I've been trying to get Instruments to play for us for 2 years now but finally fate is on our side and they'll be down to play some of their amazing American Football inspired math pop. Continuing the math rock theme are Illness who make more sharper distorted songs in vein of Shellac and Charlottefield. Playing a special early gig are the very amazing Shield Your Eyes who will make an incredible Spiderland style racket. Make sure you arrive early!

Afrobeat Continuum on 5 Jul 2009

Location: Barden's Boudoir

AFROBEAT CONTINUUM

Broken Yolk is proud to launch ‘AFROBEAT CONTINUUM’. A festival night showcasing variations in new Afrobeat - A free spirited party where the atmosphere presides.

Heading the bill are NOMO, over from the US to present their brand new masterpiece Invisible Cities. We consider ourselves highly blessed that this is the only UK appearance of their European tour.

NOMO truly are a party band of the highest order. Spinning spiritual jazz, they have developed their own form of celebratory dance music and they're not unknown to perform it in marathon two-hour sets. Traveling with horns and guitars stuffed on top of their amps this eight-piece-sonic-arsenal pack a pretty heavy punch.

We’re thrilled to have Eardrum support. The band's heavy polyrhythmic business makes them one of the foremost exponents of a loose-based movement. They fuse the percussive elements of west Africa with the dub basslines of Jamaica alongside the electronic chaos of urban London.

The Bonsai Big Band root this night and there is certainly nothing small about their organic, meticulously clipped sound. They play with echoes of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea mingling with Ethiopiques Jazz Ensembles.

“Barman! One pint of Epic Juice please.”

Sunday 5th July, doors 7.30pm – 12.00am.

DJs ‘til close.

TV on the Radio + Noisettes at O2 Academy Brixton, London on 13 Jul 2009

Location: O2 Academy Brixton

TV ON THE RADIO’s career has established them as one of the most exciting and genuinely innovative bands to have emerged from the American musical underground in years. Winners of the Shortlist prize - The US equivalent of the Mercury music prize - and a devoted global fanbase.

Difficult to classify, their music is often described as art rock or post-punk, but is educated by a diverse spectrum of styles including freeform jazz and a cappella music, psychedelia and trip-hop, modern soul and classic ’90s indie rock, giving them a unique and original sound. The core members are Tunde Adebimpe (vocals, loops), David Andrew Sitek (guitars, keyboards, loops) and Kyp Malone (vocals, guitars, loops), but the band is accompanied by additional members when performing live.

TV On The Radio's loose approach to songwriting, recording and performing leaves an incredible amount of room for instrument-swapping and role reversals. Rather than rely on a stringent and stale guitars/bass/drums/vocals setup, the quintet often brings home-demoed sketches to the studio along with the attitude that a track needs to go through everyone's filter before it becomes a fully formed song.

of Montreal + Local Natives at Shepherds Bush Empire, London on 14 Jul 2009

Location: Shepherds Bush Empire

Of Montreal bring their consumate theatricality to the Shepherds Bush Empire this summer. Their songs soar and weave with energy and goodwill, daring anyone who hears them to walk away without a smile on their face. Listening to OF MONTREAL, you might think that singer Kevin Barnes is missing the angst gene. But the longer you listen, the more you start to realize that maybe missing the angst gene is a blessing. It allows Kevin to explore more fully his crazily creative ideas and to make wondrous music, drawing on influences from the Byrds or even the Mamas And The Papas; the group's songs are all sweet pop ditties, as suitable for campfire-singing as stage performance.

Mew - 18.45 - 19.05pm
Jane's Addiction - 19.25 - 20.40pm
NIN - 21.00 - 23.00pm
2) When do presales/normal tickets enter?

3) How much is beer in the O2?
£4.30 for a warm plastic pint.

NINE INCH NAILS have announced their only London show this summer at The O2 arena. The industrial rock legends will play the arena on Wednesday 15 July as part of their mammoth NINJA 2009 world tour. Enigmatic main man, Trent Reznor, has confirmed these will be the last NIN shows for some time, and that they will be "much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted" compared to last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour. "It's time to make NIN disappear for a while" he said.

Nine Inch Nails, who will also be appearing at Sonisphere festival in Knebworth in August will be bringing along some very special guests to open the show, in the form of Jane's Addiction. The LA rockers return to the UK after many years absence with the classic line up of Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins, to warm up the crowd with classics such as Mountain Song, Ocean Size and Been Caught Stealing.

Tickets go on sale on Friday 17 April at 9am.

ill-ec-tro-nic on 18 Jul 2009

Location: Concrete, The Hayward Gallery

8pm - 1am / Free Entry

Now into its fourth year, The ill-ec-tro-nic has a well established placed within the blogosphere, having built a reputation on helping to showcase the diversity to be found in electronic music and being just as keen on promoting music from little known artists as from some of the scene's more established names.

On Saturday July 18th, 'ill-ec-tro-nic Presents' will deliver a night of varied electronics to London's Southbank with sounds ranging from atmospheric electronica through techno, house, dubstep and the thriving UKF scene whilst maintaining the strong techno undercurrent that's never far from the top of The ill-ec-tro-nic's agenda.

The Village Orchestra plays live and as anyone familiar with his work will know, TVO has an arsenal of electronic weapons in his machines ranging from cerebral armchair electronica through to dancefloor bombs whilst always exhibiting an air of playful experimentation. With a new album just released on Highpoint Lowlife and still riding the wave of the critical acclaim he received for his The Dark is Rising EP on Stuffrecords earlier in the year, this rare London appearance for the talented producer is expected to be as varied as it is entertaining.

Via his alter-ego, RAW, Nanorhythm will already be known to The ill-ec-tro-nic readership and while a small number of his productions have been exposed to the world via the blog and through the Soliton Research netlabel (of sorts) that he co-runs, this is Nanorhythm's debut live set. He'd been working on a host of new productions and is looking forward to unleashing his brand of dub-infused techno minimalism on the crowd.

DJs for the night will be delivering a three-pronged attack in the form of Stuffrecords / Numbers DJ Goodhand whose sure to be bringing the funk with his glitched-up party tunes, ill-ec-tro-nic founder Langer who'll be spinning his latest 'dubtec' faves and ill-ec-tro-nic's Café 1001 regular Mark Solo who'll be dropping techno and house bombs in his uniquely animated style.

The Smittens, The Just Joans, One Happy Island, The Specific Heats and Maple Leaves on 20 Jul 2009

Location: Captain's Rest

EDIT - NOW MOVED TO THE KITCHEN BAR AT THE FLYING DUCK, 142 RENFIELD STREET, GLASGOW!

Tickets available from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/51054

We're very excited to announce the next of our Half My Heart Beats popshows. It's not for a while yet, but on Monday 20th July we will be hosting The Smittens and One Happy Island at The Flying Duck in Glasgow.

The name 'Half My Heart Beats' comes from a Smittens song, so that should give you an idea of how we feel about this band. The Smittens are a five-piece band from Burlington, Vermont and they play pop music that is guaranteed to make you smile.

I've been fortunate enough to see The Smittens play a few times now, in Glasgow last year, shortly afterwards at the Indietracks festival, and again at London Popfest in February '09. Each time they've lit up the place, and as well as being great songwriters and performers, they're among the nicest people you could hope to meet.

If it's possible, I'm even more excited about the fact that The Smittens will be joined by One Happy Island of Boston, MA. Their EP, Secret Party That The Other Party Doesn't Know About, was one of my favourite releases of 2008, released on gorgeous translucent blue vinyl on the WeePOP! label.

It may only have been a tantalising four songs long, but I'd go as far as to call opening song Temporary Tattoo an instant twee-pop classic, and the other three ain't half bad either. I happen to know there's a copy floating about the singles rack at Monorail, for the Glaswegians among you. If you've been to a Half My Heart Beats club night, chances are you've heard at least a bit of this great band.

---

Now added to the bill - The Specific Heats (Boston/Brooklyn) and Maple Leaves (Glasgow)! First band on at 7.30pm sharp!

The Smittens + One Happy Island + The Melting Ice Caps + more at The Wilmington Arms, London on 22 Jul 2009

Location: The Wilmington Arms

Get ready for the Indietracks indiepop festival with this cracking line up!

22 July @ The Wilmington Arms, Rosebery Avenue, Clerkenwell
Nearest tubes - Farringdon and Angel

First 40 tickets on sale at a bargain price of £5 - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/46922

The Smittens (Burlington, Vermont)
http://www.myspace.com/thesmittens

The Smittens are a five-piece indiepop band from Burlington, Vermont and like to think of themselves as a DIY twee pop explosion. Dana Kaplan, Colin Clary, David Zacharis, Holly Chagnon, and Max Andrucki, with help from the talented Emily Hilliard, switch up instruments, song-writing, and singing to create brilliantly lyrical and hyper-catchy pop songs of all colors, shapes and sizes. Formed on a whim at a party in 2002 by a group of popkids who wanted to make for their friends the kind of music they love, the Smittens have emerged as one of the country’s best-loved underground indiepop quintets, with headlining slots in the past year at the New England, New York, Toledo, and Athens Popfests. The bands third album The Coolest Thing About Love, mixed by Eric Masunaga, is out now, on Athens, Georgia’s indie institution Happy Happy Birthday To Me

One Happy Island (Boston, Massachusetts)
http://www.myspace.com/onehappyislandmusic

One Happy Island is an indiepop band from Boston with sloppy DIY tendencies. Chief exports include handclaps, ukulele strings, harmonicas, bittersweetly jangley ballads, furiously unfocused kazoo solos, and unashamed lo-fi recordings. It is the intention of Shannon, Rebecca, Clint, and Brad to take their songcraft and melodies to new levels of fun, fun, and fun.

The Melting Ice Caps (London, England)
http://www.myspace.com/themeltingicecaps - http://www.themeltingicecaps.co.uk/

"The solo guise of ex-Luxembourg singer David Shah, his love of filthy pop and throbbing synths are back, now with operatic vocals. Delicious. 8/10" - John Earls, Planet Sound on Teletext

"I wasn't quite prepared for the brilliance of the Melting Ice Caps. The name had fleetingly caught my attention not so long ago, but I'd not given much attention to the actual music. My loss, for the gig we witnessed tonight was full of utterly brilliant songs. David commanded the stage like a cross between a young Marc Almond and Jarvis Cocker and was utterly compelling to watch" - Pop'n Cherries

Standard Fare (Sheffield, England)
http://www.myspace.com/standardfare

The latest band to join the impressive roster of Thee SPC. They're a three piece fronted by Emma, who's soaring vocals are a mix of Isobel Campbell and Debbie Harry. Their debut release "Dancing" is a tale of broken relationships told to a delicious melody that's musically somewhere between the Lemonheads and Los Campesinos.

Stories for the Starlit Sky on 24 Jul 2009

Location: Regents Park Open Air Theatre

Three separate stories. Told on three separate summer nights.

Sneak through late night London, all around, people letting themselves
down or heading home, done with the day, thinking of bed and of breakfast,
oblivious to you, to us, hiding in a park at midnight, hurling tales of love and hope and courage at the sky. Voices soaring from between trees to paint tears on the face of the moon, words, like fire in the night, laughter exploding through the dark. The day not done, not yet, the air thick with magic on the cusp of tomorrow.

Daniel Kitson and Gavin Osborn return to Regents Park Open Air Theatre for
this ridiculously exciting notion. Born three years ago in giddy post show
euphoria, resurrected last year in a similar state of wonder and pushed through a wintery gloop of logistical troubles to this rather wonderful folly. The Idea - To conceive, write and perform, three separate stories for three separate summer shows, all starting at midnight and lasting a little over an hour. A twinkling thought is about to become a magical reality. All conceivable obstacles to success have been moved, avoided or obliterated save for one trifling concern.

Will anybody actually come to a park, at midnight, to listen to a story?

This Will Destroy You + New Century Classics at Drukarnia, Kraków on 28 Jul 2009

Location: Drukarnia

Oficjalny debiut zatytułowany po prostu „This Will Destroy You“ ukazał się pod koniec stycznia 2008 roku. W roli producenta wystapił John Congleton - odpowiedzialny za znakomite brzmienie takich grup jak Explosions In The Sky i Modest Mouse, a zarazem kompozytor, lider zespołu The Paper Chase i autor podkładów do kultowego programu Jackass emitowanego przez MTV. W październiku tego samego roku ukazał sie również split zrealizowany wspólnie z zespołem Lymyc Systym zatytułowany „Field Studies“. Tego lata zespół wyrusza w swoją czwartą europejską trasę koncertową, w ramach której odwiedzi dwa polskie miasta - Kraków i Gdynię. Koncert polecamy również uwadze wszystkich fanów brzmień spod znaku MOGWAI, SIGUR RÓS.

On the Saturday 1st August Field Day returns to Victoria Park for its third annual summer extravaganza. Field Day will be one of this summer’s essential festivals and with early bird tickets already sold out, you need to be quick off the mark to snap up yours before this event sells out.

Kicking off proceedings for 2009, Field Day is ecstatic to announce Mogwai as their headline act. The critically acclaimed Scottish rock group, formed by Stuart Braithwaite and Dominic Aitchison in 1995, have since become one of the most influential and best known names in post-rock, they have curated the ATP Festival, sold out The Albert Hall, London and last year released their sixth album 'The Hawk Is Howling'.

Drawing on influences from Joy Division, Pink Floyd, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and post-rock pioneers Slint, Mogwai are the masters of the soft/loud dynamic, as they create a wall of sound that reaches beyond the tumultuous guitars, discovering twinkling optimism in fragile instrumentation and sensitive synths. The lyric-free songs are awe-inspiring and yet accessible.

Domino Record’s amazing ambient electro wizard, Four Tet, will be returning to Field Day, after his mind-blowing performance at its inaugural event two years ago, to play his first live set in London in over a year. Four Tet will be playing new material as he mixes up gloriously rich synthesizer arpeggios; crisp clusters of disco percussion and melodic flourishes.

Former Arab Strap multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton will also be making an appearance at this year’s Field Day. As part of the now-defunct Falkirk duo, he spent 11 years peddling seedy, sweaty tales of cheap booze, late nights and sexual perversion, and his burgeoning solo career seems to be running along the same thematic lines. Working with numerous luminaries from the Glasgow scene, it’s Malcolm and his songs, however, which are the stars here, confirming Middleton's status as one of the best songwriters of his generation.

With the release of his fourth album, ‘When The Haar Rolls In’, at the end of last year, the softly spoken James Yorkston adds a wonderfully folkish element to Field Day’s line up that will complement its village fete vibe. And adding a large slice of funk to this year’s event is Brooklyn’s eccentric party starters Apes and Androids. With famed live performances involving cheerleaders, giant silver skulls and Korean drum circles, this is a band you don’t want to miss.

Touted as natural successors to the mantle currently held by the likes of Battles, Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem, Errors have been confirmed for a festival slot, plus Fennesz's pretty and melodic music, mixing bent instrumental pop, synth gurgles, white noise, ethereal vocal samples, serious Morricone vibes and much more will add to the spectacle, whilst Dubstep don DJ Skream will be laying down some deliciously jaw-wobbling bass.

Brought to you by London’s most adventurous and daring promoters - Eat Your Own Ears, Adventures In The Beetroot Field, Bugged Out! – Field Day will bring you the most cutting edge line up of bands and DJs in the 2009 Festival season. The heart of East London will be transformed into a Village Fete; 'Village Mentality', a Village Green area within the festival will supply the masses with some countrified fun and games away from sound systems and stages. Try your luck on the tombola, crack a few nuts on the coconut shy - or just sit on some haybales and stuff your face with homemade cake. Inspired by summer sports days and country fetes - Field Day's very own village green will host stalls and activities throughout the daytime, ranging from sack-racing, to whack-the-rat, Bowling for Bacon and lots more to be announced. Come along, have fun, eat baked goods, and as the country saying goes - "be like an ant in the days of summer”…

Malmöfestivalen on 14 Aug 2009

Location: Folkets Park

A culinary festival? A music festival? A culture festival? A folk festival? Lots of people try to categorise the Malmö Festival, but who’s right? The answer is… everyone.

The truth is that the Malmö Festival is all of these things, and a little more besides. Whether you’re a pop lover or a dance band fanatic, a gourmet or a fast-food aficionado, a slapstick enthusiast or a Bergman expert, you’re guaranteed to find something for you at the Malmö Festival.

Since 1985, there’s been more of a buzz in the streets and parks of Malmö for one week of the year, as the city is filled with music stages, market stalls, food vendors and crowds of people. The Malmö Festival is the highlight of the summer calendar for most of the locals. But it’s also a highlight for festivalgoers from further afield: the Malmö Festival is Sweden’s largest city festival, and everything – apart from the food – is free!

Its success is down to local support. The city’s businesses contribute most of the funding for the festival, and each year’s event proves to be a hit thanks to this backing and the hard work put in by the 6,000 or so people who help out. The programme has grown every year, with more artists, more events and more unique features.

Come and enjoy eight fun-packed days of festivities in Malmö!

Nicht verpassen: Die BootBooHook-Party im Mai!

______________________________

Stories for the Starlit Sky on 29 Aug 2009

Location: ICA

We Have Band are a do it yourself 3-piece that encompass the grooves of Talking Heads and the best bits of Hot Chip. It's very 80s and danceable, entering this side of the New Wave. They push it further by concentrating on the layering of synths and drums and are great at balancing pop hooks with exciting rhythms. They are one of the new generations of unsigned bands that still command plenty of attention within the music industry. Come and try on this colourful dream coat and see if it fits.

LIFEM: London International Festival of Exploratory Music on 4 Nov 2009

Location: Kings Place

LIFEM: London International Festival of Exploratory Music is a festival of inspired and boundary-expanding music explorations. Where else can you see UK minimalist avant chamber pop; Inuk snow songs, ice folk and throat singing from Canadian and Greenland Eskimos; old and new world music touching approaches from Ireland, Turkey, Iraq and China; the newest exotic electro Latin sounds from Brazil; Yiddish, Sephardic, old Klezmer and more from Israel, Serbia and Poland; and exquisite organic electronica from Japan? Plus a five-star audiovisual programme, all UK premieres, by award-winning artists?

This is definitely not your traditional jazz or world music festival. At LIFEM you will be surprised, excited, find out about music you have not seen and heard before.

LIFEM: Life with Music is so much more exciting!
