A fitting end, really (assuming you buy the suicide, and not the homicide, theory). How the fuck do you stab yourself in the chest? That takes a lot of, well, heart. And a sticky-note? Temporary. Convenient. Disposable. Yellow... Perfect. I bet you that note is still kept somewhere safe. It will be the last sticky-note on earth.

Cobain took the easy way – shotgun blast to the head. But to stab yourself in the heart? That’s the death of a poet. When I listen to Elliot Smith I hear a menacing beauty. Real heart ache. Belle and Sebastian, and countless others, write equally pretty ditties but Smith’s disposable Post-it suicide note renders his tunes pretty AND (deeply) disturbing. Disarmingly so. The incident looms just out earshot every time I put an Elliot Smith record on.

This is a reserved glorification of his death – personally I think suicide is a fairly selfish option. It leaves nothing but despair in its wake and I’m pretty sure finding your loved-one with a knife in his chest, with all that blood everywhere, is not the sort of episode you recover from in a hurry (if ever). But you have to respect the sheer romantic tragedy of the thing. It gives the despair of his songs a haunting authenticity.

RIP Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith, 1969 – 2003.

Elliot Smith

I like bread. With salty butter and bittersweet marmalade (and strong, sweet black coffee). With Vegemite and cheese (with sweet white, black coffee). With cheese and Vegemite. With jam. And black tea. And I like toast with butter (and nothing else). I like wholegrain. And sourdough. I even like fresh, soft white bread (very occasionally, and with butter. And maybe Vegemite).

I like music. Music is like bread. It’s a daily staple. I like weird music. And rock music. And music that breaks your heart. And sounds that make you punch your fist in the air.

So I’ve got some daily bread sounds to listen to:

Theryebread: is the right bread. These are sounds that are so right on they make the favourites list.

Thesourdopebread: is the self-yeasting slow food of the breads. These are relaxed sounds. Downtempo. Acoustic. Folk. Moody.

Thewrongbread: is a slice dedicated to a bakery in Antwerp that advertised, in both English and Flemish ‘the wrong bread’ (broodje verkeerd). These are sounds that are uptempo, rock, ironic, weird, long, abstract or in space.

Adamsasleep also has theryebread list. You can play his list on his page, or choose ‘You can also see what everyone has tagged “theryebread”’ to listen to all the rye tracks.
