In 2009's Spring (Fall, here in South Hemisphere - world isn't all North Hemisphere), the band Lacuna Coil releases their new fresh album, Shallow Life. The record was produced by the Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Pearl Jam and [ugh!] Avril Lavigne) at NRG Studios in North Hollywood, CA.

This grenade contains big amount of crapness, handle with care.

Note: I noticed that the low quality files in the MySpace really pissed me off, and they made my review to become very partial. So I'm re-evaluating the music ratings, but my opinions about them still the same. I'm also adding the bonus track "Oblivion".

Survive [7.0/10.0]
Strange intro. Ridiculous chorus. The guitars and the drums are heavy as Karmacode's (but it doesn't mean it is good, actually, it is crappy).

I Won't Tell You [5.0/10.0]
Catchy as hell. Poor guitars, poor drums, poor composition. Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears woudn't think 2 times before performing this music. Believe me.

Not Enough [9.0/10.0]
Ahhhh this is worth listening, at least! The best track in the album, and the only one that could show some evolution of the band since their previous works. Cristina's voice doesn't sound dull, but again, the chorus is as catchy as any american pop-rock band. The piano in the final is... lol

I'm Not Afraid [7.0/10.0]
Ugh... Don Gilmore should get reaped after fucking up with Cristina's vocals in this track, mainly in the chorus. Same for the poor percussion. Andrea should growl.

I Like It [4.0/10.0]
Vomitory. Hey, Avril, there's another one for you! (I would give 0.0 for this track, but the chorus is worth listening, so it deserves 4.0)

Underdog [6.0/10.0]
Haaa some good guitars. But the lyrics are very repetitive and it may bore after some listenings. "you are going down, you are going down..."

The Pain [6.0/10.0]
Sounds very interesting. The post-rock-ish ambience (percussion and Cristina's vocals) is a new element that Lacuna Coil should explore more times. But, again again and again, it's repetitive and catchy as hell.

Spellbound [7.0/10.0]
Uptempo and very easy. The lyrics are interesting and it doesn't bores, but it may become annoying beacuse you'll be singing this music all day after listening it lol. Anyway, good choice for a single.

Wide Awake [6.0/10.0]
Again, lol for the piano! The only downtempo track of the album remembered me of After Forever. Not much comments for this track, you may already know it has poor vocals, easy chorus, etc...

The Maze [5.0/10.0]
Ridiculous guitars. Poor percussion. Mrs. Lavigne, take this one!

Unchained [3.0/10.0]
Please, God of Metal, forgive them, thay don't know what they're doing!!

Shallow Life [6.0/10.0]
This midtempo track has some good potential, but Cristina's voice was very unexplored, some power vocals should save this music from crapness. Piano = lol.

Oblivion [8.0/10.0]
Andrea's vocals almost destroy this track, but it sounds good. One of the best of the album (unfortunately it is a bonus track). Cristina's few vocal lines are ok. The strong/midtempo percussion, the low-tune guitars make any old fan of Lacuna Coil remember of the previous albums.

Average: 6.2/10.0 (Mrs. Lavigne have rated as 10.0/10.0)

Well, well, well... this album is cheesy. Horrible production, poor compositions, underestimation of Cristina's voice and overestimation of Andrea's potential. Congratulations, Don Gilmore, you've got it!! Lacuna Coil is now as crappy as any other shitty american pop-rock band.

Every band changes. Lacuna Coil did... did a bad choice. I mean, what leads a band that have composed Daylight Dancer, The Ghost Woman and the Hunter, Fragile, To the Edge, Senzafine and When a Dead Man Walks to compose such childish/teeny poppy music like I Won't Tell You and I Like It?

These song names are so cheesy that we could make a little story with them... Look:

"I could quote here tons of good changes that bands have made, but I won't tell you, because I'm not afraid to act like an unchained underdog. The pain of having to listen the entire album was not enough to make me say: I like it. This shallow life is a big survive, it is like being wide awake in the maze of spellbound Avril Lavigne's oblivion."

Who have already seen one of my reviews, have noted that I didn't write much about the tracks, that's because every track sounds very similar to the others, so the best description for them is: POOR, a poor Lacuna Coil, but it is still Lacuna Coil.

They are [were?] one of my favorite bands, even in the controversial Nine Destinies and a Downfall I did like the musical change from their previous works, very acceptable considering all the crapness contained in The 13th Floor.

Starting from the lyrics, fulfilled with clichés (even worse than Evanescence's) and ending with all that annoying choirs and cheesy melodies... all these elements make The 13th Floor the worst release of 2009, so far (at least, for me).

When it comes to simplification, Morten should have mirrored Sirenia in successful processes which some bands have taken recently, like Autumn and Delain did, for example.

Autumn started their simplification process in the album My New Time and have grown up since then into a more mature form in 2009, with the release of Altitude. This new work have shown that a lyrical/musical simplification can really be welcome if it's taken in wise direction.

Delain's case is a bit different. Their first album have made them more famous than other emerging bands because of the collaboration of talented guest musicians and, of course, that confusion envolving the track Day for Ghosts and the new singer of Nightwish. The album Lucidity have basically that common sounds who anyone can expect from a Symphonic Metal band... epic melodies, some power here, a ballad there... it's like a culinary recipe! Well, back to 2009: I was really really surprised when I took a first listen to April Rain. I just found a solid sound, simple and heavy, the no-use of the famous recipe "some power here and a little ballad there"... it's just brilliant! That's a great example of what direction a band should take when it comes to musical simplification.

Well, I'm very disappointed with Sirenia and their new album. I was expecting and evolution from their previous work, but it seems that Morten is happy making all those cheesy music to sellout his sound. “There are some tracks that are left over from Storm, stuff that we couldn’t finish up in time for that album. So, there will be some of that stuff on the new album, but having said that, it’s not really in the Storm style. All in all I’d say it sounds a lot more diverse. It’s also slower and a more atmospheric in a way. There’s more piano, which is soft and fragile, but there’s some pretty heavy stuff as well, at least as far as Theatre Of Tragedy goes (laughs). There’s not going to be any growling vocals, though; I’m pretty sure about that. I don’t think anybody could drag Raymond into the studio to do growling vocals anymore. It would have to be a million euro contract for him to do that (laughs).”

“We’ve actually gone back to the way we used to write music which we haven’t done since Velvet Darkness,” Hansen reveals. “We’ve always experimented with ways of writing songs. We’ve been through the whole mp3 thing sending files to each other and piecing songs together on the computer, and that’s always ended with a lot of frustration. So we decided that if we’re going to do a new record, screw it, we get together four or five times over the next year and jam out the songs, sit down and explore the ideas as a unit. That’s what we did this time, writing and arranging in the rehearsal room for the most part. It’s more of a back to basics kind of thing.”

The Path to Decay [6.0/10.0]
We may already been bored of listening to this track. Personally, I became a little sad when I heard it, not because Ailyn’s voice (actually, her voice is the best part of the music), but because of the guitars, it really doesn’t sound like I was hoping for… Anyway, nothing in the world can make both Greeks and Trojans happy.

Lost in Life [7.0/10.0]
It’s very Nightwish-ish. Good one, but definitely not innovative. May become boring after listening several times. I don’t know why, but this track remembered me of Gwen Stefani.

The Mind Maelstrom [8.0/10.0]
Well, finally something different; strange, but different. Very symphonic. The growls sound awesome, as does the guitars. This track is really worth to be named “symphonic metal”. Sounds very like Epica, in Sirenia’s ways. Ermm... WTF is a "maelstrom"?

The Seventh Summer [7.5/10.0]
Hmm… another one very Nightwish-ish, but only in certain parts. The refrain is well composed and differs from others Morten’s music. I may say that this track is a “Frankenstein” of the album, it seems that Morten composed a lot of music, selected the best (or worst) parts of them and mixed into one music, resulting in this track.

Beyond Life's Scenery [8.5/10.0]
Oh this sounds good. Remembered me of After Forever. It’s another with a very well composed refrain. No more comments, this track is in its way to my playlist! (8,5)

The Lucid Door [7.0/10.0]
The drums bores me, but the guitars and Ailyn’s voice can save this track of complete boredom. It’s a good composition, but again, not very innovative and sounds like a mix of Leaves’ Eyes and Epica.

Led Astray [7.0/10.0]
It starts a little boring (and continues as this almost all time) but it may sound good in certain parts. Getting rid of some symphonic elements would elevate this track to a better scale, but… well, I can do nothing xD

Winterborn 77 [7.0/10.0]
Argh, I found a great miss in the vocals that may be forgotten to be corrected: actually, we can note Ailyn taking breath to sing one part of the music, in the refrain. Well, really sounds like a mix of Nightwish and Epica, and have no innovations. Hey Morten, something different, can be? Oh, here comes Sirens of The Seven Seas…

Sirens of the Seven Seas [9.0/10.0]
I longed for something different, and Morten finally give us this! Hmm… not what I expected, but having a track with male main vocals is a signal that Morten’s innovative inspirations are alive. The growls are very good. I remembered of the EP Sirenian Shores. So... can I call it the best track of the album?

Average: 7.5/10.0

I’d say that the great doubt for this album was Ailyn, and she showed us that some people were wrong when saying “she can’t sing!”, because YES, she can, and better then a lot of people in female metal scene, I dare say.

You may note that I insisted in comparisons with other bands, that’s because it really sounded like those bands. I can’t listen the entire album without remembering of bands like Evanescence, Nightwish and Epica. Sadly, a lot of fans were begging for a “heavy” sound, and forgot to mention INNOVATION! If they want a heavier sound, just listen the earlier albums, they won’t eat you.

And Morten, if you want to become more pop(ular), please, get rid of these choirs!!!

Part 1 - New albums

Alice in Videoland - She's a machine (electro)
Hmm... it was better then I expected. I think the band has become musically more mature. The problem was the low number of tracks in this album, only 8, each with 3 minutes in average. There was some rumours stating the they would produce another tracks to be released in a "new version" of the algum, or an EP, or single... well, I don't know.

Animal Alpha - You Pay For The Whole Seat But You´ll Only Need The Edge (hard rock)
At first listening, I found this album really amazing. But, after some playings, I just realized that their debut album, Pheromones is way better. This new album souds a little repetitive sometimes, and also it needs some new experiments. Anyway, the production is wonderful.

Collide - Two Headed Monster (electro)
After more than 3 years, they finally release a new album. Before I get it, I firstly went to their myspace and listened two new tracks of the new relese. And I was surprised with the track Utopia, such beautiful atmospheres, angelic vocals... I just thought that the new album wound have become more "atmospheric rock" and less electro. But when I got the release, I realized that I was wrong; all their "electroness" was still there. No, that's not bad, but I really wanted to hear some new sounds.

Draconian - Turning Season Within (Doom Metal)
SIMPLY DELIGHTFUL. An amazing album, perfect production, great vocals and lyrics. Lisa sounds just wonderful in this release, her voice is incomparably beautiful, as does Anders' verses. Perfection translated into musical notes.

Ellen Allien - Sool (minimal techno)
I have ever been a big fan of Ellen Allien. I consider her one of the best DJ's of the world. Her earlier albums were masterpieces, she could turn some simple noises and sounds into great symphonies. Although, I am a little sad with her new release, Sool. Well, maybe because I'm not that big fan of such minimalist music. The mix of a simple beat + a strange noise didn't catch me. Ellen, please put some more electro attitude into your next releases! (Yes, the electroclash movement has already gone by years, but I'm a nostalgic man xD)

Ladytron - Velocifero (electro)
Another great release of this great band. I was expecting so much this album, I really cound't wait more... there were 3 years of ZERO release from them (apart from Extended Play). Fortunately, Velocifero has become my favorite album from them, passing by 604.

Midnattsol - Nordlys (symphonic metal)
As I grow in ages, I also do in musical taste. Now I'm not that great appreciattive of symphonic metal, and it has been a lot of months that I don't listen this album. I remember that it was not one of my favorites, but was better than their first album. Well, sometimes symphonic metal can be really repetitive...]

Moonspell - Night Eternal (metal)
Another great release. I was really surprised with portuguese metal (it's strange to imaginate portuguese metal when your country was colonized by Portugal xD... here in Brazil we make some stupid jokes that insinuate that portuguese people are really donkey). Also, Anneke's guest vocals in Scorpion Flower made this release even greater. Cheers from your ex-colony, Portugal!

These girls are strange... their new release is good, and I was not expecting any new musical experiments, since they sound more like a big joke then a band xD

I'm new into them, so I don't have many opinions. But I think that this album is better then their first.

Within Temptation - Black Symphony (symphonic metal)
I've already stated some opinions in WT's shoutbox, but I'll repeat them here: Black Symphony is so great that it even made The Heart of Everything's music be listeneable. Another amazing point (you people MUST AGREE with me): Anneke's guest vocals!!

Part 2 - New discoveries

Animal Alpha
I discovered them when I read an interview with Tristania's new vocalist, Mary Demurtas, when she states that Animal Alpha is a great norwegian rock band. And she was right xD

Autumn (the Dutch band)
This was very recent. I was enchanted with the atmospheres of their album My New Time. When I were listening their previous works, I realized that they were just a goth band like any other, but now their sound have really evolved and become more mature.

Curve
I wanted to try their sound because Dean Garcia is now making music with Collide... hmm, they sound good, but not that much I was expecting.

Moonlight (the Polish band)
Strange rock, strange language, strange music... GREAT! (I prefer their recent albums).

Paatos
I discovered them when I was looking for a band that sounded like The Gathering. Paatos have rapidly become one of my favorite bands. And Téa is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard (after The Gathering's Souvenirs album xD)

The 3rd and the Mortal
Same with Paatos. Kari's voice is beautiful! And have to say that Painting on Glass and In This Room are great masterpieces.

To-Mera
I discovered them when I was randomly looking for a prog band xD... anyway, great sounds, and I love the jazz influences.

Ok, ok... I can accept that gothic metal tag, since it's a very uncertain and controversial style... but symphonic metal?

Hey, can someone please show me where are the symphonies in The Gathering, Theatre of Tragedy, Stream of Passion, Lacuna Coil (??!!), Draconian, Eilera, Metallica, Manowar, Iron Maiden, Moonspell, and (oh my metal god!!) even Arch Enemy???!!! (yes, they have been tagged as symphonic metal!)

I think it's a little unacceptable to tag everything with a keys passage as symphonic metal... or even replacing the gothic metal tag for symphonic metal tag. Well, just a little xD
