Pantha du Prince + Walls + This Aint No Disco + more at Cargo, London on 20 Feb 2010

Location: Cargo

PANTHA DU PRINCE + WALLS + THIS AINT NO DISCO + BLACK CAB SESSIONS DJ
FREE at Cargo – 20 February

Rough Trade's new signing is PANTHA DU PRINCE, the electronic musician and producer fusing house, techno, shoegazy electronica and psychedelic electro-acoustic soundscapes into music that is at once both beautiful and bewitching.

Previous releases have been bittersweet takes on techno, which appealed to both dancefloors and living rooms alike, and led to him becoming an in-demand remixer doing tracks for Depeche Mode, Animal Collective, Bloc Party, Phantom/Ghost, The Long Blondes and many others. On his new album, Pantha du Prince claims: music slumbers in all matter; any sound, even silence, is already music. The mission, then, must be to render audible what is unheard and unheard of: 'Black Noise', a frequency that is inaudible to man. 'Black noise' often presages natural disasters, earthquakes or floods; only some animals perceive this calm before the storm. 'black noise' is something archaic and earthy. His music balances precariously on the slippery threshold between art and nature, between techno and folklore, which lends it a certain spectral and intangible aspect..

WALLS is the amazing new Kompakt signing and collaboration between Sam Willis (Allez Allez) and Allesio (Banjo Or Freakout) Kompakt continue to embrace fusion of the rock / dance divide paved on the label by the likes of THE FIELD with one of the most exciting new
bands to emerge in the past year – WALLS. Having met in 2009 while
ALLEZ-ALLEZ were remixing BANJO OR FREAKOUT’s “Mr. No”, they quickly
realized that the natural combination of Alessio’s and guitar play
and haunting vocals (dubbed by Kompakt’s Michael Mayer as being
“drugged out rodents”) together with Willis’ emotive synth lines and
sample manipulation magic was a match made in heaven.
An immediately natural pairing, the duo started swapping sound files,
and very quickly with very little effort beautiful songs started to
emerge. Destined to be one of Kompakt’s most unparalleled releases in
their history, WALLS has a lack of concern for the boundaries of genre
distinction, but easily fit uniquely between the classic “sound of
Kompakt” and the bliss of Pop Ambient.

Taking influence from their now world renowned sessions, Black Cab Sessions DJs show their diverse musical influences on the decks, but add a party vibe to make things sweaty! Having DJd across Europe and America, they now bring their mix of soul, cumbia, hip hop, latin, house and everything else to satisfy another Saturday night crowd in London.

Free before 11pm
Queue-jumping entry available to the first 50 people to RSVP to Eat Your Own Ears via info@eatyourownears.com with the subject heading “Pantha”

R.T.T.O.S. feat. COLOUR HAZE (ger) vs. MONO (jpn) on 21 Feb 2010

Location: Arena

Roadtrip To Outta Space präsentiert ein ganz spezielles Package.

£14 + fee adv. from http://wegottickets.com/event/62464
Here's some bumpf on the old record. By Feb, the NEW ONE will be out! : Hailed as "almost impossibly majestic and beautiful" (NPR), Shearwater's Palo Santo (2007, Matador), a suite of ethereal but oddly disquieting art-rock songs loosely centered around the life and death of singer Christa Paffgen (aka Nico), marked the Texan quartet's debut on the national stage. The New York Times named the album one of the year's very best, and the band's singular combination of sonic abandon and restraint, spun around the soaring, otherworldly voice of part-time ornithologist Jonathan Meiburg - drew comparisons to late-period Talk Talk and both the lovely and anxious moments of Eno's early solo work. This year's much-anticipated Rook takes the band into realms both richer and stranger. Though a similarly haunted, elegaic mood - punctuated by flashes of dread and menace - pervades the album, Rook is its own animal, at once more accessible (the near-title track, "Rooks", anchored by Thor Harris' thunderous kick drum, a booming organ, and a stately trumpet line, could almost be mistaken for radio-friendly) and more accomplished than its predecessor, with a depth and grandeur that seem improbably packed into the album's tidy 35 minutes. Squalls of feedback have largely given way to sudden gusts of strings and woodwinds, though the band's fondness for unusual instrumentation remains intact - harp, hammer dulcimer, and a curiously carved metal box all take featured roles. Each song is a mini-epic, from the in-medias-res opening of "On the Death of the Waters" to the pounding (but drumless) urgency of "Leviathan, Bound", the abrupt rock of "Century Eyes", the crystalline depths and heights of "I Was a Cloud" and "The Snow Leopard", and the final, elegant flourish of "The Hunter's Star". Rook is unlike any other album you'll hear this year. It has the clarity and yearning ineffability of a waking dream, the strange beauty and internal logic of a fairy tale, and above all, evokes a vanishing world that may or may not be our own.

Soundwave 2010 on 1 Mar 2010

Location: Bassendean Oval

One of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, the pyramids have baffled archaeologists as to how those huge chunks of rock were assembled together some 2500 years ago.

Following its most successful year, we are hoping that in years from now, folks will look at the 2010 Soundwave line-up and wonder how so much ROCK from around the world was assembled together in 5 cities across Australia.

For 2010 we are particularly proud to have enticed one of rock’s all time legendary artists, FAITH NO MORE ; and one of today’s most talented and intriguing bands, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE to top the bill. Joining them will be indie legends and festival kings JANES ADDICTION, the kings of dark punk AFI and one of the hottest bands in the world, PARAMORE.

We are also thrilled to be graced by the presence of the newly reformed and legendary SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE and the hotly anticipated return of GET UP KIDS and ALEXISONFIRE.

In true SOUNDWAVE fashion there will be plenty of great new bands to discover as well old and new favourites.

Da da da daaaa. You already know what piece of music we’re talking about. There are not many symphonies where you can write down a few letters and know the reader will instantly know exactly what work you mean - and that is perhaps part of the reason why Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is simply one of the most famous pieces of music ever written. Here’s it is partnered with two of Beethoven’s lighter, more sprightly symphonies, Nos.1 and 8.

Club AC30 Presents Chapterhouse on 18 Mar 2010

Location: Scala

Chapterhouse were a British shoegazing band of the early 1990s, originally
from Reading, england. Formed in 1987 by Andrew Sherriff and Stephen Patman, the band began performing alongside Spacemen 3.

Chapterhouse took the unusual step of rehearsing and gigging for well over a year before recording even a demo tape. They were initially lumped in with
the British acid rock scene, a mistake hardly rectified by the band’s early
performances supporting the rather laid-back Spacemen 3. Chapterhouse
eventually escaped from that genre only to find themselves thrust amongst
the shoegazer groups of 1991 (with the likes of Lush, Ride, Moose and
Slowdive), so called because of the bands’ use of effects and walls of
noise.

In response to numerous requests over the years, Chapterhouse agreed to play live at Club AC30's Reverence on November 2009. The band have no intention of reforming but are doing this show to give fans of the band (old and new) another opportunity to see them live

TUNNG play a mesmerising mix of folky acoustics and busy electronica, overlaying electronic crackles, gorgeous harmonies, bewitching mantras and synthetic beats that are reminiscent of early Beta Band, 'The Wicker Man' soundtrack and Four Tet.

Last.fm Presents on 26 Mar 2010

Location: The Big Chill House

With over 18 months of killer gigs at Cargo, we are excited to announce a move to our new home The Big Chill House in Kings Cross! The venue has some great line ups coming up and we are really pleased to be a part of it. We have been invited down to choose some of the best artists from our ‘Hype’ charts and for our inaugural event we have an eclectic mix of synth pop, psychedelic electronica and a bit of disco for good measure! Check out what we have in store:

EMPEROR MACHINE: Andrew Meecham of Chicken Lips fame created this project in 2004. Signed to the legendary DC Recordings, The Emperor Machine was born out of Meecham’s desire to create a modern sound using vintage equipment and seventies production techniques. Resident Advisor say “The music of The Emperor Machine is inspired by sci-fi films, prog rock, electronic rock, disco, Delia Derbyshire and a heavy Can addiction” We can’t wait!

OU EST LE SWIMMING POOL – SINGLE LAUNCH PARTY: Aren’t we the lucky ones! It’s been a great year for the quartet since their forming, they’ve shared stages with the likes of Mr. Hudson, Cypress Hill and Reverend And The Makers as well as packing out their own gigs with their own brand of infectious pop. They have built up a reputation for being one of the most exciting live bands of the moment; their passionate live shows bursting with energy and chemistry as they jump about the stage.

LATE OF THE PIER DJ SET! They don’t really need an introduction, produced by Erol Alkan the band create beautifully catchy off-kilter electro pop. This year maybe a quiet year for them after their release of Blueberry so if you want to catch a glimpse of them we recommend you come down to this show! They will be first on so get down there early to see their special set of DIY electronica and weird grooves.

OFF MODENR COLLECTIVE: They put on the best parties on the South side of the river, and they will come north to show you how it’s done. Legendary warehouse parties as well as monthly events, art exhibitions + a magazine these guys have seen everyone from Crystal Fighters, Your Twenties & Theophilius London play their shows.

So, there you have it! Last.fm Presents kicking it in 2010!

James Yorkston at El Lokal, Zürich on 5 Apr 2010

Location: El Lokal

Woodpigeon + Laura Gibson + Withered Hand at Union Chapel, London on 6 May 2010

Location: Union Chapel

Calgary's WOODPIGEON's chamber-folk concoctions of banjo, glockenspiel, choir and Mark Hamilton's diffident vocals make for thoughtful melodious moments and joyous rock-outs. Combining the mystical comic-book fantasies of Mark's lyrics with the sparkling music of the band, comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and his delightful ilk aren't far wrong, setting Woodpigeon up to be the next great Canadian breakout band.

"**** It's bloody marvelous." -SUNDAY TIMES

"**** An inspiring meditation on exile and return." -THE GUARDIAN

"**** Seductive." -MOJO

"**** Melodic and affecting." -Q

"Delightful ... poetic and effortlessly gorgeous." -THE WORD

"Lovely ... relevant, modern and orchestral ... these are songs for a range of emotion." -THE NATIONAL POST

"Extravagant shows of brasses or strings spiral out ... Hamilton's light, resilient voice is tailor-made for mulling on the deceits and realities of what we see and do." -THE GLOBE AND MAIL

"Strings soar ... and voices blend like a cool breeze hitting the ocean mist ... Woodpigeon take flight with an ease that their name wouldn't make you believe." -EXCLAIM!

"Understated beauty with an unshakable longing ... meet your new indie folk heroes." -SUBBA-CULTCHA

"Hamilton's delightfully dour and lovelorn lyrics and sprightly, sweetly mellow music, makes the morse seem wholly palatable ... accomplished, quietly intelligent, playful and really rather enchanting." -BBC

"Rich acoustic chamber pop with quietly barbed lyrics." -UNCUT

"A tapestry of plaintive guitar, shuffling snare drums, twinkling glockenspiel and handclaps ... from swirling blizzard chamber-pop to hushed alt.country ... adrift in sweeping landscapes." -METRO

"A perfect balance of grandeur and intimacy, delight and melancholy. Treasury is a left-field gem ... you can’t help but fall in love with." -CHROMEWAVES

LAURA GIBSON new album Beasts of Seasons (out now) is nothing short of a masterpiece, both for its flawless and often haunting execution and for its inspired statements on the human experience. If it's the sonic equivalent of darkness and what may be lurking there, then Gibson's fragile voice and plaintively strummed guitar soon emerge as a flicker of light. It's a mesmerizing contrast, as the curtain rises for Gibson's beautifully gloomy and arresting meditations on life and death

WITHERED HAND is the work of one man from Edinburgh, Dan Willson. Despite a lyrical admission to listening to death metal bands, Dan makes pensive and pretty 'antifolk' music sprawling with all sorts of questions and quiet conversations while his Neil Young-ish voice mingles joyously with varied accompaniments including that of a banjo, harmonica and mandolin.
