2010:..A Look Ahead to upcoming albums.

Another year begins, as we put a close to 2009. What is in store from the international music scene in the new year '10? I'm looking forward to music in the new year & here is why. We begin in Europe, & will proceed from there.

France, 2009 was a dead year to me....I follow 3 French pop acts, and none of the 3 returned to the scene in 2009. But things are looking up for '10, as 2 of those acts will return with new albums for sure. They are:

Alizée, the french pop starlet hasn't had a new album since 2007. Things have been very quiet with Alizee for sometime, after canceling her 2008 concert in Paris, Alizee seemed to vanish. I was beginning to think she was going to focus on her family for awhile. I guess 3 years in awhile enough! As word on the french scene is that Alizee was beginning recording during the 4Q of '09 & recently it was said she was doing a photo shoot for the album, or maybe first single..who knows...Its a strong belief the within the 2Q of '10 Alizee's new album should be ready. I can't wait to hear what the little french lolita has in store for us!

Clara Morgane, oh thank the French Gods! Clara is returning with another hot one! Clara has gone from Porn Star, to Calendar Girl, Lingerie Designer, to TV Hostess, to Singer. People love her, one of the few success stories ever to come from porno & be accepted among the general public. Clara Morgane returns in the 1Q of '10 with her sophomore album. Another hot, hip, steamy, sexy album from Paris's one & only Clara. The initial single 'il' first hit the scene in the summer of '09' & its been a long wait, but its almost over!

The Greeks are coming!!!! Finally! I think its going to be a great year on the Greek scene! With definite returns by Despina Vandi, Elli Kokkinou & Helena Paparizou all coming in '10! Despina & Elli both released individual tracks in mid '09, but both came to the end of their record deals, so caused delays in working on new material & deals. No need to worry any further both signed new deals in late 2009 & have promised their fans new albums in the new year! GREAT! Helena Paparizou was going to release a new Greek album in 2009, but plans changed. A few months ago she disclosed to her fanbase that the album will be her 2nd English Language album & will be released in the 2Q of '10. With these 3 Greeks returning with new albums I think its going to be a AMAZING year on the Greek scene!!

Out of the UK, comes the return of Rachel Stevens, who recently in a interview said, she was going to return to music in '10 for the first time in manyyyy years. This is good news, at least to me, as I always held her 2 solo albums in high regard a perfect slices of pop perfection! I can't wait to see & hear what this georgous brit babe as down the line for us, most likely more pop masterpieces! I've been waiting for Rachel to say she would return & here she comes!

Russian girlsssss (groups) galore!!!
In 2009 Serebro finally emerged with their debut album, what an amazing album that is. But even better news on the horizon in Serebro land. They expect to return in the 3Q/4Q of '10 with their 2nd album. Can they hold it together? Rumors have swirled around the lead singer thinking about splitting! I guess we will see how things play out in '10. We continue now to ВИА Гра (Via Gra), an adult pop girl group that has been around since 2000. Yet has gone through many, many, many personal changes, they've been 2, then 3, then one in, one out, new girl, new girl, one out, back to a duet, then three again, one out, one in & viola they are 3 again. The current 3 have been in place over '09 & released 2 tracks as a group. With no actual new full studio album since '06, the current trio FINALLY plan for a new album sometime in '10!! They've seemed to gel in '09. Fingers crossed! Keep it together babes!

This brings us to the Asian scene, where yearly releases are almost required by studios, but not always....sometimes releases hit so fast you don't know they are coming till just a few months before street date. So its tricky to know whats going on in J/K/C-pop. I'm looking forward to several known releases in '10. The first of which is Boa, she will release her new Japanese album 'Identity' in the 1Q of '10. BoA keeps her sound fresh & continues to evolve as an amazing artist on the scene now days. This is my first album of 2010 that I'm waiting for! 2nd comes from K-pop sensation 이효리 (Hyori Lee). Who has nearly completed her new album & informed fans to expect the album in Feb/Mar. Hyori been out of the game since '08, but that album (her 3rd) was her best yet & I think Hyori is one to watch she got everything it takes to just blow up big time, Korea already knows this...but this babe got major crossover potential in her future. Looking forward to her 4th album. My 3rd known release is from J-pop electro starlet 鈴木あみ (Ami Suzuki). Her music is like a drug to me. AVEX expects Ami's new album ready in the 2Q of '10. She has already release 2 hit singles in late 2009 & will release a 3rd single slated for Feb. Come on already (waiting patiently...well trying...) & finally the one & only Queen/Empress/Diva/Goddess, whatever you want to call her 浜崎あゆみ (Ayumi Hamasaki) will be back in '10. It was not till just recently that Ayu, as she is called, disclosed on her FaceBook blog, pictures of her & her band in the studio recording new material & a note in which she said "look, we are working on the new album"!!! I wouldn't expect this release until 3Q if not 4Q of '10...but something to look forward to. No doubt when it does hit, it most likely will be J-scene album of year in '10

& Last & Least, Thalia. Stepped out of the music spotlight to have & raise her baby, absolutely understandable & acceptable. Thalia has said her next album will be her 2nd English language album. English, Spanish, mix, whatever I've been waiting forever for it! IT is expected is '10 in the U.S. Thank god Thalia is around or the whole latino scene would be nearly dead with me, as only her & Shakira are artist I've followed & Shakira continues to disappoint me with her later english albums. Thalia has taken over her spot, IMO, but to finally have some new material to listen to, gracias!!!

2009, The year I discovered the Asian pop scene, in which J-pop, K-pop & C-pop, have broken into my music in a MAJOR way. So it is time for my 2009 awards for albums & artists of the year. Because the Asian scene had such a major effect on my music interest this year, it got its own awards.

安室奈美恵 (Namie Amuro) wins Asian scene album of the year with 'Past

Awards for: Euro/Russian Album of the Year & BEST Album of The Year (OVERALL)

This surprises me, giving both these awards Ані Лорак (Ani Lorak)! Ani was of "wow she's so hot, but her music albums are just so/so", that was until this years album 'Sun' , Ani's new album was a perfect 14/14 & just blew me away this year, it goes right up there with Laura Pausini's past albums as a freakin masterpiece of adult pop/rock! Every song is amazing. Noteworthy mentions & props go out to Serebro on the Russian scene for a perfect 11/11, & of course Namie Amuro 12/12 & Ayumi Hamasaki 14/14, but with those 3 interludes. All perfect albums, but 14/14 wins out.

Euro/Russian Artist of the Year & I'll give them Best Group of the Year to.

This is 'Винтаж (Vintage)' the are a pop/rock group from Russia, or are they Ukrainian? Whatever...they get my award for Artist of the Year, excluding Asia. They released their sophomore album 'SEX' this year, & while not as good as their 2007 debut album, its still damn near close to it. I discovered Vintage this year, and they have surpassed all but my absolute favorites of all time & I've only just discovered them this year! What a brilliant group this is!! LOVE'EM!

Artist of the Year, along with Asian Artist of the Year & lets throw in Best New Discovery, as this was my Asia Scene discovery year:

Here we have the big award, Artist of the Year. It is based on my overall scrobbles this year, and I take into consideration when I started scrobbling the nominees. My Asian scene discovery started with 浜崎あゆみ (Ayumi Hamasaki) & Namie Amuro at the same exact time. Therefore with Ayumi being scrobbled about 20% more than Namie, I give both these awards to her for this year. If you never heard of Ayumi, she is the Empress of the Asian Scene, from Japan, many may say Namie is slowly taking over this title on the J-Scene, but while I love Namie's sound & flow. Ayumi wins out this year.

Additional Awards worth a mention:

Domestic (U.S. Released) Album of the Year:

First let me explain, I don't really follow the domestic scene here. It was just by chance that this album crossed my path when xmas shopping at Borders. I never heard of Marie Digby & I don't buy a lot of domestic albums. Her new album 'Breathing Underwater' was on a featured display case. I gave it a quick sampling instore & loved what I heard, bought it & at home gave it my full attention. WOW was all I could say, it was absolutely breathtaking & beautiful. I looked her up here at last.fm & what you know shes Japanese/American! Go Figure!! If it was bad I would have traded it in, but hell no, this is amazing & gets my award for U.S. release of the Year!!

Greek Artist of the Year & Best Greek Album of the Year:

The Greek scene was pretty quite in 2009, as it seen no new releases by Despina Vandi, Elli Kokkinou, Helena Paparizou, Apostolia Zoi, Maria Iakavou, If any of those would've released a new album I'm sure Xryspa wouldn't have been awarded these honors. Xryspa, I discovered several years ago, but her albums have never been mind-blowin great, they've been just above average, enough good songs to keep around, but always falling short of their potential. & so goes her new album 'ΜΕΧΡΙ ΕΔΩ' 11 tracks, 5 great, 4 good, 2 beh. None the less here go your awards Xryspa!

Best New Artist, Best New Group & Best Debut Album of the Year

These awards go to Serebro. Serebro emerged on the Russian scene with a strong running in 2007's Eurovision Contest. Shortly thereafter they kinda disappeared from the public spotlight for over a year. Finally in 2009, Serebro showed themselves and dropped their debut album 'Opium' on the scene. Its a amazing album & they easily were my new artist of the year in '09. I loved this group, and scrobbled them with only 1 album, more than 63 other artists!! Even though the Asian scene was all new to me in '09 none of those top artist from the Asian scene were actually debut artist & so can't be considered for these awards.

'El Sexto Sentido' album score: A

My favorite Latina artist Thalia, to date El Sexto Sentido remains her best scored album in my reviews. I discovered Thalia due to her english crossover, as I was into hip-hop at the time & her working with Fat Joe, came across my path. Then later this album El Sexto Sentido really caught my attention due to Seduccion, how that video cannot catch a guys attention ^^. Gave the album a listen & fell in love with Thalia all over again. Her vocals are beautiful, I really do think she is one of the best singers around. Some amazing songs are on this album in track #1,2,8,12. Overall you can see I like the album until towards the end, 'Loca' never impressed me, nor Empezar De O, so they I've marked down a score point, they are not bad....bad would've scored them a 3, not a 4, but I normally 4 scored tracks are potential skips when listening to the album from beginning to end. The english 'You Know He Never Loved You' I like, but however the english versions of 'Seduction & A Dream for Two'...idk, I think the album could've done without them, the latino versions are better.

The group name means 'Vintage' in english, and the album title means: Criminal Love. I discovered Vintage this year before the release of the new album 'SEX' by coming across a video or two on youtube, fell in love with the sound, the girl (the singer), & her voice, and for several weeks a view or two on youtube was good enough. Then I heard of the 'SEX' album releasing & got it. (Which I have already reviewed)...after hearing that album & how good it was I decided to take a real look into Vintage & see what they are all about. Soon after... I had 'Criminal Love' & let me tell you, my readers, what an album! what an amazing debut! Have I ever scored a debut album perfect?...(goes looks a wmp....) oh, surprise, surprise I have twice actually...anyways back to the review. Nothing on this album disappoints me in the least, its all pure, with the electro sound russian modern pop is known for. Even the remix & interlude are perfectly placed. Its been along time since I've heard a group this good, I'm surprised how much I really like them, they have come out of nowhere to me & have sky rocketed above artists I've been listening to for years & years! Criminal Love is perfect, while the new SEX, is near perfect..

'3 Words' album score: A

Cheryl Cole from the UK mega sensation group Girls Aloud, ends up
the first to go solo. While the group is not by any means done (they still have a muilt-album contract). I always thought Cheryl probably had what it takes to make it solo. So here we are late 2009 & Cheryl drops this album. Its a very good pop album, but not perfect. It actually opens up kinda low key with the title track '3 Words' & that song while ok, really don't impress me. The next 3 tracks Parachute/Heaven/Fight for This Love are brilliant. Rain On Me tries to show a little power in Cheryl's vocals & it don't work. Cheryls strong suit is silky vocals & smooth pop. 2 attempts at somewhats of ballads on this album never hit home with me. Then we return to 3 more hit tracks in a row Make Me Cry/Happy Hour/Stand Up. Album wraps with the catchy & hookable Boy Like You before throwing on Will.I.am's 'Heartbreaker' from his album, Her presence on this track is minimal & I find it a waste of a track for her debut album. FYI Will'iam had a heavy influence on this album & he is found in several of the songs. I think too much to be honest....but in the end it works well with her style. Not too bad babe, not to bad.
