I'll put one album from each year and two honorable mentions.



The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails

I'll kick things off with one of Trent Reznor's best works, The Downward Spiral, now this may not be my favourite album of Nine Inch Nails but it's not far behind Pretty Hate Machine and The Fragile in that regard but it is still a mighty fine album.
The album opens with the very cluttered song Mr. Self Destruct it isn't a bad thing that there's so much happening in this track, if anything it adds power to the lyrics due to the confusion invoked by the instruments and synthesiser.
It then moves on to the comparatively minimalistic Piggy which has a simple consistent bassline throughout with a nice simple drumbeat and synthesiser work as well as some very emotive vocal work from Trent which really helps get the message of the song across through the very obvious desperation in his voice.
Heresy is up next which is one of my personal favourite Nine Inch Nails tracks mostly due to the lyrics and outstanding synthesiser work put into the track with some heavily distorted guitarwork thrown in for good measure, the abrupt stop at the end also adds power to the track.
The frantic March Of The Pigs is up next the song really gives the impression of an incoming threat through the drumbeat which continues to speed up throughout as well as more heavily distorted guitars but I must say my favourite part of the whole song is when everything abruptly stops and Trent sings cleanly with some soft piano and it then picks up straight away from out of no where.
Now its time for the bands most popular and often misunderstood song Closer which many interpret as a song about violent rape on the surface but if you look past that is actually talking about all the issues that sex can create within someone mentally and physically, it can also just be seen as a song about addiction or lust or even as a semi-romantic love song. The song does have a very funky synthesiser line throughout the whole thing which really drives the song home.
Ruiner is the first forgettable song on this album for me, I don't know what it is but there's no real hook to this song for me it is a great track, don't get me wrong but it just isn't as good as the rest of the album but if it was on another album or by a different artist I'm sure I would be singing its praises but this is Nine Inch Nails here. I lie actually the solo of this song is possibly one of the best Trent has done but that doesn't make up for the rest of the song unfortunately.
I really enjoy this next track, The Becoming again mostly due to the franticness of it and the sound clips played throughout which sound like children's screams, I know that sounds morbid but it really gives the song that something else as well as the outstanding bassline in the song which seems to be present in most Nine Inch Nails tracks as well as the clean breakdown halfway through which then leads into a signature NIN breakdown.
Now there's a slightly upbeat Nine Inch Nails song in I Do Not Want This, now when I say upbeat I mean by Nine Inch nails standards so if any other band did this song it'd be incredibly depressing. It's essentially about teenage angst.
Big Man With A Gun is another track which is easily forgotten, it's just a signature NIN track with no real hook to it but it is still a superb song.
A Warm Place is a nice relaxing ambient song which leads wonderfully into Eraser.
Eraser takes a while to get going but the build up is all worth it as the songs suddenly explodes into a sea of heavily distorted guitars, bass drums and synthesisers.
Reptile teases the listener with a large build up but no payout, this isn't a bad thing as it keeps your anticipation up for the whole track and even makes you feel happy there was no large breakdown in the song as it would have ruined the amazing atmosphere built up by it and the title track...
The Downward Spiral is another beautiful instrumental track on this outstanding albums, the segway from Reptile really makes you appreciate it even more, it slowly builds up from a slow calm song to a frantic mess which actually makes me worry, there is faint screaming in it near the end really bringing out the pain as well as muffled voices.
Now for the final track of the album, the song covered by the legendary Johnny Cash, the original version of Hurt. Now I have nothing but the utmost respect for Cash but this is the best version of the song in my eyes, it just seems so much more desperate than the Cash version where he had already lost everything whereas the Nine Inch Nails version there is still a fight to be had but the protagonist is losing that fight and in the end gives the impression that he does lose which just adds a much larger punch to the song and is a very emotional song to end this very emotional album on. It is also one of the only clean Nine Inch Nails songs which fits it very well especially using the old acoustic guitar on it as if it had the regular Nine Inch Nails treatment I don't think it would be as powerful. It does go into the regular NIN formula near the end but it fits after the very emotional build up of the rest of the song and the way it just fades out at the end is absolutely marvelous. It just leaves you saying wow. In summary, great closing track, great album, great band.

I do NOT own St. Anger, Loador Reload
In order of my appreciation

Death Magnetic

I enjoyed this album, it did feel like a return to the old Metallica I know and love however the one glaring problem with it is Hetfield's vocals. They are too clean and refined to be a Metallica album. Everything else is there, the double kick drums, the breathtaking Kirk Hammett solos and even some heavy bass which we haven't had since the death of Cliff Burton. However James' vocals stick out like a sore thumb and tells you that this is not the Metallica you know and love, which is a shame because musically this album is superb but it just lacks that extra oomph which is usually delivered by Hetfield's vocal work, I also feel some songs drag on too long in an attempt to make them "epics" or as if Metallica are trying to establish themselves as some kind of Prog Metal band. The instruments lack the extra aggression of the earlier albums, which is what really defined the 80s Metallica. All in all, this is a solid album but it isn't great, however it does leave me in high hopes of their next album which will hopefully be a true return to form.

Metallica

Where should I start on Metallica's self-titled album? I'll start by saying I feel this is their most overrated piece and doesn't deserve half the praise it receives. I feel this is the album were Metallica realised their success and decided to capitalize on it, this is where I feel they sold out. This album is decent but that's all it is, you can tell that the radical change in sound is for radio airplay and it obviously worked with Enter Sandman wrongly being regarded as one of the best metal songs of all time, when I feel it isn't even the best on this album that "honour" goes to My Friend of Misery. Now I know it sounds like I hate this album but I actually quite enjoy it, I just hate the hype that surrounds it.
Rating: 7/10

Kill 'Em All

Coming in at number 4 is Metallica's debut album. Now don't get me wrong, I love this album like a son but it just cannot compare to the other three albums on this list. It begins with a bang, ends with a bang and almost implodes in the middle with (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth. I think that Dave Mustaine's influence on this album is what really made it as amazing as it was. Now onto the album, it was one of the heaviest of its time which I suppose is what you expect when it's being made by the founding fathers of Thrash Metal. This is everything Metallica should be but the sound was refined in the albums above this one which is why it is only number 4, it would still be in my top 10 metal albums of all time however.
Rating: 8.5/10

...And Justice for All

...And what is there to say about this album? Well I'll begin by saying I didn't enjoy it immediately, it took a while to grow on me but when it did I was blown away, this album sounds as if progressive metal and thrash metal had a baby. I would say this is Metallica's most aggressive album once it gets going, I would put this down mostly to Lars' drumming however Hetfield's rhythm guitar does play an important part as well as Hammett's face melting solos, I haven't mentioned the bass as well there isn't any, Jason Newsted is incredibly quiet and subtle with his bass, I'm not sure whether this was intentional or not however Newsted could never overtake Cliff Burton so at least they didn't try. The majority of the hype around this album is about One and whilst it is superb it isn't the best on the album or as some claim the best metal song of all time, the best song on this album is either Blackened or ...And Justice for All, now don't get me wrong I love One but the hype surrounding it doesn't fit the quality of the song. There is not a bad track on this album but it loses out on a top 2 spot only just.

Master of Puppets

I often see this album paraded around as the greatest metal album of all time, now whilst it is an outstanding album with very few flaws I do not see it as the best metal album of all time let alone the best Metallica album. HOWEVER, it is an excellent album and one of my all time favourites, there is not a weak track on this album and it shows, every song from Battery to Damage, Inc. is an amazing thrash metal song with Hammett, Burton and Ulrich really showing their musical chops which are assisted by the growling vocal style of James Hetfield. I see the title track Master of Puppets being lauded over a lot and whilst it is a great song once again isn't the best on this album that honour belongs to The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) or Battery. One could also argue a case for Orion, Disposable Heroes and Damage, INC. there is that many quality songs on this album however it falls just short of the number 1 Metallica album of...

Ride the Lightning

Ride the Lightning. This album is a huge achievement not only in metal history but in music history. It is without doubt one of the most influential metal albums of all time, there is not a dull moment throughout the whole album, beginning with the ever angry Fight Fire With Fire and culminating with Metallica's epic instrumental track The Call of Ktulu with 6 other outstanding tracks in between including the bands first ballad Fade to Black and the song which shows why Cliff Burton was more than a bassist For Whom the Bell Tolls as well as the incredible title track Ride the Lightning. This is definately Metallica's best album and one of if not THE best metal album of all time.
