DEATH IN JUNE LIVE IN BELGIUM- REVIEW

After a lot of stress, if I would finally make it to Brussels due to the strikes here in Greece, I was there! I arrived early at the cult venue named The Steeple in the small and very cute city of Waregem, near Gent in Belgium. The concert was already sold out, many visitors from all over Europe came to enjoy their favorite band, Death In June, live at as many tour stops as possible, during their last as announced tour for the celebration of the band’s 30 years.

It was 19:30, and many fans were already outside the venue and after half an hour I just could not believe what I saw at the merchandising stand! I had never seen anything like that before! Everyone wanted to make sure that they would definitely secure a signed by Douglas P. poster, or at least a signed DIJ cd or T shirt. There was nothing left, when the support band appeared on stage! At approximately 21:15, with delay and after music introduction accompanied by video projections, the live concert started with Of the Wand and the Moon, the project by the Danish Kim Larsen, who played guitar and sang on stage along with 5 more musicians and help from a female singer at vocals too. They were nice and energetic, despite the sound technical problems they had to deal with. After the first 3 songs, they performed much better. The audience seemed pleased, I personally expected more from their appearance, they have loyal fans and played a full set where the following tracks stood out : “I crave for you”, “Sunspot”, “Lucifer”, “Immer vorwarts”, “Lost in Emptiness”

Our excitement reached its peak, as after the support band the necessary changes took place for the much expected upcoming live, with John Murphy (DIJ, Nico, SPK) on stage preparing everything for their performance.

There was a prolonged delay and after 23:00, first John Murphy went on stage, dressed in white uniform and wearing a pointy nose mask which left his mouth uncovered. The atmosphere was fantastic, with dark blue lights, the band’s banners and loads of smoke machine prepared us in the best way possible for what would follow and at the same time made our impatience much stronger. In all this, Douglas Pearce appeared on stage in screams and big applauses. Clearly in great mood, very flattered, wearing his well known mask and military camouflage, greeted his fans very warmly and thanked everyone for attending their show and then started with the first track. I didn’t have great expectations for the songs I was about to listen to, I didn’t expect many hits in the set list. Due the celebrative atmosphere of the night and their tour in general, we were lucky enough to listen to the best possible combination of DIJ tracks that a fan could listen to in a show. Douglas P. is one of whose voice in live performances is exactly and maybe even better that the studio recordings.

A Douglas P. in great mood, expressive, not only as he sang, but as well when he played his guitar or at percussion or the cymbals, he moved to the rhythm of the music constantly. John Murphy kept constantly in admirable contact to him, during their whole set list on stage. Even when they had to change the order of the songs in the set list according to the audience’s requests - Douglas P. kept encouraging us to request our favorite track for them to play live- their communication on stage was fantastic.

To get an idea of what went on, here is the concert set list, that it’s also the set list in the majority of the shows of their 30 year celebration tour. I really still feel ecstatic that I was also there.

1.1. Till the Living Flesh is Burned
2.2. Ku Ku Ku
3.3. The Honour of Silence
4.4. Omen-Filled Season
5.5. Pigeons

Great show :-) Virgins o.r. Pigeons was a pleasant surprise for me, although they weren' t ready to perform live on time and that delayed a bit the appearence of Shnarph!, which was much expected from the audience.

I expected a lot from SHNARPH! and I am actually amazed, because apart from their great music and live performance, they are the coolest guys!!! Among others, I enjoyed tracks like Ihr redet & atmet, Jede Nacht, Der liebe Tod- Matthes & Roland, vielen dank fuer ein ausgezeichnetes Show :-) _Their new tracks rule. Playlist :
Intro (Das Berghaus)
Jede Nacht
Gottes Furcht
ER
Die letzte Pussy
Virus
Ausgebrannt
Eine tolle Predigt
Der Eiertanz
Der Liebe Tod
&
Reden und Atmen

What could I say about Kolja, Soman? I have seen him live about 5 times in festivals like M'era Luna, WGT. He is absolutely amazing and the vibe between him and the audience is unbelievable. Great tracks (Mask, pusher, ransom) super energy !! The 3 dancers who accompanied Kolja on stage were absolutely amazing !
