By CHRIS | Published: MARCH 13, 2011
Get your Poster,go to the SXSW Block Party, tickle my Red Gorilla near a Dizzy Rooster???

When playing festivals and risking it all, you should play the world cup of indie festivals – Austin, Texas’ SXSW, NOT bobs backyard bonanza!

If you’ve wondered what to do, or where to go, here are some things we’ve been recommended. We’ve also found out why The Beatles changed the lyrics to ‘I am the Walrus.’

1. The Lions SXSW poster made by Billy Perkins

The Lions have never had any posters designed professionally before and we usually end up doing our own. So in the spirit of the Austin, Texas attitude we’ve decided to go BIG. We picked the biggest name in poster design we could find, Billy Perkins.

Perkins works in the Austin, Texas area and has worked with bands like Alice in Chains, The Melvin’s, B.B King, Willie Nelson, and the list goes on. His work is unique, original and stands out from the usual lets put a rabbit on it, make it look cute, quirky and indie. It really grabs your attention and forces you to look at it, like proper art should.

If you would like to see more of Perkins work and some of the other poster’s he has designed head over to GigPosters.com, definitely worth a peep.

2. Go to the SXSW Block Party!

The Austin Convention Center it is the hub for the arts community, all types of events are held their such as film, music and art showings. This will be the starting point of The Lions SXSW first showcases, we will be performing March 15th and 16th at the annual “Block Party.” This party is held every year by SXSW as a kick off to the beginning of music week, and the end of the film festival. Most film and television producers stop by to check out music and also enjoy the free food and drinks they get with their passes.

3. Tickle my Red Gorilla near The Dizzy Rooster…dripping from a dead dogs eye?

I found this page on Wikipedia which listed rare material by ‘The Beatles’, and thought I should share it. When John Lennon originally wrote ‘I am the Walrus’ the line went, and I quote:

“…tickle my red gorilla near the dizzy rooster that’s dripping from a dead dogs eye.”

But after much debate about the L.S.D reference it was decided that the line be dropped from the song. John felt it didn’t make any sense or add any meaning to the lyrics. It was however released on a rare 45rpm dutch pressing of ‘I am The Walrus’ with their fantastic b-side ‘Jane’ which we sometimes cover. If you are able to find a copy prices range anywhere from $500 to $4,500 USD.

The strangest part after reading the Wiki, was that I discovered a free festival in Austin, during music week called The Red Gorilla Festival. It is located in the heart of Austin on 6th street where some of the best venues in the city are, one being The Dizzy Rooster. Another great pro is that Red Gorilla does not require a pass and is free for patron’s of SXSW and open to the public.

The Dizzy Rooster is home to probably the best time in Austin with $2 drinks and has “the best bar staff in the city.” We’re looking forward to finishing up our stay, and playing there March 19th 2011 at 8pm.

So, hopefully this blog has helped you make up your mind about where to go and what to do when you are in Austin. There are so many things to do I don’t think all of them can be done. If you’d like to see what happens when we visit Austin check our youtube page ,TheLionsTube for a video blog or check our most recent updates on our facebook, TheLionsFB.

Cheers big ears,

Chris

http://www.thelionsrockandroll.com

After all the fighting, yelling and “stabbing” we were able to pick a song that we all thought was good!

This Monday, March 14th 2011 at 2:20pm “Groove” will debut on X92.9 on the dailies. We’re happy that X is kicking this year off for us. Thanks to Malissa, Christian, Fraser, Carly and Candice (in between blurbs of her boyfriend lol), who have all been good to us over the years and helped us with promo, radio play or getting great gigs!

For those of you who are not in Calgary here is how you can listen to the song,

1. Go to http://www.x929.ca/
2. Click on “listen live” near the top corner
3. Click again and a new window pops up and starts playing

The Lions will be in Austin, Texas from March 14th to March 19th to promote and play showcases of their new album at SXSW and Red Gorilla. These showcases are being played to follow up with some of the 300+ radio stations that played New Rise Of The Footsoldier, last year. Of the 300 stations The Lions had Heavy Rotation (which means a lot of plays) on 40 of those radio stations, two of them happen to be in Austin, Texas.

We will be back soon with another youtube video of Groove and hopefully will have some kind of EP ready in April before the album comes out in August/September 2011.

The new album will definitely be different, but better than anything we have done before, due to the way I now have to play guitar. I can’t really say much else other than that but it sounds great better songs, better melodies and better lyrics. Brad and Trish from Taylor Sound have really helped out with this album and let us take our time to get it done properly.

All the best and thanks for reading this blog, be sure to tune into Xposure this Sunday with Malissa to hear some stuff on The Lions and check out http://www.youtube.com/thelionstube for videos and updates on http://www.facebook.com/thelionsfb

Later,

Chris

The Lions

http://www.thelionsrockandroll.com

New Rise Of The Footsoldier

Is the best album that we have released, so far. It was never inteneded as a concept album but apparently it was, which I am really happy about. The words new rise we're taken from Jimi Hendrix's song "New Rise Of The Setting Sun" and "Rise Of The Footsoldier" was taken from one of the best movies Chris has ever seen. Both phrases we're combined to get the album title. If your in a band or know anything about music you will get right away why both are relevant. If not who care's, no worries, it's a cool title! ;)

We are now working on a new album which will put The Lions on the map.

This is what I mean by that.

When the 7th album is released, it will be a statement for the band to confirm that we don't need a major label and will continue to make music without the financial support or promotional campaigns a label offers. Until labels are willing to recognize that we own our music and their our songs and they are just mere middle man to get our music out to the masses we will quite happily keep making albums to our thousands of fans. Hopefully one day millions.

Major labels have destroyed many of the great bands I love such as the la's and stone roses. I will not let them do the same to my band and dictate to me that I must write another song like Yeah Yeah Yeah or Jane, we'll do what we want when we want. So fuck you! When they can help rather than hinder, then and only then will I speak to them. I have NEVER given my music to a label rep cause they're young scenester idiot kids who don't care enough about music and just want there promotion.

We have solely relied on our supporters (fans) to promote our band and ourselves. Each day the fanbase grows bigger and bigger thanks to people on facebook, youtube, myspace, last.fm, jango, twitter etc.

Anyway don't really know why this got written but it did and it was a good way to kill a little time and was just some random thoughts.

So to anyone who finds this, big thanks to CJSW90.9fm, X92.9fm, and all there staff for all the help throughout the years. WE OWE YOU!!!! oh....... and a big FUCK YOU to FFWD for wasting paper and not being informed about Calgary's music scene. Hear Peter Hemminger is on a break and hope he never somes back cause he couldn't name a song of an album of one band he's written about and is a hack.

Cheers big ears,

The Lions
New Rise of the Footsoldier
