Choosing my favourite Tom Waits albums is a difficult task. Not only are these in my opinion Waits best albums, but also my most beloved albums ever. As much as I like Tom’s more experimental stuff, it’s no secret that his more blues orientated records are the ones I'm obsessed with. Every album on this list is heart-wrenching and I just love the way Waits conveys his loss.


1) Small Change - Every other Waits album may change place from time to time but this has always remained as my number 1. When listening to this album I can just see Tom in some seedy bar drinking his heart ache away. It’s so personal that I feel like I’m in the same bar and I can feel every moment of his pain.

2) Heartattack And Vine - This is all about romance, heartbreak, and past loves. It’s heavy on the blues and contains some of Tom’s finest ballads.
Best Track: Ruby's Arms (LP Version)

3) The Heart of Saturday Night - An album about loss and apathy ... what more could I want?! It’s nice to hear Tom’s voice in this - it’s before the heavy smoking and drinking had an effect on his vocal chords.
Best Track: Fumblin’ With The Blues

4) Blue Valentine - When I listen to this I can’t get the colour blue out of my head. It's all about booze and broads, sex and violence, laughs and heartbreak. The imagery in this album proves what a genius Waits is. It also contains the song that got me hooked on Tom - Whistlin' Past the Graveyard.
Best Track: Kentucky Avenue

5) Alice - I find this album the most relaxing record from Waits even though it is incredibly dark at times. It’s a dreamy masterpiece that examines psychological and moral deterioration of an individual suffering from a broken heart.
