THE PRESETS :: LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY (SEPT. 5, 2006) PARTS 3 & 4!

PART THREE

:: Sept 5 :: Live @ Virgin Union Square, New York City

When I walked through the doors of the Virgin Cafe, I officially achieved the Hat Trick. I've been waiting to catch The Presets live again ever since I said farewell to them at their Hollywood gig and their performance at Virgin marked the THIRD TIME I saw the duo live this year.

I got to the show early, but I had to take a "break" if you know what I mean and the Virgin Cafe didn't have facilities, so I darted across the street to relive myself and the line inside the men's room was super-long. So I ran back across to Virgin in the misty rain just in time to catch them amidst "Girl (You Chew My Mind Up)." I didn't dance or wiggle around as much as I had hoped I would mainly because the lighting in the cafe was too bright and I was more interested in hearing their sound and taking in the atmosphere. I didn't really do too much of a dance workout, so the pics from my camera phone are steady as a result.



The audience was into it, but it was free show so you had a mixed crowd of super-happy fans like me and others who were mainly partaking in the opportunity of a free live gig. The crowd was so random that a homeless man wandered in and literally rubbed up on Julian (since he's only a few feet from the exit doors leading out into the streets). The homeless guy obviously didn't know who The Presets were as he had a quizzical look on his pan, but as soon as he heard the dancey electronic music booming he was soon shakin' along anyway -- admittedly, causing a bit of a distraction for the crowd. Julian kept right on playing but he happily shook the guy's hand and hugged him when he kept patting for his attention. The man managed to millow about the audience for a while before security finally escorted him off the premises.

The sound of their show definitely evolved over the course of the three months after seeing them. The segues were much smoother and funkier. They did the usual Pet Shop Boys' "It's A Sin" and "Pleasure, rhythm, machine" start-offs for two of their tracks like the last shows, but they also added newer stylistic change-ups in the bridges of "Cookie" and "Girl and The Sea" (which was really hot and almost made me break out in dance, but not fully -- we'll get to that madness in Part 4 ;) They performed basically all the vocal tracks from "[album]Beams[/album]" except for "Bad Up Your Betterness" which they saved for their longer set that nite.



At the end of the show, they had an a meet-'n'-greet scheduled and I went up to Julian while he and Kim just concluded and said what's up. He leaned down toward me and in a Déjà vu-type voice, "I remember you!?" And I filled him in on the last occasion, which he finished with "Spaceland!" He thanked me for coming out and hoped I would be at their midnight show later on in Brooklyn. I told him, indeed I would. AND BOY, WAS THAT A SHOW.

All in all, it was a good precursor to the madness that would be Part 4! PART ONE

::: May 1 :: Live at Spaceland, Los Angeles

Just came back from The Presets' Midnite show in Silver Lake. Nice gig (same place I saw the Ark perform a while back). They performed all the tunes I loved from "Beams" plus many of the tracks from the "Blow Up" EP. My favorite of the nite had to be "Kitty In The Middle"... they threw in a little Pet Shop Boys' "It's A Sin" to spice it up. :) Introduced myself to both of them after their set. Both were very friendly and Julian shook my hand. Told them I loved their album. I'm such a damn groupie, sometimes. LOL. Oh, yeah, and my car didn't get towed or ticketed on the residential streets. :bliss: *dead*

::: May 2 :: Live at Check Yo' Ponytail! @ Safari Sam's, Hollywood

OK, part two took a little while to get here since my camera phone didn't want to upload photos for some reason, but I guess it was to my good fortune since I discovered some HIGH QUALITY alternatives already posted up from the nite I went. Big shoutout to THREAT DOT TV for all the HQ images -- really beats cell phone tech, eh? LOL! The show was great. It was held at a new venue in Hollywood called Safari Sam's and it was the grand opening of the Check Yo' Ponytail party. Free booze, free art, free gifts, free parking[!] what more could an Angeleno ask for... :) The set sounded better than last nite's -- the venue got it right this time. And my favorite this go 'round had to be "I Go Hard, I Go Home" that track *really* grew on me when I heard it live this time. We were pogo-ing like madmen in the crowd when that frenetic house beat kicked in! All in all, it was a great time. Lots of funnn. L.A. showed the two a lot of love. Julian recognized me from last nite and I wished him a safe journey to Australia. Modular rocked my world (thanks!) They must come backkkk sooon.

The Dancefloor Report ::: LATE APRIL / MAY 2006

Summer's almost here and things are definitely heating up in the dance and electronic realms. Lots of really hot, new albums and talent blooming. The buzz is centered around The Presets and their debut album "Beams." This Australian two-piece has been making noise for quite a while in the OZ underground and finally released their hotly anticipated debut Stateside this week to rave reviews. "Girl and The Sea" is the current single and is WORTH IT*! Currently they're touring North America with Ladytron all April and will do some headlining gigs in L.A. early May // Two hip hop infused albums are making noise as well, Spank Rock's debut "YoYoYoYoYo" just hit the crates with "Touch Me" and "Backyard Betty" tearing up parties (in my opinion, they pick up where N*E*R*D could not*!) and German-based Muallem's melodic "Shanti Dance (feat.
