1. Pythagoras (c. 570 - c. 495 BC). The ancient greeks were very serious about their music. For instance, they developed an advanced musical notation, some manuscripts even exist today. Pythagoras discovered the connection between math and music, and (the far out) concept of the music of the spheres.

2. Pope Gregory I (c. 540 - 12 March 604). The gregorian chant guy.

3. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750). Pivotal figure in classical music. Explored music.

Well, let's say you fell out of plane or whatever. You wake up, stranded on a desert island. All you managed to save is your most precious cd's and a speedo. Luckily you find a magic cd-player (impossible to break, no batteries needed, coconut opener etc).
So what music could you not live without, all those years waiting to be rescued? I'm sure you see it's a matter of grave importance. Anyway, here's my Desert Island Album picks:

1. Johann Sebastian Bach - Goldberg Variations - Glenn Gould - 1981. Bach brings clarity, calmness, consolidation and hope. Gould is taking care of business in his own, masterful way.

2. Pixies - Surfer Rosa & Come On Pilgrim - 1989. It's been with me for twenty years, and I would just miss this too much. Great for energy and morale, every song is a three minutes pep talk.

3. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - 1959. Mindblowing first time experience that got me hooked on jazz. I love every second of it. Easygoing and cool. Music doesn't get any better than this, imho. Good for lazy days on the beach and loney night by the campfire.

So, after just a couple of years you find, by pure luck, the next three albums on your list!

What a loss! But tonite, after watching a Alan Yentob documentary, I can appreciate the big picture. As his music well reflects, he quite possibly is the most innocent person alive, and most certainly one of the nicest. No doubt, he can play a important role in getting our religions aligned, hopefully including non-belivers.
