Mon 28 Jul – Nine Inch Nails, Crystal Castles

Well, I was a little worried at the start. We had picked up some Etymotics ER-20 earplugs, and when Crystal Castles came on, I was worried about the real show because while I could tell the speakers were as loud as satan, I couldn't grasp why I couldn't hear the vocalist. Were my earplugs blocking out her voice?

Nope. Whoever was mixing Crystal Castles did a terrible job. I mean, it was entertaining watching the singer bounce around the stage silently, I don't think that was the aim.

A set from crystal castles went by, perhaps not quite fast enough. Then after a wait while they got the light guys on their rigging, we had the show start: And what a show.

Positively perfect execution. Our seats were excellent, no question they were worth the price of admission. And the set was amazing, and LONG too. Which made me really happy.

In some of the higher seats there were certainly some dickbags, but for the most part the crowd was decent, if a little still. Those who really wanted to be there enjoyed the crap out of it.

Now to track down someone's set list, so I can make a playlist

The Third Hand

Ok. So I've read the reviews. Pitchfork hated it, Stylus makes some good points. But I think the key mistake of The Third Hand was RJD2 putting out under the name RJD2. There are so many connotations that have been put into that name, RJD2, and I think it would have helped the album a lot for him to have retired the moniker for this Album, putting it out instead under another name. Of course, perhaps it would not have sold as much (not that I know sales figures, just thinking that many bought it under the impetus of the name RJD2), but I also think people would've been far more open to it as an album, and reviews would have been better, and perhaps we could have seen it skyrocket.

Not to say I don't think a band can change directions without changing a name, I just think that in this case, The Third Hand would have been better served by a name change.

It's a lot better than the reviews say, but I think that holds true only if you stop expecting the drums to drop and Blueprint to hit up the rhymes.
