Abbe May at Ding Dong Lounge, Melbourne on 21 Jun 2013

Location: Ding Dong Lounge

($27.55+bf)

Kiss My Apocalypse is unashamedly sexual and would almost be romantic if it weren’t for the vitriol. The product of two summers, the album was created over 18 months of experimentation with producer Sam Ford and a Mellotron in a little studio in Perth, Western Australia.

The album follows 2011’s AMP-nominated masterpiece Design Desire. A heavy, guitar drenched experimental rock record which opened international doors and cemented Abbe May as one of Australia’s most lauded female artists.

“Design Desire was a deliberate trip into 70’s psychedelia and an intentional marrying of that with reverb drenched enya-esque 80’s vocals,’ said Abbe. “I’m bored with standard rock. I’m bored with the standard ‘cool’.”

Design Desire spawned four singles including ‘Mammalian Locomotion’ which prompted MTV US’ Nic Harcourt to write “Abbe May plays a scorching guitar- she is the f#cking s##t” and influential blog Popmatters to proclaim “Abbe May is set to destroy the entire rock world”. The dark, yet unmistakable pop fusion of the album achieved a near clean sweep of four star reviews and led to national tours and inclusion on some of Australia’s biggest festivals including Big Day Out, Pyramid Rock and Meredith.

Kiss My Apocalypse is a completely different animal. Minimal guitars. Maximum synth driven doom pop. It’s as if the vocals took over while the guitars were passed out in the bathroom.

“Pop is sexy when done well and it’s incredibly difficult to do it well if you try too hard,” said Abbe. “We wanted to get away from music that took itself too seriously. I’m so tired of this whole shoe gaze – it-cost-a-lot-of-money-to get-a-haircut-that-looks-like-i-haven’t-brushed-my-hair-in-months type s##t. “Artists” in denial that they are basically just entertainers. Being an entertainer is more meaningful if you ask me. It’s not such a selfish pursuit.”

Stereophonics + Atlas Genius at Palace Theatre, Melbourne on 21 Jul 2013

Location: Palace Theatre

For the first time since 2010, the time-tested Stereophonics will be returning to Australia for a run of headlining dates. Bringing with them their latest studio album Graffiti On The Train, the shows will be a mix of old and new, with a total of 8 full-length records worth of tracks to piece together their setlist.

As it turns out, Graffiti On The Train was a case of the hard-earned eighth album. Composed during a self-imposed ban on touring, the band put all their focus and energy into the release. For a band with some 21-odd years experience under their belt, there are few situations in which they would be in uncharted waters but this album is the maiden release to be facilitated through their very own record label.

Their return to Australia was confirmed earlier this year, though back then their arrival was said to be late April, early May. Clearly, that never happened but July should be just as rad, given the amount of international talent who will be in town during that month.

It will be a quick stop off this time round with the band hitting Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne only. Check out the video for first single and title track from the new album Graffiti On The Train below.

Tickets go on sale 10am Monday, 13th May

CHVRCHES at Corner Hotel, Richmond on 5 Aug 2013

Location: Corner Hotel

(Sold Out)

In the last twelve months, Scottish synth-pop trio, Chvrches, have been setting the blogosphere alight with their meteoric rise from relative unknowns to the UK’s next big thing. This winter they’ll be making their touring debut on Australian shores including this show.
Back in May 2012, the world got its first glimpse of Chvrches when the track, ‘Lies’, debuted on the blog of NYC taste-maker label, Neon Gold. With the band’s identity something of a mystery initially, as information about who they were and where they came from began leaking, so too did the fever pitch, followed by the scramble of A&R heavyweights, agents, publishers… and of course, the fans. By the end of 2012 they were on every music rag’s ‘Bands To Watch in 2013’ list, including ranking at #2 in the UK Blog Sound of 2013 list, and being voted #5 on the BBC Sound Poll 2013 – the highly regarded annual BBC poll of music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent in the UK. Predictions were correct, as 2013 has thus far seen Chvrches continue to sell out shows across the UK, US and Europe, in the wake of their rousingly kinetic appearance at SXSW in Austin. So electrifying were their SxSW performances, they were awarded the inaugural Grulke Prize for Best Developing Non-US Act, named after recently passed SxSW Creative Director, Brett Grulke. Musically, their blend of classic and modern analogue synthesisers, bruised beats and crude vocal sampling came to the fore in their debut single, ‘The Mother We Share’, released in late 2012, which Pitchfork called “a soaring synth-pop meteorite centered around a sky-high chorus”. With high profile support slots under their belts with Passion Pit and Two Door Cinema Club as well as their own headline shows and a slew of European festival appearances to come, theirs is a star well and truly on the rise. Do not miss the chance to see Chvrches on these club dates; they won’t be playing rooms this size for long.
