não apenas isso; o Zozobra é uma das melhores bandas que surgiram no cenário ultimamente. nem bem é uma banda; Caleb toca baixo e todas as muitas guitarras em camadas. teve Santos Montano na bateria em Harmonic Tremors, o primeiro disco; e neste Bird of Prey, traz Aaron Harris, do Isis -- que também faz a mixagem, com excelente resultado. dois anos, dois álbuns esmagadores, repletos de fuzz e de afinações baixas, peso nas cordas e o melhor: riffs memoráveis. Caleb, que nunca teve espaço para suas próprias músicas no Cave In ou no Old Man Gloom (o pretensioso supergrupo de post-metal de Aaron Turner, frontman do Isis e da gravadora cult Hydra Head), se consolida como um grande riffmaster, calcado obviamente no doom de Iommi e seguindo a linha que se ouve em bandas como Cathedral e Crowbar. ou seja: groove e certas melodias que parecem ter vindo dos anos 60.

os 30 minutos de Bird of Prey são encaixotados num tijolo. a proposta é simples: verso sludgecore com o baixo proeminente, distorção por todos os lados. nos refrões e nas arestas, um riff pontuado fascinante, talvez uma segunda voz (também de Caleb) limpa por trás do berro rouco de ordem. como no sludge e no post-metal, é pesado, mas não demais; geralmente no sentido do hardcore, e não do death metal. faz-se denso também pela equalização quase toda grave e média -- o pantâno do sludge: os poucos picos do medidor para os agudos ficam para algumas linhas de segunda guitarra, solinhos ou mesmo finais de acordes no meio da parede de guitarras. faixas como "Heavy with Shadows" são assim. coloque os fones e vá contando as cordas. acchilles last stand amordaçado em estática de fuzz. é o mesmo com "Emanate", o petardo demolidor de abertura, e "In Jet Streams" - com direito a um puta riff fantástico no pre-chorus. há faixas mais cadenciadas, caso de "Treacherous", em 3/4 e com trabalho de guitarra simples e viciante, e a épica "Sharks that Circle" - provavelmente a melhor do disco. também pelo efeito após "Big Needles", a intro que a precede: uma nuvem de distorção, feedback e buzz sortidos que acabam por culminar numa estrondosa torrente de baixo galopante, riffs muito graves e refrão grudento. as músicas mais lentas são "Hearless Enemy" e "Laser Eyes", outra viagem de noise introdutório seguido por riff épico. depois de meia hora, a sensação é de ter comido um xis. tijolo. compacto, sem firula, muita crocância e maionese. refeição completa.

se no primeiro disco havia maior variação de andamentos e temas, Bird of Prey traz uma grande boa nova: identidade. este Zozobra continua os melhores momentos do primeiro disco -- "Kill and Crush", "The Vast Expanse", "Caldera" --, os melhora, dá coesão e energia. talvez se pudesse dizer que Caleb percebeu o potencial que tinha; parou de pensar "num projeto paralelo aí" e decidiu dar o melhor de si nas composições. ao mesmo tempo, já li review dizendo que o disco não é de todo memorável. ou seja, exatamente o oposto do que eu penso. mas depois de 40 audições, eu continuo tendo certeza que esse é um dos discos que eu vou levar de 2008 comigo.]]>
