Emmy-Winning Series Returns to Air Monday-Thursday at 11 p.m. (ET, PT) 20 Years after its Debut

Pee-wee's Playhouse, the winner of an astounding 22 Emmy Awards and a pop culture touchstone nearly 20 years after its debut, returns to TV, joining the Adult Swim lineup beginning Monday, July 10. The acclaimed series, which has been largely absent from the airwaves for nearly 15 years, stars Paul Reubens as his alter-ego Pee-wee Herman, and features a rich cast of characters who drop by "the place where anything can happen."

Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's late night sister network featuring animation and other programming aimed at adults 18-34, will air the groundbreaking series Monday-Thursday at 11 p.m. (ET, PT), airing all 45 original half-hour episodes of the series and the rarely-seen Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special. Many of the episodes have not been seen on TV since the original Saturday-morning run of Pee-wee's Playhouse.

In the series, Pee-wee, dressed in his too-small grey suit and red bowtie, welcomes a cavalcade of characters to his playhouse, including the King of Cartoons, Cowboy Curtis, Miss Yvonne, Pteri the Pterodactyl, Randy (the resident trouble-starter), Captain Carl, Jambi the genie, nosey neighbor Mrs. Rene, and Reba the mail lady. Other inhabitants of Pee-wee's Playhouse include Pee-wee's talking chair, Chairry, Globey the Globe, Magic Screen, Conky the Robot, hipster-beatniks Chickie Baby, Cool Cat and Dirty Dog, Cowntess the cow and the family of miniature dinosaurs that live in a mouse hole inside a wall. Each fast-paced episode blends live-action, puppets and all different types of animation including vintage cartoons, stop-motion Penny segments and Spanish superhero El Hombre. Plus there's always a lesson or two.

Pee-wee's Playhouse originally aired Saturday mornings on CBS, beginning on Sept. 13, 1986. The cast includes Phil Hartman, Laurence Fishburne, S. Epatha Merkerson and Natasha Lyonne. The series won a remarkable 22 Emmy Awards during its original run. Since then, Pee-wee's Playhouse has attained iconic status. In 2004, TV Guide named the show one of the top-ten cult classics of all time. A hugely successful 2004 DVD release brought all 45 original Saturday morning episodes, including eight "lost" episodes, plus the classic Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special, to new generations of fans. Gary Panter, famed painter, punk rock illustrator and comic book artist won three Emmys for his work as the show's production designer. Musicians who scored episodes of Pee-wee's Playhouse include Mark Mothersbaugh, Dweezil Zappa, George Clinton, Stanley Clark and Danny Elfman.

"I'd say this was a dream come true," said Paul Reubens in Hollywood, California, "but I never dared to dream The Playhouse would join Adult Swim's amazing line-up of cool shows! Well, maybe I did dream of it a couple of times. OK, it's a dream come true!"

"We're all huge fans of Pee-wee's Playhouse and we're really happy that it will be a part of Adult Swim," said Mike Lazzo, Cartoon Network senior vice president of programming and production, responsible for Adult Swim.

Paul Reubens created the Pee-wee Herman character in 1978 while a member of the famed L.A.-based improv group The Groundlings. It rapidly grew into a cultural phenomenon. In 1981, he sold out five consecutive months of performances of The Pee-we Herman Show at the Roxy Theatre in L.A. HBO taped the show for its On Location series and Pee-wee was introduced to a national audience. His sold-out 22-city national tour in 1984 included Carnegie Hall. The 1985 movie Pee-wee's Big Adventure, co-written by Reubens and directed by Tim Burton, was a commercial and critical success, which led to the series Pee-wee's Playhouse and the 1988 movie Big Top Pee-wee.

Since that time, Reubens has acted in film and television, earning an Emmy nomination for his recurring role on TV's Murphy Brown and garnering critical acclaim in Ted Demme's Blow, where he joined a cast including Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Franka Potente. He stars with Lukas Haas, James King and Thomas Jane in David Arquette's directorial-debut slasher film, The Tripper, and next can be seen in the upcoming feature Reno 911! Miami. His voice can be heard in many films, including Dr. Dolittle, Teacher's Pet- The Movie, Rugrats and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Danger Doom
The Mouse and the Mask
[Epitaph; 2005]
Rating: 7.8

When news first surfaced of this collaboration between forum-favorite emcee MF Doom and copyright-infringing producer Danger Mouse, keyboards were atwitter with conjecture of what the duo would produce. Cartoon themes were a given-- maybe even too obvious-- but no one thought MF and DM would bring in Meatwad, the mucus-throated glob of raw beef who spits more heat than a thousand Biggie Smallses. If you think I'm describing a fat rapper and not an actual wad of meat, I feel for you, but don't leave yet. If you listen to Doom, you expect the ludicrous, and The Mouse and the Mask is his most ludicrous to date. Possibly in reaction to the rampant comedy skits on rap records in the last decade, Doom and Danger go all out, calling in the Aqua Teen Hunger Force to help craft the best funhouse hip-hop since De La Soul Is Dead. It may not move the critical masses like Madvillainy, but if nothing else, Danger Doom will get Comic-Con going nuts.

By now, most fans know what to expect from the parties involved. MF Doom still wears his villainous mask and rhymes stuff with "goonie-goo-goo" and "poop," along with brilliantly enigmatic self-deprecations and disses so cryptic their targets are oblivious. Danger Mouse, as he's done with cartoon hooligans and mashing up G.O.A.T.s, displays a deft hand on the sequencer and a taste for whimsical soundtrack samples. Here he takes that penchant and amplifies it, conducting neck-snapping scores for long-lost Looney Tunes. And then there's Adult Swim, the four-hour block of absurdimation aired late-nightly on the Cartoon Network, which slants toward bizarro and has a tendency for extreme sarcasm. Forcing all this farce onto one record could be disastrous, but instead it comes off like one big calamitous Saturday-morning public access show.

Doom loves themes, as he's shown on Mmm... Food and his King Geedorah project, but never has the concept of an album had him sounding quite this chipper. The Adult Swim crew controls the vibe with ridiculous interludes (most notably, Master Shake contributes a series of escalatingly angry phone messages), but also inspires Doom to avoid the dourness that shades most of his other records. The labyrinthine self-analyses of Madvillainy are mostly absent, but Doom remains sharp, focused on slaying a cavalcade of smartass cartoons. Elsewhere, Cee-Lo stops by to croon over the fuzz and slap of "Bizzy Box"; Talib Kweli lightens up and raps simply about breakfast cereal; and Ghostface recollects his own days behind the disguise on "The Mask", which certainly builds anticipation for a rumored GhostDoom project.

Danger Doom won't change your life. It's not as revealing as Doom's other work, and Danger Mouse's big, Technicolor productions here are a little too trivial to be immortal. But for what it attempts-- which is basically a comedy record with no-joke skills-- it exceeds expectations. The intelligence of everyone involved keeps it from being Jeff Foxworthy-worthy, with the interludes and adlibs as rewindable as Doom's lyrics. Yes, I've heard Three 6 Mafia and Young Jeezy and Lil' Wayne, and the underground is keeping it so real. But on Saturday morning, when temples throb and lungs wheeze, I'm trying to sprinkle sugar on my corn flakes-- not cocaine.

-------------------------------------------
Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek, meaning Hide and Seek in Japanese, is a chilling short 25 minute animated computer-generated imagery film that is based around an innocent children's game. "Otokoyo", as they call it, is a game of hide and seek, played near the ruins of an old city which no one inhabits. Whenever the children play this game, one by one, they go missing, and it is said demons and ghosts are the cause for their disappearances. One night, a boy named Hikora must play this game and enter the forbidden territory of "Otokoyo" in hopes of finding his missing sister.

In the Japanese version of the game Tag, the person who is "it" is also referred to as being the ogre, or Oni.
-------------------------------------------
"Central Park Media's award-winning CG sci-fi horror anime "Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek" is to be broadcast just in time for Halloween on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block. An Adult Swim Halloween special and the "Kakurenbo" worldwide network television premiere, CPM's "Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek" will air at midnight on October 29th between episodes of Adult Swim favorites "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "Samurai Champloo."

"Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek" is the first film by the new animation studio YAMATOWORKS, an independent computer graphics production house founded by Syuhei Morita, a veteran of the prolific Studio 4C (The Animatrix, Steamboy). Morita left Studio 4C to found YAMATOWORKS to create CG productions with the look and feel of a traditional 2D animation. Despite "Kakurenbo" being YAMATOWORKS's first project, "Kakurenbo" attracted some of the biggest voice acting talent on both sides of the Pacific – its cast led by Junko Takeuchi (Naruto) in Japan and Michael Sinterniklaas (Alien 9, Fullmetal Alchemist) in North America.
Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block does not air Friday nights. For those who can't bear an evening without "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" or "Robot Chicken," logging on to the Internet will assuage their withdrawal symptoms.

Starting Sept. 16, AdultSwim.com will offer full-length episodes of these and other programs in an initiative Cartoon Network is calling Friday Night Fix.

Each week between 11 p.m.-6 a.m. ET, a selection of current and fan-requested shows will be available for free viewing. There also will be previews of episodes scheduled to debut the next Sunday.

Cartoon Network New Media vp and general manager Paul Condolora said Friday Night Fix was "upping the ante" by giving its fans another opportunity to enjoy their favorite shows.

Adult Swim New Media creative director Chip Duffey said the block's online message boards indicated a great demand for a Friday component.

"We think that the Friday Night Fix is a great complement to our programming lineup, and we will make sure to keep it interesting for our biggest fans," he said. "In addition to new episodes, we'll show fan favorites and add some rarely seen archival episodes of shows like 'Space Ghost Coast to Coast' to the mix each week."

AdultSwim.com recently launched a programming-themed social network called the Adult Swim Fan Collective. Duffey reported more than 70,000 members have joined in less than a month. The site plans to add ringtones and additional downloadable music in the near future, he said.

[Courtsey of Wikipedia]

Quiet storm is a late-night radio format, featuring soulful slow jams, pioneered in the mid 1970s by then station intern Melvin Lindsey at Howard University Radio, WHUR-FM, in Washington, D.C. Smokey Robinson's like-titled hit single, released in 1975 as the title track to his third solo album, lent its name to the format and to the radio program that introduced it to the public, as well.

When Lindsey's "The Quiet Storm" debuted in 1976, the first tune on the turntable was the seven-minute-long Robinson hit, which introduced the slot every night thereafter. For many, when Robinson's trademark tenor voice wafted out over the airwaves, it signalled the end of the stresses of the workday. "The Quiet Storm" was four hours of melodically soulful music that provided an intimate, laid-back mood tailor-made for late-night listening, and that was the key to its tremendous appeal among adult audiences.

The format was an immediate success, becoming so popular that within a few years, virtually every station in the U.S. with a core black, urban listenership adopted a similar format for its graveyard slot.

Melvin Lindsey died of AIDS in 1992, but the "Quiet Storm" format he originated remains a staple in radio programming today, almost 30 years after its inception.

Today, quiet storm is also a broad term given to an array of mellow, slow-groove rhythm and blues/soul music and smooth jazz offerings of the type featured on Melvin Lindsey's WHUR program, and on a myriad of other stations that followed his lead.

Initially targeted primarily at a black audience, quiet storm music is distinguished by understated, mellow dynamics and relaxed tempos and rhythms. It can be soothingly pensive, or express romantic sentiment. Quiet storm music is similar to soft rock and adult contemporary styles, but it is more closely and unmistakably rooted in R&B, often with jazz extensions. At its best, the style features an urbane sophistication and subdued soulfulness.

Quiet storm programming is credited with launching the careers of Luther Vandross and Anita Baker, and with introducing Sade to U.S. audiences. Classic quiet storm recordings include Frankie Beverly and Maze's "Golden Time of Day," Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," the orchestrations of Philadelphia soul, the recordings of Al Green and Bill Withers, much of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery's work during his CTI (Creed Taylor, Incorporated) years, and the work of jazz-funk saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. Quiet storm was most popular as a programming niche with baby boomers from the mid-'70s to the early '90s, after which time much of mainstream R&B took on a harder, hip-hop influenced approach.

WHUR radio still has a "Quiet Storm" show; and many urban, black radio stations still reserve their late-night programming slots for quiet storm music, as well. Now included in the genre is music with a hip-hop infusion, known as neo soul. Neo soul artists today include Brian McKnight, Joe, Jaheim, D'Angelo, Maxwell, Mary J. Blige, India Arie, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys. Quiet storm music is also the more mellow, soulful side of smooth and contemporary jazz.
