Anais Mitchell Q&A and Album Preview on 15 Feb 2012

Location: Westminster Reference Library

*SOLD OUT*

If you missed out on tickets to this event, Anais Mitchell has just announced a full band show on Tuesday 29th May at The Lexington, London. Tickets available from www.wegottickets.com.

Anais Mitchell plays a very special solo acoustic show in the intimate reading room of The Westminster Reference Library, where she will be previewing songs from, and discussing the making of, her brand new album 'Young Man In America'.

'Young Man In America' is the follow-up to her critically beloved folk opera 'Hadestown', which received sensational reviews and landed Mitchell on numerous ‘Best of 2010’ lists in both the national and international press.

Switching gears, Mitchell returns here to a more traditional solo record, but those familiar with Hadestown will hear its overtones in Young Man. It’s an epic, sprawling tale with characters leaping from the verses as they would from the pages of a novel.

In keeping with this literary spirit, journalist and author Nick Coleman will interview Anais and invite questions from the audience. Coleman's upcoming book "The Train in the Night" - an account of his struggle with sudden hearing loss and a personal reflection on how we hear and feel music - will be published on February 2nd by Jonathan Cape.

Please note, there is limited, unreserved seating available on a first come, first served basis.

Daylight Music - Second Language presents Piano Magic, Mark Fry & Áine O'Dwyer on 3 Mar 2012

Location: Union Chapel

FREE ENTRY midday - till 2.00pm

Daylight music is a dazzling idea presented by the Union Chapel to open up their amazing gothic venue to a shiny new daytime crowd and provide a rather exciting platform for artists. Produced by Arctic Circle and supported by The 405.

Second Language is a new kind of record label dedicated to releasing the best in innovative contemporary music, cutting across international boundaries and genres from post-classical composition and electronic sound design to singer-songwriting, soundtrack music, plunderphonics and all stations in between.

Piano Magic

Despite a plethora of records released since their formation in 1996, you can be forgiven for never having heard of Piano Magic. This Anglo-French 5 piece group operate happily beneath the radar of the contemporary music industry. Though they've toured everywhere from Russia to Spain, Poland to Turkey, their audience is that rare breed - concerned with emotion, not hype; experimentation, not formulas. Indeed, the sonic trajectory of Piano Magic is dizzying. Their records have taken in Kraftwerkian electronica, baroque pop, visceral noise and an icy isolationism not rendered so convincingly since the demise of Joy Division. Their new album, 'Life Has Not Finished With Me Yet' is out on Second Language in early 2012.

Mark Fry

Mark Fry was born in 1952 into a family of artists and Quaker philanthropists that included the Bloomsbury group painter and critic Roger Fry. His father is the painter Anthony Fry. On leaving Dartington Hall School in 1970 he enrolled at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence where he studied under the Futurist Primo Conti.

During his Itailain sojourn, Mark recorded some of his own songs with a cabal of itinerant Scottish musicians. The resulting album, entitled Dreaming With Alice, was released by RCA Italy in 1971 and its reputation has grown inexorably ever since. It is now recognized as a seminal work of psychedelic folk.

Latterly based in Normandy, with an established career as a painter, Mark made a tentative return to music in 2007 with the album Shooting the Moon, and subsequently teamed up with Michael Tanner (Plinth) and Nick Palmer (Directorsound) to record a new record, I Lived In Trees, released by the Second Language label in 2011. A major critical success, the album's pastoral hues and reverie-like lyrics make it the logical follow-up to Dreaming With Alice, a mere thirty years later.

Áine O' Dwyer

Áine O' Dwyer is a musician currently based in London. As a young girl, she lived in the quiet Irish countryside where the hours were long, and as consequence, she grew up with a love of loosing herself in the world of sound and atmosphere making.
Áine has been a long standing member of United Bible studies, an Irish free folk improv collective and enjoys playing with several other groups locally and around the world. She has just recently finished an organ improv project, "Music for church cleaners", which will be released early in the new year by the newly established Irish tape label Fort Evil Fruit.

Los Campesinos! at Electric Ballroom, London on 22 Mar 2012

Location: Electric Ballroom

Follows the band's sellout March King's College show.

‘Hello Sadness’ is the fourth record by Los Campesinos!, and if 2009’s ‘Romance Is Boring’ marked a giant step on from their genesis – seven kids and a glockenspiel, ricocheting off the four walls of a Cardiff rehearsal room – ‘Hello Sadness’ constitutes another step, and a turn of the corner. These 10 tracks cover what we are coming to recognise as core Los Campesinos! concerns – love, loss, heartbreak, football (always football). But this is a record that’s wiser and more focused than its predecessors, confident in its abilities and clear in its aims.

“It feels like we’ve done all our growing up while in this band,” says vocalist Gareth Campesinos! “Not like we’re Hanson, or anything. But we’ve been Los Campesinos! since finishing university, and in that time we’ve all changed as people massively. That’s something we want to put across in the music.”

Gone is the hypertense, panic-attack rattle that characterised ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’, and the melancholy wallow that you heard in corners of ‘Romance Is Boring’ is in short supply. Play it more, though, and you hear an emotion that comes from somewhere softer, deeper, and – dare we say it – more authentic.

This show has a 14+ age restriction (under 16's must be accompanied by an adult), tickets are priced at £13.50 ang go on sale of Friday 18th November at 9am from the following links:

An Intimate Evening with The Unthanks on 25 Apr 2012

Location: Tabernacle

For the past 3 years, The Unthanks have toured as a ten piece troupe, bringing their peerless sound to the stage in full glory. During that time they have performed in the atmospheric surroundings of some of the UK’s finest cathedrals, concert halls and churches.

Following a recent collaboration with the massed ranks of national champions Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, the Mercury nominated Tynesiders now return to where they began, playing cosier venues, in the guise of their core quintet – the creative nucleus – for a more intimate and close-up musical and personal experience.

Fronted by sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, The Unthanks prefer to see folk as an ongoing unwritten history, rather than a style of music, drawing on a myriad of influences to story-tell in technicolour – from the minimalist eccentricity of Steve Reich, Antony & The Johnsons, Robert Wyatt and Miles Davis, to the singers of their Geordie native North East of England. The Unthanks prove that staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure need not be opposites.

Special guests will be Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell, who were such a hit on The Unthanks 2009 Here’s The Tender Coming tour. Jonny and Lucy will be performing songs from their debut album ‘Kite’, released Autumn 2011, described by Lauren Laverne as "absolutely gorgeous".
