Pretty good, especially for a comeback. It'll probably trump this year's output of we-wish-we-were-Exodus Thrash "Revival" records.

Not as good as their first album, with the change in production being partially to blame.

Probably the best thing they've released since CTaWB.

Divine Eve - Vengeful and Obstinate EP
Underwhelming, but solid reformation EP. They recently got signed on to do a European tour with Incantation, so hopefully that'll get them a modicrum of the attention they oh-so-desperately deserved when they were active years ago.

Charred Walls Of The Damned - S/T
Complete garbage.
It had waves of potential but failed at almost every turn to stay away from being just another uninteresting, overly-cheesy, sterilely-produced modern Power Metal album.
Oh well. Back to my Pharaoh records...


Surprises so far:

Midlake - The Courage of Others
A friend of mine recommended that I listen to it if I enjoy 60's folk rock.
I do, so I checked this.
Now, from the vocal patterns right down to the style of "choral" layering, I actually hear more of the folkier side of Simon & Garfunkel than anything released by say Fairport Convention or Pentangle, but there's nothing wrong with that. In fact (to someone who spent many a misty preadolescent day humming "Scarborough Fair" and "The Sound of Silence), quite the opposite- I find it absolutely lovely.
The main criticisms I do have with this album are the fact that in it immediate track-to-track distinction is sometimes lacking, often the structures of the songs seem somewhat static, and the production is perhaps a little too polished than would be best-suited to this sort of style.
But regardless of that, "The Courage of Others" flat-out surprised me with the number of tasteful, moving and memorable moments sprinkled throughout it's 42 minute length, sometimes reminding me in a way, In Gowan Ring, sans the verbosity and experimentalism.
I'd recommend you check it out... that is, if the "indie" tag doesn't scare you too much.

Petrychor - Dryad
Three deeply powerful, supremely gorgeous, and absolutely jawdropping tracks from a band that came out of nowhere to blow the minds of anyone to cross it's aural path.
I fail to find the words that would do this justice any further, but believe me when I say that "Dryad" contains some of the best MUSIC, let alone Black Metal, I've heard in recent memory.

The King was afraid to lose Sogn to Magnus the
true kingsson.

Close to Christmas 1183
The Governor-filth demanded extra taxes to
Christmas celebrations for themselves and some
others.
The bloodbath was about to happen.

Led by Arntor from Kvåle together with Isak
Torgilsson and the sons of Arngeir the priest,
Gaute and Karlshead.

These brave men form Sogndal, Eide and
Kaupanger went against the governor-scum on
Christmas eve angry and full of hate.

The wiseapple Ivar Dape asked for peace
Arntor and his men proclaimed war.
But after the axe his head choppen off,
there wasn't much peace left in his chest.

Past midnight the killing of thieves, crocks,
servants and Ivar Dape was done.
The celebration of Christmas in Sogndal began.

(The Burial Mound of King Hydnes)

Farthest away in the powerful Norafjordr
From the god Nor's time
Farthest out in Lomeldi, inner Slind
In the last half of the fourth century there was
made a tomb for a windir (warrior) on King Hydnes burial
mound.

A coffin long as a man made out of stone that never
breaks.
In the coffin by his right hand side lay a
longsword,
a buckle of bronze held his cape.
By his feet two earthen vessels with supper.

Outside the coffin by the left gable-wall
two spears lay ready, the head turned westwards.
Everything for the journey.

But in the last century fear began,
ignorant men with lust for land
cleared 14 centuries with peace of mind
In 300 cords of stone.

Ignorant they were about the fear
that the god's rage created
The everlasting fear which still rules
In the far end of Slind even today.

There is a scary mood
A dark full of emotions.
Gods who can take from you what you need the
most
- a disposition.

Still many people has feared to travel between
Soknardalr and Leikvangir after dusk.
