Daylight Music - Piney Gir + Mara Carlyle + Herons! on 11 Feb 2012

Location: Union Chapel

FREE ENTRY midday - till 2.00pm

Daylight music is a dazzling idea presented by the Union Chapel to open up their amazing gothic venue to a shiny new daytime crowd and provide a rather exciting platform for artists. Produced by Arctic Circle and supported by The 405.

Piney Gir

Piney Gir joined her first band, a synth pop duo who released a single with Mute and toured Europe with Erasure. She saw the world and realised the road was in her blood, music was her sense of purpose and so she released her debut album Peakahokahoo on Truck Records in 2004.

Herons!

Herons! play a kind of literary alternative music that combines influences from punk, folk, classical, jazz and good old fashioned pop. Their debut album So Long! has just been released independently. Herons! are primarily Ben Kritikos, Anna Jacob, guitarist Tom Jacob and drummer James Dolman (from the amazoballs band Hermes) and clarinetist/singer/percussionist Aidan (from the hysteria-inducing Wallis Bird band); though they’re often joined on-stage and in studio by a panoply of talented friends. So Long! is available for download on Bandcamp, iTunes, CD Baby, Spotify and Amazon.

Daylight Music - Sunday Driver + My Glass World + Anja McCloskey on 18 Feb 2012

Location: Union Chapel

FREE ENTRY midday - till 2.00pm

Daylight Music is a dazzling idea presented by the Union Chapel to open up their amazing gothic venue to a shiny new daytime crowd and provide a rather exciting platform for artists. Produced by Arctic Circle and supported by The 405.

Sunday Driver

Anglo-Asian 7-piece Sunday Driver features vocals, sitar, tabla, guitar, harp, woodwinds, bass and drums. The band challenges generic, disposable pop and draw influences across a wide musical spectrum, from System of a Down to Judy Garland, Debussy to Ravi Shankar. Playing to audiences ranging from Asian melas and folk festivals to arts venues and Steampunk conventions, Sunday Driver's music brings diverse musical and cultural worlds together, incorporating British Raj and Victorian themes into their songs and live performance.

My Glass World

My Glass World is the crystallisation of a project that took a little while to come into being. It’s a new group comprising Jamie Telford and Dinah Beamish with songs by Jamie Telford and cello arrangements by Dinah Beamish. This is their debut performance, leading towards the release of their first album “Book One” on the Luxurynoise label this January 2012.

Anja McCloskey

Half-American, half-German and raised in Northern Germany, Anja McCloskey grew up listening to her grandfather playing the accordion, picking up the instrument herself at the age of 5. Having gained a raft of experience playing with avant-garde performance orchestra The Irrepressibles and folk-rock trailblazers Haunted Stereo, with whom she composed ‘Cross the Sea,’ a Q Magazine Track of the Day, Anja released her first solo EP ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ in 2010 on Sotones Records. This was followed by a US tour and single ‘And Her Head’ in 2011. Anja and her band are currently putting the finishing touches to their debut album.

Daylight Music - Second Language presents Piano Magic, Mark Fry & Áine O'Dwyer on 3 Mar 2012

Second Language is a new kind of record label dedicated to releasing the best in innovative contemporary music, cutting across international boundaries and genres from post-classical composition and electronic sound design to singer-songwriting, soundtrack music, plunderphonics and all stations in between.

Piano Magic

Despite a plethora of records released since their formation in 1996, you can be forgiven for never having heard of Piano Magic. This Anglo-French 5 piece group operate happily beneath the radar of the contemporary music industry. Though they've toured everywhere from Russia to Spain, Poland to Turkey, their audience is that rare breed - concerned with emotion, not hype; experimentation, not formulas. Indeed, the sonic trajectory of Piano Magic is dizzying. Their records have taken in Kraftwerkian electronica, baroque pop, visceral noise and an icy isolationism not rendered so convincingly since the demise of Joy Division. Their new album, 'Life Has Not Finished With Me Yet' is out on Second Language in early 2012.

Mark Fry

Mark Fry was born in 1952 into a family of artists and Quaker philanthropists that included the Bloomsbury group painter and critic Roger Fry. His father is the painter Anthony Fry. On leaving Dartington Hall School in 1970 he enrolled at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence where he studied under the Futurist Primo Conti.

During his Itailain sojourn, Mark recorded some of his own songs with a cabal of itinerant Scottish musicians. The resulting album, entitled Dreaming With Alice, was released by RCA Italy in 1971 and its reputation has grown inexorably ever since. It is now recognized as a seminal work of psychedelic folk.

Latterly based in Normandy, with an established career as a painter, Mark made a tentative return to music in 2007 with the album Shooting the Moon, and subsequently teamed up with Michael Tanner (Plinth) and Nick Palmer (Directorsound) to record a new record, I Lived In Trees, released by the Second Language label in 2011. A major critical success, the album's pastoral hues and reverie-like lyrics make it the logical follow-up to Dreaming With Alice, a mere thirty years later.

Áine O' Dwyer

Áine O' Dwyer is a musician currently based in London. As a young girl, she lived in the quiet Irish countryside where the hours were long, and as consequence, she grew up with a love of loosing herself in the world of sound and atmosphere making.
Áine has been a long standing member of United Bible studies, an Irish free folk improv collective and enjoys playing with several other groups locally and around the world. She has just recently finished an organ improv project, "Music for church cleaners", which will be released early in the new year by the newly established Irish tape label Fort Evil Fruit.

Daylight Music - Natural Causes + Laura J Martin + Lux Harmonium on 10 Mar 2012

Location: Union Chapel

Natural Causes

Playing with songs Geographically complicated. A full 11-a-side team in a quartet. Hugh Nankivell (midfield) mantels all keys. Rahsaan Chris Dowding (striker) on mutually inclusive trumpet and flugel horn. Pat Allison (left back) on borrowed guitar, bass, clarinet and occasional glockenspiel. Laura J Martin

Laura J Martin hails from the suburbs of Liverpool with influences that ricochet between Serge Gainsbourg, Wu Tang Clan, David Bowie and Herbie Mann. Armed with a flute ready for wrangling, mandolin and a loop station, she sings over her loops and beats, songs inspired by subject matter as disparate as Japanese folklore to real life sentiments and characters.

Lux Harmonium

Lux Harmonium is the musical moniker of Devon's Luke Jones. Initially a self-taught musician, he spent his formative years engrossed in antiquated records. Here he learnt the basis of his fingerpicking techniques, the more traditional side of his work. However the involvement of some unusual ideas about songwriting, creates a curious and timeless quality that is difficult to define.

An enduring insomniac, Luke's lyrics mainly take inspiration from the ethereal moments between this world and the other where he tends to spend most of his time.

The Felice Brothers + Craig Finn at Koko, London on 20 Mar 2012

Location: Koko

statement from the band:

To our European fans.

A few days ago our brother Ian became very ill with a painful rash on his face and head, he was admitted to a hospital in Berlin and diagnosed with Shingles, the doctors have strongly advised that he stay in the hospital for the rest of the week.

So, for Ian's health we have decided to postpone the remainder of our European tour. We were all so excited to play for our awesome fans on the other side of the Atlantic, and we can't really express how bummed we are by the whole situation.

Please find below the rescheduled 2012 UK and Irish dates. More news on the reschedule European dates very soon.

Thank you for understanding,

- The Felice Brothers

Tue 13-Mar London, UK MacBeth - SOLD OUT
Wed 14-Mar Birmingham, UK HMV Institute
Thu 15-Mar Dublin, IR The Academy
Fri 16-Mar Belfast, UK Spring & Airbrake
Sat 17-Mar Glasgow, UK ABC
Sun 18-Mar Manchester, UK Academy 2
Tue 20-Mar London, UK Koko - SOLD OUT

The Felice Brothers are: Ian Felice, James Felice, Christmas Clapton, Greg Farley, and David Turbeville.

Recognised for their live show, The Felice Brothers will play for their audience come hell or high water; the foremost example is their transcendent performance at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival, where they soldiered on, unplugged, in the rain, and barefoot in the mud after a lightning bolt shorted their stage’s power supply.

A.A. Bondy is actually the birth name (the initials stand for Auguste Arthur) of Scott Bondy, the former lead singer of Birmingham, AL’s Southern grunge darlings Verbena. After Verbena broke up in 2003, Bondy retreated to a Catskills home in Palenville in upstate New York and in time began writing songs again, emerging with a stripped-down indie folk sound.

Daylight Music - Arch Garrison + Directorsound + Citizen Helene on 24 Mar 2012

Location: Union Chapel

FREE ENTRY midday - till 2.00pm

Daylight music is a dazzling idea presented by the Union Chapel to open up their amazing gothic venue to a shiny new daytime crowd and provide a rather exciting platform for artists. Produced by Arctic Circle and supported by The 405.

Arch Garrison

There is a house by a river by a village by the foot of the South Wiltshire downs in which North Sea Radio Orchestra’s Craig and Sharron Fortnam live. A wheezing dog and a crackling fire were the backdrop to the creation of ‘King of the Down’, which was written, recorded and performed by Craig with additional vocals by Sharron, and features songs about the Mighty Thames, Roman Roads, ditches and mounds, vapour trails and mental un-health.

Fans of North Sea Radio Orchestra have come to expect beautiful melodies, quality arrangements and chord progressions that make your insides go funny. These elements are all in abundance in Arch Garrison but this is a much sparser sound, with Craig’s instantly recognisable nylon and steel string guitar playing combining with his trusty Philicorda organ, some synths and percussion providing the backdrop to his folk tales.

‘King of the Down’ is an album full of melodic, harmonic and lyrical invention that, along with his NSRO accomplishments and ongoing collaborations, shows Craig Fortnam to be one of the UK’s most original and distinctive talents.

Directorsound

"I started recording under the name Directorsound around 1999 in Colchester, as a 4-track project while studying literature there. Always an instrumental concern, Directorsound became my outlet for the ineffable, competing for my favour of expression with my studies. Illness moved me on from Essex, as it later would from London, until I settled in convalescence in my home village of West Moors, Dorset. By the end of 2001, as a 22 year old, I began my album on a borrowed quarter inch reel to reel. It became my only focus for the first 3 months of 2002. A nature of catharsis and a regaining confidence became involved in the work which was being constantly chopped and rearranged in the still void of my Dorset village. I closed off almost all other sources of music at this time, but would return to Dante, Mann and Miller, and watch films once night had stopped recording. Then on Easter Day I had completed this, my first offering, my Redemptive Strikes." Nick Palmer, Dorset, May 2003

Citizen Helene is a London-based singer, songwriter and guitarist from Dorset whose blend of sunshine pop, psychedelic folk and jazz has been described as ‘baroque and beautiful’ by Darian Sahanaja (the Brian Wilson Band).Taking influence from the matrons of 60’s folk pop, Helene has been likened to Margo Guryan, Karen Carpenter and Joni Mitchell with English sensibilities, combining plaintive acoustic guitar with lush Beach Boys harmonies. An independent artist, Helene released her debut EP, 'Citizen Helene' in 2011.

Daylight Music - Talk in Colour + Wilderthorn + Rome Pays Off on 31 Mar 2012

Location: Union Chapel

FREE ENTRY midday - till 2.00pm

Daylight music is a dazzling idea presented by the Union Chapel to open up their amazing gothic venue to a shiny new daytime crowd and provide a rather exciting platform for artists. Produced by Arctic Circle and supported by The 405.

Talk in Colour

By turns brooding, emotive and uplifting, slipping effortlessly between pure instrumentals and vocal driven tracks, London based quintet Talk In Colour's music defies easy categorisation. Together, the band blends electronic and organic instrumentation into a blistering aesthetic, drawing influences from Broadcast, Lamb, Battles, The XX, Berlin-era Bowie, Bonobo, early House and Hip-hop, with a nod to Afrobeat and Alice Coltrane along the way.

http://www.talkincolour.com/

Wilderthorn

Son of a travelling musician, Jon Bilbrough (a.k.a. Wilderthorn) grew up crawling around studio leads with a backdrop of guitars, African drums, Doumbeks & thumb pianos. He would later be no stranger to the stage, performing his earliest gigs in concert halls usually graced by Ravi-Shankar in India and in other parts of Asia.

Infused with 'Sufi-style' singing, tribal rhythms and hymn-like ballads Jon's performances are spiritual and emotive, drawing upon the vibrant colours and folk tales of his travels. He has toured the UK supporting Athlete and performed alongside the likes of St Vincent and My Brightest Diamond and is featured on Nitin Sawhney's forthcoming album 'The Last Days Of Meaning'.

Rome Pays Off

'Rome Pays Off' are an active diversion for Mark Beazley & Crawford Blair, two founding members of Rothko, the original bass-troika minimaldronewhathaveyou.

They have completed a record entitled 'There's No Simple Explanation', the record's sound is that of two stereo bass guitars, drone, piano and some very faint reaKtor arpeggio. Many of the tracks are simple duets that took just a little longer to record than they did to write. This does not mean however, that the record is improvised. For live performances they are joined by Chris Gowers who plays tabletop treated guitar, as he also likes to do in the bands Karina ESP and Signals.

My Autumn Empire

Under the name My Autumn Empire, epic45’s Ben Holton has been writing, recording and performing for almost a decade. Little recorded material surfaced prior to 2010′s The Village Compass, a collection of recordings made between 2005-2008 centered around the idea of life in a remote village. Far from being a dour, introspective record, the music conveys, in parts, a dreamlike state of self imposed isolation, while also dealing with loss on a personal and wider scale. The album was recorded in tandem with epic45′s May Your Heart Be The Map (2007), with Holton’s solo work sharing many of that record’s concerns and folk and dream-pop textures.

Holton is currently working on II, a radical departure from his previous work which is slated for release in Spring 2012.

EL Heath

Like a modern day romantic, EL Heath finds beauty all around him- in childhood memories; in the countryside around his Shropshire home; in early morning light and in dreams. It’s this beauty that provides inspiration for his music: he churns out song after song after song, barely finishing one track before he rushes onto the next. The world compels this man to make music.

And what music it is! It’s made using his vast arsenal of guitars, cheap synthesizers, toy instruments, circuit bent keyboards, field recordings and processed vocals and is always absolutely beautiful.

In lesser hands the kind of music Heath makes could meander along pleasantly, but he possesses that special talent of knowing exactly how to lift a piece to the next level- a subtle master of rhythm, melody and texture. We are extremely lucky to have him on our label.

P. Manasseh

Paul Manasseh is an experimental musician based in the West Midlands who’s set to release his second album ANA in early 2012 on Wayside and Woodland. Aside from his solo work, Manasseh also records and tours as part of the Staffordshire-based ambient pop experimentalists epic45 and more occasionally, dub outfit 4Series. In contrast, his solo work is often recorded in isolation, crafting minimalist compositions that are an exploration of the way we see and interpret the world, an attempt to create sonic systems based on visual patterns and structures.

Touchstones for P. Manasseh’s recent work include the arpeggioed soundscapes of Emeralds and Mountains and the minimalism of Elaine Radigue or Pauline Oliveros. ANA is his first release for Wayside and Woodland Recordings.

Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner & Nico Muhly on 9 Apr 2012

Location: Barbican Centre

"An exceptional collaboration from perhaps the three most defining creative minds from today’s New York's inspirational music scene.

With his The Age of Adz album tour this year, Sufjan Stevens once again confirmed his status as an inimitable singer-songwriter genius; Bryce Dessner delivered sell-out performances with The National and Nico Muhly brought us the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film The Reader as well as the recent Two Boys opera at ENO.

Presenting a unique song cycle for seven trombones and string quartet with vocals from Sufjan Stevens, the concert opens with a series of beguiling string quartets – most of them UK premieres; to continue with Stevens’ first live performance of the vocals for Bryce Dessner's brand new quartet 'Tenebrae', which he wrote for Kronos Quartet and performed at the Babrican's Reverberations weekend in May 2011.

Programme:

Nico Muhly Diacritical Marks
Sufjan Stevens Run rabbit run (selection)
Bryce Dessner Tenebrae
-
Muhly/Stevens/Dessner Song cycle for voice, string quartet and trombones (UK premiere)"

Last Tango in Berlin on 2 May 2012

Location: Union Chapel

Ute Lemper, one of the world’s great cabaret singers, celebrates the tango and the music of Astor Piazzolla, with some of his most dramatic and sensual songs about love, life, death, fatality, passion and survival in Buenos Aires. The destiny of these songs takes us on a journey through the dark alleys of Berlin, New York and Paris, drawing in evocative tangos from the pens of Kurt Weill and Jacques Brel.Ute Lemper

Launching the UK festival season each spring, London’s award winning Camden Crawl has become a calendar fixture renowned for showcasing the forthcoming year’s most hotly tipped live music artists to sell out audiences since its inception in 1995. In fact, over the years, each of the following artists played the festival when they were little known start ups launching their careers: Mogwai, Beth Orton, Snow Patrol, Hot Chip, Maximo Park, The Cribs, Mystery Jets, Plan B, Klaxons, Maccabees, Guillemots, Paolo Nutini, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Biffy Clyro, Foals, Friendly Fires, Kate Nash, Example, Frank Turner, Laura Marling, Professor Green, Florence & The Machine, Mumford & Sons, Kano, Noah & The Whale, , The XX, The Temper Trap, The Drums, Eliza Doolittle, Katy B, Maverick Sabre and the list goes on…

Now in its 11th year, the Crawl continues to act as a conduit for the best emerging artists to appear alongside surprise guests and seminal legends in front of die-hard music lovers, music industry and media under one umbrella. The event prides itself in making live music and the arts affordable and accessible to everyone and, equally, aims to grow community between the artists appearing, fans and the independent promoters behind the scenes. In order to do so, the Crawl maintains a policy to democratically book talent via a diverse committee of UK tastemakers and promote its artists on a level playing field. And, to further enhance exposure for performers and create unique value for punters, the ticket price includes a free download compilation album, magazine and programme guide featuring the talent appearing at the festival.

In 2007, the festival expanded across a weekend and has, by day, now become a sprawling multi faceted arts event featuring comedy & spoken word, film, pop quizzes, eclectic live music, crafts & art workshops, karaoke, exhibitions and more. By night, the two mile-long stretch of pavement assumes its annual position as an all out live music extravaganza playing host to more than 250 of the best new talents performing across the area’s infamous venues.

As always, tickets for the festival are exchanged for a wristband at the main entrance point allowing unlimited access to designated Crawl venues, outdoor arena, after show parties and daytime activities.
