanzerVader666 once again bombarded everything in its way and, as they say, took no prisoners. The veteran death metal band left London leaving just the reek of death (…and alcohol). However, Vader was not the only band on the battlefield; Gorgoroth, the co-headliner, put on a bestial show and might have succeeded in resurrecting the devil, while the support Valkyrja and The Sickening gave the initial call for battle. As the show started earlier than scheduled, I have unfortunately missed The Sickening’s entire set (and their last on this tour) – also due to certain bus delays but that’s another story. However, from what I have heard they put on their best and most were pleased.

Live Report: Opeth @ 02 Academy Brixton, London, 13th November 2011

Opeth is a very talented and diverse band, and, in my opinion, genuinely deserves every bit of the popularity and success it has received over the years (and with that statement, it is obvious that this review is going to be mega-biased). Their latest album ‘Heritage’ has divided the fanbase significantly, even more so than previous releases and the tour to promote this album has also brought disappointment to some fans, due to the band’s decision to drop the death metal altogether and focus on their proggier side instead. Despite all the negative comments I read on the internet, I was confident that it was going to be an amazing show, regardless of the setlist.

Blogasek nie żyje, profil abattoir_blues jest od jakiegoś czasu zawieszony. Najpierw większe abatłablusowe projekty stały się ważniejsze od śmiesznych recenzji, a potem te większe projekty niemal całkowicie stłamsiło pięć kolokwiów na tydzień. Blogasek nie żyje.

Ale dzisiaj jestem pijany. I tak nie będę się już uczyć.

W ostatnim filmie Woody’ego Allena Owen Wilson spaceruje po nocnym mieście lekko podchmielony, w koszuli z podwiniętymi rękawami, z dłońmi schowanymi w kieszeniach. Reżyser zapomniał o słuchawkach w uszach, ale tak, to jest właśnie jeden z tych powodów, dla których ciągle powtarzam, że „O północy w Paryżu” to film o mnie.

Łapię się na tym, że ostatnio bardzo często słucham muzycznych nowości, będąc, jak to mawiają, pod dobrą datą. Nietrzeźwym będąc. Słuchałem tak nowego Waitsa, który wciągnął mnie na tyle, że zafundowałem sobie z nim prawie czterogodzinny alkoholowy zjazd wzdłuż całego Krakowa. Wróciłem przed ósmą rano. Słuchałem tak nowej Florence + the Machine. Spod Kopca Kościuszki dotarliśmy aż na Prokocim, ale Ceremonials w żaden sposób nie zdołała mnie poruszyć, co świadczy fatalnie albo o niej, albo o mojej ówczesnej kondycji. Dzisiaj słucham nowego Lyncha. I naprawdę się cieszę, że nie zabrałem się za niego na trzeźwo.

Fever Ray spotyka Davida Lyncha. Umawiają się, że Karin weźmie i pobruszy, a on zrobi wokale.

Nie miałem pojęcia, czego właściwie powinienem się po tej płycie spodziewać. Reżyserowi tym łatwiej było mnie zaskoczyć, chociaż prawda jest taka, że materiał na Crazy Clown Time nie różni się stylistycznie od tego, co można było usłyszeć na współtworzonym przez Lyncha albumie Dark Night Of The Soul (So Glad czy I Know właściwie kopiują klimat utworów z tamtej płyty). Nieziemsko przestrzenne brzmienie, gęsta atmosfera. Jednostajne (niestety zbyt mało różnorodne - największa wada longplaya) wokale przepuszczane każdorazowo przez vocodery, syntezatory mowy znane chociażby z Sheep Pink Floyd (patrz. Strange and Unproductive Thinking – Lord is my shepherd…?). Transowe rytmy przywodzące na myśl muzykę popularną sprzed kilku dziesięcioleci. Obojętna na wszystko perkusja, przerażająca wcale nie mniej niż ta w King Lupus brytyjskiej grupy Crippled Black Phoenix. Tu i tam (Noah's Ark, The Night Bell With Lightning) pojedyncze pomruki rozwibrowanej gitary. Zło, szaleńcy, wilkołaki i zagubiona autostrada.

Dzisiaj, może jutro, może w przyszły piątek – zanim wyjdziecie na domówkę, do klubu czy na czyjeś urodziny – zgrajcie Crazy Clown Time na swoje odtwarzacze. O trzeciej w nocy, kiedy już pożegnacie się z resztą imprezowiczów, zbiegając po schodach na zimną ulicę, włączcie sobie Pinky's Dream, przesycony erotyzmem i mrokiem duet z Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Przejdźcie się po mieście. Idźcie powoli, idźcie pustymi chodnikami (uważajcie na pijanych łobuzów!), idźcie tam, gdzie samochody nie zakłócają odbioru muzyki. Idźcie cichym miastem, idźcie wzdłuż ciemnych drzew. Słuchajcie nowego Lyncha. Jeśli macie odwagę.*

David Lynch - Crazy Clown Time [bez oceny]

Nie oceniam tej płyty, ponieważ:
a) jestem pijany
b) słucham rzeczy po raz pierwszy w życiu
c) i tak bym nie potrafił

* patos (estetyka) - polega na ukazywaniu zjawisk o charakterze monumentalnym i wzniosłym, o wysokich walorach uczuciowych powodujących stany napięcia emocjonalnego u odbiorców

Live Report: Anthrax, Testament, Death Angel @ Congress Theater, Chicago, USA – 15th October 2011

I recently caught Anthrax, Testament and Death Angel at the Congress Theater, Chicago (October 15th 2011) on the 1st leg of their US tour in support of their new album Worship Music – just released in September 2011.
The triple bill opened with thrash metal veterans Death Angel, known for their high energy shows since their days in front of Cliff Burton at Ruthie’s Inn. The band did not disappoint playing a set list that included fan favorites highlighted by, Evil Priest, a thrash metal classic from the 1987 album The Ultra Violence.

Release Review: Perversity – Ablaze

Perversity is a death metal band from Slovakia which has been grinding out extreme music for over 15 years. During this incredible span the group has managed to release just 4 albums: In the Garment of Lust (2003), Words like Poison (2004), Beyond the Reach of Heaven (2008), and Ablaze (2001). This is largely due to the constant lineup changes that have plagued the band since its formation in 1995. Currently, guitarist Jozer “Dodi” Kosc is the only original member of the group. The other members of the current lineup are: Kazatel – Vocals, Elvis – Guitar, Sly – Bass Guitar, Mystik – Drums.

Interview: Unmasking the Betrayer

For all those unfamiliar with “Unmasking the Betrayer”, they are a 5 piece Modern Death Metal act formed in late 2008 in
Athens (Greece). So far the band has supported giant Death(Core) act Heaven Shall Burn, as well as Caliban. Apart from that, “UTB” have also
released a self-financed EP in 2011, entitled, “Unmasking the Betrayer”. In my Honest opinion a SICK band, with truly genuine and new ideas, not to mention in-your-face heavy-as-fuck songs!

Live Report: Phoenix Rising Tour @ Stodoła, Warsaw, Poland – 21st October 2011

Fri 21 Oct – Phoenix Rising Tour 2011
The lights go off and one by one the band members enter the stage. First we can see Inferno behind his monstrous drum kit raising his drum sticks in the shape of an upside down cross. The following members to appear illuminated by the spotlights would be: Seth, Orion and finally Nergal. The crowd goes crazy. All you can hear in Club Stodoła is screams and “BEHEMOTH, BEHMOTH, BEHEMOTH, BEHEMOTH…!”. Even before the appearance of the band, the Warsaw crowd was pumping up the atmosphere with “get on the stage” (in a slightly more slang-ish and vulgar style), Christmas carols (don’t know where that came from), birthday songs and shout outs like “where’s the cross?!” (referring to the recent situation in Poland – read here). Nevertheless, Behemoth were not the only band to perform that night. Therefore, some patience before I go on examining the 20th anniversary show of the headliner.
