Having just released single 'Another Tale From Another English Town' (video below) ahead of their upcoming second album, this will be one of the first chances to hear the band's new material in the live setting.

The theme for the first edition of the relaunched festival is « Forming Space », paying homage not only to the darkly majestic architecture of Atonal’s singular new home and its public re-emergence after years of abandonment, but also to that basic and vital impulse of all art, namely, the desire to give form to the void.

Location: St John-at-Hackney Church BOTW presents St John Sessions w/ Tim Hecker in London Over the past 10 years Canadian sound artist Tim Hecker has established himself as a master of atmosphere. Creating his drone-based tempests with a mixture of laptop, keyboard, tape and effects-drenched guitar, his music is often fundamentally serene despite the chill winds whipping across its surface. Hecker regularly displays a keen gift for melody, but it tends to remain subordinate to texture. That’s certainly true on his seventh album, Ravedeath, 1972 (or ninth, if you include his recordings as Jetone), but this time out there are differences in approach that cast his project in a refreshing, and even profound, new light. Having been recorded in a Reykjavik church, the album makes extensive use of pipe organ. Obaro Ejimiwe, aka Ghostpoet, laughs when he remembers how Gilles Peterson “took a risk on a random maverick” back in 2010 by signing him to the Radio 1 DJ’s Brownswood imprint. Within a year, that risk paid off: Ghostpoet’s debut album, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam, marked him out as one of the most distinct, uncategorisable and forward-thinking voices to emerge in British music this decade, and it was rewarded with a surprise Mercury Prize nomination in 2011. It was a sudden rise for a man who for whom news of a record deal came in the same week that he was made redundant from his office job in insurance. Two years on, having moved on from Brownswood to [PIAS], Ghostpoet’s creativity has blossomed even more. On his second album, Some Say I So I Say Light, he pushes even further in all directions than on Peanut Butter Blues, mixing the abstract and the concrete with uncanny skill. With his live shows causing a stir wherever they go we can’t wait to see what he has in store for us at the stunning Hackney Empire in October. Don’t sleep on the tickets!
