My experience meeting Westlife

Okay. I'm gonna try to not make this too long, but as you can imagine, it's gonna be pretty hard. It was one of the best and most exhausting days of my life, I can tell you that. I've told this story about onehundred and seventeen times, but those times have been more like "Westlife...signing...talking..." You know the drill.
But as this is gonna be long enough as it is, so let's just get started.

Some background:
I have loved Westlife since I was 7, and heard Fool Again on an Absolute Kidz CD. I don't know what happened, it was just an instant love that kept with me... and it's still with me, now that I'm just about to turn 18. As you can see from my charts, I listen to them about 4 times as much as anything else, and there's no doubt in my mind that they will always have a special place in my heart.
So, anyway, moving on...

The 4th of December 2009, Westlife held an album signing in Nordstan, Gothenburg, Sweden, to promote their new album Where We Are, two days after its Swedish release. After the signing, they were set to perform their new single What About Now on the Swedish Idol show.
Gothenburg is about 451 miles (726 km) from Sundsvall, where I live. The day before the signing, my best friend came over to my place, and we went to a record store to buy the album, but they didn't have it... We almost freaked out, cause in a worried moment we believed they wouldn't sell the album at the signing. (WTF?)
We ended up finding it in a gas station, for some reason, when we were buying our candy... So we went home, watched the Croke Park-DVD and actually smelled the CDs. They smelled wonderful, so don't judge us.

At 1AM, our excited fangirl hearts finally managed to calm down, and we went to sleep.
At 4AM, the alarm went off. Even just waking up, let me tell you, we were *shaking* with nervousness and excitement. Neither of us had met the lads before - they hadn't been over here in about 5 years.
At about 5-6 AM we got on the train to Gothenburg. As tired as we were from the 3 hours of sleep that night, I don't remember getting any sleep at all on the train, there are no words for how nervous I was. We didn't even know where we were supposed to go when we arrived - Gothenburg was a completely unknown city for both of us!

We finally arrived at Nordstan at 12. Westlife were expected to arrive at 5 PM... so what was there to do, but sit down on the floor and wait.
The food we had with us consisted in small oranges, gingerbread, saffron buns and a couple of small yoghurty things. We didn't buy anything, in all honesty we were way too nervous to eat anyway. (I can't believe it, but I'm seriously starting to shake a little just by writing this...)

Since it was early December, the enormous shopping center was all made up for christmas. Glitter, christmas balls, lights in all different colors, and a big christmas tree in the center. It was all a bit surreal, to be honest.
...and the millions of Westlife posters around the place didn't exactly help.
When we got there, we got to know that the record store was giving away free posters to everyone who bought Where We Are from them. We were a little disappointed that we had already bought it, but fear not -- we got to borrow two bags from a couple of girls, which we held up to the poster-giver-away-ers, and they didn't even check for receipts.
Go us...

We sat down at very start of the signing queue, I think there was about 4 girls before us. (Well, what to do, what to do, when you have 6 hours of train to get there...)
At 3PM, some of the remaining contestants from Idol came to perform for a while - we lazily watched them perform from the queue right beside the stage, and more and more people started arriving. The queue behind us was getting really, really long.
For a long time, they played the Idol-CD in the speakers, but I can't even remember any of the songs they played. That was... very unimportant.
But when we heard What About Now come on, through all the talking, the noises... Well, there were so many moments when we were like "this is really happening, they're really gonna be here..." and that was definitely one of them.

So, as the time began to get closer to 5... they were nowhere to be seen. Our train back to Sundsvall was set to leave at 7PM, so my and my best friend were starting to get more than very nervous by then.
The "host" or whatever I should call him, Daniel Da Silva, came out on stage and all of us who were in the queue *ran* as far forward as we could, but he was only there to... try and keep us calm. They were gonna be late.
The Where We Are CD played...over and over and over again, pretty much until we all knew the lyrics to all of the songs, I think. Time passed, and at one point, Daniel Da Silva came out on stage and said: "Do you like the CD?"
"YES!" all of us yelled.
"Do you want to hear it again?" came the next question.
"NO!" all of us yelled. We wanted nothing short of the real Westlife by then, but he had nothing to offer. They were stuck in the Gothenburg traffic, apparently...

Everytime Da Silva came out on stage, our hearts nearly lept out of our chests, but everytime he came out, he said they were still not there. Finally, when we had heard the CD about 4 times, he came out and said that Westlife were *in the building*. Everybody started spinning around, everyone started talking so much louder, the excitement that was already about to kill us grew even stronger. It was genuinely like a virus in there...

And then, Daniel comes out, and they're there. They're about to enter the stage. We were almost at the front of the queue, and we couldn't see the end of it. There were so many people lined up, and considering the lads were over an hour late, I feel sorry for them, since alot of them probably didn't get their CDs signed.
In front of the stage were a million small girls that, I think, didn't care much about getting anything signed, but were mostly there to just see them as closely as they could.

And when Westlife came out on the small stage, oh, my God.
That's all I can say.
Oh, my GOD.
The years of watching DVDs, of drooling in front of youtube, of lying in bed listening to their CDs... and they were there. Unbelievable. They actually exist in real life.
Da Silva started talking to them, and they talked awhile about Sweden and such, about the album, about the single.
Mark asked us to sing a bit of What About Now.
Nobody opened their mouths.
...Until my best friend started yelling "WHAT ABOUT NOOOOOW", and soon everyone around us joined in. "Keep it going, keep it going!" Mark said.
We didn't get further than "what if it's lost behind..." before Da Silva cut us off. I seriously wanted to smack him off the stage for doing that, cause it was an amazing feeling, showing the lads that we loved the new single.

Mark and Nicky took pictures from the stage, which they later posted on twitter. Unfortunately neither me nor my best friend can be seen on it, as we were in the queue - but my best friend took alot of pictures herself...
They stopped talking and eventually sat down by a table on the stage, and they started letting people on to the stage.
I remember it moved *so* slowly, and the waiting had... been somewhat of a pain, those last 6 hours on the floor. I remember The Difference was playing in the background as we made our way up to the stage, and as we reached it, it was replaced with As Love Is My Witness.
First in line was Shane. Shane, who is my actual favourite. It sounds weird to say it, but it has to be admitted.
I didn't get to say anything until he started talking to me, and I seriously couldn't believe it. My whole mind was muddled.
"Hiya, how are you?" he asked, and I replied that I was nervous. He told me not to be... and then went on to ask if I was gonna watch Idol that night. I said that no, we couldn't, cause we had to go back home on a train for nine hours, so we were gonna miss it.
"Nine hours?!" he said, and I'm never, never ever gonna forget that. I don't know why, but I think that's what I remember most clearly. "That's a long trip..."
We talked a little more, I don't remember about what, though, and then I started moving on to Mark.
"Thank you so much for this" I said to Shane and held up the booklet.
"Well, it's made for ye, so enjoy it." - Here is another thing that I'll always remember. How Shane pronounced the word "ye", it was like a "yee", and I had been sitting in front of youtube, giggling about that word so many times. I don't know why, but in my ears it just sounded so... Irish.
Moving on to Mark, I heard Shane ask my best friend how she was feeling.
"I'm nervous too" she said.
"Don't be, we won't bite" Shane said with a smile.
"I'll bite ya!" Mark cut in, and we all laughed.
The coming part I don't remember very well, but I remember my best friend asked Mark or Shane for a hug, and they said "sure", but some security dude jumped forward and said no. I guess cause it'd take too much time, and they were already so late...

Next up was Nicky, and he took my booklet and started signing it. Third thing I remember really well: after he signed he looked at his own signature, with a really confused look on his face, for quite a long time, too. Eventually, he gave it back to me, and then looked me straight in the eyes, and *winked*.
What is he trying to do, KILL ME?!
...that was pretty much what happened, anyway. I found my voice, and I asked "can I shake your hand?"
"Of course" he said, and I took his hand... omfg. (Sorry, falling apart a bit over here) He looked me in the eyes the whole time we shook hands. It actually meant alot to me that he did that, it felt like he didn't just look at the whole thing as an "has to be done" kind of thing. It felt like he thought fans should be treated as people and not just... well, you know.

Last was Kian, and he too took my booklet in silence. When he'd signed it, he looked up at me (MAN his eyes are blue) and I asked if I could shake his hand.
Fourth thing I'll always remember: the tone in his voice when he said "of course." I almost felt like I wanted to cry, he said it so softly that... Ugh. He also looked me in the eyes while we were shaking hands, and I just, had a meltdown. I couldn't speak. (I have to say it again: MAN his eyes are blue!)

I walked away from the table, pretty much shaking, and waited for my best friend at the side of the stage. Some other security dude came at me and chased me off, so I hopped off behind the stage, and eventually my best friend joined me.
We stood there and squealed for a while, barely remembering how to speak, comparing the shaking of our hands... before we realised our train was going to leave in 45 minutes.
We took each others' hands and just ran. We had completely forgotten which way the trainstation was, we just ran. Through all the christmas decorations and lights, people stared at us as we went.
I have rarely been as happy as I was right then. I know it sounds strange to say it about a band, four people you don't even know, but I can't say anything else. I was so, fucking happy, I couldn't do anything but laugh and run.

Sooner than later, we had to face that we had no idea where we were going, so we stopped for a second and asked someone for direction.
When we got to the trainstation, I called my mother, and I cried a little. I tried to talk to her but I mostly just squealed, and she mostly asked me to calm down.
Our train was already there, so we went on it and found our seats next to an elderly, nice couple, who let us have the seats next to the window.

I don't remember sleeping on the train home either - I remember trying. When Idol had started, a few of my friends, and my mother, started texting me, saying Westlife were on and they had been doing good.
Our train was to get home at 4AM, and at we had planned to set alarms on our phones so we could sleep, and not miss our stop, but we both ran out of battery. At 3AM we both sat like a couple of corpses, trying our hardest not to fall asleep. And we made it!
We got off in Sundsvall, and I got a ride home.

The next day, I know that at least I slept way too long, and yet I managed to catch the re-run of Idol. My best friend got sick, and I know I felt bad physically a long time afterwards because of the lack of sleep and food, but everything was worth it. More than worth it.
I can describe for you the details, and I have (and omg how long it became), but I cannot explain to you the anxiety, happiness, worry and excitement we went through. It may sound overwritten, it may sound exaggerated, but I can't begin to tell you how much that day meant to me.
Meeting someone you've loved for 10 years makes you nervous that they'll let you down. That they'll be rotten to you and treat you like you don't matter, but I was so happy that wasn't the case.
They were genuinely nice and very ungrumpy. Just the way I would imagine them to be after watching their interviews and DVDs.
Despite the hard things, the trains and the exhaustion, there's only one thing I can say about this day.
It was perfect.

SNSD / So Nyeo Shi Dae / Girls' Generation

Hello people.
I'm feeling... so full of love at the moment, I just wanna praise everything I love. I don't do it enough, you know? And not that any of the people I love are going to read this, but sometimes it just feels good to... well, sometimes, I, anyway, get the urge to just run out to the street and scream "I LOVE KAKIS! (my best friend) I LOVE MY FAMILY! I LOVE WESTLIFE!" you know? It just feels good to get it out. It's like, it all can't fit inside you.
So I'm gonna start with 소녀시대 (Girls' Generation).

I know this Korean girlgroup is down at numer 9 in my charts -- kinda ironic, actually. But there are other forces at work here. ;>
My best friend and I used to go to the same school. She used to constantly nag me and our other friends about this group, SNSD, and none of us really showed any interest. Frustrating, it must have been, to have something so... amazing, and the people you wanna share it with just...don't...get it. It's not like we were haters or anything, but I don't think any of us were that keen on foreign music that we couldn't understand the lyrics to. I know I wasn't.
Then, one day, I get to school, and there's my best friend, COMPLETELY spazzing out by one of the computers - I mean in a big way. Not being able to sit still, this huuuge smile lighting up her face, and this song... this Korean popsong on repeat. (I just have to add, this is not a very usual thing to encouter here -- we're from Sweden.)
Apparently, SNSD released their comeback song, Gee, that day. My best friend was completely over the moon.
When I first heard the song, I thought "well, it's SNSD." Kinda. No hate, no love.
The days passed by, and a week later, I must have heard this song about a million times. You who have heard this song, well, you know it sticks with you in a way that not alot of songs do. All of a sudden, I found myself more than a little intrigued.
The summer came, and as did GENIE, and I was hooked. My best friend taught me their names, taught me how to... well, tell them apart - big challenge there. Taught me how to recognize their voices.

With their newest album, Oh!, their music is like... a drug. They released Oh! and I could not get my head around how much I loved the music. At the start of my SNSD-obsession, it was more the girls, but now, I got the music.
Run Devil Run was realeased. Now there was no turning back.

If I were to try to explain why SNSD is so great, I would say... Well, I don't how to explain it. You really do have to experience the fandom to really get it, but... There are the girls. These 9 gorgeous, lovable, talented girls, who have been working so hard these last three years, since they became SNSD. There are all these antis, that for some reason have decided to waste their time on, basically making websites, videos and pictures that explain how much they hate them.
Is there a good reason?
I don't get it. When I watch SNSD, I see these girls singing and dancing, and all I feel is happy. Their songs are poppy, happy, energetic songs that make you wanna jump around and sing along at the top of your voice (which is actually a challenge, since it's in Korean. But when you love a song so much you wanna learn a foreign language just to be able to understand it, you know you're in for something). Their ballads, on the other hand, can make you feel so much, even when I don't understand the lyrics - and that's just the testament to the girls, and the emotion they are able to put into their voices.

I sometimes don't understand how I can love something so much, that I from the start almost thought nothing of. That I didn't care about. Now I just feel, well, plain obsessed.
The feelings I get when I listen to their debut song Into The New World, are feelings that can't be collected anywhere else. Absolutely nowhere else.
So I really don't understand how SNSD can have so many antis, when I almost wanna move to Korea, just to be able to experience the fandom for real.
So nyeo shi dae, to me, is strength.
