Gil Scott-Heron new album entitled I'm New Here".
(Rated at 4/5)

“Instead, Scott-Heron is placed in a variety of sparse acoustic and electronic settings.

Russell – who charted himself in 1992 with novelty rave hit The Bouncer – has clearly been absorbing Burial's bleak chic and I'm New Here makes maximum use of Scott-Heron's raw, ravaged vocals. A cover of Bobby Bland's beautiful I'll Take Care of You sounds like desperate pleading through the bottom of a glass; Robert Johnson's Me and the Devil is rendered as horror-flick collision of dubstep and primitive electro. The title track, a cover of American alt-rocker Smog, is all slurred words and biographical resonance ("no matter how far wrong you've gone/ you can always turn around"). However Scott-Heron filled the pages of his prison diaries, it wasn't writing new songs. Four covers (one of his own, The Vulture), four short poems and a handful of interludes stack up to a slender 28-minute album. The only time he takes his own prose well beyond two minutes, the result is the brilliant New York is Killing Me, a finger-clicking, bass-humming lament for the simpler pleasures of the south. I'm New Here might turn out to be a footnote rather than an American Recordings-style new chapter, but this is as striking a return as we're likely to hear all year.”
Hot Chip new album entitled " One Life Stand ".
(Rated at 4/5)
“Something magical may well have rubbed off, as One Life Stand not only sees them back on track, it's also their best work, paring down those past excesses and unifying them into an extraordinarily lovely whole. Alley Cats is a perfect balance of the musical, lyrical and intellectual playfulness that has come to define them. A song about loss, it juxtaposes strange, melancholy imagery – people tucked in bed are "planted like crocuses" – and, when all three of the band's vocalists arrive at the line "there's no pain I don't know", convincing heartache.

Underpinning everything is the spluttering machine energy at the heart of vintage dance music. The ghosts of New Order and Visage stalk Thieves in the Night. An existential crisis you can whistle, it ponders the elusive nature of happiness with lyrics like "a want is a lack but also desire". Before the anthemic closer Take It In rises towards its folky chorus, it clanks and squelches like an early Warp Records release, reeking of dry ice, lasers and dancing before the police arrive to spoil the party. Is it possible to have too many ideas? Not if you know what to do with them..”.
Liars new album entitled Sisterworld".
(Rated at 4/5)
“Recorded in an LA suburb so grim that someone died of gunshot wounds on the studio doorstep. No wonder, then, that the cult Australian-American’s trio’s fifth album revels the seedy side to life.
Recommended track to download..... ‘Scissor”
Massive Attack new album entitled "Heligoland".
(Rated at 4/5)
“Just as you can tell a lot about a person by the company he or she keeps, so the scale of a band's ambition can be gauged by their guest vocalists. On paper, then, Massive Attack's first album in seven years should mark a return to their glory days and the unparalleled Protection and Blue Lines. There are contributions from Elbow star Guy Garvey, 3D's old mucker Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval of 90s dream pop cult act Mazzy Star and, on the opener, Pray For Rain, TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe. Best of all, perhaps, for those who hated 100th Window, a 3D solo album passed off as a Massive set, Daddy G has returned from his "sabbatical", eager no doubt to save 3D from himself and inject a note of something other than despair.

And yet, for the first half of Heligoland at least, the Bristolians' fifth proper album is less than the sum of its impressive parts. In a recent preview of the year ahead, one broadsheet journalist described it as "ambitious" and a contender for the Mercury award. Odd, given that unlike Portishead, say, who used their time in exile to reinvent themselves, their fellow West Country act, in 2010, sound as listless as they did seven years ago. As on 100th Window, Mushroom's absence is pronounced, while 3D does little more than mutter to himself – a one-time heavy hitter who's fallen on hard times. "I want to get clean but I've got to get high," he half-raps on Rush Minute, an intriguing opening in dire need of a song. Equally forgettable are Babel and Psyche, both of which are sung by Martina Topley-Bird and, like every record she has made since Maxinquaye, betray her desire to return to the mid-90s when drum'n'bass-flecked woozy soul was quite the latest thing.
Tunng new album entitled "…And Then We Saw Land".
(Rated at 4/5)
“Could there be a more welcome sight hoving into view on the horizon than a fourth Tunng album? Cosy folktronica rustles up besides greater ambition and a taste (On Sashimi) of their travels.
Recommended track to download..... ‘Don’t Look Down Or Back’
Yeasayer new album entitled "Odd Blood".
(Rated at 4/5)
“In stark contrast, Yeasayer's Odd Blood is a piece of piss to listen to, despite a press release that insists that the Brooklyn trio are from "an off-world colony sometime after the singularity" where "glimmering reverb haze is eschewed" in favour of "flickering ectoplasmic wisps". I wasn't sure whether to listen to the record or call Ghostbusters. But once I plumped for the former, I was somewhat shocked to discover a pop record, full of grooves, melodies and recognisable chorus type-affairs. The record revolves around that reverb-heavy, carnival-esque wall-of-sound that has dominated American indie in recent years, and the art part stems from cascading synths, some eccentric percussion sounds and the yearning, nasal croons of Anand Wilder, with plenty of vocal support from fellow Yeasayers Chris Keating and Ira Wolf Tuton.

The reference to an obscure historical figure pops up here in the single Ambling Alp, the nickname given to boxer Primo Carnera. A Nikolai Valuev-type giant, Carnera won the world heavyweight championship in 1933 but was always accused of being a Mob-sponsored false champion. Here, he's simply the thematic launching pad for a big, uplifting chorus that goes, "Stick up for yourself, son/Never mind what anybody else done", which defines the joyful, air-punching feel of songs such as I Remember and Love Me Girl..”.
I’m not exactly sure why but I love end of year reviews. It’s a great way to find new music and a chance to reassess albums you might have passed over. So if you have time please, tell me what I’ve missed out on, list your top albums of the year or maybe send me a link to any interesting end of year reviews!

2009 was the year all of my genre specific play lists got shot to pieces. Artists seemed to defy classification and frankly that made the last twelve months a whole lot more interesting.

Finally many thanks to all my Lastfm friends and everybody else on lastfm who helped me broaden my musical horizons this year!
Blakroc new album entitled "Blakroc ".
(Rated at 4/5)
“Wisely, Blakroc – a rough'n'ready project comprised of white blues duo the Black Keys and a roster of MCs, including the RZA, Mos Def and, from beyond the grave, Ol' Dirty Bastard – take things right back to basics. The premise is simple, but effective. The Black Keys knock out a lo-fi riff, the rappers strut about, sticking to the themes that have preoccupied both bluesmen and MCs throughout the years, notably sex, heartbreak and cash. Star turns include Ludacris and ODB leering all over Coochie, and R&B singer and former Missy Elliott protégée Nicole Wray swaggering through Done Did It, with help from Baltimore newcomer NOE, whose Jay-Z impression is so spot-on he could well be the hip-hop Alistair McGowan. The loose, spontaneous nature of the exercise means there's the odd dud, but there are far more hits than misses. The result? A dead concept is temporarily revived.”.
Maps new album entitled "Turning Of The Mind".
(Rated at 4/5)
“James Chapman, aka Maps, is yet another British laptop electro one-man band, in the mould of Calvin Harris and Theoretical Girl. He comes from Northampton, got a Mercury nomination for his 2007 debut We Can Create, and, in a great many ways, has no distinguishing features in a UK pop landscape awash with arty 80s-influenced synth revivalists. Except for one thing. His second album is a masterpiece that stands with the best - Depeche Mode, Yazoo, the Normal - of the Mute label's electro-pop past.
Various new album entitled "Steppa’s Delight Vol II".
(Rated at 3/5)

“Just when you thought all dubstep was beginning to sound the same, it reinvents itself. This round up of present and future stars suggests it’s evolution rather than revolution though.

The second installment of Soul Jazz's 'Present to Future' dubstep primers jams together an essential set of recent classics and stepping winners from a slightly different pool of artists. Romanian stepper TRG contributes his lush dub/2step raver 'Broken heart' from the fantastic Hessle Audio label, while Croydon yout Quest takes it back home with a cut from his classic split 12" for Anti Social Entertainment on 'Hardfood'. Elsewhere there's new cuts from fresh faces Shonx with the shockingly good 'Canton', and Bristols dystopian dubber Gatekeeper with MC Grizla on 'Shade Darker'. The last side is saved for perhaps two of the scenes finest achievements from Martyn and Shackleton, Martyn's 'Broken' being a firm favourite round these parts and obviously Shackleton's deep blue masterpiece 'Blood on my hands' which still induces the same effect now as it did the first time we heard it, sheer class. This is absolutely ideal entry level gear for anyone new to the sound, but i'm quite sure a lot of you have gaps to fill in your collection that could be nicely plugged with this essential comp.
Recommended track to download..... ‘Shackleton'-'Blood on my hands'
(Rated at 4/5) Q RECOMMENDS

Described as “The artist also known as Dylan Mills:the UK’s first rap superstar”

“The best thing to come out of Bow since the train out of Bow, it's nonetheless bewildering that Dizzee Rascal now finds himself on the verge of national treasure status. Rewind to 2002 when 17-year old plain Dylan Mills wrote I Luv U, his take-no-prisoners update on the age-old battle of the sexes ("it's a shame you got had by the whores!"), set against a squelching bass and chattering drums. It sounded like nothing else on earth, and shone a light on east London's emerging grime scene at a time when the rest of the country thought grime was probably a job best left for Mr Muscle.”
This is a great state-of-the-city album, in the tradition of Something Else by the Kinks, Parklife and, of course, London Calling, which effortlessly taps into that alienated young male desire for a riot of one's own while acknowledging that, when it comes, you'd prefer to be in a drinking den with the cruel girl of your dreams. Because the Kings and Queens here are pawns in disguise. And Jamie T knows exactly how they feel..”
(Rated at 4/5)

“At first glance, you'd expect them to make basement rock'n'roll songs serrated with guitar feedback, but they're more interesting than that. For starters, they're fronted by a boy/girl combo - Romy Madley Croft (guitar) and Oliver Sim (bass) - whose interplay lends their debut an intimate tension. Along with bandmates Baria Qureshi (keyboards/guitar) and Jamie Smith (programming/samples), Croft and Sim craft languid, sparsely arranged love songs that recall atmospheric 80s acts such as the Cocteau Twins and Mazzy Star. Better still, they betray their south London roots: gentle, plaintive melodies are framed by minimal beats that nod to dubstep and R&B.”
Major Lazer new album entitled "Gun’s Don’t Kill People Lazers Do". (Rated at 4/5)

The loose concept behind the project involves the imaginary Major Lazer, a one-armed Jamaican ex-commando and nightclub owner who battles the forces of darkness. Gorillaz-style cartoon videos are on their way, but it's all essentially a wacky front for two deliberately faceless producers and a slew of vocalists. While Diplo's clubland background lies in baile funk and Miami bass, and Switch is the don of the electro micro-genre known as fidget house, the two are best-known for their work on the globally informed pop of MIA and Santogold. They figured it might be a nice idea to go to Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studios in Kingston and revive dancehall reggae for British club kids reared on twitchy electro-disco. They've pulled it off spectacularly well.
Florence and The Machine new album entitled “Lungs".

(Rated at 4/5)

For a while, former Camberwell Art School student Florence Welch tried to be the singer the record companies wanted her to be: namely, a more rocky graduate from the Lily Allen school of wayward girls. Then one day she began banging on the walls of her mate's home studio, instead of playing the drums, picked out a melody on the piano (which she can't play), and wrote Between Two Lungs, a weird and rather wonderful song about a kiss. If you like Björk or Kate Bush, you'll love it. If you like Nick Cave, Tom Waits or even Siouxsie, you'll find much to enjoy elsewhere, from the soulful blues of Girl With One Eye to the ghostly love song I'm Not Calling You a Liar.
Tinariwen new album entitled " Imidiwan ". (Rated at 4/5)

“Tinariwen's signature sound is hard-wired into Imidiwan, from opener Imidiwan Afrik Tendam to the fuzzy funk of Tahult In, and it carries an emotional resonance that transcends language. This is deeply personal music, with scant regard for commercial considerations; it's geography and history that really count. The climate, landscape and tumultuous events that define Mali's desert region brands Imidiwan with an in-built narrative and a compelling sense of drama.”
Kasabian new album entitled "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum".
(Rated at 3/5)

"If, as the Sun insists, Kasabian succeed Oasis as the next massive rock band, theirs will be an odd tale of two Noels. The first is big uncle Gallagher, looking to pass his baton to the mouthy Leicester lads who are wilder than Arctic Monkeys, and who, unlike our kid Liam, don't think Spinal Tap were a real band. So in homage, West Ryder's lunatic opener, Underdog, is classic 90s "mad for it" material - a heady bellyful of Happy Mondays that is followed by the glam-rock Where Did All the Love Go? Not unlike their last album Empire, in short.”
