My experience at the Coachella Music Festival was really fun this year. I enjoyed myself more this year than I did last year. It wasn’t as horribly hot as 2007 (but still very hot), the people who attended this year were much mellower and kinder than the group of people who attended in 2007, and I saw more artists than I did last year.

Whom I saw…

Friday

DJ Mehdi: His set was a great way to begin the festival, with lots o’ dance grooves. Mehdi smiled and had fun. So did I.

American Bang: This band is my Coachella find for 2008. I walked by the Mojave tent, where they were playing, to get some water and heard them. Their music drew me into the tent, and I ended up staying to listen to the last half of their set. They play Southern-styled rock. They reminded me of Kings of Leon, whom I like. I will be investigating their music further.

Midnight Juggernauts: This was my first proper set of the festival (i.e., watched from beginning to end). They performed a solid set, saving their best songs for last. They rocked the entire Sahara tent when they closed with “Into the Galaxy.” One of my fave sets of the festival.

Redd Kross: On our way to the Gobi tent, we walked through the Mojave tent just to see what was happening on stage. We stayed for two songs and left. Big hair rock is not my thing.

Les Savy Fav: Les Savy Fav have quickly become one of my top 20 artists. I first saw them perform in Los Angeles in December 2007. I didn’t plan on seeing them at Coachella because I wanted to see only artists I’ve never seen before, but the Gobi tent was so full of people for Battles (whom I planned to see) that we gave up on that idea and headed to the outdoor stage instead. It was not a second-best choice because Les Savy Fav are something special live. At Coachella, Les Savy Fav delivered a high-energy set with singer Tim Harrington pulling a lot of stage shenanigans. Wearing only red polyester shorts and sneakers, Harrington climbed the staging towers and hung from the beams like a crazed acrobat. Les Savy Fav are always entertaining and worth seeing. I’m sure that I’ll see their set at Pitchfork in July.

Architecture in Helsinki: I was looking forward to seeing them; unfortunately, their set did not live up to my expectations. I can’t put my finger on it, but they were lacking something on stage. They weren’t bad; they just didn’t wow me. The only memorable part of their set was a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

Jens Lekman: I caught the last several songs of Lekman’s set. I must say that I was not impressed. He’s just a little too precious for my liking. He does, however, sound exactly as he does in his recordings.

The Breeders: Their set was the biggest disappointment of the festival for me. I looked forward to seeing them so much because I’ve been a long-time fan. What they delivered was so blah and bland. I wish I had seen Adam Freeland instead.

Tegan and Sara: I’ve been wanting to see Tegan and Sara perform for years! Their set was really fantastic – everything I hoped it would be. Their songs were tight, their banter was funny – in short, they were charming and musically perfect. One of my fave sets of the festival.

The Raconteurs: I sacrificed both Goldfrapp and Aphex Twin to see the Raconteurs. Although I feel bad about missing Goldfrapp and Aphex Twin (whom I heard put on fabulous sets), I am glad that I saw the Raconteurs. They rocked hard. Unfortunately, during the latter half of their set, I became so tired that I could barely keep my eyes open (my fault, not theirs). One of my fave sets of the festival.

My friend and I were so exhausted that we gave up after the Raconteurs and went back to the tents to collapse. From our tents, we listened to The Verve (who sounded like crap), Pendulum (who sounded fantastic) and Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson’s gentle songs lullabied me to sleep.

Saturday

The Bird and The Bee: The Bird and the Bee’s set was the surprise treat of Coachella 2008 for me. I had listened to their songs in the past, but they didn’t make a huge impression on me. Their set at Coachella, however, was very entertaining. Singer/frontwoman Inara George reminded me of an undamaged Kathleen Hanna with her naughty-but-cute demeanor. She and her backup singers were cute in their matching outfits, rocking the doo-wop vibe. One of my fave sets of the festival.

The Teenagers: I wanted to like them; however, their set was dull. We left after a few songs.

Uffie featuring DJ Mehdi: Uffie was not good.

Carbon/Silicon: Mick Jones! Do I need to say more? Love, love, love, him! They rocked hard.

DeVotchKa: I wanted to see them because (1) I liked the album and (2) because I had read that their live shows were like a circus. Their set was indeed like a circus. They had two acrobats who entertained while they performed. Quality gypsy music. Tubas, upright bass, violin…

Boys Noize: Young German DJ. I enjoyed his set. I wish I had more energy to dance, but the heat took it out of me.

Bonde do Rolê: The sound level for their set was too loud to enjoy. Everything sounded distorted. I’m disappointed that the sound was so bad because I think they might have been good to watch. We left after a few songs. We needed to save our ears.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks: This set was one of my must-sees -- strange so, considering I was never a Pavement fan. In fact, I can’t name a single Pavement song. I wanted to see this set based on the excellence of their new album Emotional Trash. Their set was one gigantic jam session with Malkmus making some snide remarks every so often. He seemed pissed off that he and his band were not playing the main stage. He did, however, make up for his snarkiness by commenting with genuine emotion that he was “the luckiest man in the world to front this great band.”

St. Vincent: This was another surprise set for me. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly I saw. I’m familiar with St. Vincent’s album Marry Me, but I only recognized a few songs from that album performed during the set. I guess Annie was playing new material. I was caught off guard because I expected it to be a mellow set, but instead it was a guitar-driven experimental music set. I like being surprised like that.

Cinematic Orchestra: I was looking forward to their set because I enjoyed their album Ma Fleur so much, but I was completely disappointed with their set. First of all, they made the audience wait for ages and then they sounded nothing like their albums. It was some sort of jazz fusion thing going on stage. Ick.

Kraftwerk: I feel privileged to have seen this band. They are the fathers of electronica. Their set was visually and auditory stimulating. It was WOW from beginning to end. One of my fave sets of the festival.

Portishead: I had high expectations for this set. Portishead unbelievably EXCEEDED my expectations. Their set was so mind-blowing good. Both the old and new material sounded fresh and timeless. One of my fave sets of the festival.

Prince: I had been told by music writing colleagues whom I respect that Prince is the greatest performer you can see, but I was not prepared for how absolutely correct they were on that fact. Prince is like Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and James Brown in one body. His performance was phenomenal! Jaw-dropping good! Morris Day, Jerome, and Sheila E. were the frosting on the cake. My fave set of the festival.

I listened to Rilo Kiley’s set while I was eating dinner at the food court nearest the stage they were performing on. Jenny Lewis sounds better live than on recordings. Why was everyone talking about her boobs? Are they more famous than her or her band? LOL

Sunday

Plasticines: I really enjoyed the Plasticines’ set. I expected to be depressed by their youth and beauty; however, they were fun. Their style was old school punk, reminiscent of X-Ray Spec (without the sax) and The Slits (without the dub). Their English wasn’t very good, however, it made them more charming when they shouted things like “We are radicals!”

Linton Kwesi Johnson: Johnson simply read his poetry sans musical accompaniment. It was beautiful. With each poem, he described its inspiration and provided a historical timeline of political events. Entertaining AND informative.

Grand Ole Party: On a whim, we decided to check them out. We caught the last half of their set. I was surprised to discover that their singer is also their drummer. I think having her behind a drum kit hindered their stage presence. It’s true that the singer sounds a lot like Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The Cool Kids: The Cool Kids were the only rap artists I saw at Coachella 2008. Their set was a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed a song in which they sampled both “Paul Revere” and “Sure Shot” by the Beastie Boys.

Holy Fuck: Holy Fuck’s set was high-energy, booty-shaking fun. The tent was packed. One of my fave sets of the festival.

Duffy: She was so incredibly boring. Blah.

Autolux: Autolux sound like a cross of Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, two bands whom I admire. Autolux delivered a solid set; however, their stage presence was a little lacking. They didn’t talk among themselves or to the audience. I got no sense of personality, which is important to me.

Metric: I’ve been wanting to see Metric forever. I think everyone in the world – gay or straight -- has a crush on Emily Haines, myself included. She shows so much personality on stage. One of my fave sets of the festival.

My Morning Jacket: I only saw this set because I wanted to have a good spot for Roger Waters, who performed after My Morning Jacket. I did not enjoy this set. It was too hippy-jammy to me.

Roger Waters: Waters puts on an impressive stage show. He had a huge backing band, fancy video, pyrotechnics, gigantic props (everyone heard about the pig that got away, right?). He performed the songs with precision. One of my fave sets of the festival.

Chromeo: I left Roger Waters’ set early so I could see Chromeo. The vocal mix wasn’t very good, so I was slightly disappointed. They closed with my fave song of theirs, “100%.”

Justice: I saw them at Coachella in 2007. I saw them at Coachella in 2008. I suppose they will be there in 2009. They were a huge hit with the Coachella audience. I had more fun watching the audience than dancing or listening to the music. It was a good way to end Coachella 2008.

What I have discovered is that almost every artist is worth checking out. When the schedule is published, it's going to be difficult choosing whom to sacrifice seeing.

Annuals: If I'm in a mellow mood, I'll check out their set.
Austin TV: They don't interest me.
Autolux: I'd like to see their set. Jenny saw them not too long ago. She said they didn't have much of a stage presence; however, they sounded great.
Black Mountain: I've never been a Zeppelin fan.
Booka Shade: Yawn...
Brett Dennen: I don't know who this is.
Chromeo: Must-see. I've been playing the heck out of their album lately. Adam Horovitz is a huge fan.
The Cool Kids: I would like to see their set if it doesn't conflict with someone I really want to see.
Danny Tenaglia: Not interested.
deadmau5: Who is this?
Dimitri from Paris: Not interested.
Duffy: Not interested.
The Field: I wouldn't mind checking out his set.
Gogol Bordello: I tried getting into this band because I know Jenny and Paul like them, but they're a little too Borat-ish for me.
Grand Ole Party: I had their CD and lost it. I can't remember what they sound like.
Holy Fuck: Must-see. I'm gonna love seeing these guys. They're one of my highest must-see artists at Coachella 2008.
I'm From Barcelona: I wouldn't mind seeing their set. I saw them last year in Brooklyn. They put on a feel-good show.
Justice: Must-see. Pauly says they've got an all-new set that's hot.
Kid Sister with A-Trak: I wouldn't mind seeing her set.
Linton Kwesi Johnson: Must-see. Reggae poet. He's the most interesting artist on the entire Coachella line-up because he's so above it all.
Love and Rockets: I liked them in the 80s. I don't know what they're doing today.
Manchester Orchestra: I haven't listened to them much yet.
Metric: Must-see. I've been wanting to see Metric for so many years. Love, love, love them.
Modeselektor: Must-see. Here's another booty-shaking set for me.
Murs: I haven't listened to them much.
My Morning Jacket: Not really my thing.
Plasticines: Seeing pretty, young, French girls would depress me.
Roger Waters: Must-see. Too bad I don't smoke weed anymore...
Shout Out Louds: I wouldn't mind checking out their set.
Sia: I can't decide if her sound is interesting or annoying.
Simian Mobile Disco: Must-see. I'm looking forward to dancing and jumping wildly during their set.
Sons & Daughters: I wouldn't mind checking out their set.
Spiritualized: Can see them at Pitchfork Music Fest in July.
Stars: I wouldn't mind checking out their set.

What I have discovered is that almost every artist is worth checking out. When the schedule is published, it's going to be difficult choosing whom to sacrifice seeing.

120 Days: I haven't listened to them much. They're on my to-listen list.
Above & Beyond: See above comment
Akron Family: Akron/Family are a bit too folky for my liking; however, I heard The Dodos are playing with them at Coachella. I'm not sure if that's true, but I like The Dodos.
Animal Collective: I didn't like how much Strawberry Jam was hyped and praised last year. It wasn't all that, if you ask me. Still, I'm curious about seeing them at Coachella because of their total catalogue of work.
The Bird and The Bee: Pleasant, jazzy style. I don't need to see them.
Bonde do Role: These guys are hot! I wouldn't mind catching their set.
Boys Noize: Must-see. See Cindy. See booty. See Cindy shake her booty.
CAFE TACVBA: I tried to listen to them when Jenny expressed liking them. I can't listen to Spanish-language songs no matter how hard I try.
Calvin Harris: I've heard that he's really fantastic live. I'll try to catch his set. I Created Disco hasn't wowed me, but I'm willing to be won over with a live performance.
Carbon/Silicon: Must-see. I was so excited when I heard they were playing Coachella. I love Mick Jones and every band he's ever been in. Their set at Coachella is a chance for me to see a musical icon again. (I saw him previously in Big Audio Dynamite.)
Cinematic Orchestra: Must-see. Wow, these guys have become an overnight must-see for me. Ma Fleur won me over. Really beautiful music.
Cold War Kids: I've been meaning to see this band for the last couple years. I'm not sure if they have any new material.
Curses!: I haven't listened to this artist yet.
Death Cab for Cutie: No way in hell.
DeVotchKa: Must-see. Their album has a theatrical feel to it. Lush instrumentals and poetic lyrics. It's one of my favorite albums of the year so far.
Does It Offend You, Yeah?: Meh! The new album didn't do anything for me.
Dredg: I don't know who this is.
Dwight Yoakam: I don't like country music.
Electric Touch: I don't know who this is.
Enter Shikari: I don't know who this is.
Erol Alkan: I've liked him for a long time. I'd like to catch his set. I'm sure it'll be a boogiefest.
Flogging Molly: Are they actually Irish? Or are they Americans pretending they're Irish? Either way, I find their music to be derivative. I'd rather listen to The Pogues.
Hot Chip: I used to like Hot Chip. Their new album, Made in the Dark, sucks supreme balls.
Islands: On my to-listen list...
James Zabiela: I don't know who this is.
Junkie XL: Another electronic/dance act. I haven't listened to them much.
Kate Nash: At first, I was put off by her songs, but they've grown on me with time and repeat listening. My first reaction to her songs was "An over-the-top version of Lily Allen." I decided that assessment was unfair.
Kavinsky: I haven't listened much to this artist. I know Pauly wants to see 'em.
Kraftwerk: Must-see. Icons of electronica. I'm excited to see them.
Little Brother: I don't know who this is.
M.I.A.: Must-see. I saw some of her set at Virgin Festival in Baltimore last year. I was unwillingly dragged away from her set by my ride. She's probably my number one artist to see at Coachella.
Man Man: Another act that is being hyped. I don't believe the new album lives up to the hype.
Mark Ronson: Does he have new songs or is he still pushing the songs from Version? How does he do them without all the guest vocalists?
MGMT: Another hyped act. I don't find their songs to be very interesting.
Minus the Bear: I haven't listened much to this artist. I need to study them.
Orgasmic: I don't know who this is.
Para One: I don't know who this is.
Portishead: I am a long-time fan. I fear I'll be let down by them, for some reason.
Prince: Must-see. A musical genius and icon.
Rilo Kiley: This is another artist I've been trying to get into, but just can't. I find their lyrics to be unsophisticated.
Sasha & John Digweed: Sooo much electronica this year!
Scars on Broadway: I don't know who this is.
Sebastian: I think Pauly is gonna make me go to this set. LOL
St. Vincent: I wouldn't mind checking out her set.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks: Must-see. I think Malkmus and crew have put out the sleeper hit of 2008.
Surkin: I haven't listened to this artist much yet.
The Teenagers: Their set might be really fun...in a Eurotrash way.
Uffie featuring DJ Mehdi: I guess I'll check them out.
VHS or Beta: I found their music to be kind of blah.
Yelle: French electronica. Do I need any more of it? I think not.
Yo! MAJESTY: Lesbian rappers. Sounds like fun! I'm not being sarcastic. Lesbian rappers are sure to have a great sense of humor.

Adam Freeland: I haven't listened much to him. A few dance tracks. They didn't wow me. I don't think I need to see him.
Aesop Rock: Does he have new material to promote? I liked his album None Shall Pass from last year. I haven't listened to it since last year. He needs to give me a current reason to see him.
American Bang: I haven't checked them out yet. Who are they?
Aphex Twin: I'm obligated to check out his set. D thinks he's the greatest musical artist on the planet.
Architecture in Helsinki: I played the heck out of Places Like This when I first got it. It's happy music. I can envision myself dancing like a hippy at their set.
Battles: I just started listening to Mirrored. I like it. I've always liked instrumental music. I'd really like to see them.
The Bees: I played one song by them and thought "Ick."
Black Kids: Like everyone else on this planet, I downloaded their free EP from their web site. It's pleasant enough, but I'm not sure if they've got that "it" quality to stand out among other bands. Mike D likes them.
Black Lips: Must-see. I really want to see this band. I love garage punk. These guys have a lot of attitude and swaggart.
The Breeders: I was a fan of The Breeders in the 90s. The new album, Mountain Battles, is more Pixies than it is The Breeders, and I think that's a very good thing. I want to see their set.
Busy P: He is the founder of Ed Banger Records. Much respect for all that, but I don't find Busy P's songs very interesting or good. Pauly will have to give me a good reason to catch his set (e.g., Justice will play with him).
Cut Copy: I saw these guys in Australia. They were a lot of fun. Because I've already seen them, I will probably not catch their set. Can see them at Pitchfork Music Fest in July.
Dan Deacon: When his album came out last year, I tried to get into it but it was just too frickin' weird.
Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip: Must-see. I've been listening to the Thou Shalt Always Kill EP almost daily. It's really grown on me. It's poetry set to hip-hop music. I think their set will be highly entertaining. They're now on my must-see list.
Datarock: I sort of disregarded this album when it came out because the single wasn't all that impressive. I listened to the entire album the other day, and I think their songs make a better impression when played as a whole album. I'm sort of curious about checking them out at Coachella.
Diplo: Pauly says Diplo think he's all that, but he's a bore in concert. I believe Pauly. Skippy-the-set.
Fatboy Slim: I've been listening to his greatest hits compilation. The songs feel so old. Has Norman been doing anything new? I fear that he may be washed up.
Goldfrapp: Must-see. I would like to see Goldfrapp even though I think the last two albums were weak. Black Cherry and Felt Mountain are really good albums that I played the heck out of. These days, Alison seems to be going for the Kate Bush thing.
Jack Johnson: I've tried repeatedly to listen and get into him. He's got a fine voice, plays well, but there's nothing remarkable about him. Sorry. I really tried to like him because he is Money Mark's friend.
Jens Lekman: I can't decide if this guy is quirky good or too precious. People whom I respect say his live shows are something special -- that he has a lot of personality and interacts with the audience, which is what I love. I am going to try to see his set.
John Butler Trio: I listened to one song. It's not my thing.
Les Savy Fav: Must-see. Jenny and I saw this band in Los Angeles last December. They have so much stage presence and energy. I really like them. I'll see their set because I want Pauly and Krista to see them.
Luckyiam: Hip-hop artist. I've only heard one of his songs. It was pretty good. He doesn't seem to have a lot of songs to his credit.
Midnight Juggernauts: I really love Dystopia. I want to see these guys. Booty shakin'!!
Mum: I wouldn't mind checking them out if their set doesn't conflict with someone else I really want to see.
The National: These guys remind me of Interpol, whom I'm not a fan of. However, my friend Erin saw them recently and recommended that I check out their set.
Pendulum: Must-see. They are one of my must-see artists. Oh, baby! I'm gonna be shakin' my booty to these guys!
Porter: Are they the Mexican Radiohead?
Professor Murder: I've tried to get into these guys because I know Jenny likes them. I could only find one EP by them. It was so short that I didn't get a good impression of the band.
The Raconteurs: Must-see. So far, I think they have the best album of 2008. Consolers of the Lonely is a really tight album: the production, the instruments, the lyrics, the vocals. I really want to see them at Coachella.
Redd Kross: Is this a metal band from the 90s?
Rogue Wave: I tried listening to them. They didn't appeal to me on any level. Very generic.
Sandra Collins: I don't know who this is.
Santogold: I really like her flavor. I definitely want to catch her set. I believe there's a possibility that M.I.A. will join her on stage.
Serj Tankian: I haven't checked out this artist yet.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: I liked their album a lot. I would like to catch them if their set doesn't conflict with someone else whom I want to see.
Slightly Stoopid: Not my thing.
Spank Rock: I wanted to see Spank Rock at Coachella last year but didn't get the chance. The album they released this past year was horrible. It turned me off of them permanently.
The Swell Season: Must-see. I love Glen Hansard. He's such a charmer. There's no way in hell that I'll be missing this set.
Tegan and Sara: Must-see. I've wanted to see them for SO LONG! They are one of my top must-see artists at Coachella.
Vampire Weekend: All the hype about this band kind of turns me off to seeing them, but I do like the CD, so I'll check them out. Can see them at Pitchfork Music Fest in July.
The Verve: Urban Hymns is an album that stands the test of time.
