Fri 2 May – Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Keep of Kalessin

It was a pretty badass show. UndeadKing has the setlist: http://www.last.fm/user/Undead-King/journal/2008/05/3/716150/

so I'll talk about the show. Keep of Kalessin had a pretty good show, the pits and crowdsurfing got started by their second song, Crown of the Kings. I went crowdsurfing during that one, and lost my pope hat. Their set was rather short, but enjoyable nonetheless.

A lot of people were there specifically to see Behemoth, which is understandable. They opened with Slaves Shall Serve, and everyone went insane. A pit opened up right next to me, so I had to run away. These guys are just too damn big for me to mosh with. Granted, I was quite a target with my pope costume. For most of their set, I was crushed in the crowd, unable to breathe. This is, however, the best possible way to experience heavy metal. It's disconcerting to hear people singing along with Nergal, though.

Dimmu Borgir's set was good, but really damn long. There was a 30-minute break between the two bands, but that was okay because we all had to recover from Behemoth. When Dimmu started, they had these two priests walk onto the stage waving incense-burners, and they opened with Spellbound by the Devil. I felt like I should've been onstage with them, but whatever. Their set was really ridiculously long, almost 1 1/2 hours.

All in all, it was a great show. I got my hat back, by the way.

It's hard to explain just how horrible Year Zero is. I can't believe Nine Inch Nails are popular. This is SO BAD.
It sounds like what would happen if Fall Out Boy had gay babies with Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park and Fort Minor), and then bashed said babies on some 'industrial' concrete a couple times. Envision the aural accompaniment to said actions, and you'll know how lame Year Zero is. Wow.
God, this is horrible.

I'm going to go listen to some Boston now.

Ok. I'm going to rate every track in my iTunes libraries. That's 2980 tracks on the desktop, and over 4000 on the laptop. It'll be awhile. Probably around two weeks of actual listening. It'll be fun!
Just thought I should say it.

So, there's this band called Shade Empire. They do melodic/symphonic black metal. It sounds beautiful. Their older album, Sinthetic, is superior to their newer one, Intoxicate O.S.. However, they're both awesome, and definitely worth listening to.
Amon Amarth's new album, With Oden On Our Side sounds rather phenomenal as well. Crazy Vikings...
In other news, Passenger is a load of crappy metalcore that tries to sound like Meshuggah but fails. Man, they sound awful.
Additionally, Finntroll rocks, as does grime. Very different, mind you. Grime is like rap but better, because it sounds kind of like dnb if it's done right.
Finally, The Berzerker is ridiculous. Good, but ridiculous. Gabber times grindcore times death metal. Speaking of heavy...

Sat 3 Mar – Ayria, The Crüxshadows, Angelspit
Well, this event started off with a local band (whom I've forgotten the name of). Their set was...unremarkable. Next came Angelspit who did an excellent job of warming up the audience. Their set was cool, too. 100% live is very fun.
Ayria came next. Their set was a bit long, but it was pretty much a heap of awesome.
Then came The Cruxshadows. They're on tour for their new CD, DreamCypher, which is phenomenal. And The Cruxshadows are, in fact, amazing live. Rogue did all sorts of fun things, and my friends and I seemed to be right next to him whenever he went out in the crowd (which was entertainingly often).
If The Cruxshadows are playing anywhere near you, buy tickets. You will not be disappointed, pretty much no matter your musical tastes.
