So, Montreal was having one of its legendary, humid, around-30-Celsius day. The Casa Del Popolo is a great place for concerts mainly because it's small and intimate, but in days like these, it feels too small and waaay too intimate. I personally thanked God that night for the smoke ban law passed recently. Even with this, I had a great night.

Fist band, The Vampire Weekend, was good, upbeat. Reminded me a bit of They Might Be Giant (when a friend made me think of it, though).

Second band, or should I rather say "a guy and his Garage Band software" was surprisingly very good. Being alone, Jona / Y.A.C.H.T. was everywhere, running, jumping, and dancing. When I say everywhere, I don't mean on the stage, but REALLY everywhere. His prerecorded music is good enough and well written to make us forget there were actually no band. Y.A.T.C.H.'s craziness is the best precursor the Projectors could find for their own music.

It is during his set that the show sold out. Obviously, the crowd was there for the same reason I was. So, for the meat of the evening, I took my courage by two hands and left my relatively well ventilated with air-to-breath spot, in a comfy armchair way at the back, and strategically advanced to the front of the room during the smoker crowd went outside.

Some problems with sound checks delayed a bit the start of the Dirty Projectors (or maybe it was simply over anxiousness mixed with the wall-melting atmosphere). As with the previous bands, the crowd was a bit "cold", with people even still talking during the introduction and the beginning of the first song, but, quickly, Police Story demanded respect by itself and everyone went quiet, people were pleased, for those who knew them, or simply awed. At that point, everyone knew they were dealing with a different beast that they wouldn't see again for a while. Each songs were warmly received, with high cheers for Gimme Gimme Gimme, whose syncope, sung by the very talented Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian, always does its trick.

Dave Longstreth has this very "maladroit" look and (new) attitude which goes very well with his deconstructive interventions. His songs feel like a struggle between convention and anti-conformism, where harmony sometimes brings back chaos, or sometimes madness simply takes over everything only to come back by its own to melodic state. In all of this, I think it's this ballet, much more in evidence on stage, that makes the Dirty Projector's music worth seeing live.
