That's because comparisons are probably the best thing that can be done with Megadeth's later career until they do something new.

Until they do something new, what they're doing now is good enough for me.

2009's Endgame was enjoyable. It was a heavy/thrash metal record. If SFSGSW met Countdown to Extinction, the result would very likely have been Endgame.

2011's Thirteen is enjoyable. It is a heavy/speed metal record. There is not much thrash to be found here. Never Dead and Wrecker have the thrashiest moments on the record. Most other tracks are thinly veiled speed metal.

Thirteen would be, I suppose, SGSGSW meeting Youthanasia. This record has a "dark" and, I suppose, "urgent" feeling to it. Maybe one of the intentional points to be made with this record is that it was produced so damn fast, but it doesn't really feel rushed.

The remakes... Black Swan is more speed metal than the original hard rock sounding one from United Abominations. More shredding in the new Black Swan. I didn't like the original Black Swan. I like the new one. New World Order is a fun song. I think it's very fitting for the record, and it's very well executed. Millennium of the Blind may be the weak point of the remakes. It's just... well... it should work, but it doesn't. Something like that. Hey, it's more honest than some wannabe Pitchfork bullshit, right?

The song Sudden Death is a remake, too. I think the remake feels more Megadeth than the very mechanical sounding Guitar Hero version. It's also very fitting to set the tone of the album. The lyrics and shredding. Yeah.

The others songs... Never Dead is the obvious nod for best song. Since everyone's heard that, Wrecker has a catchy riff... it's a lot like something you'd hear on SFSGSW, only it has very Youthanasia-esque elements...

Deadly Nightshade has this weird laugh intro, and it's probably the most catchy number, I guess. The riff is very... stoner? Yeah... Megadeth's stoner moment. Somehow they took Youthanasia's slower tempo, merged it with trippy vocal content, added in a simple riff, huge-ass bends... it's totally a stoner metal song... but from Megadeth. Very Black Sabbath, in places. The solos start with this insane classical shredding, and there's a break with a sample, and more insane classical shredding.

OK, there's a lot of good shit here.

Just go listen to it. Download it, buy it, who cares?

It's not Peace Sells or Rust in Peace, but it is the best offering possible without being those records.

My old Macbook (December 2008 - March 2011) was my most used computer, though my older iMac (April 2007 - December 2008, March 2011 - May 2011) had its fair share of music go through it. I wiped it and let my cousin anomandr use it for about half a year. When I got it back, I deleted a lot of his old shit and put a ton more on it.

I'd say he had 3GB on that when I got it back in March, and now that number has increased by 87GB.

I get around.

The first album downloaded on this computer was Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz. The second was Mastodon's Crack the Skye. That's what I'm jamming at the moment... and you know, these speakers are damned amazing for laptop speakers. More detailed than most surround sound... or I could just be high, which I am...

I just decided that third will be Entombed's superb Left Hand Path. Fourth is likely to be Electric Wizard's Dopethrone.

Needless to say, my charts may not be too reflective of tastes as late, or may be even more so. Who knows? There is nothing more pathetic, painful, and annoying, to me, as a long time death metal/grindcore fan. Nothing. I used to think Numetal was bad. I used to think metalcore was bad.

Then suddenly, deathcore... everywhere.

I was just really getting into death metal (and grindcore) when the shitcore plague first hit. It was nothing short of shameful: here are kids who have decided that they want to tattoo their entire bodies, put gigantic doorknobs in their ears (and noses, and lips, and whatever else), do the Justin Bieber hair thing (even though it was mainly confined to metalcore and emo acts in those days), and make br00tal music.

News for you, deathcore shits: deathcore isn't br00tal, it's st00pid.

This isn't just about deathcore, though. This is about the long, looming frustration felt towards the metalcore scene as well. As the metalcore scene was exploding (REALLY exploding, not that Shadows Fall hype bullshit), around 2005, it was a more abrasive form of something I now find equally appalling: numetal.

While I was getting into Megadeth, Pantera (regrettable, Panterrible are), Slayer, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and the mother of all extreme bands, Venom, everyone and their mother was hailing bands like Trivium as the greatest thing in the universe.

The bitterness was palpable, but no more so than that felt towards numetal. Hearing bands like Slipknot, Disturbed, and System of a Down hailed as being "modern" and "metal" (at the same time!).

Deathcore, though, changed things entirely. I had known deathcore existed before Bolt Thrower, Strapping Young Lad, and Napalm Death teamed up to blow my balls off. I just thought it was a trendy subset of that metalcore bullshit and would go away like metalcore was starting to at the time.

Never more wrong.

Deathcore was always the elephant in the room for me. I knew it was lurking, and getting bigger, and I fucking despised it. It took everything I held pure from bands like Bolt Thrower and Napalm Death (and SYL, to a lesser extent) and just fucking raped it. Take out all of the good elements of Napalm Death and you have shitcore. It was mildly annoying, but never something I had to face...

...until...

...College.

It is here that our story really takes off and descends to the depths of "I fucking hate this shit", for one simple reason: my first college roommate was, and is, a deathcore shit. The countless days spent having to deal with shit like killwhitneydead and Whitechapel and Suicide Silence... over and over hearing the shitty Family Guy samples in the one deathcore act played over and over...

IT. WAS. MADDENING. SPARTA.

...And you know the worst part? It wasn't over after he was gone. After I finally convinced that shitwit scum sucking trendcore motherfucker to get the fuck out of my room and leave me to my sweet, sweet silence (and actual death metal), it was peaceful until two semesters later.

Enter Harley.

Now, let me be clear: Harley is, by no means, a 'bad' person. He is a bassist. He has gauges in his ears. He has scene hair. He smokes weed (this I like). He listens to deathcore. He played in a deathcore band. He called deathcore "grindcore."

We're 'friends' to this day. That also needs to be made clear. He's not at all a douchebag asshole motherfucker like my roommate was. He's a "good" guy. We just don't talk much anymore post-college.

I can't tell you just how disappointing it was to hear someone ask "Do you like grindcore?" only to have them respond after my frantic "Yes!!", my face brightly lit with anticipation of awesomeness, "Suicide Silence? Whitechapel?"

If I have ever wanted to reach out with both hands and strangle someone to the ground until life leaves their very bodies in the middle of an interstate while high as shit, this was that time.

He knows nothing about death metal. That's another thing that gets me about this whole scene. Last semester, there was a kid with a Whitechapel shirt on. I attempted to talk to him about death metal and he looked at me like I had tentacles flowing from the top of my head in the shape of a space-penis.

If they were to balance their deathcore with death metal, it wouldn't be nearly as bad. If they were to balance their deathcore with basic, rudimentary knowledge of death metal beyond "Cannibal Corpse are awesome!!1" (they're not, for the record), I could possibly deal with it.

I listen to the originals. I listen to the fathers. I listen to the creatives.

I am treated as a second-class citizen in my own territory by a bunch of fucking know-nothing scene kids into trendy shitcore that will be gone in a couple of years. Where is the justice?

So in response to this criminal punishment for decadence, I hereby announce Fuck Deathcore as the official group of deathcore fucking sucks and needs to be destroyed and all of its fans can die in a fire along with their pathetic bands. Yeah.

Regardless, Dimebag was a good riffer. His solos were shit. Most of his music just plain wasn't amazing.

Any time someone says Dimebag is the bestest ever the first thing I do is refer them to Megadeth's Peace Sells. Dimebag was not capable of an album like this. Nor was he capable of Reign in Blood by Slayer or even ...And Justice for All by Metallica.

So I'm posing a challenge to myself. I listen to 251 tracks per day at present and over my break (19th to 7th) I will get about 4769 tracks, so from now until the 7th I'm going to try and get Slayer to jump from around 750 tracks to over 4000.

I would expect that Slayer be the 4th band to 4000 at this rate, but you never know. Their competition will be Entombed and Dead Kennedys.
