1. The Vines - Melodia: Back with a vengeance, and rocking harder than anyone else in the year. It is a damn shame that this album has yet to receive a release/distribution outside of the band's native Australia.

2. Devon Williams - Carefree: Wonderful pop with an added flourish of strings and fine melodies.

3. The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely - Much more consistent than their last album, and also the last White Stripes album.

4. Dillinger Four - C I V I L W A R: After a 6 year gap from their last album, D4 also make a great comeback effort here. Despite a less abrasive sound, the songs are still nothing short of amazing.

5. Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop And Roll: once again there was no new Green Day album this year. I was willing to settle for this slab of rollicking 60s garage throwback fun. Nothing new, but I wasn't impressed with anything new this year anyways.

6. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath: As pretentious as always, but the Mars Volta were able to maintain the rock here...for the most part!

7. Reggie And The Full Effect - Last Stop: Crappy Town: Another harder effort from James with synths, screams, and funny lyrics abroad. Sadly, no alter ego songs appeared on this one.

8. The Walkmen - You & Me: The piano dominated the sound of this album, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. These songs were also very heavy on reverb, to give way for a very atmospheric feel that managed to captivate then lose me upon listening, which I found to be very impressive.

9. Smoking Popes - Stay Down: This reunion album picks up right where the Popes left off. Catchy, melodic pop-punk with a bit more kick since it's been over 10 years for these guys!

10. Alkaline Trio - Agony & Irony: The Trio's major label debut resumes their dark, satanic imagery except this time with handclaps and dancier rhythms. I wasn't blown away, but was relieved it wasn't as boring as their last two albums tended to be in places.

Honorable mentions:
One Day As A Lion - One Day As A Lion: The only new release by a new band that I was able to dig. Featuring the distinctive rapping of Zack De La Rocha (also on keys) with ex-Mars Volta drummer, Jon Theodore. Unfortunately this was only an EP of 5 simple, but aggressive jams. Here's hoping they release a full length album soon.

Weezer - Weezer (The Red Album): I had to check this out strictly on the merits of Weezer's first two ranking on the top of my all-time faves list, and also being an integral part of my early high school days. The songs here get even more gimmicky, Rivers' vocals get lamer, and the other three members were allowed to write (or co-write), and sing lead (!!!). The results were rather mixed, and I only enjoyed 3 songs thoroughly, but hell I'd rather listen to bad, new Weezer songs than a lot of what's happening these days in music.
