Hospitality on 12 Sep 2008

Location: Heaven

Thirteen might be unlucky for some but not for Hospitality. Having already hosted a dozen monumental parties at London superclub Heaven, the NHS are back in September with another tantalising line-up across five rooms.

In the main room we welcome one of the godfathers of drum & bass and presenter of the Drum & Bass Show on Radio One... Fabio. Representing Hospital will be head honcho London Elektricity, fresh from applying the finshing touches to an eagerly-anticipated new album. We've also got Welsh wizard High Contrast who'll be rinsing out his usual selection of uplifting dancefloor smashers and heavy hitting remixes. Next up, Cyantific comes complete with a big bag of plastic and award-winning skills on the decks. Wrapping up the main room line-up will be a heady combination of experience and youth in the shape of the legendary Randall and Heaven debutants Mistabishi and Culture Shock.

We bring you yet another thrilling agenda in room 2 as Marcus Intalex and his label Soul:r take the controls. Laying down the beats upstairs with Marcus will be the formidable combination of Break, Lynx and Alix Perez assisted by the vocal pairing of MC DRS and Kemo. Simply massive!

In room 3 there will be more dubstep pressure this time courtesy of the Dub Police label and DJs Caspa & Rusko, N-Type and The Others. We have the Jelly Jazz Soundsystem in room 4 and round two of the Stop The War On Vinyl bunker in room 5.

This is London's flagship d&b night and the only d&b night at Heaven.. don't sleep!

Darren Hanlon + Allo Darlin' on 15 Sep 2008

Location: The Troubadour

Fortuna POP! presents

Advance: £7 from We Got Tickets/Door: £8

DARREN HANLON
Darren Hanlon is an Australian singer/songwriter who has released three solo albums of finely crafted, folk-inspired pop songs on Candle Records. Before becoming a solo artist in 1999, he was a member of the Simpletons, and also contributed backing guitar and keyboards for the Lucksmiths.

Darren is known for his engagement with his audiences, through his down-to-earth storytelling at live gigs as well as his often charming lyrics. He has toured with Billy Bragg, Violent Femmes and this year supported The Magnetic Fields on all dates of their European tour. Following an appearance at the prestigious End Of The Road festival this intimate solo show at the Troubadour will be his last before he returns to Australia.

"Great storytelling... this is music about things that are real, heartfelt without being sentimental, poignant and playful where others might get syrupy sweet." (Popmatters)

http://www.darrenhanlon.com
http://www.myspace.com/darrenhanlon

ALLO DARLIN’
Uke-wielding indie-folkster Elizabeth Darling and her friends play their finely wrought, witty pop tunes, possibly including their downtrodden reworking of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long”. Indisputable girl-pop masterpieces then, akin to the self-deprecating writings of Kirsty Macoll, and bittersweet funny, like forgotten outtakes from Joni Mitchell’s Blue. EP out on WeePop now.
“If I don’t get to hear a whole album soon, I might just explode.” (RetroLofi)

This Ain't No Picnic 2008 on 27 Sep 2008

Location: King's College

This Ain't No Picnic is a new urban festival, brought to you by the folks who also run Smalltown America. We ran a series of alldayers from 2004 to 2006, and despite the change of name and change of venue our aim is still a simple one - we want to put on a fantastic weekend of live music, with bands you know and love and bands we think (and hope!) you'll come to know and love. Essentially, music that we believe in.

This year's event takes places on September 27th and 28th at King's College London, and will feature around 30 bands spread across two stages. There will also be a seperate bar (boasting spectacular views over the River Thames) with a film programme of some of our favourite punk rock and DIY music films. Your ticket also permits you to stay for the venue's regular clubnight after the live music finishes on Saturday, which goes on until 4am!

All proceeds from this event will be donated to charity. Our last alldayer raised £2000, which was split between Cancer Research UK and The Connection At St Martins.

Weekend and day tickets are available NOW from We Got Tickets.

Smalltown America is an independent record label that was established in 2001 to release the first Jetplane Landing album. We've grown somewhat since then, releasing records for a number of different artists as well as nine (and counting!) volumes of our critically-acclaimed Public Service Broadcast compilation series. We currently have staff based in both London and Derry. Please visit our website to find out more about what we do. Our motto always has and always will be that good music deserves to be heard, and that's all that really matters.

Brave Exhibitions presents on 28 Sep 2008

Location: Barden's Boudoir

SIXTEENS have contaminated underground clubs throughout Europe with tracks such as "Body Bag", "Figurative Character" and "Synthetic Blends", and now they're coming all the way from San Francisco to spread the poison in person. The duo, Veuve and Kristo, make electro with a genuine punk aesthetic, or music, as their label puts it, that "has the character of a nicely composed collage where one can see the jagged scissor marks along the edges of transposed magazine paper".

Bigmouth Fanzine described them as a cross between Voodoo priestesses and a Motown girl group... Twin sisters EVE BLACK / EVE WHITE, well-known in east London for their primitive electronic sound - a marriage of hot vocals with cold synths - will be setting the scene for the appearance of SIXTEENS.

Also on stage, making their debut performance on the 28th of September, is the bleak coldwave act NO KISSES, two DJs - DJ Secret Plot from the anti-music club The Liberty Snake, and DJ Chris Flatline from London's best italo-disco party, Futurebrain - who have stepped out from behind the decks to do desolate Valerie Dore covers and menace the audience with their amphetamine-fuelled originals.

Between the bands DR INFARKTAS, a founding member of Salta Kava and resident DJ at Futurebrain, will be spinning a selection of analogue sounds.

SIXTEENS Press:

"Here they come, making a noise like a marching band let loose in a telephone exchange, all stomps and clangs and the sound of electronics coming unsoldered at the seams. Sixteens are a (mostly) electronic garage band, devoted to the gentle act of conjuring up a right old racket from their array of black boxes and wires, and they do it with such aplomb you could almost believe that EBM had never been invented."

Two major premieres from Austrian composer Thomas Larcher (born in 1963), in whose music the voices of the past are glimpsed through the complexity of the modern world; sharp grooves jostle with Schoenbergian expressionism in music of angst and energy. Matthias Goerne joins the ensemble for the world premiere of a new song-cycle, while Larcher is the soloist in the UK premiere of his piano concerto Bose Zellen (Free Radicals). Larcher's works are framed by more serene works from Japanese master, Toru Takemitsu.

Location: Barbican Centre

“From the heart – may it go to the heart.” Beethoven’s inscription on the score of his ‘Solemn Mass’ stands as a profound wish for one of the greatest works of western sacred art. The composer’s visionary interpretation of divine glory and sinful mankind’s insignificance, forged against a background of personal turmoil and creative uncertainty, reveals the sublime. Prepare for an unforgettable spiritual and emotional journey under the inspired care of Jiří Bělohlávek and a great solo team, led by the incomparable Christine Brewer.

‘This was singing of rare charm and versatility, at both ends of a vast emotional spectrum.’

Apollo Voices

In 1884 Tchaikovsky visited a dying friend in Switzerland, carrying with him a copy of Lord Byron’s ‘Gothic’ verse-drama Manfred and reading it while deep in Alpine country. The combination of poetry and natural imagery fired Tchaikovsky’s imagination and fuelled tireless work on his ‘Manfred’ Symphony. “It seems to me, that it is the best of my compositions,” he wrote. Tonight’s concert includes the first performance of acclaimed young German composer Matthias Pintscher’s latest score, based on his evocative music theatre piece L’Espace dernier.

Styrofoam + Arthur and Martha at 229 great portland street, London on 15 Oct 2008

Location: 229 great portland street

Club Fandango and Happy Robots Records Presents

Styrofoam
Arthur and Martha
15th October 2008

Look up indie-tronica in the dictionary and there you’ll find Styrofoam, right next to the Postal Service and The Notwist. A perfect blend of guitars, pop hooks and beats, Styrofoam makes the world a better place.

Styrofoam is Arne Van Petegem and hails from Belgium. Originally on Berlin’s legendary Morr Music label he has collaborated with artists Lali Puna; Andrew Kenny (The American Analog Set); Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service), Bent Van Looy (Das Pop); and Alias.

His third album came out earlier this year on Nettwork and one could say it’s his most pop album yet, featuring guest vocals from Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eats World (who Styrofoam supported on a recent tour), Blake Hazzard and Josh Rouse.

“I basically wanted to make an uptempo pop album with big choruses to sing along to. I sort of figured I’d made enough sulky midtempo music for the rest of my life . . . I’m very interested in presenting all these weird sounds, bleeps etc. in a package that is quite accessible overall. But when you listen a little deeper, there is still a lot there to discover.

This is a very rare London headline show for Styrofoam, not to be missed.

Arthur and Martha are a thrift store electro pop duo from London. By bringing together their rag-tag collection of moogs, melodicas and an antique drum-machine, they penned songs for the happy robots to dance to.

Their debut single came out earlier this year on Happy Robots, “not unlike a British spin on The Postal Service, or Aphex Twin remixing the contents of NME’s seminal ‘C86’ tape. It’s lovely stuff and more than worthy of your time.” Said the NME and who are we to argue with them?

Iceland Airwaves Music Festival on 15 Oct 2008

Location: Reykjavík

It's 4 a.m. You've been to five cool clubs, seen ten great bands, made 15 new friends and fallen in love 20 times. You're tired. You're wired. You're ready to find a bed. You're ready to find the after-party. You can't believe you're here. You're already making plans to come back next year. And guess what? It's still Day One.

Since the first show held in 1999 (in an airplane hangar), Iceland Airwaves has become one of the premier showcases for new music – Icelandic and otherwise – in the world. It's been called "the most innovative music festival since CMJ" and "as responsible for all of Reykjavík's recent positive press as Björk herself".

Some of the world's most exciting artists, including Suede, The Flaming Lips, The Hives, Fatboy Slim, Sparta, and Thievery Corporation, have made the short hop from Europe or North America to share the stages with Iceland's finest talents: Sigur Rós, Gus Gus, Jagúar, Quarashi, Leaves, Trabant, Ulpa, Apparat Organ Quartet and many, many more. And when the live bands are finished, top DJs spin across the city until dawn.

But there's more to Airwaves than music. Reykjavík is possibly the perfect festival city – small enough to be welcoming, sophisticated enough to offer cultural, historical and nightlife diversions to rival cities ten times its size. Maybe 20. And it's surrounded by some of the most unique and astonishing natural beauty you're ever likely to see. Roll out of bed, hose the party remains out of your hair and hop a bus. Before you can remember what you did the night before, you're looking at geysers, waterfalls, lava fields – all the best that a volcanic island has to offer, including the world-famous Blue Lagoon, favorite soaking spot of the international hung-over glitterati. Mmm! You can really taste the hipster!

With inclusive package tours from major international gateways starting at less than you might expect to pay for airfare alone, getting neck deep in one of the hottest, coolest music festivals anywhere is maybe just a little too easy. Poke around the site, sign up for email updates, check the prices from your neck of the woods, and read about what's in store for 2003. Then come and join the party.

Welcome to Iceland. Welcome to Iceland Airwaves.

of Montreal at Koko, London on 16 Oct 2008

Location: Koko

Their songs soar and weave with energy and goodwill, daring anyone who hears them to walk away without a smile on their face. Listening to OF MONTREAL, you might think that singer Kevin Barnes is missing the angst gene. But the longer you listen, the more you start to realize that maybe missing the angst gene is a blessing. It allows Kevin to explore more fully his crazily creative ideas and to make wondrous music, drawing on influences from the Byrds or even the Mamas And The Papas; the group's songs are all sweet pop ditties, as suitable for campfire-singing as stage performance.

BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE
+ GUAPO

http://www.myspace.com/bohrenundderclubofgoreofficial

GORE STORY:

Founding BOHREN - members Thorsten Benning, Morten Gass, Reiner Henseleit and Robin Rodenberg started playing music together in 1988. This Pre - BOHREN - era featured bands like CHRONICAL DIARRHOEA, 7 INCH BOOTS and MACABRE FARMHOUSE which played a metal-based hardcore in different varietys. Driven by the idea of a more unique style of music, they formed BOHREN (german word for drilling) in 1992. As BOHREN they created an unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, BLACK SABBATH doom and down tuned AUTOPSY sounds. 1993 BOHREN recorded their debut 7..ep for Suggestion Records, in the same year they added ..& THE CLUB OF GORE.. to their name (to honour the dutch instrumental masters GORE). 1994 BOHREN released their first longplayer ..gore motel.., followed by ..midnight radio.. in 1995, both on Epistrophy Records. 1996 Reiner Henseleit left the band. In 1997 Christoph Clöser joined BOHREN and in this cast the band recorded the albums ..sunset mission.. (2000), ..black earth.. (2002) and ..geisterfaust.. (2005) for the Hamburg-based label WONDER.

ATP are very pleased to announce the sequel to last year’s fantastic RELEASE THE BATS Halloween event.

This year the event will take place at the same venue and the lineup looks like this:

SHELLAC
OM
LES SAVY FAV
WOODEN SHJIPS
PISSED JEANS
LIGHTNING BOLT
+ DJ ANDY WEATHERALL

Like last year, we’d love it if you could come dressed as something inspired by one of the bands (Perhaps you could simulate some Pissed Jeans? Or arrive in a…Shjip?) or as something spooky to help us with creating the Halloween mood.

The event will have a free flow between the upstairs and downstairs areas of the Forum so that everyone can move about throughout the evening.

Doors on the night will open at 6.00pm, tickets are priced at £22.50 in advance.

More info:

As Lightning Bolt will (of course) be playing on the floor of the forum and not on the stage, during their performance – which is the first of the night – for health and safety reasons, only the first 500 people in will be able to watch them from the floor. Everyone else in will need to watch from the balcony. Once they have finished and cleared away their equipment the event will become free-flow and you will be able to go upstairs or downstairs as you please.

On another note, we are aware that at last years Release The Bats there were issues with the volume of ticket collections, which may have delayed some people getting in. We would like to assure you that we have taken measures to resolve these issues for this year’s event and hope to avoid any excessive queuing.

We Got Tickets will be sending down a trained member of staff to be dedicated to their collections, ensuring everyone gains entry without delay. To help us in this process we ask you that you bring along your booking reference, the card you used to book with, and also if you can make sure you know and make note of which ticket agent you purchased your tickets through. Having all this information to hand when you reach the box office helps us a great deal to speed up your entry to the show!

Further details regarding ticket collection times to be announced closer to the event, so please check back for updates!

31st October 2008 - SHPONGLE LIVE in the UK

(Confirmed!)

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=130942061&blogID=361284300

Thats right... you can believe your eyes, its not a prank. The venue is booked, the deposit is down. Its happening. Preparations are already underway for Shpongle's first full LIVE performance in the UK which will be showcasing not only the old material played by a 7 piece band but also some of the new material that will be making up Shpongle's 4th Album. Its been talked about for 10 years, but now its happening. Its in the Roundhouse in London. It will be a concert type affair, not an all night party. We will soon begin selling tickets to this event. Standby for more information, put the date in your diary. You do NOT want to miss this. It will be an audio visual experience to tell your grandchildren about.

Ninja Tune Presents, The 20th Anniversary Of Solid Steel on 6 Nov 2008

Location: The End

Ninja Tune Presents Solid Steel 20th Anniversary

Date: 6th November 2008
Venue: The End, 18 West Central Street, London
Lineup: Jon More (Coldcut,) DJ Food & DK, Hexstatic, Bonobo, DJ Kentaro + very special Solid Guests.

Well blow me down. The venerable institution which is Solid Steel is twenty years old. Not only can it vote, it can nearly get into nightclubs.

Started by Coldcut as one of the best shows on the then-innovative pirate KISS FM, Solid Steel has always been about the finest, most surprising, most eclectic and all-round wonderous mixing. DJing as a kind of curation, as choreography, as art. As fun. The spirit of the radio show (run to this very day by the mighty DK) has also led to a series of critically-acclaimed and rather wonderful mix CDs. We’d call it a brand, or a lifestyle, if that didn’t cheapen it a bit.

So, anyway, to cut to the chase, to celebrate this momentous birthday, Ninja Tune move into the End for a night of everything you should expect from Solid Steel. Only more. The line-up includes one half of Coldcut (the sensei Jon More), DJ Food and DK with an example of their legendary 4 deck sets, Hexstatic with the musical madness, Bonobo and World DMC champion DJ Kentaro. All this and some very special Solid guests. Groovy…

A great soundsystem, a sprung floor and some of the finest DJs you’ll come across. It’ll be more than Solid. It’ll be sensational…

Hokaben on 8 Nov 2008

Location: 93 Feet East

Hokaben is a new music festival in the heart of London's east end at the 93ft East venue, Brick Lane. The idea is to have a festival in our capital city bringing together the weirdest / heaviest / craziest / most awesome underground bands on the planet under one roof with not a foppish indie band or yawnsome postrock band in sight. It’s all happening over the weekend of 7th, 8th & 9th November – so make sure you put that in your diaries. There’s only 750 tickets so get buying NOW music fans. The venue itself has 4 main areas – the main live room, a smaller live room, a more intimate bar and a large courtyard with benches for the smokers. It’s also smack-bang in Shoreditch so you have all the other restaurants and bars around there if you need a quiet pint and a break from the music. Take a look at the 93ft East website for more info on the venue. [SOURCE: Myspace]

Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) remained creatively active throughout his life.
Tanned Tin Castelló 2008 on 12 Nov 2008

Location: Teatre Principal

TANNED TIN Castelló 2008
10º aniversario

12-16 de Noviembre 2008

Tanned Tin: evento cultural

Murcof + Oren Marshall at Purcell Room, London on 20 Nov 2008

Location: Purcell Room

A new suite of music composed by the esteemed Mexican electronic composer Murcof whose distinctive hybrid of brooding electronics and classical sound sources is enriched by live strings and brass in a synchronised visual environment. This special commission allows Murcof to find full integration between all the elements in his sound, whether acoustic, analogue or digital. Strings, pixelations, brass, digital sweeps and video beams become a single whole in this new audiovisual composition. Collaborating with a viola, cellist and trombone players from Spanish classical ensemble Bcn216, Murcof will allow the unique qualities of acoustic instruments to mix with microbeats and vast digital atmospherics, letting tracks shift and mutate in a minimal environment. This will be an immersive experience.

Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) and Steve Reid on 20 Nov 2008

Location: Dingwalls

KIERAN HEBDEN (FOUR TET) and veteran jazz drummer STEVE REID

Steve Reid is the legendary drummer who in 1964 at 19 years of age played on Martha Reeves & the Vandellas’ ‘Dancing In The Street’, and subsequently went on to play with Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and James Brown (think about that for a moment), not to mention Fats Domino, Sun Ra, Peggy Lee, Chaka Khan, Dexter Gordon, Dionne Warwick and many, many more. Their unique live show blends Kieran's electronic experimentation with Steve Reid's laid back yet complex driving polyrhythms. Tonight’s show will see them playing new material from their forthcoming release, out on Domino in October.

A true pioneer of US left-field deep jazz, steeped in musical history. Steve Reid has played with the likes of Fela Kuti, James Brown, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Miles Davis and many more. Born in 1944, and cutting his first record under the direction of Quincy Jones in 1961, Steve’s career has crossed continents; he lived in Africa for 3 years, playing in numerous African bands for the governments of 10 of it’s nations. Steve Reid is forty years of living drum history where African rhythms and the harmonic explorations of John Coltrane come together. Steve grew up living next door to John Coltrane, worked in a department store with Ornette Coleman, and his son is the drummer for 50 Cent!

The Bays & Heritage Orchestra on 22 Nov 2008

Location: Royal Festival Hall

Two pioneering UK groups, recognised for their individual take on dance and orchestral music, come together in an adventurous multifaceted collaboration.

Masters of improvisation, The Bays, throw away every accepted notion about live music, creating electronic dance grooves on the spot to fit the moment. Extensive appearances on the Festival circuit are testament to their huge success. The mighty Heritage Orchestra, led by talented composer and conductor Jules Buckley, is one of the most exciting and radical young orchestras in the UK. 'A multi-limbed beast of a band, it revels in its power and grace yet is never hindered by it' (Time Out). They come fresh from selling out their Blade Runner concert, in which they performed the soundtrack of this Vangelis classic, at Royal Festival Hall as part of Massive Attack's Meltdown.

Put together their revolutionary attitudes and you are hit with a storm of a show, in which composers John Metcalfe and Simon Hale write new music live on stage inspired by The Bays improvised beats and loops, all remixed for the orchestra by Buckley. This is a high-wire act with no safety net, never to be played, heard or experienced the same way again.

Five Peace Band on 23 Nov 2008

Location: Royal Festival Hall

John McLaughlin and Chick Corea have created some of the most explosive electric jazz of all time. They join forces for the first time since they were an essential part of the seismic days, some 40 years ago, when Miles Davis brought the language of jazz into collision with the technology of rock and funk. Their own bands of the 1970s, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever, were further landmarks in the evolution of a post-acoustic vision of jazz. Reunited, they play music from past, present and future with a stellar band.

Kenny Garrett continues the Miles connection, the saxophonist from the trumpeter's latter-day bands; and Vinnie Colaiuta and Christian McBride are the drum and bass team providing irresistible power and groove.
