Obligatory meme instructions for those that might want to take on the challenge. So I was reading some of the memes out there and I ran across one that I thought was kind of interesting. You were to play your neighbour radio station, list the first ten artists that came up and your feelings about them. I tried it and eh. It was okay. Two artists I didn’t like. One I never heard of but was iffy on and the rest old favorites. So I thought I’d try something I thought was more interesting to me personally. I thought I would do each of my friends radio stations. List the particular song as well as artist and give my reaction to it. I’ve also decided to add a music video of some kind to the journals to give them a little interest.

MrWinczakos asked me nicely to look at his station so I accepted. He’s rated as a low rather than a very low like spirit_crusher who station I did enjoy immensely so lets see how this goes.

Taste-o-Meter: Low

Venus Blue - Oh NO NO NO. I don’t know what this is but I do NOT like it. Ears bleeding. Contemplating hitting a coworker over the head with the phone. Oh thank you, it’s over.

New Noise - Oh thank god this is better or this was going to make for a l o n g half hour. And then it all goes to hell. The “metal scream” is just something I don’t like. Otherwise the structure of this song is good if a little repetitive. I really like the chorus riff.

Golden - Okay. This I can do. Although after the last two I’m listening in constant fear that somehow it will all go south. This has kind of a nice feel, a little countrified for my tastes but I don’t hate it. In fact it’s growing on me as I type.

You Want Love - Nice mellow opening. Oh my goodness, it turned into 80’s hair band music. Is it? I guess it’s genre is listed as power metal which would make this a power ballad which is the kind of crap I almost successfully avoided throughout most of my teenage years. Apparently not today though.

Electric Wizard - Promising. Very promising. Vocals are acceptable. More than acceptable in fact. Let’s go with good. It’s a little long though without any really interesting bridge or fugue sections that make the whole piece seem less tight than it is and more monotonous. I actually forgot it was on for a few minutes there until it started to wrap up.

Eternal Life - Sweet Jeff Buckley. This song…eh…but Jeff overall? Woo fraking hoo.

Hand in Hand - Who is this and why have I never heard it before? Someone has been holding out on me somewhere.

Mannequin Republic - Skip skip skip. What was that noise?

Wear Your Love Like Heaven - Where did this come from. I feel like I’m on acid trip all of sudden. Not that Donovan doesn’t always make sort of feel like that but after all the shouting it’s all pink candy trees and soda pop rivers here at my desk.

Evil - A rock song. Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster! I don’t think I could have gone out on another screaming metal song as I already used my one allowed skip. This makes me want to just leave this soul killing job and it’s white man stereotypes from employees and go to Sweet Jane’s for a beer and some live music.

I have no idea what to say after that. It had its ups and downs. I discovered that MrWinczakos and I are not compatible musically. I’m sure MrW does not want to be my friend now.I did however discover a new artist to add to my list which makes it all worth it. I’m sure MrW does not want to be my friend now. Video selection for this is going to be tricky. Do I want to be true to theme of the list or pick something I’ll enjoy watching again and again? Oh the suspense!

I haven’t done one of these in a long time but when spirit_crusher asked me to do his radio meme of course I said yes. I am not a huge metal fan, which he seems to be, but I do have my moments and loves in the genre but I’m older and less angry than I used to be. I like doing the very lows, it’s always an interesting experience for me to see if I’m just being close minded or if I really just don’t like a genre of music. Which reminds me if a country fan reads this let me know so I can do your meme. Although I’m pretty sure it will just reinforce my ingrained hatred.

Taste-o-Meter: Very Low

Parallel Universe - I do like the Chili Peppers quite a bit so this is a good start.

The Lotus Eaters - I do like this. Never heard of nevermore before. More melodic than the kind of thing I was expecting. I was also expecting the heavier bit to be more grating and it’s actually really listenable. To tell you the truth I like it quite a bit and will be listening to more Nevermore.

Dreadful Hours - I like this song very much too. It’s really…moving? Nice transition from the melodic to the heavier stuff but I can’t stand the voice. I just want to laugh. It’s like the lead singer from Metalocalypse and no matter how much I like the music, which I do quite a bit actually, I just can’t help but giggle. Oh I like the bridge back to the original melodic feel.

Journey Through Pressure - This is okay. No strong opinion one way or the other. I like the feel but I’m not overly moved toward love of hate. Yeah just kind of bored.

Forgotten Hopes - I have come to the conclusion that there is a whole subgenre of metal that I nothing of. Apparently that is the type of spirit_crusher likes. I’m liking this.

Astronomy - Who doesn’t love Metallica.

A New Level - Oh God! I HATE Pantera. Everytime I hear them all I can see is my brother as a teenager and his greasy friends jumping around on the back porch the way only 14 year old boys can. Sorry, 30 seconds is all I can take. Skip.

Wheels Of Fire - Ah, Judas. You make me miss my tiny leather skirt.

Plate 3, following - I like it. I like it a lot. Oh and too short.

Opening Of The Gate - Oh. No. We are back to Metalocalypse. Now, I don’t want anyone to think that this is a disparaging comment about the show. Because it certainly isn’t. I LOVE the show. But I guess outside of that context there’s something about this particular style of “singing” that I just find beyond funny.

Well that was better than I hoped for and I did gain a few bands to add to my list of music. No matter who these belong to or the style of music I always have a good time. Thanks for asking me to do this spirit_crusher, you did not crush mine.

Roger Waters Dark Side Tour

Tue 10 Jul – Roger Waters

I didn't think I was going to make it. I had a rehearsal and I thought it was going to run much longer than it did. But I got lucky and got out early and also lucky because the band didn't take the stage until 8:30 so I only missed the first 30 minutes of the show. I heard Wish You Were Here while I was walking over the hill to the venue which was dotted with dozens of people who couldn't get tickets. I missed the next song because when you crest the hill and are directly behind the wall you can't hear anything. As I was walking to the venue I met a very nice guy who reassured me that I hadn't missed much of the show at all and that there was plenty of the set left.

I got there just on time to hear Perfect Sense followed by Leaving Beirut during which I could stop myself from sobbing openly. I work day in and day out with hardcore neocons and to be surrounded by people as angry and passionate as myself about what is going on in this country just was overwhelming. Next they played Sheep and they carried a huge pig balloon through the crowd. It was covered with writing saying things like torture degrades us all, habeus corpus matters, all religions divide and my favorite, on the ass of the pig, let's get rid off this asshole Impeach Bush. When they got near the end of the song and in the middle of the lawn section they let they balloon go. I ran up to take a photo of it with my phone and I just saw a sea of glowing cell phones and I was just struck all of a sudden of how different my world is now in SO many ways from when I was 17 or 18 like most of these kids.

The second set obviously was Dark Side of The Moon. Of course it was wonderful and Dave Kilminster who did a lot of the vocals was incredible and very sexy. On Us and Them the keyboardist, Jon Carin, had a really interesting voice. I love it. The whole the was was wonderful of course. And the visuals were incredibly fun. I can only give my impressions as joyful.

For the encore they started with The Happiest Days of Our Lives followed by Another Brick In The Wall Pt II which of course was a giant sing along. Then Vera and Bring the Boys Back Home which had some GREAT pyrotechnics. And then they closed with Comfortably Numb.

After waiting for the great crush of humanity to leave I walked the lawn a little. But alas. Not ground scores for me. A lot for my son though who found a handful of glow sticks. Walked out avoiding cars and shakedown which is just no fun with a tired 8 year old. And then sat on the hood of the car for nearly an hour in a completely gridlocked parking lot. All in all I have to say it was an insanely wonderful evening.

I'm going to leave you with three videos of my favorite moments in the concert. They are from three early venues.

I have no memory of becoming MacBride’s friend. I am bored senseless at work today. The weather is horrifying. A grey downpour. I have nothing to do. And I can only read so many blogs before my brain just starts to overload but there is nothing else to do. And that is just mind numbingly dull and time slows to glacial speed. So this is my haven. Whether I love it or hate it is the best use of 45 minutes I can possibly think of right now. So let’s go MacBride, entertain me.

Black Soul Choir - Much better. This is a great song!

Smaointe - I love Enya. My son was born to a 32 hour repetition of The Celts and Watermark. I know that seems like an awful lot of listens but it definitely helps the mind focus when you are intimately familiar with every nuance of the music you are listening to.

Another Horsedreamers Blues - Oh I hate the Counting Crows. Arrgghh. I am going to listen though. Hopefully I will have only killed a few brain cells during the listening of this drivel over the next, oh god, 3:09 left. I do feel like I might break out in a rash though.

Come Back To Camden - Goodness. During this grey and dismal day Morrissey just seems like overkill. If I was 19 again though, I would totally find these things in sync.

empty page - Oh I like this song. It makes me smile.

Tumble dice - Oh this is a good antidote for the blahs. Very up and dancy. Plus I do like the Stones.

Do you Realize - This is the Flaming Lips? I had no idea. I like them. I didn’t know.

Well, that was quite entertaining. To bad I can’t continue to kill the next three f’in hours of my day like this. But then, I’m sure that doing meme’s would lose its luster too. And I’d have to search for something else to do. Oh well. Thank you MacBride for sucking up 42:22 of my day. I wish I could give you a Hershey’s Kiss or something. Jaydoh became my friend this morning. My other friend liquorbox did his radio station meme and I read and responded and then jaydoh responded to me and asked to be my friend and I said okay and…well now you are up to speed on the how we became friends thing. Alphabetically he is right before the last diary I did and being crazy like I am I have to do his station next. Can’t. Break. Arbitrary. Pattern. Anyhoo. I’ve already listened to some of jaydoh’s station last night and I enjoyed it so I have high hopes for today. And I have to do boring data analysis today at work so I think mood wise this will be just the ticket.

Historys Bunk - Nope. This is a little too discordant for me right now. Maybe ever even. I’m gonna give it a chance but I doubt this will grow on me. Particularly through the head phones. Never been a big punk person. Yeah I had to ban that.

The State Im In - Eh. Never been a huge fan but it doesn’t bother me. This song actually isn’t too bad. Kind of fun.

Hotel - Oh yeah! I heard one of their songs last night listening to jaydoh’s radio and I really enjoyed it. So glad they came up again! Last night I heard Aerial Bright Dark Round it was really really good.

Anima - This is pretty unoffensive.

The Bullshit - Oh, I need to own this. I can play the opening for my son when he’s being a jack ass. Or my husband.

Well, that was time well spent. Short though 37 minutes. I was hoping for more ambient techno electronica stuff. Which is of course playing, Suddenly, now that I’ve finished doing my thing. Wait, I heard this last night on liquorbox’s Dj jaydoh journal. Good song though. What was I saying? Oh yeah, I did have to ban one song. Which is rare for me but…well…Gang of Four just hurt. I will definitely use this station when I have tedious work to do because I agree with jaydoh in that the techno beat does help to keep me focused.

So apparently the last time I listened to JoeMyGod’s radio station I had a stick up my ass and didn’t feel like dancing or having fun. This was a great list and I know who’s radio station to play next time I need a dance mix selection. Now I need a video huh? This should be a hard choice.
