This journal is somewhat late considering this album was released in November, but y'know i have a job so deal with it.

It's seemed like a long three years for Wizard fanatics since 2007's Witchcult Today but finally Jus Oborn and his Doom crew returned and as always, it's a beast. Kicking off with what is argubly one of their catchiest ever tunes Black Mass! The album rumbles through Sabbath esque riffs and crushing grooves that we've come to know and love from Wizard.

They know what their fans like, and like Motorhead and others before them, they rarley stray from what's made them. Patterns of Evil is a stand out track and the crushing 'Crypt of Drugula rounds the album off perfectley for the Dorest Doombringers.

Overall, another great album from Wizard who continue to prove why they are the benchmark for British Doom. Before the album was released Jus Oborn promised us a “a mindmelting hallucinogenic nightmare of drug paranoia and misanthropic deathwishes.” And they delivered. Well, would you expect anything less?

I'd been looking forward to this Doomtastic night for quite some time and on the whole it didn't disappoint.

I arrived just as The Gates of Slumber had started. Quality old school power trio with riffs straight from the Tony Iommi book of awesome riffs. The singer looked like Bill Bailey and the twin vocals with the heavily bearded Bassist were awesome, heavy as fuck my friends. (7/10)

Next were by far the highlights. Church of Misery were truly fucking excellent. I'd heard a few songs previously and expected some crazy shit as is usally the case with Japanese bands. The riffs were some of the most pyschadelic, crazy shit i've ever heard and Yoshiaki Negishi on vocals is either completley insane or does a great imperssion of a man who is completley insane. Considering the size of Academy 3 he had great stage presence and really got the crowd involved. Absolute Class. (10/10)

Headliners Cathedral didn't take long to set up which is always a nice bonus and Lee and the gangs took to the stage and fired straight into it. Don't get me wrong, i'm a big Lee Dorrian fan, for everything he's done in terms of 'Rise Above Records' and Cathedral are a great band but he really can't sing. His stage presence was good and despite a slow start it really got kicking a few tunes in. Solid band, a little sloppy at times but for me it would have been impossible for almost anyone to follow Misery. (8/10)

All in all a great night, picked myself up a Misery shirt and met the band when i went for a piss while Cathedral were on. Nice Fellas,

Crack the Skye - Mastodon





Rooster's boys Mastodon have done it again! This is the third album in a row i would consider my favourite album of that year. Leviathan was definitely my album of 2004 and same goes for Blood Mountain in 2006. I've seen this album crop up on most sane peoples lists, usually at number 1, and it deserves every accolade it gets. It's amazing on so many level, and to be honest it would be in my top ten simply for the epic beast that is 'The Czar'. Anyway, long live Mastodon and long live Crack The Skye. I shall forever treasure my signed copy.

This Album really blew me away last year, i was always big on Mastodon but this made me HUGE on Mastodon, absolutly adore it.


Lamb of God - Sacrament



The album that got me into extreme Metal, bought it on a wim once and it changed my whole outlook on Heavy Metal.

Down - Over the Under



I don't think it quite tops NOLA but it's still a brilliant album, reminds me of good times.

Celtic Frost - Monothiest



Possibly the best comeback album ever by one of the best heavy metal bands of all time.

Abgott - Artefact Of Madness



Discovering Abgott at a Turisas gig was one of the most refreshing Musical outlets i'd had in ages in 2007, and this album is pure Black Metal fury with an interesting technical twist

Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue



I, like all AIC fans were anxious about this come back without Layne but my fears were utterly destroyed when i heard this album, absolute perfection.

Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God



Possibly my favourite Heavy Metal band of the last few years, my only complaint would have been they didn't have one amazing album, until this was released, pure gold!


Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness



The best Black Metal album of this decade.


1349 - Hellfire



Pure, sonic, aggressive Black Metal.


Deicide - Scars Of The Crucifix



The first album that ever made me go 'Holy Shit!'


Entombed - Morning Star



My favourite Death Metal band ever, and although everyone discusses the early classics, this is a stone wall, top class Death Metal album from a band that have never lost steam.


Eyehategod - Confederacy Of Ruined Lives




Mastodon - Leviathan



I could have all Mastodon's albums in this journal but this would definitely be my second favourite, a sign of things to come!

Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked



The best Death Metal band of their generation releasing their Magnum Opus.


Opeth - Blackwater Park



A lot has been said about Opeth, but say what you want, this album is as close to progressive Metal perfection as there has ever been,


Tool - 10,000 Days



No list would be complete without a Tool album, and this album is, like all Tool albums, a Masterpiece.


Testament - The Formation Of Damnation



Apart from Megadeth. The 'Big 4' haven't released a great album in years, Testament still write amazing albums like this and they're not part of the so called Big 4? Bullshit,


Orange Goblin - Healing Through Fire



The best band us English have produced in years, top class stuff.


Wolf - Ravenous



It's difficult to find a band that play classic Heavy Metal without sounding like they're just ripping off Priest and Maiden, Wolf can do it, this album is top class.


Type O Negative - Dead Again



The 4 Dicks from Brooklyn never fail to impress and this was another fucking classic!

(3) People Who Write Down What They Like - The whole point of last.fm is to show people what you like you morons!!! When you write. 'Bands i love' then give us a long list, does it not occur to you that if i drift my eyes left i can see the fecking bands you like!

(4) People Who Write 'This Is My Real Top 50' - Your real top 50? You mean to tell me some people tacticlly plan their top 50? It's supposed to be a representation of what you've been listening to, we can check 'last 7 days' or 'last 3 months' if we're really that interested in how your tastes have change

(5) People Who Write On A Page In Their Own Langauge - What is the point!? If you're from Indonesia, no one can fucking tell what you're saying apart from the 4 other users from Indonesia! You may have a valid point but we can't tell!

(6) Morons Who Attempt English - Even worse then the person who writes in his own langauge, is the tit who attempts it and looks like nothing but an incoherent ass. For example, the nonsensical fellow TORERO89 wrote this in my shoutbox.

(8) People Who Get Hyped About Tags and Pictures - Who cares? If you think Job For A Cowboy are Death Metal, what does it matter if other people think it's Deathcore!? All it shows is you're insecure about what genres you like, what you think will perceive you as. And the photo? Does it really affect you that much? Infact, i think there's even a group dedicated to it, sad stuff.

Well, another year, another Bloodstock Open Air, and once again it seems to have flown by. Firstly, i'd just like to mention my suprise at how large the festival has got over a year. Becoming the Wacken of England? I think so. Also, nice weather all weekend? In England?

Thursday

On the thursday i managed to catch that Comedian who was actually pretty funny, all right he used a lot of name and band dropping to get cheap cheers, but besides that, his stuff was actually pretty funny, unfortunatly i've totally forgotten his name. After that i grabbed a beer and went to catch The Fuel Girls. They're some sexy ladies, although the reaction from some of the dweebs in the crowds made me think they'd never seen a breast in the flesh before, and looking around, they probably haven't.

Friday

Anyway, onto what really matters, the bands. After a late first night i couldn't actually be arsed catching Die Apokalytischen Reiter, and i'm glad, a couple of my friends said they were utterly generic and shite so sitting on my arse seemed the better option.

On the way i popped into the unsigned stage to catch Bison Hammer as my friend knows one of them. Anyway they were alright actually, they sounded a tad generic but they reminded me of Lamb Of God a little, impressive and i could see them going places.(7/10)

Next i caught Thrashers Municipal Waste. Now i'm not a huge fan of this band, or American Thrash in general but i can't deny they put on a great show. Amazing pits and some really good sing along songs, behind the crazy surfing and pits, i find the music rather dull and repetetive. Also, the whole crowd surfing record was a complete lie, there's no way we broke that record. Anyway, great atmosphere, average music. (8/10)

Next came a totally different proposition, Katatonia. I'm a fan of their early stuff, but their later releases aren't really my cup of tea, and unfortunatly, like most bands who change their sound, they totally ignored their older material, which live i found dull, his voice is also rather poor. (6/10)

Next came Teutonic Thrash legends Sodom, their first UK gig in 20 years. And wow it was memorable. Finally i got to see Sodom, and it was worth the wait, a sonic blast into the face, thrashing through classics like 'Agent Orange.' I didn't think a lot of the audience knew many of the songs but it didn't matter to me, definitely one of my highlights of the weekend (9/10)

NWOBHM legends Saxon were next. Before Bloodstock i had a feeling Saxon would steal the show. They didn't quite but they certainly were awesome. Saxon have been on a roll of late, and classics like 'Wheels Of Steel' only speed their momentum up,Biff is a great showman and a top vocalist, i got the feeling he thought Saxon should be higher up, and he also took a moment to bash Kerrang. Saxon were some great first day Heavy Metal Thunder! (8/10)

Next were co headliners Arch Enemy. A band that previously i've found to be extremely tedious live, and once again, they didn't disappoint. Their sound is poor and their show dull. Michael Amott's guitar work being mostly the only saviour for these dullards, the only reason i can fathom that these are so big, is the novelty of a female vocalist, who live sounds not half as good as she does on record, only the track 'We Will Rise' appeared to get a great reaction. (5/10)

Final band of the Friday night were British Death Legends Carcass. I was absolutly stoked to see Carcass. I saw them at Damnaiton last year, and although they put on a great show the gig at Damnation was crammped, crowd and stage. This time, there was no such problem, Carcass stormed onto the stage and opened with one of my favourite songs of all time 'Corporal Jigsaw Quandatory'. At Damnation they struck me as a little rusty, but this time there was so sign of rust, Jeff Walker is a commanding presence on stage and once again it was heart warming to see Ken Own come on and do a drum solo, which has definitely improved since Damnation, possibly my only complaint was the set seemed a ltitle short. All the same, Carcass fucking owned the Friday! (9/10)


Saturday

Saturday morning, hangover central, it was time for some Heavy fuckin Metal, and who better then Swedish Metallers Wolf. I've been a fan for a while now and their latest album 'Ravenous' is a fucking beast. They took to the stage as if they were world betters and blistered into the set with 'Speed On.' They fucked up a few times but i wasn't arsed, they put on a great show and it was an awesome day to start the Swedish Saturday. (8/10)

Next up, The Haunted. My main reason for wanting to catch these was the fact two of them were in At The Gates. And man was i disappointed, i was expecting some intense melodic death metal, instead i got some second rate metalcore garbage, some of the riffs had the old Gothenburg magic but on the whole i found them the biggest disappointment of the weekend, the singer being a particurlarly annoying feature of the band, if you're going to rip off Killswitch Engage at least try harder. (3/10)

Next came one of the most exciting prospects of the weekend, Entombed. With classic albums like Left Hand Path i was fucking stoked to finally catch the Swedish legends, and unlike The Haunted, they didnt disappoint. They were ballsy fucking old school Swedish Death Metal, they nailed me to the fucking wall. And LG Petrov is one of the most compelling frontmen i've ever seen, a great voice and he seems like a genuine nice guy, even after he accidently spat on the security guy. Absolutly unmissable! (10/10)

Doom Legends Candlemass were next to take to the stage. I had a feeling their brand of progressive, drawn out Doom might not be a great proposition on a boiling hot Saturday afternoon, and unfortunatly i was right. Although they wern't bad by any means, i just felt that their music fell like a wet sack of shit. The droning riffs didn't sit well in the sweltering heat, also, frontman Robert Lowe, i can only describe as bizarre, and well, slightly embarassing, the only realy highlight for me was Solitude. (6/10)

Enslaved were next, and another band i was excited about. Again i felt their brand of progressive Black Metal might sink a bit in the Summer afternoon, but for me there was no such problem. They blasted through their set, Ice Dale looking the epitemy of a rock star, and Grutles voice sounding as good as ever, they blasted through tunes from Isa, Ruun etc. Top Notch Norwegian Black Metal (8/10)

The Second German Thrashers of the weekend Kreator were on next, i wasn't quite excited as Kreator as i was about Sodom but all the same i was fucking mad for it! No one does screaming, ballsy thrash metal quite like Kreator, and no one quite gets a crowd feeling 'Agressive' like Mille Petrozza, he spits his words with venom and sends the pits fucking crazy, some of the craziest pits you'll ever seen, and classics like 'Pleasure To Kill' go down a storm. The ending of 'Flag Of Hate' was a brutal and insane offering and the crowd went wild, Kreator tore Bloodstock a new arse hole (9/10)

I skipped that garbage Apocalyptica and all that Power Metal faggotory to watch London Death Metallers The Rotted (formally Gorerotted. Top notch Brutal Death Metal, mostly from their awesome new album Get Dead Or Died Trying. It was a brutal show and the crowd went fucking sick for old tunes like Only Tools And Corpses. (7/10)

Now came the Saturdays headliner, and what turned out to be a pretty controversial end to the Saturday. First of all, i'm not a Cradle Of Filth fan, however i'm also not one of the bashers who holds some bizarre hatred towards them. I was infact quite looking forward to Cradle as i heard they'd put on a good stage show, turns out i was wrong, unless they left before something was actually going to happen, my second disappointment was how atrocious they sounded live. Now i know Dani Filth and his vocals have become somewhat of a novelty but i was actually looking forward to hearing him, unfortunatly he just screeched incoherently into the mic before occasionally grumbling into it, mind numbingly dull, also i was expecting a great stage presence, instead he just danced around like he was in Blink 182. Then the event came, a gobstopper (apparently) hit the Guitarist and they abruptly left. Whoever threw it was undoubtedly a dick and should have been beaten, i stil think Cradle should have manned up and tried to finish the set, iv seen bands do it before, and don't give me this "security" shit, if they wanted to finish that set for the true fans of their band who'd paid and stood waiting, they could have, what a load of shit. (1/10)

Sunday

Sunday began for me with some Finnish Battle Metal! I'm not a huge Turisas fan, it's kinda a little too gimmicky for me, however what a great fucking show! A real party festival band and a perfect band for Bloodstock. They partied through tunes likeHolmgard and Beyond and Boney M cover Rasputin and the reaction they got was better then any of the headliners i heard. Sure the crowd was full of embarassing dicks dressed like viking faggots but still, what a show, great crowd interaction, my only complaint is they dragged out the end too much, giving themselves an encore etc. Definitely one of the best bands of the weekend. (9/10)
