Some years were obvious (The Queen is Dead trumps all '86 releases, fools), but '89 through '98 was really hard. I had Fugazi vs. The Cure vs. The B-52's vs. The Stone Roses vs. Nine Inch Nails in 1989. "The Blue Album" vs. The Downward Spiral in 1994, and the result is pure snap decision. Less Than Jake vs. Refused in '98 was another hard one. I've been making best-of lists since like 2004, and while We Shall All Be Healed, Searching for a Former Clarity, and Year Zero remained tops for me, 2006 was a tough decision. My original pick was The Mountain Goats' Get Lonely, but then I heard Camera Obscura's Lets Get Out of This Country, The Menzingers' A Lesson in the Abuse of Information Technology and Silversun Pickups' Carnavas. UGH. I think later in the year, as a sort of countdown to my best of music 2008 post, I'm going to write out a top 10 for '86-'07.

Provided I can scrape together enough chump change, though, I'd like to see a few concerts this summer. After scopin' out those Internets, I've found myself quite a few. Below's my wish list; each show comes with pros and cons.

4/28 Secret Machines @ North Star bar
Pros: Secret Machines are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. I haven't seen them since before they put out Ten Silver Drops, which happens to be my favorite SM album. Plus, word on the street is they're playing new material from an alleged third album. Also, I already bought a ticket to this, so I'm kind of locked in at this point.

Cons: Why bring opening acts when you could just play for 3 hours?

5/3 The Kills @ Johnny Brenda's
Pros: I've been digging their new record Midnight Boom quite a bit. Alison Mosshart was awesome in Discount, and I'd like to see her in a live setting, even if it's just via Kills. Plus, it's something to do while the Misses is in Canada.

Cons: I really don't see myself finding the money for a concert ticket this week. Plus, looking back at their catalogue, I find really only like the new album plus a handful of older tracks.

5/5 Flight of the Conchords and Eugene Mirman @ Tower Theater
Pros: Two of my favorite comedy acts on Cinco de Mustache.

Cons: It's sold out and I don't have a ticket.

5/8 Japanther @ Circle of Hope
Pros: Not only do I get see a band I've been curious about, but I get to support the easily frighted, never slighted Erin Szran, who booked the show.

Cons: There's like 27 other bands on the bill, and I've never heard of any of them. Also, Japanther seems to have a record of attracting dillweeds who get their shows shut down...

5/10 The Cure@ Wachovia Spectrum
Pros: I get to see one of my favorite bands of all time. This was originally supposed to go down in the fall, so by the time I actually see them, I'll have been waiting for this specific show for almost about a year.

Cons: They canceled the fall tour to work on new material. Also, the Spectrum sounds like ass.

5/17 Tiger Army @ the Troc
Pros: Finally get to see the best psychobilly band get all spooky. A publicist for opening act War Tapes might be getting my heterolifemate Eric and me in for free.

Cons: Free punk rock? Poss. dinner at Rangoon beforehand? C'mon. Unless they exclusively play the one TA record I don't have (the 3rd one), there's no way I won't love this.

5/22 X @ the TLA
Pros: I'm seeing one of the best original left coast punk bands for free with my best friend, Michelle K. Byrne.

Cons: What're the odds they'll play Ain't Love Grand? from start to finish?

5/24 Flaming Lips & RJD2 @ the Festival Pier
Pros: I want Wayne Coyne to roll all over me and then dress me up like a furry. Drew Lazor introduced me to RJD2 via Bruce Lee movies, and I maintain that is the best way to listen to Dead Ringer

Cons: Eh, it's a festival, which means a shit ton of drunk and/or high people. And haven't been that wild about the Lips or RJD2's last few albums.

5/30 Jeremy Enigk @ North Star Bar
Pros: The former Sunny Day Real Estate frontman has put out 2.5 awesome acoustic-y solo joints, and it'd be neat to experience such intimate tunes in an intimate setting. Plus, he's a friggin' legend.

Cons: Not sure if this show is gonna stir my feet, ya know? Plus, as much as I love Return of the Frog Queen, I'd still rather hear Diary.

5/31 H2O, Crime In Stereo, and more @ the Troc
Pros: Bridge Nine is getting me in for free. CiS had one of the best records of 2007 and I can already vouch for their solid live show. H2O played the first show I ever went to; I feel like I owe it to 'em to welcome them back to the music life.

Cons: Eric and I might eat at Rangoon before this one too. OH NOOOOOOOS.

...or H2O could play that "I Want I Want" song.

6/12 Death Cab for Cutie @ The Mann Center
Pros: It's been about 4 years since I last saw DCFC. I imagine they still know how to juice my jahones.

Cons: Rogue Wave is opening which sucks, and I've already seen DCFC live before. And there's plenty of people on this list that I haven't seen.

6/18 R.E.M. w/ Modest Mouse @ the Mann Center
Pros: Two alternative bands with truly, truly impeccable studio outputs.

Cons: I've seen/heard enough bootlegs to know R.E.M. is boring as fuck live, and Modest Mouse has let me down live before. Unless they play The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica , I imagine I'll still be disappointed, even though I did love their last record. Maybe if MM were in a headlining slot, I'd feel a lil more inclined towards this...

6/26 Ladytron @ TLA
Pros: One of my biggest concert regrets is not going to the Ladytron/CSS show from fall 2006. Would've been sweet, but this summer offers me a chance to catch both acts. Ladytron is up first and, given that their albums are so synthy/electronic, I don't see how this couldn't be a cool lil dance party.

Cons: I can't dance.

6/28 Devo and The Hold Steady @ the Festival Pier
Pros: I love Devo's early material. "Gates of Steel" is my jam! Plus, I can finally figure out my feelings about the Hold Steady once and for all.

Cons: Devo is pretty fucking old. THS could very easily suck.

7/30 RX Bandits and Portugal. The Man @ TLA
Pros: Portugal is super hot live. I haven't seen the Bandits in a while.

Cons: I just saw Portugal earlier this month. Live footage indicates that the Bandits are significantly more into jamming endlessly than they used to be, which means I prolly won't hear much Progress or Resignation material.

8/5 Bloc Party @ TLA
Pros: Bloc Party gives it their all live. Last time I saw them I got 2 encores, a good amount of rarities, the works.

Cons: Already seen 'em on a better bill with front row seats. Plus, that second album was really lame. Plus plus, a lot of BP fans are self-involved cunts. Not all of 'em, but enough to make me question this show.

8/7 Cansei de Ser Sexyand The Go! Team @ TLA
Pros: Dancepocalypse. Plus, I'm fairly certain Nate, Erin Szran, and Mandy will be there, which would rule.

Cons: CSS's record craps out half way through and the Go! Team's 2nd album was ho-hum. Not sure if all that instrumentation will shine through live too.

8/10 Rancid w/ Big D and the Kids Table@ the Electric Factory
Pros: It's motherfucking Rancid with the D. If I go, I'll get a chance to meet Michelle's other lover, Irma.

Cons: Between Big D personally attacking me over dumping on their remix album on punknews.org (Seriously? The one time I don't like a D record...!) and Springman Records' no-showing on that D vinyl I ordered back in January (expect pain), I suspect I may need to break up with one of my favorite bands.

Oh, and Lars could always have a seizure, or something. Or they could play "Vampire Girl" for 2 hours, which actually sounds more like a pro.

8/29 Nine Inch Nails @ the Wachovia Center
Pros: I finally get to see NIN with Michelle. So romantic! Year Zero was so fucking awesome too...

Bob Dylan... he's one of those artists so ingrained in our culture that I can't really cite any one source for drawing me to him. I suppose my active attempt to enjoy him came when I bought "Greatest Hits Volume One," which is a ridiculously brilliant collection even though it barely taps into his work.

2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
"My Bedroom is Like for Artists, Part 2." Latterman's "No Matter Where We Go..." was an impulse buy. I needed something to make me feel better about how shitty my life was feeling at the time, and the album cover of two dudes high-fiving in mid-air looked mighty fine.

AFI. 9. Still need to get "The Art of Drowning." Can't wait for the new EP.

4. What is your favorite song by 15?
PJ Harvey. Oh geez... Either "Legs" or "Send His Love to Me."

8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Getting the new Loved Onesfrom fat wreck early and driving all over philadelphia and blue bell with it. It's a great driving record.

These questions are repetitive. The live version of the Early November's "Ever So Sweet" from the I Am the Avalanche split will always make me smile because Maria and I were there when it was recorded.

Guster. Twice. Both times at Penn's Landing.

Green Day. Definitely "Basket Case." I was obsessed with that song in 1994.

The Mountain Goats wrote a lot of very good songs. Um... "Jenny," "This Year," "If You See the Light," "The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" are all nice to hear.

Every time I buy another Cursive album, it changes me on a chemical level. Every record has its own identity, even thought Tim Kasher's lyrics have always maintained the same voice.

My favorite Against Me! album is constantly in flux. After a long love affair with "New Wave," "Eternal Cowboy" is starting to finally take top honors. But then again, "Searching for a Former Clarity" and "Reinventing Axl Rose" are fucking genius. So basically... all of them.

"In between Days," "Lovesong," "Out of This World," "Just Like Heaven," "Love Cats," and many more by The Cure.

Bruce Springseen. "Atlantic City" is still the peak. He's interpreted this song so many different ways, and they're all amazing (minus the bluegrass version from the "Live in Dublin" record, which blows).

The Lawrence Arms, the opening track to "Greatest Story Ever Told," but only because it's not a full song.

“I love me some Philly,” Kimya Dawson wrote in a MySpace bulletin Jan. 16. She wasn’t kidding; as part of a promotional tour for the Juno soundtrack, Dawson booked two Philadelphia shows for Saturday, Jan. 19. The first show, originally scheduled for the First Unitarian Church and moved to Rittenhouse Square, was an afternoon affair with Karl Blau and Angelo Spencer. I’d like to write about it, but tickets sold out. The second show, a free event held at A.K.A. Music, boasted around 45 minutes of old and new songs from Dawson. Thank goodness she enjoys this area so gosh dang much, because I managed to get into the second show.

Soft-spoken and visibly exhausted, Dawson took out an acoustic guitar (or so I assume. A.K.A. doesn’t really have a “stage,” rendering Dawson invisible behind a thick mass of bespectacled youths) and began her set with “Tire Swing,” one of her tunes featured on the Juno soundtrack. Soon after, fans in the cramped, hot space of A.K.A.’s upstairs area sat down jigsaw style, with legs bending however which way the space allowed. Good thing I played so much Tetris as a kid.

Once everyone settled down, Dawson emerged into view. Short and awkward, it’s almost hard to believe she’s the author behind abrasive, badass lines like “F--- Bush and f--- this war” and “You said, ‘You’re gross my darling’/I said, ‘No I’m rock and roll.’” Indeed, Dawson was at her most casual when singing. Perhaps a mix of traveling, having a baby and social anxiety made conversation a little difficult.

Luckily, songs like “The Beer” and “Underground” spoke for her. Gentle guitar lines stayed low under Dawson’s voice. The middle of her set included several songs she had been working on for a record of babies’ songs. The most touching of the bunch was a tune she wrote for her own child, Panda. Short and simple, the ditties proved to be just as entertaining for teens and adults as they will for infants.

Dawson eventually found her voice by the end of the set. She related the story of how the Juno tour came about. At one point, it was proposed she do a series of Virgin Megastore performances – something Dawson abhorred. This stance segued into a discussion of how it was important to support local record stores over corporate chains. Best Buy’s lower prices come with a heavier cost than one might realize. Additionally, Dawson held that smaller stores generally have more character, that one could build a relationship with an independent store clerk.

“Sometimes music clerks are just pricks,” she admitted, “But it still beats pricks who work at Borders.”

While the heat nearly got to Dawson, exhausted and sweating beneath her mighty afro, and almost knocked out one fan, the show followed through wonderfully. After concluding with “Loose Lips,” also showcased on Juno, Dawson bowed out to applause. After two shows, she seemed pooped, but not too tired to give fans a few hugs.
