So ANGELofHELL, spookyhobo and I went to Summer Slaughter...

Blackguard didn't play. :[ Apparently, they didn't play because, the House of Blues only wanted 10 bands to play, because of time constraints. Which is stupid. They would have only played for 20-30 minutes or so. The other bands could have easily taken off a song from their setlist in order for them to play. That really annoyed me, because I really wanted to see them live.

We got to be front row/center for Decrepit Birth. Their sound was perfect. I'm not too familiar with their music, so I have no clue about their setlist. The vocalist as well as the bassist were fucking great. He delivered cd quality vocals, and headbanged a lot. Overall, they were fucking awesome; very high energy, and amazing live.

After the Burial was next, and we just sat out for them. HorriBLAHness. They started with a breakdown and ended with a breakdown.

Beneath the Massacre. They were pretty bad. There were a bunch of scene/core kids that were moshing/hardcore dancing throughout their set. It was not enjoyable.

Next was fucking Origin. Their bassist. Holy shit. The only word that can describe the bassist was EPIC. That was pure talent. They were really cool to watch. The quality of their sound wasn't as good as Decripit Birth's, however.

Dying Fetus also played, and although I'm not a big fan of their music, they were really good live. I guess they're one of those bands whose sound is more fitting while watching them live. They had lots of energy and played for a while.

Born of Osiris. We sat out for them. They were horrible, and seemed to be neverending. eww. I hope I never have to suffer through seeing them live again.

Winds of Plague was nice. I wasn't too familiar with their music, but, the keyboards were dreamy and reminded me of maudlin of the Well's atmosphere that they create with their music.

Darkest Hour played a lot of songs from Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation and Undoing Ruin. I thought they would play more stuff from their newer albums. They told everyone to start a mosh pit in the front. lame.

Septic Flesh was amazing live, and then men in the band were rather good looking. lol. I really need to download some of their music. After that, there were these two drunk girls that made their way up to the front for Satyricon, and they kept moshing, dancing, and flashing the band. They kept trying to get between Ashleigh and I, and I kept pushing them away and kicking them. They didn't understand. I grabbed the girls arm from where she was trying to grab my arm to get in the front, and I pushed her away for the last time. They then bothered Ashleigh for the rest of the show. They kept trying to dance dirtily with her and one of the girls lifted up her shirt, she wasn't wearing a bra, and started rubbing up against people. It was so annoying. I wanted to enjoy satyricon, but I couldn't, because of those two drunken, slutty, metalhead, assholes. After Satyricon finished, I realized that I was bleeding. I'm not sure what happened, but, I guess one of the girls scratched me while trying to get up front, or something... I now understand what everyone means when they say that they hate metalheads, as they can be stupid, drunken, idiots.

Which is your favourite song?
Out of all of these, Rain by Charon, is probably my favorite song. I enjoy the lyrics of the song as well as the melody. It's very solid, and straightforward. It's just an overall good song.

1. Opeth - Watershed
I was looking forward to this album for quite some time, and when I received it in the mail, I was overjoyed. I first heard the live version of Heir Apparent before the album leaked, and I got extremely excited. Every song on this album is as powerful as the one before. This album is very solid, and there aren’t any bad tracks on it. The video for Porcelain Heart was strange, I’ll admit, but it fit in with the mood created with the song.

2. Tiamat - Amanethes
HOLY SHIT! Johan Edlund can siiiiiiiiiing. This album was one of those albums that just kinda grabbed me by the throat and sucked me into its vortex of doom. I love it. I don’t see any way in which it could improve at all. The contrast between the male and the female vocals that this album has is very balanced, and of course, the lyrics are awesome (just like their other albums.) Though this album is nothing like their earlier albums, it’s still amazing.

3. van Canto - Hero
At first, I did not want to listen to this album, because I feared that they would have ruined all of the songs they covered, but it was the exact opposite. I find that their Blind Guardian, Manowar, Nightwish, and Iron Maiden covers are as good (or do I dare say, better) than the originals. They did a fantastic job with this album, and the fact that they can make such amazing music a capella with drums is phenomenal.

4. Аркона - Ot Serdca K Nebu
I received this as a gift from my boyfriend, and I adored it with all of its folky melodies and Russian lyrics. I even had my mother translate some of it for me (as my knowledge of Russian is horrible). It could just be me, but this cd made me want to get up and do some weird folk dance to the music; it seemed fitting. Their albums just seem to be getting better and better from their earlier ones.

5. Avantasia - The Scarecrow
When I got this cd in the mail, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I honestly didn’t think it would be that good, but oh man, I was proved so wrong. Lost in Space was a good choice for a single, and the epic version of it made my jaw drop in awe. I think Tobi just has a thing for making perfect epic versions of already good songs.

6. Agalloch - The White
This EP was extremely hyped up and promoted, but it was still nice to listen to. It proved Agalloch can still be epic without having vocals. Birch Black and Birch White stick out the most on this album, but that’s not to say that the rest of it is mediocre by any means. I heard Sowilo Rune first, and I thought that was my favorite until I listened to ze Birch songs. This makes me happy in the pants, and excited for their next cd.

7. Lifelover - Konkurs
Lifelover seemed to be on a downward spiral for me. Pulver was close to perfection for me, Erotik was good (but not great), so I thought this album would at least be ok. It amazed me, and I like how they actually have more English lyrics this time. This was a strange album, because of all of the influences they incorporated, but still very dark.

8. Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery
Even though there wasn’t any new Katatonia material this year, at least there was Bloodbath. I’m glad Mikael came back to do vocals, because he did a good job, it’s nice to hear him fully grunt and growl on an album without combining singing. The cover is strange, but egh… it’s the material that matters. Mock the Cross is my favorite on this album, and it boasts the lyrics, “His spit on the flaking emblem of solomon a schism of confusion weaken the trinity .”


Honorable Mention:
1. Korpiklaani - Korven Kuningas
Good folk metal.

2. Hollenthon - Opus Magnum
Epic as fuck.

3. Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against all Life
Almost as good as The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide.

The Worst:
1. Edguy - Tinnitus Sanctus
This album only had two good songs: dragonfly and ministry of saints.

2. Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy
The last half of the album is over 9000 times better than the first half. They fail at concept albums.
