Sat 14 Mar – Mammal, JERICCO

What a great night. Both bands were great onstage, and the sound was aswell. Got my copy of the Jericco EP signed, and Slaves (already had all the songs, just bought it to get it signed) signed too. Anyway on with the night....

Jericco entered with their instrumental title track, and then the singer walked on as they blasted into 'Always'. Their bassist was especially great, and looked like he was enjoying the show as much as everyone else. Some people in the crowd didn't respond to the singer asking them to come up the front, but I thought their music was amazing, and I'm glad I bought the EP. 'Sun' is an AWESOME song.

After a short warm up guitar solo, Mammal walked onstage and almost immediately kicked off with 'The Majority'. There was alot of crowd interaction and they were flawless in their sound as always. The setlist was good aswell, the only song I would have added was 'Think'. But besides that, they played 'Slaves', 'Nagasaki In Flames' and 'Smash The Pinata' so I was happy. This was one of the three shows which will become their next live CD/DVD. At only $12 a ticket, that's a fucking good deal!

So overall it was a great night, I found a new band, got to experience one of my favourite bands, got two shirts and two CDs signed. Let's just hope there's more shows like this in the future.

Mammal Jericco

What a year '08 has been for music. We've had some break ups, some reunions, and some new bands emerging from the underground. In no particular order, the best albums of 2008.....

Underoath - Lost In The Sound Of Separation
This is a great album. Very few bands have found the exact balance between intensity and melody, in the history of music. Soilwork found it on A Predator's Portrait. Opeth found it on My Arms, Your Hearse, and I think Underoath, after years of searching, have finally found it on this album. This is an intense ride of an album, and only stops to take a breather on Too Bright To See, Too Loud To Hear and Desolate Earth: The End Is Here. Spencer's scream just sounds awesome in this album. will be good to see where they go from here.
8.5/10
Best song: Desperate Times Desperate Measures

Ihsahn - AngL
While The Adversary lost itself trying too hard to be progressive, angL manages to keep the prog feel of the last album without losing any heaviness or darkness. From the atmospheric pump of Scarab, to the melancholic almost all acoustic feel of Threnody, to the Mikael Akerfeldt - Ihsahn duel (yes, that's right Opeth fans, he guests) of Unhealer, this is melodic progressive death black metal album to be thoroughly enjoyed. Don't quote me on that genre there.
8/10
Best song: Emancipation

36 Crazyfists - The Tide and Its Takers
OH NO IZ METALCOR I MUZT BE UNTR00 ohshitImean The fifth effort from our favourite Alaskan (yes you heard it right) metalcore quartet. TAIT is quite possibly 36CF's heaviest album yet, it is a combination of the nu metal of In the Skin, the emocore of Bitterness the Star and A Snow Capped Romance, and the outright straightforward metalcore of Rest Inside The Flames. Probably the best album for people wanting to get into this band, Candace Kucsulain from Walls of Jericho guests on Vast And Vague, and Adam Jackson of Twelve Tribes guests on Clear The Coast. Yes I know, finally some decent metalcore.
8/10
Best song: Clear The Coast

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Quite a surprise from Trent, suddenly releasing a new track called Discipline off his website, with a somewhat mysterious comment in the ID3 tag that says 'Goto www.nin.com May 5'. Out of nowhere, a new album was available to download, with another message saying 'Thankyou for the continued support over the years, this one's on me'. You could (and still can) download it for free. Yes, completely free. On matters of the actual album itself, the album holds six upbeat tracks and four slower / ambient tracks. 1,000,000, Letting You, Discipline, Echoplex, Head Down, and Demon Seed are the upbeat tracks, and are all great tracks, all the stuff you can usually expect from Trent. The other four, however, seem like throwaway tracks, with three of them being ambient / glitch segues, and the other being a slow, piano piece. As SputnikMusic said, "[It's] more like a collection of songs than an album. There is no real point to it".
7.5/10
Best song: 1,000,000

Mammal - The Majority
Maybe the best album of the year. It's hard not to like this album, with it's funk edged balls out rock. Mammal never fail to deliver, there are slow songs, fast songs, and Mr Devil, which is their take on Evidence by Faith No More. The Aural Underground pretty much sums up the band in one song, lyrically and musically. Mammal are one of the finest artists to emerge from Australia, and it will not be long before they join the likes of Karnivool, Cog, and The Butterfly Effect in the crazy, eclectic world that is the Australian rock scene.
9.5/10
Best song: Smash The Pinata

Cynic - Traced in Air
Wow. What an amazing album. I'm sure it came as a surprise to Cynic fans who, after Cynic's rebirth, thought they would write another Focus. Great album, by all means, but I'm glad they didn't. Traced In Air sees them mature and grow from their 1993 debut. The famous vocoder is weakened to give Paul Masvidal's vocals a bit more distinct human sound, and the amount of death vocals are decreased to about almost none. Cynic can hardly be considered a death metal band anymore, more now a progressive / technical metal band. Eight tracks of jazzy, atmospheric, ethereal, melodic metal.
9.5/10
Best song: The Unknown Guest

Opeth - Watershed
I was rather dissapointed with this album ... sure it has the blastbeat driven The Lotus Eater, and the old-school-prog-rock Porcelain Heart, but it seems like opeth are trying too hard to keep their progressive / death balance. An enjoyable album, but still not up to par considering their other releases. Also, at only seven tracks the album seems too short .... bonus track Derelict Herds should have been included.
7/10
Best song: The Lotus Eater

In Flames - A Sense Of Purpose
Inflamous. The songs are good material, but not good material for In Flames. At least Reroute to Remain had a tiny bit of energy and consistency left in it. not much else to say, if you go back and do another Colony then I'd listen. But for now, In Flames aren't really going anywhere.
6.5/10
Best song: Alias

Cult of Luna - Eternal Kingdom
A surprising move from Swedish post metal masters. Black Ice still delivers though, if you're expecting the good old stuff from AC/DC. What's different is that Brian Johnson uses some lower, more 'soul' sounding vocals, and Angus uses a slide on Stomy May Day. Death Magnetic is a pretty good album, considering the crappiness of the previous three albums. Although, if DM was released after Black, then everyone would think it was complete and utter shit. Metallica may not have completely return to their old form, but it's a good enough return for me. Lars Ulrich is repetitve and sometimes tedious, and there is a bit of cheesiness that pops up in the album now and then, but besides that, it's pretty impressive. Guests on this album include Jonas Renske, Daniel Gildenlow, Tom Englund, Hansi Kursch and many more. In this album, the guest singers are 'Foverers' which are a sort of gods who are survived by a machine, but have no feelings. They long to be alive again, so they decide to send a comet to planet Earth to inhabit it. Initially it works, but eventually humans become smart enough to fight and start wars, and eventually wipe themselves out. A few people survive to live on Mars, and the last human alive is given the Dream Sequencer, to see how Earth was made. A mix of acoustic, progressive, folky, and metal songs form this album, and it is a delight to listen to.
8.5/10
Best song: Liquid Eternity

The Amenta - n0n
One of the most dense albums in the history of metal, The Amenta combine fast and agressive death metal with industrial effects and ambience to create an extremely dark and layered album.

What more can I say. It's AC/DC. It rocks and rolls. It's Black Ice.

But how can so many people enjoy AC/DC when pretty much every song is simple, unoriginal and sounds the same? My friend, it's as simple as this.
It's not meant to be progressive, it's not meant to be experimental, it's not meant to be avant garde. It's just balls out rock and roll, which so many bands have forgot how to do today. AC/DC have survived over 30 years without straying too far from their genre.

From the awesome opening riff of Rock n Roll Train, to the somewhat funky outro of Decibel, this album is a full on rock n roll onslaught. Malcolm and Angus are at their best - pulling off heavy riffs, flowing riffs, funk like riffs, just being masters of the guitar. Phil and Cliff keep the beat going, with some nice, standout basslines and constant, tight drumming. And of course Brian is doing what he does best - singing and screaming along while even adding some soft soul singing, the idea of that coming from their current producer, Brendan O'Brien. A slide guitar is used in Stormy May Day - it made good use of during the outro.

Not much else to say about the album, Rock 'N Roll Train and Decibel are probably the best. AC/DC are one of the few bands who's songs sound pretty much the same over each album, and still they are entertaining. Of course, their huge impact on metal and rock is hard to ignore. I mean, come on. Is is that hard to enjoy a bit of mindless rock n roll every now and then? It seems to have been lost in the sometimes extremely pretentious 'technicality' and 'brutality' of todays music.

Rock n Roll Train
Skies on Fire
Big Jack
Anything Goes
War Machine
Smash N Grab
Spoilin for a Fight
Wheels
Decibel
Stormy May Day
She Likes Rock n Roll
Money Made
Rock n Roll Dream
Rockin All The Way
Black Ice

8.5/10

THUNDAH!!

When I heard Matt Barlow was returning, I absolutely couldn't wait for the new album. I prefer him over Tim Owens, who is a great singer but Matt matches Iced Earth more. And so now the album is here, I've only had a short few listens to it, so on with the review....

In Sacred Flames 1:26
The album starts with a 1 and a half minute intro, with is instrumental besides the choir like vocals in the background. No need for rating.

Behold The Wicked Child 5:38
Kicking in with a monster riff and Barlow's great vocals, this is a song which fits nicely for an album starter. An extended instrumental guitar section at the end after the last chorus finishes off the song well. 8/10

Minions Of The Wrath 2:06
A good song, with nice, heavy riffs and vocals, but the song could have definitely been longer. It cuts off quickly after the second chorus, and the song seems too short, could have been better. 6.5/10

The Revealing 2:40
This song bears a riff that could have come from the Something Wicked This Way Comes album, but is a lot slower. As it is faster than the previous song, it doesn't disappoint with it's length, but since the vocals stop at 1:10 and the rest of the song is instrumental, it once again could have been much better. 6.5/10

A Gift Or A Curse 5:34
Jon Schaffer lead vocals? Hmm, this could be interesting. The song is a soft, mid tempo one, with Jon doing quite well on vocals. About half way in, the song jumps in with a heavy riff and at double pace and keeps that pace for awhile, eventually going back into the original speed. Quite a good song, points for experimenting. 8/10

Crown Of The Fallen 2:48
Another one of the underlength songs, which makes good use of guitar and bass work, and sounds pretty much like the the third track, but also sounds like they just thought up the song too quickly. The vocals are good and so are the riffs, but it just seems they cut some songs too short. A miniature guitar solo at the end pulls it up a little. 7/10

The Dimension Gauntlet 3:12
This song begins with drum work and a riff that somewhat reminds me of Opeth, and then continues to execute a double kick / snare beat that hints at Opeth even more, if not one of Dream Theaters heavier songs, the song starts well but cuts the vocals half way just like The Revealing, which I hope won't happen again in the album. 6.5/10

I Walk Alone 4:00
Finally, a memorable song. One of the better songs on the album, Matt Barlow's vocals are strong, the riffs are chunky and the chorus is just great. The band showcases their ability to write great songs here, why didn't they try a bit harder with most of the other songs on the album? Great song, anyway. 8/10

Harbinger Of Fate 4:43
By the starting melody and slow drum beat, you'd expect this song to be one of those boring, dragging ballads .... it seems that way for the rest of the opening verse, but when the chorus kicks in, with it's strong vocals and the heavy but flowing bass and guitar melodies, I can safely say that while it is slow and may seem boring to the thrash fans, it's definitely not a song that had very little mind put to it. 7.5/10

Crucify The King 5:36
A slow, heavy Black Sabbath style riff kicks in to introduce the song, and stays around during most of the song. The song boasts some nice drum fills from Brent Smedley. Could have been a little faster, or a little shorter. 7/10

Sacrificial Kingdoms 3:58
The guitar, bass and drum work in this song kinda remind me of Dream Theater, one of the quite fast and technical songs. But on top of that, the vocals seem too slow and dull. Not much else to say. 7/10

Something Wicked Part III 4:31
Sounds a bit like a slower version of Minions Of The Wrath, besides the higher vocals. But wait .... what's this? Halfway through the song, a tempo change. Oh wait, it gets even slower. Sigh, wouldn't mind a Written On The Walls here right now. 6/10

Divide And Devour 3:15
Now this is what the album needs! Faster, thrashier songs. Looks like my prayers were answered. Even a song that is slightly more upbeat is enough to relieve from the frankly, quite repetitive and watered down songs that most of the album is made up of. Great chorus, this song. For being, like the only fast song, 9/10

Come What May 7:24
Let's end the album with a long ass prog off! I thought 'oh god, what now', when I saw the track length, but the song is actually impressive. Barlow is especially great on this track, the chorus is damn catchy. Not what I expected. 8.5/10

Epilogue 2:21
This outro is pretty useless, could have been more interesting. Again, no need to rate.

Well, I was trying to be positive but most of the songs are pretty disappointing. But you've got to expect this, bands have to change as they grow. The album was alot better than Framing Armageddon, which was probably their worst point, but still could have been better. I Walk Alone, Come What May, Behold The Wicked Child and Divide And Devour take the place as the album's best songs. Overall I give it 7/10.

Iced Earth
The Crucible Of Man
power metal thrash metal progressive metal

Sat 6 Sep – The 'Watershed' Tour

Copied from my blog.

It was bloody cold outside, but when I got inside it was the exact opposite. I arrived late, so I only caught a few songs off the supporting act, Virgin Black. I never really liked symphonic metal, but a couple of songs were impressive. I think one of them was 'Walk Without Limbs'.

When Opeth came on, I was standing at about the middle, and although I'm pretty short, I got a good view of the band. Axe and Per Wiberg were the most visible, due to being on a platform higher than the guitarists.

The opener was Heir Apparent, one of the better tracks off Watershed. I never thought much of Axe, the new drummer, but after this concert I was convinced that he was a worthy replacement for Martin Lopez. He hammered through their new and old tracks and kept constant throughout the show.

Next was Master's Apprentices, which came as a surprise to me because from what I've constantly been hearing, the band hate playing Deliverance live, bar the title track. Very well played.

Next was Baying Of The Hounds .... "Not all of these songs are about the devil. This one is about ... dogs". Ghost Of Perdition might have been better, but this I didn't mind.

Serenity Painted Death was next, which I would have honestly replaced with The Moor without a second thought. It was good live though, but there are better tracks off Still Life.

Damnation has to come in somewhere, and although I thought Hope Leaves or Death Whispered A Lullaby would have suited better, they played To Rid The Disease. A very mellow, 70's prog song.

"We haven't played this song live much. We're still practicing it. It starts kinda like this: (hums The Lotus Eater intro)"
...and the crowd exploded. Easily the best song from Watershed, the band blasted through all the sections of the song, they were tight and brilliant.

Next on the list is my personal favourite Opeth song, Bleak. The angelic chorus was great, but in the mellow bit, Mikael had some technical problems with his guitar. Axe improvised a did a short drum solo, and Fredrik did the same on guitar. Eventually the problem was fixed, and Mikael announced "And now for part two", and so the song continued.

As I hoped, the guys played Night and the Silent Water, which sits nicely on Opeth's best album, Morningrise. The normally whispered bit was growled, but otherwise the song stayed the same as the studio version. Great song, if not best played tonight.

Next was Deliverance, which was just chaotic. Fredrik and Mikael were great on this song, and as the last few minutes of the song went down, the lights followed every hit on Axe's double kick, which suited the song well.

The 'rock n roll thing' was done quickly after Night.... including "That guy [Axe] .... I forgot his name. Everybody scream out his name for me. 1, 2, 3..." "On the keyboards .... used to be a boy a long, long time ago. Now an old man"

The, umm .... final song of the night was Demon Of The Fall. Which was absolutely amazing. Most Opeth songs go down well live, but this song particularly kicks ass live. The crowd sung along with every word, and at the end, as usual, the crowd moaned when the band said that was their last song. They left the stage.

But was the night over? Nah. The guys walked back on, and the loudest crowd eruption of the night occured. "Sorry we left, Martin had to take a piss". And to finish one of the best concerts in a while off, they played The Drapery Falls. Yep, awesome song, alot better live.

And so they actually left this time, ending a great night. If Serenity Painted Death and To Rid The Disease were replaced with The Moor and Hope Leaves respectively, then it would have been a flawless setlist, but I shouldn't complain. I moved around alot in the crowd but I still saw alot of the band.

Opeth is
Martin 'Axe' Axenrot - Drums
Martin Mendez - Bass
Mikael Akerfeldt - Vocals, Guitar
Per Wiberg - Keyboards
Fredrik Akesson - Guitar

Spiralling to the ground below
Like autumn leaves left in the wind to fade....
