English Singles are back with ace new crash-pop EP
Second Slumberland single for this great Sacramento DIY band. Featuring members of local legends The Bananas, Nar and Bright Ideas, English Singles mine a rich tradition of DIY pop that stretches from Swell Maps and The Television Personalities through to The McTells and The Sea Lions. Three scratchy and home-made (but NOT lo-fi!) sings that take pop back to the basics of catchy tunes, urgent guitars and sing-along choruses.

Kids On A Crime Spree release new single
Oakland's Kids On A Crime Spree are back with this first new record since their "We Love You So Bad" EP of 2011. The new single "Creep The Creeps" has been a staple of the group's live set for a while now, and we're excited to finally have it on vinyl. It's punchy, handclap-driven power-pop of the very highest order, with a driving dance beat, golden 60s pop chops with Ramones-y fuzz drive. "New Ex-Boyfriend" on the flip adds some minor-key drama and echoed surf guitar leads to the mix. It's a heady combination, and points to new directions for exploration.

Wax Idols' "Discipline & Desire" out now
We are VERY excited to be able to announce that the excellent new album from Oakland's Wax Idols is available in stores today. We were big fans of the group's preview "No Future" album, and this new record builds on it in every possible way. Epic, emotional post-punk with ace song-writing and intense, passionate playing. Dramatic stuff, but never sacrificing melody for mere attack or atmosphere. While early 80s Siouxsie And The Banshees and 4AD are decent reference points, the song-writing is all Wax Idols and they bring a very modern sensibility, along with sterling production help from Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon). To commemorate and help finance their Spring 2012 reunion, Black Tambourine decided to do some recording, and this tribute to one of their favorite inspirations, Ramones, is the result. Four great tunes spread across two 7" vinyl records, OneTwoThreeFour is a fine addition to the band's catalog. A lot of thought went into these interpretations, each one bearing the band's unique stamp. From the chaotic noise-pop blur of "I Want You Around" to the dreamy version of "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend", these songs could have fit in perfectly on any of Black Tambourine's original records. *** Sea Lions deliver long-awaited debut album ***
When Adrian Pillado formed Sea Lions in 2007, he wasn't really sure what it would be. His influences were something of a musical snowstorm, involving Crass, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Syd Barrett, Lou Reed, Orange Juice, and Beat Happening. In the beginning, it was just Adrian singing and playing guitar, with his best friend Pat playing drums. Both had a history in Oxnard's D.I.Y. punk scene where a group of young kids had been listening to a lot of K, Postcard, Sarah, Creation, and (naturally) Slumberland records, and bands that were previously more into punk and noise started working in these new influences. The early days of Sea Lions were a learning curve, Adrian and Pat crashing and bashing their way through songs, often stumbling upon something beautiful in the process. Eventually they added added a second guitarist, and a bass player… and they killed. Adrian had really grown as a songwriter, the songs were still shambolic, but they were also assertive and direct.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sea Lions But Were Afraid To Ask is without question the next giant step forward for the band. A brief instrumental intro gracefully leads you into the galloping proper album opener, "I Should be Sleeping." The production throughout is shimmering, and assured. Something as simple as the backing "oohs" on the song "Grown Up," become transcendent. Elsewhere, tunes like "Tell You," "Rainfall" and "A Cloud" are pure pop goodness, pairing furiously-strummed guitars with stomping rhythms and Adrian's deep croon. Further, a song like "As Times Change" reveals a confident band that knows how to mine their record collections (particularly their 13th Floor Elevators, and Love records) and turn all of those sounds into something entirely their own.

All of this adds to the unique yet familiar sound that Sea Lions have cleverly cultivated. Bustling with nervous energy and the desire to communicate, Sea Lions share a sense of urgency with great pop forebears like Subway Sect and Television Personalities -- earnestness combined with pop knowledge and punk suss. What Sea Lions capture, where so many young bands try and fail, is not simply the sound of young Oxnard, it's the sound of youth everywhere: bored, underemployed, and wishing your life was something else. *** Big Troubles release second single from "Romantic Comedy" ***
Led by two very gifted singer/song-writers in Alex Craig and Ian Drennan, Big Troubles are that rare beast: a band with two distinctive musical voices that smoothly mesh to create one integrated personality. As children of the 00's they're lucky enough to have a vast history of pop and indie rock to draw upon. Like the best of their peers they're omnivorous musical consumers, as enamored of classic Brit Pop gems as they are of 90s slacker indie rock and 80s Paisley Underground pop. Early recordings by the pair were of the lo-fi home recorded variety, but over time they've grown (with the addition of drummer Sam Franklin and bassist Luka Usmiani) into a full four piece band to more fully realize their tunes.

Their first album "Worry" and its attendant singles were excellent fuzz pop records in their own right, but to make their new record the band took the step of bringing in help in the form of the legendary Mitch Easter, whose resume includes stone cold classics from the likes of REM, Pavement and his own Let's Active. With Mr. Easter's expert engineering help, Big Troubles' fantastic new album Romantic Comedy is a masterpiece of modern pop; a perfect balance of grit and polish, gorgeous guitar sounds and angelic vocals, underpinned by a set of superb songs.

She Smiles For Pictures is the second single from Romantic Comedy, following the excellent "Sad Girls." Featuring lead vocals from Ian, "She Smiles For Pictures" is a gorgeous piece of power-pop, fueled by ringing guitars, an earworm of a guitar lead and Luka & Sam's propulsive rhythm section. Ian's vocal melody is a total winner, the upbeat cadences belying the rather dark lyrics. 2:53 of pop perfection. "Polyommatus Blue" on the flip is another gem. A mid-tempo tune that recalls the lost mid-period Creation pop of groups like 18 Wheeler and pre-Screamadelica Primal Scream, it's another fine slice of classic guitar jangle, and exclusive to this single. Revelations is the latest single from Devon Williams' excellent Euphoria album. A gorgeous piece of summertime soft pop, "Revelations" brings to mind a studio meeting of Brian Wilson and Curt Boettcher, with it's soaring harmonies, strings and woodwinds. Pure audio perfection, and all in the service of a brilliant, timeless tune.

We've added a special unreleased bonus track to this digital-only single. Violens' remix of "Tower of Thought" is a note-perfect slice of 1992-style breakbeat hardcore, sounding for all the world like a lost classic on XL or Moving Shadow. Superb.

*** Manatee show their other side ***
Oakland's mysterious Manatee are back, following up their Indecision single with this sharp blast of punk energy. Recorded in the same marathon session as the aforementioned single, these two tunes couldn't be any more different. Where that last single flirted with power-pop and late Replacements melodic rock inflected with shoegaze sonics, this single is straight up punk rock. Featuring two concise songs that each happen to clock in at 2:13, the Single Payer Class War flexi wear's it's heart on its sleeve (literally) with art that pays homage to The Dils classic Dangerhouse single.

"Mr Super" is the poppier of the pair, bringing to mind mid-80s SoCal pop-punk in the same way that label-mates Terry Malts do. Powered along by the pummeling rhythm section of Nik (bass) and Chris (drums), "Mr Super" is either about our president or a super hero, only singer Keith knows for sure. "Chased By Anderson Cooper" is a nightmare brought to life, the frantic hardcore rush mirroring the protagonist's panic. Both songs are packed with guitar crunch galore, often exploding into shards of uncontrolled feedback. Not too bad for a bunch of old men.

We've been hoping to get these two songs out to you for a while, and finally found just the right format in the recently-revived 7" flexi. It's our first flexi in years, and we couldn't think of a release better suited to the format.

QRD – What release that you’ve done was the most important & special to you personally?

Mike – Hmm, hard to narrow it down. Probably The Aislers Set’s “The Last Match.” Linton had already put out quite a bit of stuff on SLR with The Aislers & Henry’s Dress, & “The Last Match” just floored me. The band had been playing the songs out a bit so I was familiar enough with them, but the finished recordings just summed up everything I thought a great pop record should be.

QRD – Why do you think labels are still important to artists?

Mike – An artist’s job is to make art & not necessarily be bogged down in the minutiae of selling it. A label that an artist is comfortable with can really free them up to concentrate on what they do best.

QRD – In 20 years what do you think/hope your label will be known/remembered for?

Mike – Never following trends, putting out consistently interesting/entertaining records. I’m a big fan of being entertained, not every record need to be “difficult” to be of value.

*** Spectrals release stellar debut album ***
"Bad Penny" is the debut album from Spectrals aka 21 year old Louis Jones. Mixing ingredients of pop, soul, doo wop, and a garage rock ballad, it sounds vintage but current, while the Yorkshire lilt in his voice (a result of his hometown, Heckmondwike) places him firmly in the UK, rather than Detroit. Inspired by the music he grew up listening to as a child, from the Rolling Stones (the only CD's his mum ever has in her car) to The Style Council, Elvis Costello and The Ronettes (artists he regularly shares on mix tapes) it's all "just about love really."

Spectrals has always been a small operation. Now in its third year of existence, Louis started by recording in a friend's knocked-together studio and posting the songs on MySpace. Despite originally only being for his closest friends, his Myspace soon attracted the attention of discerning labels all over the world: from Captured Tracks (Dum Dum Girls, Wild Nothing) to Sex Is Disgusting (Mazes, Human Hair) to Slumberland (we released his excellent "7th Date" single last year) to Underground Peoples, where he eventually released last year's "Extended Play."

On "Bad Penny," recorded with Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Spacemen 3) in early 2011, Spectrals' knack for writing a great tune is more obvious than ever. "I just love these songs" he says "all I'd hope is for people to come away saying, 'they were 11 ace songs' or if there's a a guy or girl getting messed about, that it makes sense to them. I'm not wanting make out I'm a genius, I hate it when groups do that. People don't like being talked down to, y'know? This is just songs." Packed with great song-writing, smart arrangements and main Louis' distinctive, jazzy guitar, this is one amazingly complete and accomplished debut album. *** Terry Malts are back with second single ***
San Francisco's Terry Malts follow-up their smash "I'm Neurotic" single with another blazing three song EP. Their heads-down live shows and immaculate power-pop song-writing has made this irreverent punk trio has become one of the most talked about bands in SF in ages. Mashing up the best bits from such stellar forebears as The Undertones, Buzzcocks and Descendents, Terry Malts haven't forgotten that one of the key elements of punk has always been FUN.

All three songs on "Something About You" are full of fuzzy/crunchy riffs, galloping drums and sing-along vocal hooks. The title tune speeds by at a brisk clip, full of "ooh ooh" backing vocals and classic SoCal punk vibes. "No Sir, I'm Not A Christian" is possibly the catchiest statement of atheism we've ever heard, 1:35 of self-determination. "Fun Night" is a current live favorite, always sure to get the kids in the crowd jumping around. Fast and furious, it's feedback-laden guitars are the exclamation at the end of the excellent single. Another future classic from Terry Malts, and pressed on snazzy pink vinyl.

A big week here at Slumberland HQ. Devon Williams' stunning second album is out this week, along with singles frm Big Troubles and Sarandon. We've got a lot of bands on tour now or going on tour soon, so be sure to read on for tour dates and info about forthcoming releases.


*** Devon Williams' new album is simply euphoric ***
Devon Williams performs a shimmering pop music that tempers sweetness and bliss with an honest, unguarded perspective. Williams' music is informed by his broad musical knowledge and diverse tastes; while the past echoes through his tunes, his song-writing skills, strong musical voice and arrangement/production prowess mark him as a truly unique talent on the scene. The past can be a window on the present, and Williams' distinctive blend of power-pop, orchestrated soft-rock, folk-rock and lush, layered jangle-pop takes full flight on "Euphoria," his new album.

Euphoria presents an homage to things romantic and rare. A powerful and catchy set of songs matched with a more intricate and layered production than his 2008 debut solo album Carefree, "Euphoria" retains a uniform feel though it was recorded and mixed in several studios by producers like NYC's Jorge Elbrecht (from the excellent Violens) and Vancouver’s Dave Carswell, who also produced Williams’ onetime touring mate, Destroyer.

From the gushing crescendo of "Slight Pain" to the trance-like state of "Dreaming," the album's vast emotional landscape embodies the tough-minded/tender-hearted spirit that animates Williams' live performances. The 12 songs on "Euphoria" live in a dizzy head space of quiet desperation, progressing from the loving and warm "Revelations" to complacency in "Sufferer," then back to the optimistic "Right Direction" directly into the claustrophobic, pounding chorus of "How is There Always Room?" Lush and layered, Williams chooses this colorful world to make light of dark thoughts. "Euphoria" is Williams' finest record yet, a very personal work of great beauty that is as thought-provoking as it is musically intoxicating.

*** Big Troubles release first single from amazing second album ***
Big Troubles were formed by a group of kids who had been friends since high school, playing in bands, listening to records and coming of musical age together. Like the best of their peers they're omnivorous musical consumers, as enamored of classic Brit Pop gems as they are of 90s slacker indie rock. Led by two very gifted singer/song-writers in Alex Craig and Ian Drennan, Big Troubles are that rare beast: a band with two distinctive musical voices that smoothly mesh to create one integrated personality.

Their first album "Worry" and its attendant singles were excellent fuzz pop records in their own right, but to make their new record the band has taken the step of bringing in help in the form of the legendary Mitch Easter. With Mr. Easter's expert engineering help, Big Troubles' excellent new album "Romantic Comedy" is a masterpiece of modern pop; a perfect balance of grit and polish, gorgeous guitar sounds and angelic vocals, underpinned by a set of superb songs.

Sad Girls is the first single from "Romantic Comedy" and an ideal introduction to Big Troubles, 2011 style. A lovely slice of updated power-pop based on a catchy stop-start verse that gives way to an indelible, spiraling chorus, this tune is as big and bright as they come. On the flip side, "Phantom" raises the volume a bit, hearkening back to first album hits like "Freudian Slips" and "Bite Yr Tongue."

*** Sarandon release "Piglet" as a digital single ***
Piglet is the new digital single from Sarandon's excellent recent album Sarandon's Age Of Reason. Musically Sarandon have moved their sound forward. Produced once again by the inimitable Anthony Chapman (Collapsed Lung, Bis, Klaxxons), the sound is a more mature take on the angular agit-pop of their previous outings. The cheese-wire treble of the guitars remains, the bass thuds and booms and the drums clatter at light speed, but the songs contained in "Sarandon's Age Of Reason" are more carefully crafted and arranged.

"Piglet" is perfect example of Sarandon, the 2011 version. Catchy as hell, and yes it's 'pop', but pop with a razor edge and a wicked sense of humor. Also featured on this single are covers of two huge influences on Sarandon - The McTells' "Expecting Joe" and The Nightingales' classic "Crafty Fag." Sarandon know their music history and are great interpreters for these two cornerstones of DIY post-punk pop. Sarandon are back with a vengeance. Back to rescue you all from the mundanity of modern la-la-love-you indie pop.

*** Veronica Falls release first single from long-awaited debut album ***
From the ashes of the late, great The Royal We and Sexy Kids come Veronica Falls. Forming in early 2009, they posted a few tunes on their MySpace site and were quickly recognized by those with a discerning ear for urgent, tuneful guitar pop with a dark undercurrent. Excellent singles for "Found Love In A Graveyard" and "Beachy Head" on Captured Tracks and No Pain In Pop turned heads on both sides of the Atlantic. In a musical landscape cluttered with sound alike lo-fi pop bands, Veronica Falls' consummate song-writing skills, spooky harmonies and distinctive guitar interplay clearly set them apart and marks their debut LP as one of the most anxiously awaited in recent memory.

Recorded with Guy Fixsen (My Bloody Valentine, The Breeders) and Ash Workman (Metronomy, Summer Camp), that album is now complete, and Bad Feeling is the first single. Sporting a rough garage feel and driven by hard-strummed guitars and thumping drums, "Bad Feeling" wouldn't sound out of place on a "Nuggets" comp or an early Flying Nun record. But once we get to the male/female vocals in the call-and-response chorus, we know we're in a place that only Veronica Falls can take us. It's tuneful and definitely pop, but pop touched by darkness and mystery, the kind that sticks with you long after the song is over.

They'll be joined on this outing by Talk Normal, a Brooklyn-based duo that shares Weekend's affinity for creating a cacophony of sound tempered with beautiful, layered textures and propulsive songwriting. *** Brilliant Colors release second album ***
Inspired by post-punk fervor and the spiky pop of C86 and early Flying Nun/Creation label output, San Francisco’s Brilliant Colors stake out a unique spot in the indie music landscape. Their 2009 album, Introducing, is one of the finest debuts in recent memory, and they followed it with 7-inches on Slumberland and Make a Mess and a a split 7-inch with Belfast's brilliant Girls Names.

Now Brilliant Colors hit the studio again to create Again And Again, an album that represents a great next step for the band. The song-writing is still as infectious as ever but the tunes are now more carefully arranged, pushing the band far beyond their punk roots to something as elemental as pop gets. The mood is confessional and late-night dreamy; Jess' unadorned vocals and eloquent lyrics are personal, direct and atmospherically deployed, mixed in with the songs like another instrument.

Songs like opener "Hey Dan," the sprightly "Value Lines" and "Hitting Traffic" combine Jess' catchy-as-hell riffs with Diane's steady, rolling beats and Michelle's dense baselines to fashion songs that are deceptively simple -- straightforwardly rocking but also richly layered, revealing new twists on each listen. Add in classic-sounding stormers like "Cult Face" and "How Much Younger" and you have all the makings of another great Brilliant Colors album, one that shows how finely they've honed their own unique brand punk-informed crash-pop. *** Devon Williams releases first single from upcoming second album ***
LA-based Devon Williams is a young man with a true gift as a song-writer and musician. He's traveled from punk rock roots to an enviable place where power-pop meets classic 60s melodies, the best of swirling 80s-flavored production and shimmering, jangling guitars. His brilliant debut solo album "Carefree," released in 2008, demonstrated a knack for crafting timeless pop that’s equal parts Brill Building and Topanga Canyon. On it, Williams hearkened back to great songwriters like Nilsson, Chilton, Downes and Westerberg.

Following up his superb Fall 2010 Slumberland single "Sufferer," Devon now offers another taste from his forthcoming album "Euphoria." Your Sympathy is a simply beautiful piece of timeless pop, recalling legends like The Church, Felt and Teardrop Explodes while still being pure Devon in it's attention to arrangement and melody. The tune is another Williams future-classic, instantly memorable and charming with its driving elegance.

Slotting in with musical fellows like Destroyer (indeed, engineer Dave Carswell plays on and recorded the most recent Destroyer LP) and Puro Instinct, Devon effortlessly incorporates a wealth of disparate influences to create something totally personal and uniquely well-crafted. The flip side "Sisters" could be an a-side of its own on just about any single, a sweeping miniature epic full of fuzzed guitars and soaring, chorused jangle. All copies pressed on lovely pink vinyl.

The Art Museums exploded onto the imaginary Pop Art scene in their minds back in 2010 with the widely acclaimed "Rough Frame" mini-LP on alleged elitist ex-Brooklyn label Woodsist. Here they trouble indie pop-classicist SLUMBERLAND label with three more concise tracks of rough jangle, cheap drum machines, joyously wrong harmonizing & neurotic romanticism. Comfortably occupying the spot where 60s pop suss meets first-wave post-punk DIY pop and contemporary bedroom experimentation, The Art Museums craft positively giddy tunes that make terms like lo-fi and indie-pop redundant and pointless; this is just great POP made by people who know and love it.

The Museums' Glenn D. & Josh A. have been at it in the bedroom for a little while now and came up with some anthems to send up the glory of pop. They are there for you when you're feeling confused, lonely or alienated and only a 45 RPM single can help. Dancing With A Hole In Your Heart is an ace sing-along tune that would be right at home on Dan Treacy's legendary Whaam! label, a succinct 1:30 of slashing, modish guitars and great vocal harmonies. "Imaginary Day" and "You Don't Want to Live Like That" are equally fab - catchy tunes filled with earnestly strummed guitars, thumping drum machines and cheap keyboards.
