A powerful set of songs, spanning from Lycanthropy to his last effort, The Bachelor, mostly chosen among the singles, with the surprising exception of Paris, Patrick swept the stage with a rapturous performance, as the crowd's enthusiasm built up reaching an astonishing climax on Battle, until the joyful release of The Magic Position (introduced by the now usual Like A Virgin's improvisation, and, less obviously, closed with Che farò senza Euridice? improv in italian).

Now, this is what I would write about this concert in a classic reviewing mood. But this time, the night was special for different reasons than music alone. Patrick's talent both in music and stage performing remains unmarred - more than that, it's growing steadily with time. And yet there were two more surprising elements that really made me feel happy to be there, grateful to Patrick for the artist he is.

The first being his hinting to new music that apparently is inspiring him. He introduced Bluebells not with The Bluebell as in September at Milan's gig. He started with these words:

Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad
Sometimes I wish that life was never ending
But all good things, they say, never last
And love, it isn't love until it's past
Although I've been listening to Prince for a while now, I haven't listened to his Parade album yet. That's why I didn't recognize immediately a beautiful, heartbreaking song of his, Sometimes it Snows in April. It's great to know that Patrick is still exploring, keeping his eyes and ears wide open for inspiration from other artists, more or less contemporary of his. PJ Harvey's and Joni Mitchell's names popped up recently in his twits on Twitter, and he also covered songs of theirs (Patrick's rendition of Joni Mitchell's Willy at the piano is one of the most moving things heard from him). And now Prince: great news, I dare say!

On a different note, I noticed that the common theme of the songs was quite dark, recalling distinctly The Bachelor's overall darkness and the sense of an end that inhabits it (death, mourning, isolation) - paired up, for sure, to a wild want for change and freedom. That's the link that brings me to the second element that left me striken with awe.

Patrick's speech about homophobia and freedom to love and be ourselves was really something. It was simple, direct - it was apparent that he knew he was speaking to young people in their early twenties for the most part, and that's why his words may have sounded to someone like having a teenage-like naive character. Actually, everything he said showed his sincere care for what he stands for with his music. I admired him for taking a stance, still young himself but so brave: he made it clear that freedom and being true to ourselves is the most important thing, and that is exactly what his music is all about. Here's a transcript:

...I've been doing some interviews recently in Italy, for this concert and for my record, and time and time again the journalists brought up a question about, I guess recently, you know, with equal rights and homophobia within our counties. I've been asked, like, what is my opinion on the poor state of equal rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people here in Italy. I know this is gonna piss off a hell of a lot of you that aren't from that type of the community, but for all of you who are and are struggling, having shit everyday of your life since you were eleven and twelve, since you knew you were something different and you wanted to be yourselves: just be yourselves, and believe in live and let live, that we can be ourselves, and we don't wanna judge anyone else, we just wanna be ourselves when we walk down the street, when we kiss the person that we love. And we don't want no shit for that, that's the problem here. Pride is a big thing: take pride in yourselves, be yourselves, be happy, fuck the law, kiss and love whoever the fuck you want. And if some motherfucker ever tries to bring you down for that, then you come to me, okay? And I'll fucking be there for you, all right? With my music, and with my biggest heart, because nobody should be going through this shit, and no matter what the religion, no matter what the government, no matter what the president, no matter what the fucking Pope does! No matter what you believe in, you believe in yourselves and you believe in your heart, okay? This song is for all of you, and this is for all of you that don't understand just yet.
Then Battle started, and it was one of the most empowering things I've ever experienced. He inserted these lines in the song:

I had my moment with Patrick, that night. He came down the stage to the crowd, and stood on the fence to sing as near as he could to us. I was near enough to meet his gaze, and I found myself pronouncing the words "I got so sick of being told our identity was in minority" with him. He saw me: he smiled and, as he went on saying "don't worry, we've got some tribe, and we will have battle, and yes it's time, don't you know it's time, we'll get our victory", he held his hand to me, and I took his for some eternal, intense seconds. It wasn't the idea of touching an idol, an object of admiration that filled me with joy and will to fight; it was being able to really communicate one by one for a split second with a figure I trust, that made it to my heart. At the end of a blissfull night, I headed with my friends toward the exit gate, filled with gratitude and realization that music has the power to change everything, to make sense out of all the pain in our lives.

A couple of things that I recalled Patrick saying during his banters: he said that the first time he'd been in Italy he was 11 years old, as a choirboy, singing in Duomo (Milan's Duomo, I guess). Just a confirmation of what he said to me after the concert in Sesto al Reghena: I got it right the first time!
And then he also revealed that he wrote The Magic Position in Italy!

A setlist like the one above must be quite self-explanatory to a Patrick Wolf's fan. For those who are not (yet), I just can say that every single second of the concert was spectacular and stunning. Patrick was at his best: he opened the show singing in italian (he later explained to me that he used to sing that part of the aria from "Orpheus and Eurydice" as a 9-year-old choirboy, and felt it fit the setting). He sang and played with his violinist (also very good) for about 2 hours, radiating passion and beauty in perfect sympathy with the beautiful churchyard, glimmering in his golden make-up, sometimes so immersed in his singing that it seemed to be serenading his own soul to the moon, shining high over the clocktower.

The highlights of the show were a surprising rendition for piano and violin of Paris and a breathtaking rendition of Björk's Hyperballad.

Not only he's a great heir of Marc Almond's music: he's a unique artist in his own right, a young, brilliant musical mind and body that must be followed with ever growing attention.

Both were surprising - and I knew I'd be enchanted by the grace of Ane, but I wasn't expecting the amazing Nina to leave me so spellbound! She's a wicked fairy, really loved her set. It was also nice to see Nina backing Ane's singing. A truly special night, only marred by the place - seriously, guys, Atomic Cafe is cool, but it was even hard to breathe for how much it was packed with people and hot hot hot as hell. For fans' sake, choose roomier clubs next time, ladies.

Only Toph on the "stage" (a low wooden platform at the back of the bar lit by two round lightbulbs), with his guitar, his laptop and his amazing voice. The singing soared so high in the seabreeze, also thanks to a strange sail-shaped structure that covered a floored square nearby: it channeled his voice and let it echo beautifully. Toph was nice and playful, maybe a little nervous, but found the time to joke a bit about having rehearsed Man in the Mirror (why not give it a try!) and after his last song he played an encore unplugged sit at our table! A heart-breaking new song, which I think might be titled Kryptonite (though the lyrics didn't match those posted on his myspace). *Edit: that's actually Leader!

After the show I went to cheer him and made a request for the next gig I'm going to attend, in Bologna: New Hero, and he said that he'll try. Well done, Toph!

I can still recollect as if it were yesterday the distinct feeling of the paper sleeve of the LP under my fingers, the allure of his close-up picture on the cover, as well as how much I loved the song If You Let Me Stay. His voice left a trace in me that's still vivid today, but I hadn't listened to his music for years - apart from his year 2k lovely hit single O Divina - until I found out he was going to perform in Milan. Actually, I knew nothing about his marriage with an italian architect and his living there! I just admired his decision of going completely indie, although I completely lost track of the music he was producing.

Too bad there was just a bunch of guys who had real interest in him at the venue. Most people kept chatting loudly and totally overlooked the performance - lousy parvenus of good music!

But I had no hard time ignoring the rudeness of the crowd: Sananda Maitreya captured my heart from the very first song of his set. He looked as if he hadn't aged a year, his voice still perfectly capable of all kinds of vocalizing. But the biggest surprise was the new repertoire: a two-hour concert of all new material could be boring, if the music is not excellent. Well, it was! I loved every single song from his double album Angels & Vampyres, and now I'm looking forward to listening to his new project, Nigor Mortis. Highlight of the concert: a heart breaking solo piano version of Let Her Down Easy.

Well, apparently he has no plans whatsoever of going south - he seems caught in a teutonic fascination with Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Ok then: if Trouble Over Tokyo won't come to you, YOU will go to Trouble Over Tokyo! It's been some months of addiction to his second album, "Pyramides" - and also his first one, ""1000" (Limited Edition)" has started to grow heavily on me. When I found out he was going to perform at Poolbar Festival in Austria, I couldn't hold myself back - on my birthday, too!

I jumped on the car, fetched my dear friend Chiara on the way, and crossed swinging steep roads across the Alps to reach Feldkirch, where Poolbar takes place. When we got there, we first thought that it couldn't be the place: a nice little city, with just a few people around taking a walk or sitting outside bars for a drink. We had imagined troops of raving youngsters ready to party, or something along the lines. Instead, we ended up inside a small grey building that used to be a swimming pool. And the stage had been built right IN the empty pool! All the place was very cool, laid back but groovy at the same time. After one round of tequila and gin&tonic, we took position: first row, with our elbows right on the stage!

Opening act was Soap&Skin: I knew some songs of hers, and I was curious to hear how she sounded live. I have mixed feelings about her performance: I loved her piano playing, and no one could deny she's very intense. I guess she could use a bit more self-confidence, since she seemed scared as hell by the crowd! But, apart from the awful people at the end of the room who kept chatting and laughing all through her set, everybody cheered and applaused her a lot! She shouldn't worry so much, and ease up. Anyway, her piano playing is really good, and her voice unique (to give the idea, it could be described as a mixture of Nico and Shannon Wright's deep dark timbre, with Fiona Apple's rage and rawness). Her screams and howls halfway through the songs are chilling and shocking, as much as they give the idea of how passionate she is in performing.

Highlights of her set were the beautiful carillon-like Cry Wolf and the amazing rendition of Nico's Afraid.

When Toph came on stage with his band, I couldn't restrain the exultant joy that mounted up in me! I felt as a teenager in front of his music hero. The band was supercool, especially the chick that played the bass and the gorgerous guy that hit the drums like a machine gun (he also kept taking pics of us from the stage, nice!). And Toph is THE MAN. He seemed so enthusiastic to find such a devoted audience - even the girls who kept screaming like hell behind me (but I liked them anyway, they were so funny!): he said to them: "You're too greedy!", and we all laughed. Except for The Liar, which I prefer on the album, all the songs rocked even more live.

On Eyes Off Me, there was just Toph and his guitar on stage. He split the public in two and made each half sing a different harmony to accompany the song. He had such a huge response, that after he said goodbye all the people (including me) kept singing for minutes, asking for him to come back. He finally did, and improvised a reprise of the song before leaving for good. But we wanted more! I wish I could stay there after the gig, so I could maybe meet him and his band hanging around, but the trip back home was long enough. Anyway, as he finished I gestured to him to come near me (I was right at his feet level); he bent down to listen, and I managed to say: "Come to Italy next time!". Hope he will soon!
