On an average Tuesday in Amsterdam 2,055 bikes get stolen. This happened last Tuesday, and this will happen next Tuesday. What is different though on 21 October, is that the prolific Santa Monica producer and Ninja Tune progeny Daedelus will perform at SMART Project Space on the first Viral Radio event since the festival in June, at the Bimhuis and 11. Daedelus - real name Alfred Darlington - was so cordial to answer a few questions and give a top 11 of his current favourites.

Juha van 't Zelfde What do you think of the current crisis on Wall Street? Does this affect your work as a musician?

Daedelus The current crisis will have concequenses, but they may be strangely good: people always become more passionate about music during a recession; sales actually tend to increase. Also there is no retirement plan for musicians like myself so sadly no problem!

JZ What are your thoughts on the political campaigns of Democrats and Republicans? Would you write a song for either party?

D Haha! I did! It was very well recieved, check it out on Youtube under Obama Way so you can guess who I am voting for...

JZ If we would look at your music with Darwinian eyes, what makes it survive?

D Good will and constant evolution (the Darwinian answer); sitting still will get you eaten by another, always better to tell the story of moving on.

JZ Are you feeling a global power shift from West to East?

D Yes in fact, touring recently in China really opened my eyes to the changes underfoot. America is so difficult for culture, perhaps a wake up call is in order. All the US does is think of ideas. Perhaps we should reward these inovations.

JZ What can we expect from your Amsterdam show?

D It all depends on what you bring: want to party and we'll party, want to cry and we'll cry together. I think the same can be said from Daddy Kev except he is bring firepower! Maybe I'll try so too.

JZ Thank you.

D Thank you, and best until!

For the third year in a row, the Amsterdam Dance Event has invited the Bimhuis to participate in its citywide festival in last week of October. Originally grown out a desire to create a meeting point for the international dance music scene, the festival has become a power player in the professional dance industry.

The Bimhuis, club nor dance music promoter, took the challenge of creating a programme befitting the context. Last year it did so by inviting post-jungle producers as Ollie Bown,Badun and Vektormusik, and abstract machine music makers Alog, Pierre Bastien and Machinefabriek. This year it will take the same route: on one side there will be beat-driven musicians from various domains (abstract hip hop, improv and bossa nova); on the other side there will be solo artists creating subtle works with cello, French horn, environmental sounds and saxophone. All make use of various electronic devices.

Hildur Gudnadóttir

Although the programme has not been fully realised yet, the first names that have been announced are Hild Sofie Tafjord (NO), BJ Nilsen (SWE), Hildur Gudnadóttir (ICE), Humcrush (NO), and Sidsel Endresen (NO). There will also be second installment of Beat Dimensions, after the successful first edition with Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke. Other names will be announced when confirmed.

The Amsterdam Dance Event will take place 23-25 October.

Cassetteboy are childhood friends Michael Bollen and Steve Warlin. Until now they have remained anonymous, fearing lawsuits for massive copyright infringement. With their third album, they have somewhat unwisely decided to publicly admit their crimes.

Carry on Breathing tells the story of life itself, from birth to death, through the medium of bits of Eastenders, nicked northern soul loops and knob gags.

Michael: We’re following the traditional rock and roll career path. We accidentally made a classic debut album, before we knew what we were doing (The parker tapes, 2002), then we sold out and went ‹pop› (Dead Horse, 2005), and now we’re back with a slightly bloated concept album.

Steve: Carry on Breathing covers all the big themes: money, love, death and, er, Croydon Council.

Michael: This album is our most ambitious work to date. We’ve collected so much more material than we ever have done before, weeks and weeks of TV and radio.

Steve: Bit Torrent and youtube have opened up whole new worlds of raw material for us. But of course we’d never infringe any copyright.

Michael: No, never. This is definitely our best album though. It’s hard to know how we’ll top it. In fact we’ll probably just split up after this one.

Steve: We say that after every album.

Michael: Yeah. Carry on Breathing is good though. I don’t think anyone will have heard anything quite like it before.

Steve: Unless they’ve heard our other albums.

Michael: If there’s any justice in the world, we’ll win the Mercury Music Prize.

Steve: We’re not going to win the Mercury Music Prize.

Michael: I know.

Carry on Breathing is released on the same day as Michael’s debut novel, Earth Inc. (Picnic Publishing). Stephen Merchant (The Office) has described Earth Inc. as «reminiscent of Douglas Adams…the funniest work of fiction since The Bible.» You can read extracts here: (web address)

Michael: Earth Inc. is silly, satirical and a bit scatological, a combination that will be familiar to fans of Cassetteboy. The main difference between doing Cassetteboy and writing a novel is that, when you are writing a book, if you want to use the word ‹tangerine›, you just write it down. You don’t have to wait until you happen to record someone on Watchdog saying ‹tangerine› clearly and in the right tone of voice.

In honor of their new album, Cassetteboy will perform live at the nachtsalon at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam on Thursday 29 May.
«It's on in this motherfucker. This is history.»

The words of Steven Ellison before his first-ever abstract-experimental set as Flying Lotus in a seated venue that is home to the trio or the quartet. Not tonight. A crowd of some 400 twenty-your olds, drawn by the appeal of seeing these two prodigy Warp artists perform together for the first time in Amsterdam, caused havoc at the place so used to civilised discourse after a concert. Not this time. Aardvarck and Cinnaman, runaway cult figures from the 7,5th floor of a Spike Jonze film, meticulously murdered the crowd until 5 am with wonky, crunky and junkie bass and beats. FlyLo cameod like he ran the place; Hudson Mohawke said «Ooops.»
Early 2007, Flying Lotus played in Amsterdam for the first time.

Swiss born Dimitri Grimm (1980) makes electronic music of intricate rhythmic quality and clear sonic texture. Under his moniker Dimlite he released his first EP ‹A/DD› on the Berlin imprint Sonar Kollektiv in August of 2003. After that he has traded identities a few times, releasing a CD as Misel Quitno and two as Dimlite.

This little interview was conducted via MySpace on 21 March 2008.

Juha van 't Zelfde Your name is mentioned in one breath with artists as Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke, producers of a post-Dilla form of hip hop. Do you feel part of a larger movement?

Dimitri Grimm Awwwwww..... I've been put in a whole lot of other drawers before that. I guess it's more like a natural shift of generations, technologies and techniques within a branch of the artform of Hip hop than a new movement. I feel like there's a bunch of excellent mad scientists doing their music differently. They're fed up. They don't really identify with/care about the movement of ‹Beat Music›. I'll just suggest that, coming from my own viewpoint. I have a deep love for good loops, but my general interest in music goes way beyond Beats. If one listens through the Dimlite records it'll become obvious. I've also put out those side projects under different guises. ‹The Slapped Eyeballers› two years ago, which was really more of a friendly rock-ish EP, or the Misel Quitno album this year, more of an experimental, retro, soundtrack thing. I don't know, I imagine those things won't be too interesting for somebody who just got down with the whole new beat thing, but on the other hand they might help pointing into the direction of all kinds of exciting music.

JZ How do you work? Do you wake up early and go into the studio, or do you work at night? And what equipment do you use? Have your methods and equipment changed over the years?

DG During the night mostly, or whenever I'm awake, whenever I have to. I had just released the first EP when the fundament changed radically – from Atari and sampler to a computer to do the sampling and sequencing. Not much has changed since, only the ear does, some things have become worse, some better. I love to use analogue gear whenever somebody's willing to lend it to me. I got a small sampler again just a few weeks ago because staring into the screen all the time started to make me sick. The methods and processes are constantly changing, sort of self-inflicted.

Dimlite

JZ Is there a difference between making music in the studio and making it on stage? How live is your performance? Do you know the outcome of your set when you perform?

DG The live shows consist of me playing keys, hitting drum pads, looping things up through the mic. All on a loosely preconstructed fundament that I have to control and that leaves room for improvisation - but I usually know where it's going. It is much different compared to working on music at home: I don't have to entertain anyone, don't necessarily have to rock or prove anything. And for now, there's no way to perform all the little handcrafted details live.

JZ What is your experience with the current music industry? Do you benefit from the Web and the decentralisation of power through sites as Last.fm, MySpace and p2p networks?

DG Awwww... it's all good. Somebody help me with that shit. It's the worst time to be a musician, and also the best one right now.

JZ What are you working on now? Do you have any projects unrealized?

DG Yes, that new and 3rd Dimlite album, I want to have it completed this year. I am also working on an album with my friend Elan Mottley from London, she's an amazing singer and songwriter, gives me shivers. The second Misel Quitno outburst..... and some more things!

JZ Thank you for your time Dimitri.

Dimlite will perform live at Bitterzoet in Amsterdam coming Friday 28 March.

In December of 2007, during the first Viral Radio Bash at 11, the industrial museum restaurant that turns into a club at night, it became clear that the architecture of the room fitted the acoustic quality of the ghost of jungle past we know as dubstep in a pleasantly natural manner. The sonic ecology of this monumental club space is mostly tested by the arsenal of minimal techno DJs like Laurent Garnier, Âme and Carl Craig; but not during these nights of sub frequencies.

If Rhythm & Sound paved the way for future dub music, scientifically refining their echo sculptures, the hyperdub generation of Digital Mystikz, Pinch and Rustie have added their imagination to the artform. Much has been said about the ontology of dubstep - read the excellent trails of chroniquer Martin Clark (Blackdown) and the preambules by the professor of bass Steve Goodman (Kode9) - but nothing approaches the tactile experience of percussive bass and the hauntological effect of absent rhythms.

Last night brought together artists who have mastered the art of the delusional drum and the intuitive intelligence of infrasonic architecture. And what a night this was. With an astronomical number of 700 people the second Viral edition was sold out - an unforseen‹icing on the cake› . I would like to thank everyone who visited for supporting this special night of experimental dance music, the kind people of 11 for their hospitality and sense of adventure, and finally the artists for delivering such stellar performances - FS Green, Cinnaman, Rustie, RsD, Mala, Peverelist, 2562 and host Andrew Makkinga. (It was also wonderful to see Pinch (with his 10 man army from Bristol), Aardvarck, T-mus, Derek Djons, Skeej, Bojcot and all the other artists and dubstep aficionados present again).

Next up will be Beat Dimensions at the Bimhuis, on Friday 2 May. The line up: Flying Lotus (Warp/Los Angeles), Hudson Mohawke (Warp/Glasgow) and Cinnaman (Beat Dimensions/Amsterdam). I look forward to seeing you there.
