I think I've decided not to put these into any order. Also, I didn't want to flood the list with the same artists so I've limited it somewhat. (what? there's three FTRG releases here? shut up.)

If your release isn't here chances are the case is that I haven't heard it, you're already on there or you were overwhelmed by the competition :P

incredibly creepy-sounding; porn samples with experimental percussion. the result is an intense album to listen to!

Geprogrammeerde Celdood - NGC 4526 EP (this one also comes with the mini album "Glitch in the Organism")

really nice broken-core that doesn't just beat the shit out of you but utilises brilliant atmospherics too.
this man is the saviour of speedcore / bastard pop in my eyes.

very cool and varied idm-ish / breakcore-esque music. kicks the crap out of most artists in the genres I just mentioned

___dREàgänN|||||| - Spring Mechanical Bird
really exciting rhythmic noise - and other releases by this guy are definitely worth checking out too

someone made 8-bit music that's original, fun and interesting?! It's also "partially inspired by progressive rock, torch songs and vintage game soundtracks" - which might be why.
I took the quiz at http://www.politicalcompass.org and above are my results. Basically through questions with the options "Strongly Agree" "Agree" "Disagree" and "Strongly Disagree" it attempts to assess your political stance on a less linear scale than left/right. It can be inaccurate as there's no middle ground or "not sure".

It also compares your results with results of famous leaders (who were assessed by action). Mine was closest to the Dalai lama O.o

Right, I've decided to start reviewing CDs that come with Rock Sound magazine. They usually feature some pretty versatile stuff with often some bands who would otherwise be ignored. Although sometimes they feature crappy popular shit to appease the readership, but hey, different strokes.

The slipcase is a lovely pink this time round, so I'm happy, but I wish they'd stop doing that stupid "man listening to something" face on all of them, and do something new.

Anyway, yeah, the music.

-

Track 1: These Arms Are Snakes - Woolen Heirs

The CD starts with a disappointment, as I've heard alot about these and the song's nowhere near as good as I had been expecting. Further listening reveals it's ok - it's got a nice feel to it and I like the bass. But it still feels like it just passes just outside of consciousness - a step or two away from interesting, even when the vocals start being cut up and it turns into what's essentially a variation on the Doctor Who theme tune with guitars.

2. Satyricon - The Wolfpack

Awful, tepid, mid-paced pseudo-Ministry crap. Highly formulaic and boring. The vocals are half-arsed. Plus, it sounds exactly like their last album's title track. No surprises are in store here. It could have done with some black metal textures.

3. Bison B.C. - Slow Hand Of Death

Quite boring stoner-y stuff. The vocals are interestingly retched, but don't benefit by having what's basically gang-shouts behind them. Attracts attention by sounding jazzy for about 2 seconds and then reverts to exactly the same pretty tedious riffery. The tiny touches of cliché whammy'd single notes at the end of riffs just infuriated me.

4. Wetnurse - Life At Stake

Interesting intro until it starts sounding like a slightly discordant Metallica. The song then kicks in and it sounds better, but it reminds me too much of the earlier Satyricon song but at a decent pace, with some slightly more interesting, metallic riffs. Interestingly breaks down into an unusual, plucked and delayed, cleaner sound, but gives up and returns to the exact same sound as before.

5. Gods And Queens - Track 5

A nice sound that feels how I imagine stadium rock would sound if it felt like it was all shoegaze-y and cut up and put in random order. (It sounds better than you might think from that description...) Has some lovely moments of what feels like not-quite climaxes, but I can't decide whether it would be better to make them full-fledged climaxes or not.

6. Action Beat - Le Chap

For a band with an album called "The Noise Band From Bletchley" this is probably a rather apt sound: Bletchley is a dismal, grey place (in England) that probably only serves as a train link between London and Northampton; this song feels like a grey, instrumental version that's a link between Sonic Youth's "Stones" and the part with very few notes on "Kool Thing". Put basically, it's not even close to noise-rock. Still, for all of that, it's not too unpleasant - it has a decent quality to it that sometimes sounds good. I'm disappointed that their idea of noise is simply adding a touch of delay and reverb to guitars, although occasionally they add a touch of distortion which sounds good.

7. Attack! Attack! - <a title="Attack!
Think a cross between Kids In Glass Houses and Kids in Glass Houses. Yeah. I guess it has a touch of Lostprophets' more upbeat moments. But basically you take that and reduce the production values by about half, and you're there. If there's anything redeemable, it's the nice chord changes, but isn't that the same with most pop-punk bands anyway?

8. Jackson United - The Land Without Law

Here's some more lightweight punk, this time in the vein of Alkaline Trio's unsubtleties and Green Day's political moanings and bitchings; but with mariachi-eqsue guitars. No, I don't care how punk or Rancid it sounds, it's bad.

9. The Haunts - Underground

In terms of sounding interesting, this song's more like it, for sure. This is charming yet quite pompous goth-infused indie. The extremely english vocals can jar a touch, though, and that's coming from an english person who loves hearing english accents in songs! Quite alot of it sounds like a cliché hallowe'en-rock song, but somehow that makes me like it more, like watching a cartoon I haven't seen since childhood. I know it's bad, but I like it.

10. Upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start - Get to the Chopper

Ah, you can always rely on Rock Sound to provide one interesting post-rock or post-metal song per CD. I definitely like this one - it effortlessly drifts past generic post-rock and insteads like Red Sparowes doing a strange version of Faithless' "No Roots" album, except when it occasionally feels like a normal rock riff being repeated. The lighter guitars then come in and elevate the song and are rather lovely - think Explosions in the Sky with a bit more emphasis on groove provided by bass + drums. The pad that's introduced is awful, though, it doesn't fit with the song and it feels like it should be in background music to an old, unpopular robot-fighting PS2 game. Thankfully, it leaves and the drums have a great filter effect placed on them, although the EitS-like guitars keep being played backwards, which jars a touch. The drums being cut-up makes a nice ending.

11. Maps & Atlases - Witch

Dubbed a 'more abstract Foals', I certainly didn't expect it to sound like this... it feels like if Peter, bjorn and john jammed with some random indie band half the time, and the other half like Minus the Bear being led by Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals. I don't like it.

12. William Control - Strangers

Poor New Order/Depeche Mode ripoff (don't call it an homage) with poorer emo-style vocals, all by WiL Francis from Aiden. Was this made with ejay? This wanted a sexy feel, like Davey Havok (AFI)'s Blaqk Audio (which was an actually successful homage while being rightfully its own) but it got nowhere near. Undanceable and sexless, with an emotionless feel despite the lyrics.

13. Tortuga - Bury Me In You (Fatal)

Average-to-poor but with some off-kilter beat. Sounds like they can't decide whether they're screamo/hardcore or metal.

14. a textbook tragedy - Intimidator

Metalcore - the word with the biggest precursor to (justified?) small-minded judgement in music? Either way, these guys are alright - a nice abrasive approach that elevates them from sounding tepid and formulaic. Doesn't do much, but does it acceptably, and the melodic section sounded really good until they made it sound like From First to Last. I like From First to last but that just feels like an unfocused attempt at a more cohesive sound. Oh, but that jazzy section almost melted me - it should have been longer! That annoyed me - it just returned to where they were at the start of the song.

15. Viking Skull - Hair of the dog

If the name doesn't already say it all, this is the same old Orange Goblin-esque whisky-soaked rock nonsense that's far too popular. Poor songwriting lets this down immensely.

16. Stuck Mojo - 15 Minutes of Fame

...

Stone Sour vocals and lyrics, Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park) / Limp Bizkit raps, hard metal drumming, nu-metal guitar, symphonic elements... I'm confused and bewildered listening to it. It's beyond me what made someone put all these together. Nothing works with anything. It's unbelievably awful. An upsettingly disconcerting mess.

And that's all! Shame it had to end on that; Rock Sound usually put the more epic songs last!

First things first. This journal is -!!!NOT!!!- an insult to MCR or any of the other bands mentioned in here. It's a bit of an insult to The Daily Mail, but, overall, it's an insult to the silly little idiots who go around saying that a band can save their life.

Some of you may be aware of the relatively recent issue spawned from the music biz. Reporters in music magazines in England, such as Kerrang!, have reported a story in the dreadful right-wing newspaper, The Daily Mail. This story was entitled "Why no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo", which is quite self-explanatory as a title, and went on to blame "emo" bands "such as" My Chemical Romance, AFI and Hawthorne Heights for incidents ranging from mild depression, through self-harm and all the way to suicide.

This rightfully provoked many fans of the bands and the genre. Some explained in depth to their parents exactly why the article was wrong. Others were surrounded by yet more probably unwarranted despair by their family. Over 200 protested against the Daily Mail, in London, many carrying banners proclaiming "MCR SAVED OUR LIVES", and when interviewed many referred to MCR's lyrics, e.g. Famous Last Words' first line in the chorus: "I am not afraid to keep on living".

Since then I have been surrounded by people who, too, feel that My Chemical Romance, in some way or another, "saved their lives".

I am here to disprove this modern "phenomena".

See, while it's all well and good that the morons who write and read The Daily Mail are wrong and, as usual, misinformed, we're forgetting to deal with the other side, when the side in the right suddenly become the side in the wrong.

A person of any age may be liable to become depressed or suicidal for whatever reason. Some may be momentarily assuaged by lyrics they here, but none, I repeat, NONE, could ever make an ounce of difference to anyone's life unless someone happens to have written either a song that tells them their mother's cured of cancer, or somehow makes their dad not drink, or is somehow formulated sonically to cause a permanant, steady release of dopamine in the brain.

Even if lyrics could do that, for a start, MCR's would not. Many little fans (mostly around the ages of 12 to 14) are taking their lyrics and doing a wonderful little thing I like to call "positive selection". In this case, it's a fallacy. Take a look.

Let's use Famous Last Words first, here's the chorus:

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey, if you stay, I’ll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

Sounds quite hopeful, no? But then, let's take the lines before that:

So many
Bright lights been cast a shadow
But can I speak?
Well is it hard understanding
I’m incomplete
A life that’s so demanding
I get so weak
And all their souls are burning
I can’t speak

Hey! not only are these lyrics filled with despair, not one of the couplets fit together! It's a good old skill utilized by not only MCR but many other popular bands, such as Fall Out Boy as a major example. That's the thing. Even if lyrics could somehow heal, it would be impossible for MCR's to. If you look at it, really, MCR's lyrics would be the antithesis of this idea in most circumstances. Take Vampires Will Never Hurt You:

Can you take this spike?
Will it fill our hearts with thoughts of endless night time sky?
Can you take this spike?
Will it wash away this jet black feeling?

So, if these lyrics are coupled together to suggest anything surely it's somewhat suggesting that killing yourself is a way of ridding yourself of "black feelings"? I'm not saying it is, of course.

That chorus alone is a pretty good generalization of almost all of MCR's lyrics. I'm not saying they're good, or they're bad, but, hell, they're not positive.

There. MCR did not save your life, no matter how much you lead yourself to believe it. And, to end this journal, I'm going to include a wonderfully contrived statement from Gerard Way, also known as MCR's lead singer.

If we never play a show again, please, keep yourselves alive.

"I have noticed that a lot of people on this website seem a little ashamed of themselves and cultivate personas to hide behind - I won't mention names but there are those who variously act dangerous and sexy, rude and trollishly and finally so mere and expressionless you'd think they were ashamed to even have ideas or feelings at all. Let's change this, ok? Consider this the new journal meme. We'll bring in an era of honesty, starting with me. If you see someone acting in a tragic superficial way, let them know about my journal - I hope it will help them to be themselves instead. =)"

I hope to be one of many who partake in this great idea. Why is zanzanzawaveia always right, damnit? :P

Anyway...

Me

I'm 17, Male, from South-East England, and, despite being a teenager, I have no children. This could be attributed to the fact that I'm a virgin, or more likely that my type of sexual intercourse can't get me pregnant. I hope I've made my point evident there.

I'm agnostic but I find it more likely that God doesn't exist. Actually, I feel that everything is as equally likely as it is unlikely. I'm not spiritual at all, I tend more towards nihilism, and a lot of people find that difficult to understand in me. I find it nigh on impossible to believe in belief, let alone something like the soul or the spirit. I'm also very, very laissez-faire and liberal (although I get massively picky and annoyed whenever people mispronounce, use bad grammar or misspell), so I do have respect for those who are religious/spiritual. I have suspected asperger's syndrome, which, if it is real, has really helped me music-wise if nothing else. I find it completely impossible to hide my personality and who I am, as all my friends will testify, so chances are if I'm saying something on here I mean it (excluding sarcasm et cetera). I'm very self-conscious about my looks, but that could just be because I'm a gay teenage male. I have to wear glasses, which I hate, and I'm very rarely truly happy with my hair and what I'm wearing. I'm very skinny and apparently underweight, but I eat alot. I've been described on many occasions as a "twink", which is gay slang for "cute younger male", and I take it very much as a compliment.

Music, for me as a child, was rooted in the 80s due to 80s popular music being the only things my mum ever played to me as a kid. While I still have a soft spot for pop, I've found a deep hatred for most of the 80s, especially its metal (even if it did inspire the bands today). My favourite bands and artists are (to this date) Venetian Snares, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Led Zeppelin, Pixies, Sigur Ros, and, ashamedly, Fall Out Boy (but only their second album, which is a masterpiece in "guitar pop"). My recent loves are Johnny Foreigner, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Foals. I genuinely haven't found a genre or sub-genre that I haven't liked at least a little bit of, as of yet. Seriously. I can even like chinese traditional. I feel I can put it down to musicality and appreciation of it.

I hate the country I live in, and my favourite countries are Italy, Canada, France, Iceland, Japan and Sweden. I'm hoping to go, within the next 5 years or so, to the Italian countryside with my wonderful boyfriend, accompanied by my best (female) friend and her boyfriend, on a long trip, perhaps camping or something like that.

As I'm only 17, I can't really say much about myself. I don't have a job but I feel I would be suited to being a receptionist or a waiter. My life's goal, career-wise, is to be a respected musician and/or author. I'm hoping to take a course in creative writing at university, and I'm completely self-taught, musically, due to there being an immense lack of musical resources locally and in school(sixth form).

I guess that's it from me. Like zanzanzawaveia I hope this "meme" works and will inspire more honesty from our fellow Last.fm...ians.
