The Big Chill 08

What, no reviews of this stunning festival!? Well, I'll jot down my thoughts quickly then :)

Plaid
I first discovered Plaid with the track "Assault on Precinct Zero" I'm not sure what took me, but the track instantly became one of my loved tracks.

Anyway, I felt that was basis enough to go and watch these guys live, and the idea of watching live dance at the same time made the event even more enticing. For the first portion (maybe 30minutes?) it was just Plaid with a very impressive VJ in the background. I can't tell you what they played, but it had a much more glitchy edge than I recall Double Figure being.

Random Dance did some extremely jaw dropping dance routines. Heck, I saw stuff I didn't even know the human body could do! The routines felt very fitting for the music.

Highlight of this event has to be about 10 minutes of minimalism, with the visualization being an ever evolving oscilloscope trace growing angrier and more chaotic, with Random Dance doing their thing in the fore ground. Beautiful.

Trentemøller
Oh. My. Goodness.

I've heard of Trentemøller before, but never actually heard any of his music. I think it's safe to say I'm a fan now though. I was at the front of the crowd before he began, watching various synths and drums being bought on stage - wondering what I'd be in for. After hearing Plaid play before hand, I knew this had to be something big.

I wasn't quite expecting anything THIS big though! For an open air stage the soundsystem was absolutely immense, and the visuals were spot on. Of course, it's all about the music - and I'm not sure if it's how Trentemøller usually plays, but it was veeeery heavy stuff. The basslines constantly kept tearing through, and were constantly twisted and manipulated at this guys excellently creative fingertips.

This was one of the best acts I've seen at the festival, and am most certainly glad I stayed to check this guy out!

Flying Lotus
For those who know me, they already know what I'm going to say about this!

I came to FlyLo's set with high expectations (which I don't usually like to do, but this guy just blows me away too damn much) and was naturally right at the front, ready for those full on quirky basslines mr. lotus in so known for.

Saddly, big bad n' heavy it was not to be - at least at the start. due to sound problems, Brainfeeder sounded quite frankly awful. Speakers were cutting out all over the place, which was a shame, because it's a truly delightful track!

But, maybe 5 minutes in the problems were solved and all of us in the crowd were smacked in the face by said basslines :) Not only does this man produce some excellent original music, he's great on stage too. It's always nice to see the producers jumping around and expressing themselves while they play their music.

A lot of classics were dropped, along with a remix of Tea Leaf Dancers ("I'm sorry, I had to, I had to!") which had every swayying and bobbing. Hopefully, some of the other tunes I didn't recognise are on there way on Warp in the next few LA eps :)
